Xiaomi Locks Boot Loader on Latest Devices, Cites User Data Safety

by Martin 0

Xiaomi has always been known to allow users to play with their phone’s software such as flashing custom ROMs, flashing mods, or rooting their devices. But it looks like the company is slowly changing its stance on the matter as the company has announced that it has locked the boot loader on the recently launched Redmi Note 3 and plans to add the Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro, and other future devices to the list of locked devices. The company announced that the reason behind the move to lock the bootloader on their devices, which allows installation or flashing of custom software, is to protect customer data as well as protect them from malware installed by unofficial resellers.

Customers and fans who prefer having their device boot loaders unlocked and being able to customize their devices need not worry too much though. As the company also announced that it will offer an unlocking tool as well as an online unlocking application form that users can use to unlock their device boot loaders. Users will need to fill up and submit the unlocking application form for the company’s developers to look over and approve then the customer will receive an unlock code which they can use with the unlocking tool to unlock their device.

According to Xiaomi, it might take up to 21 days for users to get their unlock codes texted to them individually as the company’s developers will need to examine and investigate each and every unlocking application form being they approve it and send the code.
