MediaTek, the semiconductor giant, has confirmed that there exists a software issue with Android 4.4 Kitkat devices powered by the MediaTek chipsets.
The bug was discovered by security researcher Justin Case according to whom an attacker can enable the root access on a user’s device and access vulnerable information and spy on the user by monitoring communications on the user’s device.
This bug also enables the attacker to a brick the user’s smartphone and access secured data protected from user and system apps.
Offering clarification on the issue, MediaTek said that bug arises out of a debug feature solely created for telecommunication inter-operability testing in China. The device makers should have disabled it before shipping out the devices.
According to MediaTek, this bug affects some devices running Android 4.4 Kitkat OS from some manufacturers who have not disabled the debug testing feature before shipping out the devices.
