Hugo Barra, the Vice President of Global Operations at Xiaomi, has today announced on Twitter that he will be back at the upcoming Google IO, the company’s developer conference.
While he did confirm that Xiaomi will “be a part of Google IO”, he only tweeted an image to tease what will be announced. The photo looks like a remote control for a device and it hints towards an Android TV Box coming from Xiaomi.
Xiaomi has not yet made a step forward to officially expand its operations outside China and India, although its products make their way to the western world through online Chinese retailers. A first step was made by participating in the annual MWC held in Barcelona and now we have the presence of Xiaomi at the Google I/O which could mean that the two companies will begin to have closer cooperation.
Xiaomi already has Mi TV Series bringing Android (through its own MIUI implementation) to TVs and has an experience in providing good UX for these kind of devices.
Google IO is launching tomorrow and we can expect to see updates on Android, VR, Android Wear and maybe a new device from Xiaomi backed by Google that would make things interesting for the competition between Chinese companies.
