Even though some folks still regard Xiaomi as an Apple copycat, we think the Chinese company has done enough to prove its mettle as an innovative company. The Mi Mix revolutionized the industry in 2016 and today, Xiaomi launched another amazing Mix series model dubbed MIX Alpha 5G. The device features a spectacular design which is quite different from the generic designs that the industry is getting known for. The Mi Mix Alpha 5G could be described as a concept phone as it packs several features that have not been seen before now. The most prominent is the curved display that wraps around almost the entire device, extending from the front to the back. There is a vertical strip which houses the cameras if not, we’ll be talking of an all-glass body. We had expected the phone to come with a 100% screen ratio but Xiaomi announced a 180.6% screen-to-body ratio. Apart from the vertical strip, the phone also has narrow 2.15mm bezels on the top and the bottom.

The device doesn’t have a mid-frame that holds the regular volume and power buttons and other hardware so the phone’s antennas and connectivity modules for Wi-Fi and 5G are housed inside the vertical strip. The device presents with pressure-sensitive sides which utilises powerful haptics to mimic a physical button. There’s also a display acoustic technology for sound output and an ultrasonic proximity sensor.
Another spectacular aspect of the MIX Alpha is the triple camera setup at the rear. The device holds the record as the world’s first smartphone to feature a 100MP+ resolution camera sensor. This is made possible by using the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX 108MP camera sensor at the back of the device. The 108MP primary sensor on the Mi Mix Alpha is ultra-large with a 1/1.33″ sensor. The second sensor is a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and the third, a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera lens with 117° FOV. This setup also supports 1.5cm macro photography. Other features of the setup include a four-axis OIS, Laser focus, and a flicker sensor. There is no selfie camera but you can flip the rear camera and use the rear display as a viewfinder for selfies.
Sadly, the Mi MIX Alpha isn’t within reach of the average buyer as it comes with a staggering 19,999 Yuan (~$2814) price tag. I may just consider selling one of my kidneys for this one! Who’s buying?
