Next-Generation OmniVision Smartphone Camera Sensors Leaked

It’s undeniable that the cameras on a smartphone have become one of its most vital features. These days, people put a lot of importance on the type and quality of cameras that are equipped on their smartphones.


OmniVision, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of smartphone chips and camera sensors is apparently working on a pair of next-generation sensors according to information that was reported to us by a source today. Based on the leak, we assume that the two sensors are for the rear and front cameras of a smartphone, respectively.

The first sensor, called the OV13880, will be a 1/2.4-inch 13-megapixel Stacked PureCel-S Sensor which is obviously meant for rear cameras while the second sensor, named the OV5880, is a 5-megapixel 1/4-inch Stacked PureCel-S Sensor. Both sensors come with a slew of new features and capabilities that, from first glance, are quite interesting and impressive.

First off is the pairing of larger sensors with lower resolutions. 1/2.4-inch and 1/4-inch sensors are usually reserved for 21-megapixel and 8-megapixel cameras, respectively, but in these new sensors they’re used on 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras. This is why the new sensors are able to use bigger pixels, from 1.12-micron to 1.4-micron, which will lead to better low-light performance without sacrificing quality.

The new sensors are also capable of two different auto-focus modes – phase-detection autofocus and two-dimensional contrast autofocus (240Hz for the OV13880 and 120Hz for the OV5880). We’re not sure if Omnivision has enabled the sensors to use both autofocus modes at the same time but if they did it would mean extremely more accurate and faster autofocus than any sensor before it.

Other features of the new sensors include a Buried Color Filter Array, a technology similar to Samsung’s ISOCELL technology, a proprietary OmniVision Clear Pixel 2.0 technology which is a Red-Clear-Blue-Clear Color Filter Array, and optional EIS for 16:9 photos.

As for their individual capabilities, the 13-megapixel OV13380 sensor is capable of recording video at a max resolution of 4K @ 60fps or 1080p @ 240fps while the smaller 5-megapixel OV5880 sensor is capable of up to 2K/QuadHD recording @ 60fps and 1080p @ 120fps.

The source mentioned that OmniVision plans to officially unveil these new sensors later this year and will begin mass producing them for use on new smartphones sometime next year. So until then many of this information may still change but so far it looks like OmniVision’s next-generation camera sensors are things to look to out for in next year’s smartphones.
