Google has revealed that the latest version of its operating system, which was previously known as Android M, will now be called ”Marshmallow”. Really, Google has made it a thing to name its Android OS versions after foods. Letter by letter in the alphabets. Well, the new “Marshmallow” statue was unveiled today on Google’s campus in Mountain View.

“Some people think they’re dessert-themed, but it’s really technically tasty treats,” Hiroshi Lockheimer, Android’s vice president of engineering, said in behind the scenes video. But Android M was widely believed to be “Macadamia Nut Cookie.” Marshmallow means “A spongy confection made from a soft mixture of sugar, albumen, and gelatin.”

Google has also revealed ‘Official Android 6.0 SDK & Final M Preview’ on android-developer blog. ”A lot of people throw in their ideas — internally as well as externally,”said Lockheimer, a French pastry association even sent Google a treat for naming consideration. Google yesterday announced the release the completed Android 6.0 SDK as well and the final developer preview for Marshmallow for Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 & the Nexus Player. Developers can also install system images themselves or wait for the over the air update that’s hopefully being released in the next few days. New features include direct sharing between Android devices as well.

Whether you like them straight out of the bag, roasted to a golden brown exterior with a molten center, or in fluff form, who doesn’t like marshmallows? We definitely like them! wrote Android product manager Jamal Eason, on the Android Developers Blog.

The new operating system, which was first unveiled at Google I/O on 28 May 2015, is expected to launch to the public in this third quarter of 2015. This means that the final version of “M” is in preview and of course almost ready to be rolled out to consumers. Still, no timetable yet.

Here’s the yummy & sugary history of Android names (minus the first two):

– Alpha
– Beta
– Cupcake
– Donut
– Eclair
– Froyo
– Gingerbread
– Honeycomb
– Ice Cream Sandwich
– Jelly Bean
– KitKat
– Lollipop
– Marshmallow

Google claims that Android Marshmallow is the most powerful Android release yet. Well, other improvements in Android Marshmallow are incremental, but should help to improve
the overall user experience. Well, as we know that the Nexus devices will get the update first but Google has not yet confirmed which devices will be updated first on Android ‘M’.
