Earlier today, Xiaomi officially announced the Redmi Note 3, the next-generation of the company’s affordable phablet line. The announcements comes less than a year and only a few months since the company released the Redmi Note 2 back in August. Some speculate that the Redmi Note 3 was originally supposed to be called the Note 2 Pro but the company decided to just call it the Note 3.

The new packaging reminds us somewhat of Apple’s packaging for its iPhone 6 and 6S.

First off, the Note 3 now features a full metal body that will be available in either gray, gold, or silver. It’s the first time Xiaomi has decided to use a metal body for any of its Redmi series devices.

Other than keeping the same width at 76mm, the Note 3 is now slightly thicker at 8.65mm from 8.3mm and shorter at 152mm from 150mm. The edges of the back side of the Note 3 is also more curved than the Note 2 making it easier and more comfortable to grip.

According to Xiaomi, the Redmi Note 3’s fingerprint sensor only takes 0.3 seconds to scan and identify a user’s fingerprint.
