As the end of Q1 of the year approaches and since almost all the big players of the mobile industry have made their first announcements of devices for 2016, let’s have a look of two much anticipated devices of the year: The Xiaomi Mi5 against the -yet to be start selling- Elephone S3. Since the Xiaomi Mi5 will not be sold outside China for the time being, a comparison with other chinese models is more realistic than other flagships sold globally.
So, how does the upcoming Elephone S3 stand against Xiaomi’s best flagship in terms of specs and build quality? Let’s find out.
Beginning with the specs, bellow is a chart of the basic specs found in the two devices:
|Display Type||IPS LCD Capacitve Touch Screen|
|OS||Android, Lollipop 5.1|
|GPU||Mali T860 GPU|
|Processor and Speed||Octa core 2.0 GHz Cortex A53|
|Expandable Memory||32GB via Micro SD Card|
|Camera||Primary – 13 MP|
|Display Size||5.2 inch (2560×1440 pixels) or (1920×1080 pixels)|
|Display Type||IPS LCD Capacitive TouchScreen|
|OS||Android OS, v5.1.1 (Lollipop)|
|Chipset||Qualcomm Snapdragon 820|
|Processor and Speed||Quad-core 2.2 GHz & quad-core 1.8 GHz|
|Internal Memory||32/64 GB|
|RAM||3GB (32GB), 4GB (64GB)|
|Camera||Primary – 16MP , 5312 x 2988 pixels, (dual-tone LED flash)|
The Xiaomi Mi5 clearly has an advantage, with SD820 vs Helio P10 and the 4GB RAM on the 64GB version of Mi5 instead of the 3GB RAM found in the S3 in all of the storage capacity variations, but the S3 supports external SD for extra space. The other big advantage of the Mi5 is 4-axis OIS found in the camera module of the device, something the Elephone S3 lacks. Both devices have LED flash with the Mi5 adding dual-tone to the recipe. Both have fingerprint sensor, although the design philosophy being different among them, as Elephone has gone with what HTC first introduced, placing the sensor on the back of the device instead of the front home button that Xiaomi went for. One other, small difference, is the IR blaster the Xiaomi Mi5 implemented, a useful feature for many, that Elephone S3 lacks of.
On the quality side, both devices look very well crafted. Elephone chose to enhance its quality by building the body of the device with an all-aluminum body, whereas Xiaomi went with a more Samsung-like approach, with a metal frame being accompanied by GorillaGlass4 on the front and back. Speaking of the front glass, Elephone’s design relies on 2.5 Glass that gives the impression of an almost bezeless display, admittedly a sight for soar eyes. On the other hand, even though Xiaomi Mi5 has really narrow bezels, a black frame surrounding the display gives a “meh” impression.
Lastly, what gives some extra points to a device, is the battery life. And in this case we have 3000mAh in the Mi5 against 2500mAh in the S3. But be fooled not by the capacity. Even though Mi5 has bigger capacity battery, the Elephone S3 has a lower consumption SoC that, in the end, may give the device a greater battery life.
