Yesterday we reported that Xiaomi has again become the top manufacturer in China selling 3 times more smartphones than Apple. Now Xiaomi has added another accolade to its list by signing a deal with the tech giant Microsoft which enables both these companies to cross-license the patents. Xiaomi’s Vice President Hugo Barra revealed the news on micro-blogging website Twitter.
This deal will lead to Xiaomi shipping its handsets with Microsoft Office and Skype pre-installed starting September 2016. The initial list of devices include Xiaomi Mi 5, Xiaomi Max, Xiaomi Mi 4S, Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3.
Commenting on this partnership, Xiaomi stated that, “We are excited to be working closely with Microsoft on a broad technology collaboration partnership. As demonstrated by this agreement with Microsoft, Xiaomi is looking to build sustainable, long-term partnerships with global technology leaders, with the ultimate goal of bringing the best user experience to our Mi fans.”
The company has also entered into a deal to purchase 1500 patents from Microsoft, which should eventually help the company’s plans to expand into overseas markets like US.
