Xiaomi, the Chinese device maker has added another feather to its cap. The brand has sold over 2 million smartphones in India in July-September quarter. These numbers are highest for the brand since its started selling smartphones in India.
In comparison to 2015, the brand has shown a growth of 150% which the brand owes to a larger portfolio expansion in the offline market, and the addition of new online partners to meet the demand of the consumers.
Manu Jain, head of India operations said, citing International Data Corporation (IDC) said, “We crossed 2 million plus sales in one-quarter in the third quarter for the first time, compared with our performance last year, we have attained more than 150% growth year-on-year.” He further said, “Mi India has been warmly welcomed by users, which is why we are one of the fastest growing brands in the smartphone industry today – one out of every four smartphones sold online was Xiaomi.”
According to IDC, 32.3 million smartphones were shipped to India in the third quarter of 2016. India is one of the most important markets for Xiaomi after homeland China. As of now, Xiaomi stands on the No.4 position with 7.5% shares in Indian smartphone market behind Micromax. Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s global chief executive expects Xiaomi to become top dog in Indian smartphone market.
Besides its own online portal Mi.Com, Xiaomi has reached more buyers through other e-commerce portals like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, Paytm and TataCliq. In addition to that, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and Xiaomi Redmi 3S were two smartphones which changed the face of smartphone sales in India. These two smartphones alone contributed to 50% market share in top 10 smartphones in India, as per IDC.
One of the key factors contributing to Xiaomi’s success in India is that 75% of smartphones sold are manufactured in India via Foxconn. Xiaomi has now more than 160 service centers in India to address the consumers’ concerns which has led to people trusting in the brand.
