It’s been only a couple of weeks since the first 2017 Mobile World Congress event concluded in Barcelona and the organizers, the GSM Association, have already announced another event set for September in India. For the unfamiliar, while the Barcelona event is the most popular MWC event, there is actually a second MWC event held in China later in the year.
With the announcement of MWC India, there will now be four MWC events in 2017 including the third event, MWC Americas, which the GSMA announced last year. Dubbed the Indian Mobile Congress, the event is expected to be attended by all of India’s mobile operators as well as several of the biggest tech companies including Facebook, Huawei, Ericsson, and Cisco.
While the Indian Mobile Congress will be associated with GSMA, it will be organized and run by the Cellular Operators Association of India. The COAI has said that the event was created to give the region its own large-scale mobile congress. The group has contacted Indian business associations as well as British and Swedish Trade Ministers to help bring more companies to the event.
“There is Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and an edition in Shanghai. There is nothing in between for South East Asia. India is emerging as one of the global leaders in telecom which we will also showcase in the Indian Mobile Congress,” COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews told PTI.
The event is set to last three days and will run from September 27 to 29 at the Pragati Maiden in New Delhi, India.
