UMIDIGI Z2 goes officially on pre-sale for $249.99, goes against Xiaomi Mi8

The day has come and today the UMIDIGI Z2 pre-sale period is officially up and running on Gearbest with a $50 off discount bringing the final price down to $249.99. The UMIDIGI Z2 (and Z2 Pro that will enter the pre-sale 1 month later) is considered to be a milestone for the company since it’s their best device yet in all aspects. And it sports some cool bits and bites that make it cool too, like the gradience in the Twilight and Twilight Black variants that take notes from Huawei’s design handbook.

In addition to being their best device to date, the Z2 can now compete with other flagships as the previous models were mostly closer to the mid-range category than the high-end. So, if you compare specs against the latest Xiaomi Mi8, you can easily deduce that they are pretty close, with the largest advantage of the Xiaomi being its brand name. Especially if you take the price into consideration.

In terms of design, both devices look beautiful. Both feature a notch display and a glass sandwich body that allows for wireless charging. The advantage of the Z2 over the Mi8 is the more impressive and shiny aluminum frame that compared to the matte one on the Mi8 looks more premium. What’s more, the gradient colors that we referred to above looks stunning, with the Twilight variant being inspired by the Northern Lights. As for the front panel, both are the same more or less but the Mi8 has the upper hand here with its AMOLED panel against the LCD IPS found in the Z2.

In the optics department, both have good specs on paper. The Z2 sports a 16MP/8MP rear Samsung camera with f/2.0 aperture while the Mi8 comes with a dual 12MP camera with f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture respectively. We’ll have to wait and see real-life samples for both of them to determine whether they are improved or not, as both companies have a history of mediocre results in photo shooting. On the other hand, the Z2 has a clear advantage on the selfie shooter since it features a dual camera (16MP/8MP) while the Mi8 stuck to the single sensor that has 20MP resolution.

Finally, the Mi8 is the clear winner in raw power since it carries the Snapdragon 845 and the Z2 the Helio P23. There’s no doubt that the SD845 is a monster, the second fastest SoC out there behind Apple’s own A11 Bionic. But if you combine the hardware with the software, the difference starts to diminish as UMIDIGI chose the pure Android 8.1 Oreo as opposed to Mi8 that comes with the company’s Android fork, MIUI 9.5 based on Oreo.

It is a fact that stock Android is always lighter and more fluid than any custom system. Also, the Russian Lineage OS group declared that they will provide custom ROMs for the Z2 which is a big plus. A big plus is the battery capacity of both but the Z2 one is bigger, at 3850mAh and charges faster than the Mi8: 80 minutes vs 100 minutes. And how much do all these features cost? This is where  UMIDIGI Z2 smashes the competition, as during the pre-sale it costs $300 less than its competitor for the 6GB/64GB version. You can pre-order it on Gearbest.
