While making the announcement for WhatsApp dark Mode, the company detailed research and development behind the feature. The company aims to reduce eye strain in low light environments and reduce “awkward moments.” However, the developers have optimized the dark mode with improved readability and by minimizing eye fatigue using system default colors on iPhone and Android.

Moreover, the dark UI is designed to focus on important information based on information hierarchy.

The feature can be used via a global Dark Mode switch on Android 10 and iOS 13. However, it can also be turned-on by heading to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme > select ‘Dark’ on Android 9.0 Pie.

The new update will start rolling out in the next few days to all users. It may take a few days or some weeks for the upgrade to completely rollout.
