Many mobile phone manufacturers and operators have adopted numerous methods to create their own products using 5G since the issuance of 5G licenses.

The other burning question on everyone’s mind at the moment is where is 5G network now, and will it live up to the hype by offering faster connectivity?

This gave us a perfect opportunity to carry out a product interpretation and evaluate 5G signal of the Huawei Mate 20 X (5G).

Barong 5000 first look

I was taken back in time as soon as I switch the Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) smartphone on, given that it is based on Mate 20 X upgrade. I had a chance to check out the Mate 20 X at the London conference in October last year, and since then I did not get an opportunity to hold such a large mobile phone. Much to my delight, I have finally reunited with it like two friends meeting after a long time.

Sporting a mammoth 7.2 inches display, the Mate 20 X is almost like a mini-computer. A mobile device with that kind of display would have been added to a tablet phone category about five years ago, but thanks to the emphasis on screen ratio, I don’t mind carrying this big-screen mobile phone in my trouser pocket.

The Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) retains the Mate 20 X design, featuring a 7.2-inch display with 2244 x 1080 pixels resolution, rear-mounted capacitive fingerprint recognition, and the four-eye three-camera associated with the Mate 20 Series.

Including the 5G module did not drastically increase the phone’s weight. On the book data, the new machine weighs in at 233 grams, which is not a big difference with the Mate 20 X.

Aside from being housed in a mammoth form factor, the Mate 20 X (5G) has to lot to offer. The aesthetics of the phone itself will convince you that it is Huawei’s Mate 20 X (5G) version.

Aside from that, the Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) has undergone a radical overhaul in terms of configuration. Not only does the phone supports Baron 5000 baseband, uses the SoC Kirin 980, but it also ships with 8GB of RAM and offers a hearty 256GB of internal storage capacity.

Alternatively, we can expand the storage capacity of the phone via the NM card.

On top of that, the phone supports Huawei’s own SuperCharge 40W super fast charge. The addition of a larger 5G module may have forced Huawei to redesign the area of the new module by reducing the battery compartment space.

While the non 5G version is backed by a 5000mAh battery, the Mate 20 X (5G) draws its juices from a slightly smaller 4200mAh battery because of the data.

There are hardly any changes in the camera and system configuration departments for the Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) and Mate 20 X. They house a 40-megapixel wide-angle, 20-megapixel super-wide-angle and 8-megapixel telephoto.

The system runs EMUI 9.1 OS and supports Turbo 3.0.

City 5G cover ratio exceeds expectations

Fortunately, I found a Starbucks with a 5G signal on the way to the test. I bought a cup of coffee inside.

Wait, I might be the first person in Guangzhou to buy coffee with 5G?

The measured peak value is 6 times that of 4G, and the speed can continue to increase.

Much to my surprise, the 5G speed in Guangzhou is quite impressive. This significant improvement in the speed has redefined my understanding of the mobile network speeds.

In the test of 5 random scenes of Speed Test, 5G can get test scores of multiple times of 4G network speed.

The 666 Mbps downlink and the 71.7 Mbps uplink rate tested under the Guangzhou Tower (node: Guangzhou Telecom, Ping value 14 ms) was the best performance.

If you convert this to a wired network, it compares to a broadband speed of 500 to 600M, which is still a whopping six times faster than the speed offered by the existing 4G network.

Before we began the road test, my colleague also grabs a cup of coffee. He noted, “Guangzhou’s 5G is still testing, and the speed will not exceed 500 Mbps.” By the time I complete this review, it looks like the speed will reduce.

It is worth noting that the 666 Mbps downlink does not represent the peak of 5G speed. The theoretical data suggests that the fastest 5G downlink speed is 1GBPS. Moreover, local media have achieved a staggering 1110 Mbps speed on their road tests.

In other words, the 666 Mbps is merely 70% of the 5G peak, and the speed is likely to go up.

As far as the fundamental impact on 5G signals and speed is concerned, it alludes to the coverage between base stations. Just for the sake of an instance, when I am in the Tent Creative Park in Kecun, the coverage of the Pearl River is 5G.

However, as soon as I cross the Pazhou Bridge, the 5G signal drops down to just a single grid. Interestingly, once I get off the bridge to the Pearl River New City, the 5G signal will be fully resumed.

It seems safe to say that there is a considerable coverage area between 5G base stations, and this is highly influenced by the gaps between the base stations.

Even with the 3G signal, the 5G downlink speed reaches 4M/s~6M/s, allowing you to download a 20 MB volume of music in only about 2 seconds.

I felt the software download part of this test was truly impressive. In fact, under the optimization of each vendor’s own software store, the 4G network download software has reached a considerable speed, and it can download a 50 MB program in just a few seconds.

This mediocre speed of 90 points has propelled to 150 points in this 5G era. What you see here may seem unbelievable and I was kind of worried about the downloading speed of 70MB/s I was getting. It took only a second to download a program of 100MB size.

Before I could press the “Pause” button, the app was already installed.

When it comes to the 1080P video that you can find in the mainstream of video websites, I can afford to ignore the waiting time of the signal when I am getting a full 5G signal.

I’d like to clarify that this is not a local video that I downloaded. You can easily achieve 0 waiting when downloading a local video with 5G connectivity.

You and I will care about heat dissipation and power consumption

Will 5G make the phone hot? Will 5G make the battery life worse?

Multiple reports about 5G surfaced online last year, leaving us all anxious about the prospects of 5G mobile phones. You cannot discount the fact that the design, heat and power consumption of the mobile phone will change after the 5G module is added to the phone of the 4G generation.

I felt that the high and low undulation, coupled with the lines behind it and the shape of the deck placed in the middle bears a striking resemblance to a space warship or a sports car. Unlike the back, the front portion sports a traditional appearance, which is quite similar to the Black Shark 2. For example, it uses a non-shaped full-screen design, and there’s a lot of handheld space on both sides for a superior gaming experience.

The Black Shark 2 Pro’s screen should be the same as Black Shark 2, 6.39 inches, 2340×1080 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate (yes, no high refresh rate) Samsung AMOLED screen and parameters are already popular. The battery supports fast charging capacity of 27W. Despite having the same power as the Xiaomi 9, the compatibility of Black Shark phones with fast charging is relatively better than Xiaomi-branded handsets. The charging head of PD 3.0 is more adaptable.

Black sharks also need to consider the hardware and improve the headset

Professional users are still likely to find a huge room for improvement in the Black Shark 2 Pro especially with the absence of NFC function, inconvenience on the go, for example, the elimination of the 3.5mm headphone port. Using a wired headset is quite inconvenient.

Until now, I continue to believe that the Amazon Kindle is simply the best. While we usually do not tend to consciously compare such products, Kindle, in my opinion, is without an iota of doubt the best for e-book readers.

The Kindle series comprises an entry-level Kindle dubbed the Kindle PaperWhite, and the Kindle Oasis, which is also touted as the flagship benchmark in this popular lineup.

Without prior notice, Amazon updated the Kindle Oasis a few months ago. I was finally able to catch a glimpse of this flagship e-book reader device in Beijing. Just a month after that, I am ready to review the upgraded e-book reader on various parameters.

Let’s review the parameters of the new Kindle Oasis:

The first change that grabbed my attention is the reading light. If you were to show your friend or colleague what the new Kindle Oasis can do without wasting a lot of time, all you need to do is to simply turn the 13 warm light reading lights on. When the sun sets, you can re-adjust the color temperature for a better viewing experience.

You can set warm light to turn on automatically when the sun sets, or any other specific time. Based on your location information (derived using network location), Oasis will determine the time the sun rises and sets. Much to my chagrin, when I turned the automatic brightness adjustment on, the position and light did not change. Interestingly, you have the option to optimize the backlight even when it is turned off.

Just like its predecessor, the new model sports a 7-inch E-Ink ink screen with 300 PPI (pixels per inch). Thanks to the high PPI, when I reduced the font size, the screen was still quite easy to read. Aside from reading, the UI interface will have more information density as compared to other readers like the PaperWhite. Hardly anything has changed compared to old models.

The screen hasn’t just undergone a radical overhaul in terms of appearance. The new Kindle Oasis features a newfangled E-Ink ink screen. The page refresh rate is 20 percent faster than previously launched models, thanks to the refresh rate of the ink screen.

The sophisticated yet similar body design

If you need to make a product that doesn’t boast an impressive array of features and top-end specifications highly appealing, just make it elegant and beautiful.

Both, Apple Watch Series 4 and iPad Pro 11 aren’t feature-rich devices, nor do they offer something to shout about in terms of functionality. Nevertheless, it is still hard for many consumers to refrain from buying these products. Kindle Oasis falls into the same category.

While the market is brimming with a slew of more advanced e-book readers, consumers are still likely to go for the Kindle Oasis, thanks to its eye-catching aesthetics. It continues to garner popularity among e-book readers since 2017.

While you can disagree that Kindle has enabled you to read more books, you simply can’t deny that it looks stunning. It will be hardly surprising if people dump PaperWhite and decide to shell out extra money on the Kindle Oasis just because of its awe-inspiring design.

Nevertheless, the new model retains the previous generation’s integrated metal body design. Moreover, unlike the bulkier older model that weighed in at 194g, the new version is theoretically lighter, weighing in at just 188g, which is exactly how much the iPhone 7 Plus weighs.

If you don’t plan to hold it for a longer period, this weight is still manageable. The physical page-turning button is quite unconventional for e-book readers; however, once you get used to it, you might not prefer clicking on the screen as it might affect your overall reading experience.

The most preferred way to read nowadays is with e-books. Whether or not Kindle is an ideal e-book is not important as reading e-books is becoming a part of our fast-paced lives. Aside from enhancing people’s knowledge, e-book reading is also increasing their possessiveness.

I do not fancy reading an e-book using the Kindle. The iPad Pro allows me to access the MS Paint and MS Office anywhere, and I don’t think the Apple Watch Series 4 can replace that for me. Nevertheless, I think they are all good.

While choosing Kindle PaperWhite 4 is a good idea, many consumers buy other readers simply for their appealing design.

The noise-reducing earphones of niche products can be touted as the out-of-the-box hardware designed exclusively for enthusiasts. They can also be deemed as the artifacts of tech giants, which are unique from the rest of the products available in the market today. “Three-piece in the air.”

The head beam of the Bose 700 is made using high-quality silicone material, which is easier to clean than the QC 35’s fleece.

On the downside, simple design makes the device easily foldable, and it requires a storage box which is larger than the QC35. Thankfully, the storage box is flatter, and the mezzanine located in front of the airplane seat most probably will not be very tight.

In terms of interface, the Bose 700 features a USB-C charging port and a 2.5mm interface, but the headphone adapter on the aircraft is not included.

Just like the QC35, the Bose 700 is comfortable to wear. It uses the same gasket material and has an identical space of the earmuffs found on the QC35. There is no pressure even with the biggest head with a five-kilometer radius.

Bose made a FaceTime video chat on the launch site. When a Bose staff member who was at a nearby cafe using the QC35, switched to the Bose 700, there was an immediate improvement in terms of clarity. The ambient sounds and vocals at the cafe also reduced drastically.

The call noise reduction is a new feature available on the Bose 700. In other words, this feature reduces the noise of the other party. Bose has managed to achieve two-way noise reduction since then.

Ai Faner figured out that two of Bose’s eight microphone systems are combined with another pair of microphones for an improved sound pickup effect. In my opinion, the QC35 does not deliver a satisfactory sound quality. If you compare, it is easy to understand that the Bose 700 produces clearer sound, and delivers better vocal and background layering than the QC35.

There are three buttons placed on the fuselage, and they are used to switch on and off, activate the voice assistant, and adjust the noise reduction level. Other tasks can be performed via touch operation. The right earmuff Bose logo features a small area that you can single click, and move up and down, and Slide left and right to complete tasks like adjusting the volume, switching songs, and starting a pause. I think the touch is not sensitive enough, though.

The unopened touch design is currently the trend of industrial design, for headphones that use blind operation; however, I prefer physical toggle switch on the QC35, which can be used to switch the headset off and on. Long pressing the button to perform the same task on the Bose 700 is relatively more inconvenient.

The Bose 700 reaps the benefits of the Bose multi-device connection as it can simultaneously connect two devices, and automatically switch to the last sounded device without requiring any sort of manual operation. The feeling of effortlessly switching between the computer and the mobile phone is worse than that of AirPods powered by the H1 chip.

Backed by a robust battery, the Bose 700 has a battery life of 20 hours. The wearing headphone shows the remaining usage time.

The Bose 700 needs to be paired with Bose Music, and you can set the level presets for the noise reduction here. The Bose Connect app did not match.

The overwhelming overthrow of the design of the QC35, Bose re-stands on the commanding heights of the head-mounted noise-canceling headphones. Aside from increasing the consistent noise reduction performance, the Bose 700 compensates for the sound quality.

Equipped with call noise reduction and the enhancement of voice assistants, Bose refuses to be identified as a pure noise reduction peripheral. It is gearing up to become a close-knit smart companion in the smartphone bonus.

The demand for air noise reduction on AirPods shows the kind of potential this market has to offer. It remains to be seen how long Bose can lead to the noise reduction segment.

As soon as Qualcomm announced the Xiaolong 855 Plus, more than five handset makers decided they’d launch a new smartphone equipped with the latest flagship chip in the second half of this year.

ASUS is the only manufacturer with Snapdragon 855 Plus and has already incorporated the chipset in the latest smartphone called ASUS ROG Phone 2. Details about exactly when will other manufacturers use this chipset is still far and between.

Aside from the aforesaid upgrade, ASUS is slated to roll out the usual updates to the ROG Phone configuration based on this hardware in collaboration with Tencent cooperation, offering a superior gaming experience to its huge fanbase.

As soon as I arrived at the office today, WinBoy editor handed me a briefcase and said a three-digital password. This gave me an impression that I might be checking the military computer of Latitude 7214. I didn’t expect to open the briefcase but just to take a quick glimpse of ROG Phone 2.

However, it took a whopping 3 minutes to get the smartphone and its accessories out of the briefcase.

The texture is the highlight of the design

The ROG Phone 2 seems to bear a striking resemblance to its 2018 predecessor as far as the design is concerned.

The slender body, which is bigger than my palm also looks quite familiar. Given that there is no specific use of the front of the shaped screen, the phone isn’t very unique in terms of aesthetics. The ROG breathing light, the hexagonal camera, the Maya covering the back Pattern, and the striking plating color are likely to grab your attention.

Although a layman might not understand the importance of certain hardware incorporated in the ROG Phone 2, these features and hardware are important as this is a game phone.

Despite retaining nearly the same appearance, the ROG Phone 2 has undergone a slew of radical overhauls. These changes are more evident on the back of the phone.

Even if the special-shaped screen develops in Android for a couple of years, it is worth noting that there are several games that are still not compatible with waterdrop notch and bangs screens seen on some new smartphones.

In my opinion, the most appealing aspect of the screen is the 120Hz refresh rate. To facilitate user control of power consumption, ROG also provides a 60 / 90 / 120Hz three-speed refresh rate option in the settings.

However, as a person who has been “sweet” by a 90-liter 90-Hz screen, a person who does not leave the charging treasure, I, of course often open 120Hz, and then enjoy the silky as a pleasure.

Another evident adjustment can be seen in the design of the Maya pattern and the side edge cutting. The Maya pattern in the back area is no longer placed near the camera but stretches more boldly to the sides of the phone, and the viewing experience is more engaging than the previous generation.

The knife-cut modular filter screen has been replaced with a stripe design, unlike the previous two quadrilaterals. This portion looks more restrained now than the bolder Maya pattern.

Housed in a glass frame, the ROG Phone 2 looks and feels great. On the downside, the thickness and weight of the glass body, along with the internal heat dissipation system have made the ROG Phone 2 “a half-pound” heavier.

As a technical editor, I have used multiple phones including the iPhone XS Max (208 g) and Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium (236 g). The ROG Phone 2’s 240 g weight; however, redefines what I knew about the weight of the mobile phone (data source Ministry of Information Technology).

Taking accessories into consideration, the expansion performance of the ROG Phone 2 is nothing short of impressive. Aside from the 3D Vapor Chamber condensing system + copper plate thermal pad + graphene thermal pad design of the mobile phone body, similar to the ROG Phone last year, the new machine features an external cooling fan.

As a result, the side of the old and new ROG Phones will have a set of interfaces for external accessories, unlike ordinary phones. Moreover, we can connect the fan to the mobile phone and enable heat dissipation. Regrettably, this increases the overall weight of the mobile phone.

When you are playing your favorite game, the USB-C interface acts as a charging port of the mobile phone, preventing you from operating in the horizontal screen, as you’d normally do. Alternatively, you can connect the mobile phone to a dedicated base, expand the picture to the display, and use the mobile phone as a portable game console.

As for the conventional interface, the ROG Phone 2 is also quite comprehensive, with a 3.5mm headphone jack, in addition to the USB-C.

Following the elimination of the earphone hole in some phones, several users were left with no choice but to use wireless headphones. But much to their chagrin, the wireless earphones have failed to completely address the concern associated with the delay.

Thankfully, the ROG Phone 2 gaming smartphone has not dumped the headphone hole, and it is a wise decision, according to me.

The first Snapdragon 855 Plus has excellent performance

ASUS’s decision to employ the Snapdragon 855 Plus for its ROG Phone 2 isn’t surprising at all. Given that the ROG Phone used the upscale version of the Snapdragon 845 last year, ASUS has enjoyed a “special treatment” from Qualcomm.

Keeping in line with that, ASUS launched the Snapdragon 855 Plus, which seems more like the bloody version of 2018’s Dragon 845 to me. The only difference is that the upgraded Snapdragon 855 Plus broke the Qualcomm’s consistent product rhythm and was highly praised, and Qualcomm made it available to more manufacturers outside of Asus.

While I didn’t expect much from the Snapdragon 855 Plus before opening the box, it turned out to be the strongest Android phone as soon as I started checking this 855 Plus+12GB+512GB. It is the strongest Android phone. I even figured out the big difference between the Snapdragon 855 and the Apple A12 after running points, games, and comparisons.

This Qualcomm does not include too many adjustments to the configuration of the Snapdragon 855 Plus, particularly in terms of core frequency and GPU performance optimization:

• The core frequency has been upgraded from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz of the Snapdragon 855;
• The graphics core Adreno 640 is optimized for gaming and entertainment features, with a 15% improvement in performance.

Once it was fully charged, I left no stone unturned in a bid to utilize the full battery life. However, I found it difficult to use up the 6000mAh battery.

I started with the zero points on the 22nd, because I was just full of electricity at that time, after 8 hours of standby, the phone power was 96%. After finishing my work, I played games for 1.5 hours, listened to the songs for about one hour, watched 50 minutes of online video, and used WeChat Weibo continuously without going offline. The camera performance is in line with the mainstream, which is good enough

For nighttime photography, the ROG Phone 2 delivers an average imaging performance. We turned off automatic HDR shooting and found that ROG Phone 2 is still able to do light control work. While the night sky can be kept clean, we still managed to capture some of the details of the cloud in the picture.

Despite a complicated light environment on the opposite side, the ROG Phone 2 provides a stable output and capture perfect photos with color reproduction. However, because there is no automatic HDR assistance, some of the lighting positions are still exposed.

In addition to maintaining stability, it is imperative for the user to pay attention to the selection of the metering point. In this complex lighting scene, there are certain occasions when you need to press the exposure to retain more detail in the light.

While the ROG Phone 2 can keep the sky clean, there are still a lot of obvious smearing feelings when zooming in on the picture, and you are likely to experience a situation of low resolution at night. Note that these problems are only noticeable when you enlarge the image. It is ideally used to send Weibo and friends, but the impact is not impressive by any stretch of the imagination.

Following the removal of the extra fixed structure, the WF-1000XM3 no longer needs additional adjustments to be worn comfortably, as opposed to the several changes required to fix the external structure of the WF-SP700N and WF-SP900 for convenience. Sony also revamped the lumen wear ear design to offer fitting comparable to the IER-M7 and IER-M9. While the stability is not more than what the WF-SP700N and WF-SP900 offer, it is still better than the WF-1000X.

If you fancy using user-ear headphones, I do not want to suggest a wide range of fixed structure when worn, but recommend the WF-1000XM3 for a more comfortable wearing experience.

The WF-1000XM3 is housed in a comparatively bigger battery case than its precursor, and can efficiently achieve a volume similar to the WF-SP900.

The aforesaid battery case has a crisp magnetic structure that keeps the headphones steady despite the absence of physical snaps and minimizes the hassle of hard snap losses. The earphones need to placed on the top of the charging box in a flat position, and the charging prompts that can be seen when you wear the earphone shows the percentage of the battery life left on the earphone along with other details.

The larger charging box represents the bigger battery capacity. According to Sony, the WF-1000XM3 delivers a stand-alone time of 6-8 hours, and when placed inside the charging box it can easily deliver an impressive 24-32 hour battery life.

To meet the varied needs of a generation of endurance performance, the upgrades introduced in the WF-1000XM3 not only includes a large battery, but also a larger charging case. Furthermore, the overall feel offered by earbuds is also noteworthy.

In addition to that, Sony re-arranged the placement of the NFC module for the WF-1000XM3 charging case, placing it in the back of the cover. While most earbuds have the NFC located at the bottom, the rear placement of the NFC in the WF-1000XM3 makes pairing a bit harder.

In my opinion, if the NFC is located on the back of a box just under the flat place, NFC pairing would be a lot easier and comfortable.

While there’s a significant improvement in the noise reduction department, there’s still scope for improvement.

The WF-1000XM3 update brings improvements to two of the most vital aspects including noise reduction and connection stability.

To achieve noise reduction, the WF-1000XM3 relies on the QN1e, which is touted as the latest HD noise reduction processor. The QN1e can be described as the QN1 HD noise reduction processor, which powered the head-mounted noise-canceling headphones WH-1000XM3, which is designed for the small-volume true wireless noise-reduction headphones.

Unlike the head-mounted QN1, the QN1e processor brings the maximum specification of audio support down to 24-bit from 32-bit. Although there are a few more changes in the rest of the parameters, it is worth mentioning here that the specific performance remains almost the same.

This is similar to Sony’s official 4x noise reduction boost when the company introduced the QN1, but this time it can also be implemented on the new QN1e.

In comparison to the original WF-1000X, the WF-1000XM3 offers significantly enhanced noise reduction. It is evident that Sony has not only improved the noise reduction performance but also enhance the noise reduction quality. Furthermore, noise control is also relatively better than the WF-1000X and WI-1000X second-generation 1000X products.

The QN1e’s WF-1000XM3 offers noise reduction capability that’s close to the noise reduction circle available on the WI-1000X. Despite trying it out in heavy traffic, the WF-1000XM3 didn’t fail to provide quiet playing environment for music playback. As if that weren’t enough, the WF-1000XM3 minimizes the effect of noise on people in situations like aircraft, subways, etc, without ceasing to deliver regular noise.

Sony adopts the SENSE ENGINE noise reduction technology for the WF-1000XM3, allowing users to automatically adjust the noise reduction effect. All you need to do is to connect your smartphone and run the Headphone Connect app. The headset uses the phone’s sensor to determine the user’s environmental information and adjusts the active noise reduction effect to provide a suitable noise reduction performance.

The noise reduction performance of the WF-1000XM3 remains unchanged. The QN1e noise-reducing processor provides a noise reduction effect to the earphone. Thanks to its closed and ear-in-ear design, the WF-1000XM3 delivers the noise reduction capability which is comparable to the WI-1000X so that you can wear it even in crowded places like subway stations. You do not need to make any sort of noise reduction in scenarios like airplanes.

Coming to connection stability, the WF-1000XM3 shows noteworthy improvements.

We tried connecting the WF-1000XM3 to a smartphone to play video and music in the conference venue and found that there wasn’t an obvious delay in the headset’s performance. The video, on the other hand, delivered basic sound and picture synchronization without any sort of problem. Aside from that, we tried using the WF-1000XM3 in a more complex wireless room and found that the stability was not lost even with multiple devices turned on.

The aforesaid changes are still pending the connection mode of the WF-1000XM3.

As far as connection configuration is concerned, the WF-1000XM3 adopts the Bluetooth 5.0 technology and employs the true wireless solution, paired with an independent connection between the two ears. To achieve stability, the delay will be minimized to a specific extent, which provides a better stability experience than the original.

Nevertheless, it cannot be overlooked that there’s still room for improvement in terms of stability for the WF-1000XM3.

On a super crowded street, the WF-1000XM3 shows a stuttering phenomenon. In the SBC (sound quality priority) mode, this stuttering phenomenon is still noticeable. By reducing the distance between the earphone and the playback device, you can improve the stability of the earphone, but you are still likely to experience some level of instability.

Given that the Shibuya wireless environment is more complicated than a regular area, it seems safe to say that the WF-1000XM3 delivers a reasonably good output.

The WF-1000XM3 is still capable of delivering superior performance even if you use it in specific environments like office or airplane. But if you fancy running on the street, we suggest you adjust the connection mode to SBC (connection priority) to further improve stability.

There’s a huge improvement in the sense of hearing with fuller bass and more prominent details.

As far as sound configuration is concerned, the Sony WF-1000XM3 features a 6mm moving coil unit, and the QN1e processor has an independent DAC and amplifier, which processes audio information without any sort of problem. The highly competent QN1e processor is designed to handle 24bit lossless music; however, the transmission limitations of the WF-1000XM3 limits this processing parameter.

Sony has employed its DSEE HX digital sound enhancement engine technology for the WF-1000XM3. The DSEE HX can efficiently process as well as compensate non-lossless music while enhancing the quality of damaged sound sources. It also improves the playback and listening effects of the device.

If this isn’t achieved, the availability of the QN1e chip which boasts 24bit lossless music processing capability is not justified.

It will be interesting to see if Sony’s next noise-canceling headphones will address these concerns. We’ll need to wait and watch!

While it is not a true wireless product, it offers reliable connection stability along with stronger transmission capabilities than the WF-1000XM3. Thanks to LDAC and aptX, it delivers 24-bit high-quality music wireless playback with the help of the QN1e processor. Wireless noise-canceling headphones that are crammed with these kinds of features are likely to garner more popularity among users.

Details about Sony’s next-generation product are still scarce. If the company is gearing up to launch a similar product, it is unlikely to make an appearance before the IFA 2019. DESIGN AND BATTERY LIFE

The WF-1000XM3 seems to bear a striking resemblance to the previous generation in terms of appearance. It can be recalled that the previous generation WF-1000X was small, and came with a small attached storage charging box at the time of its launch. Although there were no concerns regarding the bag, it is relatively bigger than some earphone charging boxes without noise reduction available in the market today. This generation retains the same size, in fact, it seems to be a bit larger.

However, on the body of the headphone, the WF-1000XM3 have a much professional, clean, and all-around sleek look than just the shiny predecessors.

The Logo of Sony and microphone inlet are covered with copper accents/rose gold. The lightweight and the three-point fixing structure is absolutely comfortable to the ear.

The product is highly likely to garner more popularity among businessmen and women. The WF-1000XM3 is currently available in only two color options including black and white. it is worth noting that the round corners of the earphones do not hide the tough atmosphere. NOISE REDUCTION AND SOUND QUALITY

CONNECTION AND TOUCH

Citing the lack of support for the APTX and LDAC, the WF-1000XM3 only supports SBC and AAC. Following the footsteps of its predecessor, the App offers two options including “Sound Priority” and “Stable Connection Priority.” While selecting “Stable Connection Priority” will deliver maximum flow, going for “Sound Priority” will ensure enhanced sound quality. The former uses the SBC transmission format, while the latter relies on the AAC format.

The addition of Bluetooth 5.0 technology has helped the Sony WF-1000XM3 to achieve better stability than the previous generation. A lot of people opt for “stable connection priority,” as they don’t mind losing a bit of sound quality in a bid to let the headphones flow as much as possible.

After testing a few brands of TWS headphones on the busy Shibuya, which is home for two busiest railway stations in the world, I realized that AirPods delivers the best connection performance. There was never a break. Although the WF-1000XM3 is unlikely to flow uninterruptedly, the current interruption will not happen repeatedly.

Powerbeats Pro, on the other hand, does not shift around in the ears, and the over-ear hooks are comfortably placed next to glasses.

In terms of design, the main body of the device looks like a pared down version of the previous Powerbeats.

The eye-catching “b” logo looks simple. The in-ear design with ear hooks looks still the same but its body has undergone a radical overhaul. The product is now housed in smaller and lighter body. In fact, the official figures claim they are 13% smaller and 17% smaller. Now, that’s what I call a noteworthy change!

The weight reduction isn’t noticeable when you hold it in hand, but it is quite evident once you place it in the ears.

Both, the hook of the ear, as well as the cavity have been revamped in a bid to enhance the overall wearing experience.

WEARING

Given that your left and right ears aren’t mirror-symmetrical, it is quite hard to differentiate between the good and the bad. Keeping in line with that, even well-received headphone such as AirPods might feel uncomfortable to wear for some people.

I asked some of my colleagues to try to wear this earphone. Few of them have large ears and some of have small ears. In some ears it fitted well and the ears look fleshier. On the other hand, it looks delicate and a little weaker.

While the evaluation has various courses, the overall trend remains popular. Additionally, I also analyzed the earphones after wearing them for quite a long time and here’s what I found out:

You cannot discount the fact that the Powerbeats Pro offers a firm wearing experience, and it doesn’t feel like its licking ears. Regrettably, it doesn’t match the comfortability offered by the AirPods, which do not seem to bother you in the ear when you stop playing music. Powerbeats Pro fails to achieve the same level of convenience.

Along with the shape, the material used to make the car hook has been improved. It is relatively comfortable to wear it for 30-60 minutes; however, continually wearing it is likely to cause discomfort as the wearer begins to feel a earhook-induced pressure on the ear. In other words, this headset is recommended to be worn for about two hours tops.

There is no problem with the unbalance ear pressure because of the air vent design. Before giving it to my colleagues to wear for trying, I intentionally did not tell them the right way to wear it.

Some people tried to open the ear and then put the earphone directly or let the ear hook hang then smash the earphone inside the ear.

There are no prizes for guess that the first reaction from the colleagues was “How can it be so uncomfortable to wear”?

In fact, I was in Hong Kong recently for an experience and one of the Beats staff members showed how to wear it correctly. You can see the correct method of wearing it in the image below. It need to be screwed into the ear rather than been directly plugged in.

This is relatively easier to do, and more importantly, it allows you to put the headset on the right spot. After showing the right way to wear it, my colleague found them more convenient to use. Those planning to get their hands on the earphones need to learn the right way of wearing them.

Glasses users are advised to take their glasses off before wearing it. This way they can find a lot of improvement in comfort.

These can be only used as a reference because even if this pair of earphones can fit 10,000+ shaped ear, you may be the first one, especially for the ear that is touch sensitive. I would suggest if you have the conditions, please go to the Apple Store and try it on.

Activities with Earphone

Be it singing, jumping, raping or playing basketball. If you talk about any of these activities two years ago, you may find the earphones to fall easily.

Although, you still have bunch of AirPods on your treasure to prevent the earphones from hanging. The headphone changes back to the wired headphone.

Imagine asking the same question today. I am sure your answer will be completely different. Indeed, it is not easy to lose AirPods but it will never give you a sense of security.

You need to pay attention to it whether the earphones will fall out when you enter a crowded subway. But for Powerbeats Pro, it will not only give you sense of security but also a confidence.

The confidence will support you to perform bolder and stretched movements during your workouts. The biggest different between AirPods and Powerbeats Pro is the confidence it gives you after wearing.

Having said that, you do not have to worry about it falling off your earphones even when you are running, playing basketball, football or flipping on a trampoline of 360 degrees.

Waterproof Performance

Waterproof performance is another vital feature for a pair of sports headphones. Carrying a waterproof rating of IPX4, the Powerbeats Pro can withstand splashing from various angles. This pair of headphones underwent waterproof experiments that were carried out by the foreign media MacRumors.

Despite being dunked in water for up to 20 minutes, the results showed that the Powerbeats Pro remained completely unaffected.

It is worth mentioning here that we don’t encourage users to rinse the headphone. This shred of information is for regrettable accidents such as outdoor puddles or when it falls into the toilet. To keep your earphones, clean after an intense workout session, all you need to do is to wipe the sweat with a wet towel.

Although, it is worth noting that the headphone box isn’t waterproof. Hence, if the headphones are splashed with water, make sure to wait until it fully dry before placing it back into the box otherwise it might cause short circuit.

While the Powerbeats Pro boasts the same wireless benefits as the AirPods, its physical buttons which are placed on both sides retain the classic audio controls just like wired EarPods. For the sake of an instance, you can skip the current track by double-clicking the “b” button on either earphone or play the previous track by triple-clicking the “b” button.

The sound of plus and minus button on the top of the Powerbeats Pro body and the Logo of “b” helps you to play and pause buttons give you water or sweat on your hands. You can flawlessly and efficiently control the music or podcast at the same time.

The the Powerbeats Pro packs the same H1 chip that powers the AirPod 2. It gives smart in-ear detection, convenient connection with iOS, and better power management. Unlike the previous W1 chip, the newfangled H1 offers “Hey Siri” support.

In my opinion, the use of “Hey Siri” is greater than daily commuting because in sports, you need to put down your smartphone but still need to change the songs, set timers, reply to calls or read unread text messages and “Hey Siri” helps you to do that.

This enables you to stay updated with all sorts of information even when you are lifting the iron.

Taking about H1, I can recall Weibo fans asking this headset to be made compatible with Andorid phones. If you use Android, all you will lose is iCloud’s ultra-convenient connection and “Hey Siri”. Other features will remain same. But aren’t these two functions the selling point of the product?

Let’s take a gander at the connection stability. If it is a commuter earphone, I would not pay much attention to its connection stability given that mobile phones aren’t going to be high frequency for quite a lot of people; however, it is not the same case for sports headphones. The sports headphones are different as during the sports, you mostly put your mobile phone a side of the court or in the locker room.

As a result, the performance of the connection stability will be tested. We have analyzed both the above scenarios. Without a barrier, the earphone connection range can be around 30 meters and if placed in a locker room then the range reduces to just 15 meters (about half).

This leads us to ask an important question, what is the best way to use it? Of course, the best way to use it is by downloading the music on Apple Watch with Apple Music and then connect it to the headphones directly.

By adopting this method, no matter where your phone is placed and how far you go from it, you can be rest assured that the music is never interrupted by any connectivity issues.

Battery Life

According to the official data, Powerbeats Pro is capable of offering a music playback time of up to 9 hours without charging the box. Moreover, it delivers up to 24 hours with the charging box.

Much to our delight, in our battery test we found out that the gap is not that big and the earphone can actually last for about 8 hours which is a great achievement in the real wireless earphone.

This is a significant achievement for a real wireless headset, giving quite an advantage for the earphone.

Compared to the previous version of Beats, Powerbeats Pro sounds very similar to the Beats X. It delivers an overall well-balanced performance in terms of sound quality and has ample resolution, coupled with crystal-clear listening experience.

The Powerbeats Pro did not do low-frequency dive, and the full environment offered an insignificant amount of parcels, while the sound gave an impression of being thin and not full.

The Powerbeats Pro has more outstanding bass performance compared to new AirPods. Powerbeats Pro’s drums are accurate and compact, plus they don’t feel loose in ears. Although, the vocals aren’t exception, but the clarity and the detail reduction performance is quite good. Some can still hear the vocal details as “Squeky Sound” when the singers sing.

The Powerbeats Pro adopts a clarity-based sound style. The public now prefer this style over the style used by previously released model of “moving times.”

The adaption of the music is much stronger than the former Beats. Moreover, the Powerbeats Pro merge its advantage in low-frequency processing on the clear basis and making the performance of the earphones more personal.

If the AirPods sound like boiled water then the Powerbeats Pro is like Lemonade with soda. Soda water taste different from boiled water but the difference isn’t a significant one.

The quality of the Powerbeats previous generation can be bluntly describe as bad. In his last interview with ifanr, Luke Wood mentioned that they left no stone unturned in order to improve the new Powerbeats.

In the terms of actual experience, the performance of Powerbeats Pro has really improved, but is not the best. Although, it can be used.

If there is a slight noisy environment on the street, it is still be normal sound with little some noise but if you go to a very noisy environment like a subway then other party will still sound a little more.

Comparison with Hesheng Powerbeats?

Before writing this review, I asked my colleague if we should compare it with the AirPods. It is worth noting that the two headphones are quite different from each other. While one is for daily commuting, the other is designed for sports.

During the evaluation, we realized that there are quite a few similarities between them.

While we sum up, you will realize that even though this is a Powerbeats Pro review, we have unintentionally taken it and AirPods in design, comfort, stability, waterproof, connection, storage, and sound quality. Even the featured image is made as a comparison.

While the AirPods has a better appearance, offer superior wearing experience and larger storage, the Powerbeats Pro offers a slew of more advantages including waterproof, battery life, and stability.

Earphones have actually been through a long 130 years of development. As part of this development, the functions of the earphones have come a long way and the sound quality is not the only aspect you need to consider before deciding to buy an earphone.

You may not only need an expensive Hi-Fi headset to sit on a sofa and enjoy your favorite music after work but you may also need active noise reduction to counter the external noise in the subway.
