Photos taken with the upcoming Meizu Pro 7 have been released by Meizu’s Senior Vice President, Jeffrey Yang, mainly showing off the potential of the Meizu Pro 7’s monochromic camera capabilities.

This recent post has been Meizu’s effort to share the limelight of the Pro 7’s secondary display and raise the hype of the device’s camera also.

The post consists of four photo sample teasers, three of which are taken in monochrome and the other is in color. According to the source, this suggests that the Meizu Pro 7 will have a dual camera setup with an RGB-color sensor paired with a monochrome sensor to provide high-contrast results.

The images all show scenarios that provide difficult lighting conditions with very promising results.

The disappointing factor is no EXIF info is provided with the images thus there is no further detailing of the cameras, all we do know is the pictures have been taken with a 12-megapixel camera, according to the source.

In relation to photography, we also know that the secondary display will function as a control to take selfies with the main camera.

More details would be expected to be unveiled closer to the official announcement on July 26.

YouTuber ‘Concept Creator’ released a concept video showing what the Nokia Edge may appear to be like if released. A quick summary of the device shows a bezel-less display with truly zero-bezel sides and super narrow top and bottom bezels on the display.

The general geometry and design of the phone appear to be inspired by Sony’s Xperia XZ with clean straight-cut top and bottom without any curved corners. The edges of the phone loosely resemble Nokia’s preceding Lumia models such as the Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020, with neatly rounded sides, whilst ignoring the tapering back its predecessors had.

Another interesting feature is the curved display that the conceptual model shows, although currently unusual for Nokia to adopt this feature, with current market trends and demand proved relatively high for curved screens like Samsung’s S8 or Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2.

Never the less, this conceptual device expresses a very sleek design (notably because of its bezels). What’s also notable is Nokia’s Iconic Logo imprinted at the bottom of the phone’s bezel. The single rear-firing camera also shows the relationship with previous design accents Nokia’s Lumia device had, with the sleek Nokia and Carl Zeiss branding accompanying the shooter.

In terms of color, the conceptual designer has included options of a black, light blue and dark blue options, which fit with Nokia’s current color theme. The video doesn’t clearly show what the material the device is cladded with, a logical guess would be a form of metal.

On the bottom end of the device there’s a USB C port (keeping up with current technology) with a set of grills located on both sides of the port, expectedly one being a microphone and the other speaker.

Interestingly, there is no physical home button on either the front or back of the device.

The Youtuber/Designer has also stated the conceptual device would feature a rear-firing 16-megapixel camera with a f/1.7 aperture, also noting the pixels would have relatively large at (1.5 µm). This concept continues to fit in the context that HMD Global – Nokia’s new collaboration with Carl Zeiss.

In relation to Nokia-related news, the anticipated Nokia 9 is expected to launch later this year, however, there has been no confirmation by the board when the release date will be.

A new leak exposing Huawei’s Mate 10 has spread like wildfire from China. A source had uncovered a number of specifications that will be expected to run on the upcoming device, accompanied by a couple of tasty renders.

We are skeptical about the accuracy of these render, the likelihood of these images being third-party created concepts are more believable than official images. This maybe the case, however, these images do align with current rumors and suggestions that the upcoming Mate 10 will be a bezel-less design, with two pairs… yes, four individual cameras.

The same source provided alleged specs on the upcoming device. For example, a 5.8-inch display with 2K (2560 x 1440) resolution, note this smaller than the predecessor’s 5.9-inch screen.  Earlier speculation also suggested that Huawei may use a ‘Full Active’ display panel from JDI (Japan Display Inc.) with a full 6-inch display, which was expected to arrive on Sony’s next Xperia flagship.

In terms of camera setup, the source states that the Mate 10 will come with a 34-megapixel dual-camera setup, with the front-facing shooters will 16-megapixel sensors. The Mate 10 is expected to run the upcoming Android 8.0 “O” with Huawei’s latest EMUI skin on release day. The device will be powered by Huawei’s next HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor (on a new 10nm process) paired with either 6GB or 8GB RAM.

Taking rumors further, the Mate 10 will feature iris scanning capabilities and unspecified additional features differentiating the Mate 10 to its Mate 9 predecessor.

It’s still early to confirm Mate 10’s specs, design, and release date, but we’re all expecting more leaks to occur closer to the release date, which is expected to be around October this year. If this is accurate, we may see Huawei officially unveil the Mate 10 at IFA Berlin 2017 around September.

Based on sources, Huawei’s CEO Yu Chengdong, has confirmed during his speech at the China Internet Conference in Beijing, the upcoming Emotion UI (EMUI) 6 will be shipped based on Google’s future Android 8.0. This will apply to both Huawei and Honor branded smartphones.

This hasn’t come to our surprise as the current EMUI 5/5.1 are based on Android Nougat (7.0). The source has stated that the EMUI 6 will provide a more ‘enhanced user experience’ in comparison to the preceding EMUI 5, which is certainly welcoming, even though EMUI 5/5.1 has already provided notable smooth experiences for both current Huawei and Honor users.

Yu Chengdong (Richard Yu) has also confirmed that Huawei is already working on Android 8.0 for its future EMUI, however, the source was not clear about what current devices will get the upgrade. We can speculate that the current latest devices should expect an Android 8.0 update, for example, Huawei Mate 9 and the Honor 9.

The CEO has also claimed that the EMUI 6 will run far smoother than Xiaomi’s MIUI 8, however, specifics were not exchanged in the conference. We currently know that the EMUI 5 comes with a large collection of features in comparison to stock Android Nougat, thus we are expecting the EMUI 6 to also pack a similar experience of mass feature choice. We will also expect Huawei to provide additional features into the upcoming EMUI 6 that Android 8.0 will also provide.

If we take Google’s several released developer previews of Android 8.0 as a base of our assumptions, we can predict the possible features that may come to Huawei’s EMUI 6. For example, the improved notification shade and picture-in-picture feature. A more notable improvement we expect to see in EMUI’s adaptation is improved battery consumption on Google’s Android 8.0.

As a result, the major changes we expect to see from EMUI 5 to EMUI 6 are likely to be the changes made from Android 7.0 to Android 8.0. Yu Chengdong hasn’t confirmed this; however, according to the source, Google is expected to release Android 8.0 “O” before the launch of Google Pixel 2 line-up, leading to the possibility of Huawei/Honor devices to come with Android 8.0-based EMUI 6 before the turn of this year.

Our source has shown a newly leaked image claiming to be Huawei’s upcoming Honor Note 9. Our team had already covered the device which surfaced roughly four months back, however, since then the Honor Note 9 has been flying under the radar.

The new leak shows a reassuring bezel-less design resembling the recent Honor 9 sibling. The bezels on the sides of the phone remain super-thin like the Honor Note 8. There is also the assumption that the device will come in 2.5D glass protecting the screen. The top and bottom bezels are notably thicker than the side bezels, however, remains very narrow relative to other flagship devices. It appears that the volume buttons and power button are located on the right of the Honor Note 9.

The Honor Note 9 is expected to be shipped with a significantly larger display, keeping in precedence that the Honor Note 8 stands with a giant 6.6-inch display, the Honor Note 9 will certainly come at 6+ inch display. If previous leaks are followed through (even though we busted the rumor that the earlier leak was, in fact, the Honor V9/Honor 8 Pro), we are expecting a dual-camera setup paired rear-facing facing fingerprint scanner, considering the current trends with flagship smartphones.

The specification of the device is most likely to be powered by the Kirin 960, the same processor on the Honor 9. The Kirin 960 is the most powerful processor that Huawei has available and in stock currently. The device is expected to be paired with either 4GB or 6GB RAM and multiple storage options. In terms of operating system, the device will come with EMUI 5 (Android 7.0) but should be listed for the EMUI 6 upgrade (Android 8.0)

In terms of a release date, the Honor Note 8 was announced in August last year, however, there is a possibility that the Honor Note 9 will be announced by the end of this month and release later.

Amid the recent leaks of Xiaomi’s Redmi 5, we were able to get some unconfirmed data covering the specifications of the Redmi 5 and the possible design of the device.

The design according to the source’s leaked advert, show that the fingerprint scanner will be positioned at the rear of the device with capacitive buttons located at the bottom of the device, the menu, home and back button, respectively, (on the front of the device). This stick to Redmi series’ current button and sensor layout, much similar to the Redmi 4.

Other similar designs include a single firing camera at the back of the device and a front-facing selfie shooter. The device will also come in a metal frame, a unibody design with rounded corners.

The design remains unconfirmed just like the specifications mentioned below.

The specifications appear to be very promising, the Redmi 5 will be powered by mid-level processors such as a Snapdragon 625 or a Snapdragon 630, a jump from the entry-level Snapdragon 435 in the predecessor’s hood.

Furthermore, the source states that the device will be run with a relatively 3,680 mAh, noting that this is a significantly small battery compared to Redmi 4’s 4,100 mAh comparison. A reassuring feature is the Redmi 5 will support Quick Charge 3.0, quickly replenishing low battery levels. Another low-demanding power feature is the Redmi 5-inch display with an HD display (1280 x 720).

The device will be paired with either 3GB or 4GB RAM with LPDDR3 technology, we’re also expecting the devices to come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage, running at “eMMC 5.1” speeds.

The pricing has also been unveiled by the source, starting at ¥859 (~$125) for the 16GB + 3GB and the 32GB + 3GB for ¥1,039 (~$152), both these models will be powered by a Snapdragon 625. The higher-end models will allegedly start at ¥1,299 (~$191) for the 64GB + 4GB variant powered by a Snapdragon 630.

The FCC has published a new ASUS smartphone, listed on record, as the ZenFone 4V. This is a strong indication that ASUS will be shipping the ZenFone 4 into the US as a carrier exclusive, notably network carrier Verizon as ZenFone 4V (under the assumption the ‘V’ in ZenFone 4’V’ represents the carrier’s initial).

From the image, we can see that the ZenFone 4V’s model number is A006, this model has already been recorded by other benchmarking sites as the ZenFone 4V.

Currently the source, we ourselves and other reporters have yet to know much about ASUS’ ZenFone 4 line-up apart from leaks and rumors. As reported in my previous entry, ASUS is expected to unveil their line-up this month and available for purchase in August, despite delays.

Furthermore, the source image also indicates that the ZenFone 4V will be running Android 7.0 with May 1 security patch, however, ASUS may provide an updated Android OS, out of the box when it becomes available in the US.

We are also expecting ASUS to provide a large collection of variants of the ZenFone 4, similar to its preceding ZenFone 3 and ZenFone 2 smartphones. An interesting point to note is the not all variants may be available as variants such as the ZenFone 3 Zoom has only been on sale for a few weeks, thus a fourth ‘Zoom’ installment may come later than its other siblings.

ASUS has sent press invites for an upcoming September 21 event in Rome, Italy, however, there is a stronger indication that the ASUS ZenFone 4V will be released far earlier, in the coming weeks, instead of months. This is mostly due to the FCC certification process, that we can see on the image. FCC tend to test devices that are set to be released very soon for customers.

Mobvoi has finally opened the doors for the TicWatch S & E ‘s Kickstarter campaign, selling out their Super Early Bird perk within 2 minutes after the 6pm (London Time) opening window.

Mobvoi is a Chinese AI company known for creating smartwatches in the Global market, known as the Ticwatch. The company is formed with a core team of ex-Google employees and former Nokia employees; with a collection of AI experts, engineers and researchers who have previously worked for Yahoo Beijing, and large home-grown web service companies such as Baidu and Tencent.

Ticwatch has followed very closely to Apple’s heels in China’s smartwatch market at the second place back in 2015. In June 2016, Mobvoi released the Ticwatch 2 in China as a crowdfunding campaign followed by a Global release on Kickstarter in July 2016. Both releases saw immense demand with the earlier raising ¥12 million (~$1.76 million) within 11 days, and >$2 million in the Kickstarter within 29 days.

Ticwatch S & E models could be more compelling for Global users, due to the adaptation of Google’s Android Wear instead of using Mobvoi’s own proprietary operating system, ‘Ticwear OS’. This approach may help reduce the ‘alienating’ factor of the Ticwatch brand for new or ‘Android Wear’ users.

In terms of specification, the Ticwatch S & E will share similar components to the Ticwatch 2, (e.g. Wearable-orientated MTK MT2601 processor, OLED Display (1.4-inch with a resolution of 400×400) and sensors). Mobvoi have stated that the GPS accuracy has been improved on the new models and change in waterproof rating, from IP65 to IP67.

The marketing difference between the S (Sport) model and the E (Express) model is notably the bezel difference and the inbuilt GPS on the S model’s band, which has also been advertised as a ‘breathable band design’ reducing sweat build up. The E model will be more flexible in customizability, with interchangeable watch band capabilities.

The E model will come in Lemon (yellow), Shadow (matte black) and Ice (white) variants. The S model will have a matte black bezel with a yellow font with a selection of, Glacier (white), Knight (matt black) and Aurora (yellow).

The E model has been priced at $119 (Early bird) and S Model at $139 (Early Bird).

Upon pledging, the estimated delivery time will be October 2017.

A leak has surfaced showing what allegedly appears to be a new transparent Google Pixel 2 case.

Google has been hitting beyond its target goals of the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL since its release in 2016. Google has been very informative with reports stating the lack of Pixel stock due to high demand, notably the 128GB Pixel XL variant. The strong line-up of Pixel phones met with a high global demand and has led Google to the development of the next-generation lineup.

According to the source, the most recent rumor that has surfaced is the second installment of the Google Pixel 2 will replace the Pixel XL variant a new “large-sized” phone; this is speculative, but if such rumors are true, this may not be necessarily interpreted as a larger body phone, but a larger display phone instead.

An extensive report shows that the next Pixel has been code-named “Walleye” with addition variant, larger in size, named “Taimen”. The “Taimen” variant is expected to come with a bezel-less display, similar to the design of Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8+, and Essential Phone; notably the curved corners of the screen.

The leaker “SlashLeaks” posted a photo, what he claims to be a case designed to encase the upcoming Pixel 2. If the photo is verified and confirmed, the Google Pixel 2 will be keeping the fingerprint scanner at the rear of the phone and in the similar position as the original Google Pixel.

What appears to be the most notable change is the shape of the rear-firing shooter, where the camera design has been altered toward the left-side of the phone.

The manufacturer for the upcoming Pixel devices have not be confirmed, but as the current Pixel phone was manufactured by HTC, we may expect HTC to continue with the manufacturing of Google’s next device. However, there have also been rumors that LG will be producing the “Taimen” variant of the device.

Currently, the reports of Google’s Pixel 2 remain speculative, however, when the release date progresses closer to the expected October-November announcement, we are certain that there will be more accurate leaks of the upcoming Google Pixel 2 this year.

The rumors of the Meizu Pro 7’s processor have now drawn close to a finish, with confirmation from MediaTek, that Meizu will be forgoing a Samsung Exynos processor and powering the Meizu Pro 7 with the long-awaited MediaTek’s Helio X30.

MediaTek had revealed their June financial report, specifically about the revenue levels. MediaTek is reported to have made a total of NT$21.894 billion, an increase from last month’s (May) NT$18.37 billion. However, directly comparing MediaTek’s June report from last year, the company made less money in June 2017, with June 2016’s NT$24.87 billion a decrease of 11.79%.

Within the revenue report, MediaTek also confirmed that Meizu will be the first company to integrate MediaTek’s latest processor, the Helio X30, into their upcoming flagship smartphone.

MediaTek is betting that the Helio X30 will help increase the market share since the slipping of market power due to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 popularity. According to the MediaTek, they are also keen on releasing another new processor in the second half of the year.

Although MediaTek has announced Meizu will have a device powered by Helio X30 processor, the smartphone company haven’t officially announced the Pro 7.

The feature will be a secondary screen at the rear will be expected to be a 2-inch display that will provide notifications and act as a camera timer.

In terms of specifications, the Pro 7 will be expected to use a 5.2-inch screen at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (FHD). The high-end variant will be accompanied by 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. For cameras, the smartphone will have dual camera setup with two 12-megapixel cameras (Sony IMX386 and IMX286) and front 16-megapixel shooter.

The expected cost of the Pro 7 will start at ¥2799 (6GB + 128 GB) and the higher variant ¥3299 (8GB + 128 GB). Furthermore, the Pro 7 Plus will be expected to start at ¥3299 (4GB + 64GB), ¥3599 (6GB + 128GB) and the ¥3799 (8GB + 128GB).

Oppomart has appeared listing iPhone 8 cases amidst the growing coverage of rumors of what may be Apple’s next iPhone lineup.

The online retailer has listed three initial items, all which appear to be rugged cases for the new iPhone.

All the cases coincide with the current design features, leaked from Foxconn’s factories, that the ‘iPhone 8’ is supposedly going have; this includes the notable removal of the dedicated home button and finger print sensor at the front the device with an ‘all-display’ screen (with the case covering the bezels of the phone), effectively removing the prominent top and bottom bezels the iPhone has been known to have.

The cases also show the change in the dual-camera orientation on the rear of the device, coincided with other rumored changes with the iPhone.

From the day of publication, OppoMart has listed the cases as currently ‘out-of-stock’.

Apple has kept the pattern of releasing a new iPhone design every other year after the new installment, thus making the potential release of an iPhone 8 to be unusual. Other speculators have suggested that Apple may be changing up its routine on the iPhone series, however so far concrete evidence is lacking at this moment in time.

If the rumors are true of a design change, this may indicate that an iPhone 7 and 7s’ line could be skipped in this circumstance, leaving us wondering about the lifespan of iPhone 7 and 7s’ third-party accessories manufacturers. From the leaked image, the Taiwanese model resembles more closely the OPPO A57 with improved specs. The Chinese A77 looks more like the OPPO R11, most especially the U-style antenna and the distinctive single rear-firing camera sensor.

A rough translation of the text on the leaked image says ‘For Youth Together’, hinting at the phone targeting a young audience.

In terms of specification, the OPPO A77 will be powered by a MediaTek MT6750T eight-core 64-bit processor, clocked up to 1.5 GHz and paired with 4GB RAM. The device will come with a 5.5-inch FHD display and will have 64GB, of built-in storage.

For photography and video, the A77 will come with a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 16-megapixel front-facing selfie shooter. Other components include a 3200mAh battery and a standby dual-SIM setup.

The Honor 8 Pro was announced a few months ago, though as the Honor V9 first in China. While there is already a successor in form of the Honor 9, Huawei is just launching the Honor 8 Pro in India.

In terms of specifications, the Honor 8 Pro is exactly the same as the Mainland’s Honor V9. It is powered by the same Kirin 960 octa-core and paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage with option for expansion. The phone has a large 4000mAh battery with support for fast charging and comes with Huawei’s EMUI 5.1 based on Android 7.0.

The display is a 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440p (2K display). The Honor 8 Pro has a dual rear camera setup: one is a 12-megapixel monochrome sensor and the second is a 12-megapixel RGB sensor. An 8-megapixel sensor serves as the front facing camera.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 has had its front glass panel exposed online, fueling the hype about the device’s release in Fall of 2017. The outstanding feature being the continuation of the S8 design language seen on fan-based renders.

The leaked photo reveals Samsung has increased the screen-to-body ratio to an exceptionally high percentage. The side bezels are narrower and the design is replicated for the forehead and chin.

We can also see that Samsung has reduced the definition of the corners of the screen, making the edges more discretely curved in comparison to the S8 series.

This indicates that Samsung is still working on perfecting the curved corner screen through hardware and also working closely with the software design to accommodate the rounded corners of the screen.

According to the source, the Galaxy Note 8 will be sporting a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display with a 2K resolution (2560 x 1440) and an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 (the same as the S8 line-up). We expect the device to be powered with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 or Samsung’s Exynos 8895 processor, paired with 6GB RAM.

For camera specifications, the Note 8 will come with a dual-camera setup with a minimum count of 12-megapixel at the rear with optical image stabilization. The phone is also rumored to have a 3300mAh battery.

Another source has suggested the dimension of the device will be 162.4 × 74.5 × 8.4 mm (include the camera hump and the thickness would be 9.5mm).

Other features that we expect will come with the Galaxy Note 8 is the support for the DeX docking station and also an enhanced S-Pen functionality.

For storage, the Note 8 will come in 64GB, 128GB and possibly a 256GB model (Taking a pinch of salt). MicroSD expansion will also be expected to be included.

In terms of color variations, we will arrive in black, blue and gold.

Rumors continue to suggest that the Note 8 may in fact be released on August 26 in New York. However this has not been confirmed by verified leakers or Samsung itself.

The price has been speculated to be valued at more than $1100, which will make it the most expensive Samsung phone yet.

Xiaomi recently released new updates for MIUI. In addition to bringing new features to the phones, some devices have also gotten updated to a new Android version. Xiaomi says it plans to update a total of 14 devices to Android Nougat and has released a list containing eligible devices.

The Mi Note Pro, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Redmi 4X and Redmi Note 4X are among the fourteen devices said to have been updated or will be updated to Android Nougat.

The list also mentions the devices that will get an upgrade to Android 7.1 or 7.1.1. Devices on this list are the Mi 6, Mi Max 2, Mi 5C and Redmi 4X.

Xiaomi is known to provide regular updates for MIUI but slow at upgrading them to new Android OS versions. If you are planning to get a Xiaomi phone, this list will help you decide which device to purchase especially if you care for software updates.

Some devices are not on the list such as the original Redmi Note 4 and it is interesting to see that the Mi Note makes it to the list. If your device is not on the list, don’t lose hope yet. You may at least get MIUI 9 and have access to some features from Android 7.0.

All future Xiaomi devices are expected to come with Android 7.0 out of the box until Google releases Android 8.0.

Antutu has officially published a list of May’s best performing smartphones by taking the average benchmark scores of every device over the duration of the month. The list revealed that an Android device, the HTC U11 has overthrown Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus as the fastest smartphone in the world.

The HTC U11 beats the iPhone 7 Plus’ Antutu average benchmark scores of 174,299, with an average score of 180,079. Xiaomi’s Mi 6 is in third place with 172,494 and Samsung’s S8 and S8+ claim the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

Back in April, the iPhone 7’s position was replaced by the Mi 6 and Galaxy S8/S8+. Antutu has reported the iPhone 7’s average performance score has in fact decreased, notably due to the aging of the device and the build-up of software updates. According to the source, the decrease in the iPhone 7’s benchmark has been notable since the iOS 10.3 update.

The HTC U11 comes with a 5.5-inch 2K display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835. It is HTC’s second flagship of the year.

Japanese company, Sharp, has announced its latest addition, the Sharp X1, to its smartphone line-up.

The Sharp X1 adds to the list of Google’s not-so-successful Android One program. Although Google announced a new program called Android Go at Google I/O 2017, it says it isn’t a replacement for the Android One program.

The difference is that Android Go is aimed at the entry level market while Android One is for the mid-range market and the specs of the Sharp X1 confirms that.

The Sharp X1 is not Sharp’s first Android One device either, the Sharp Aquos 507SH is the company’s first and also the first Android One device in Japan,  .

In terms of specifications, the Sharp X1 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage with expansion via MicroSD.

The device will feature a 5.3-inch IGZO display, with FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution. The rear-facing camera is a 16.4 mega-pixel sensor with LED flash, whilst the front-facing selfie shooter is an 8 mega-pixel sensor with a wide-angle lens.

The main features that may entice consumers to purchase the Sharp X1 are the large 3,900 mAh battery and its IP68 rating. Sharp claims that the device will last up to four days of usage (we assume very light-usage).

The Sharp X1 will come with a front facing fingerprint scanner located at the bottom of the device. There is also a USB-C port for connectivity.

Another feature the Sharp X1 has is support for FeliCa, contactless payment solution from Sony.

The device will come in white, dark purple, and mint green with Android 7.0 (Nougat) as default operating system.

The YotaPhone 3 has been spotted on GFXBench’s database, revealing the device’s model number as Yota Y3. The benchmark has confirmed previous rumors of the YotaPhone 3’s specifications; this includes: a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and running Android 7.1.1 (Nougat). Unlike my previous article, it appears that YotaPhone 3 will be sticking to a 5-inch display, like its predecessor, instead of the rumored 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch displays. We will be staying tuned to provide more details to confirm whether Yota will be providing any other display alternatives, however, variants are expected to be unlikely.

Confirmed from the benchmark, the device will be sporting 4GB RAM and have a minimum 64GB internal storage, note: 51GB will be available to the user. We also know that Yota has confirmed they will be providing a second, larger storage, device at 128GB. The Qualcomm processor is expected to a Snapdragon 625, this has been concluded from the system-on-chip makeup, containing eight ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores clocked up to 2.0GHz paired with an Adreno 506 graphics processor. We also know that the YotaPhone 3 will feature a rear-facing 12-megapixel camera supporting 4K (3840 x 2160) video recording, High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos, face detection, and autofocus. For selfies, the device will come with a 12-megapixel front-facing camera.

In terms of sensors and connectivity, the YotaPhone 3 will have a gyroscope, a compass, accelerometer, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity, but lacks NFC. What key component we are missing from the GFXBench is the specification of the secondary e-ink display that will come with the YotaPhone 3, however, we expect Yota will be sticking to a 5.2-inch E-ink display with 1280 x 720 resolution, like its predecessor. Other features we’d be expecting is a front-facing fingerprint sensor and powered by a 3,200mAh battery. Note: This is speculated.

In terms of release and availability, the YotaPhone 3 is rumored to officially be launched and available for preorder this summer. The source states a Russian manufacturer confirmed the prices smartphones’ launch prices, ranging from $350 for the 64GB model to $450 for the 128GB model.

A Samsung Galaxy Stellar 2 has been spotted in the online wilderness sporting a 4.5-inch display.

In light of the current market’s trend of larger and larger displays, where 5.1 to 5.2-inch smartphones are deemed small devices today, according to the source, 4.5-inch devices are still highly demanded regardless of the mainstream trend.

For those small smartphone users, it appears Samsung has provided a solution to meet their requirements, at least according to these concept render images.

Galaxy Stellar 2 Specs

From the source, a model named ‘SCH-i300’ also known as the Galaxy Stellar 2, will sport a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display at a resolution of 720p. The chassis will take a more rounded design, noticeable around the edges of the device.

The screen will be covered by 2.5D glass and plastic casing, supported by a metal frame for structural integrity. In terms of features, we can only judge from the photos that we’ll be expecting a fingerprint sensor located where the home button is.

For internal specs, the smartphone will be powered by an entry/mid-level Snapdragon 626 processor (8-core clocked up to 2.2 GHz) paired with an odd 2.5GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.

Photography and videos are taken with a 5-megapixel rear facing shooter and a 1.2-megapixel selfie shooter. The phone will have a large 3500mAh battery, supporting ‘Quick Charge 2.0’ via microUSB.

The Galaxy Stellar 2 will run Android 7.0 (Nougat) which is always welcome.

According to the source, the Galaxy Stellar 2 will be priced at $99 (¥699).

Xiaomi has revealed another press conference but this time for a “MIJIA” product. According to the source, we are expecting Xiaomi to release a larger product than usual, and this could be a release of a Xiaomi 120-inch projector, according to the source.

From the photo provided, we can clearly see a projected image at a very wide span and what appears to be high-resolution imagery reproduced on the wall.

According to the sources, analyst Sun Changxu has hinted that this release could be a wide-screen projector.

If these rumors are true, Xiaomi’s projector can provide a competitive alternative to other rival companies. We can be looking at a less-pricey high-resolution counterpart in relation to Sony’s lineup of products. From the source, if Xiaomi does release a projector, it will be priced at an affordable price, like Xiaomi’s TV range, whilst providing very high-spec components and features.

We will have to take this with a grain of salt though as Xiaomi has not officially confirmed or teased any ideas of what their new product may be.

IC Insights, a semiconductor market research company based in the US, published a report of 2016’s top smartphones shipments. According to the source, China’s smartphone companies have been a dominating force in the market, holding a total of 11 places out of the 14.

Among the Chinese manufacturers include, Huawei ranked 3rd, OPPO 4th, Vivo 5th, with ZTE holding 6th. In addition to this Lenovo, Xiaomi, TCL, Gionee, Meizu and LeEco/Coolpad came accordingly in order.

Last year’s report for Xiaomi’s shipments saw a decrease to 52.9 million units, down since 2015 by 25%. However, this year speculation believes that Xiaomi has recoiled back significantly.

According to the industry analyst, Kevin Wang, in Q2 2017, Xiaomi sales have reached 23 million, predicting 3Q17 will have another 28 million, and closing 2017 the expected figure will be expected to exceed 80 million shipped units.

What is also interesting to see is the rapid increase in popularity for companies OPPO and Vivo, seeing massive increases of 88% and 89%, respectively. The next largest increase has been Gionee by 53%.

OPPO and Vivo, both owned by BBK Electronics, have seen this large influx of shipments has been primarily due to home market interest in the photography/selfie smartphones. Phones such as Oppo’s R-series and Vivo’s V/Y-series are expected to be the key drivers to the rapid shipment increase between 2015 and 2016. This hasn’t been limited to the home market however, international shipments to countries such as India, Indonesia and in Oppo’s circumstance, with Australia and selected parts of Europe have also played important roles in boosting the company’s shipments.

Other Chinese manufacturers such as ZTE and Meizu have seen small but healthy increases to their shipments, however, it is uncertain what 2017 will bring, depending on what compelling devices they plan to release before the turn to 2018.

Whilst some Chinese manufacturers have seen positive outcomes after 2016’s report, companies such as Lenovo and especially LeEco’s side have felt the pinch in the fall in consumer demand for their phones. The backslash to LeEco’s business plan into the US has now left them tumbling on the leaderboard and unless the company’s negative shipments growth change or they improve their market approach, it is uncertain whether they’ll be appearing in next year’s report.

Lenovo felt similar effects especially in international shipments, where the company had dissolved the ZUK spinoff.

It’s been two days since the release of the OnePlus 5 and many fans and reviewers have already been able to test out OnePlus 5’s flashy new camera features. There is, however, been a feature that OnePlus has not been transparent about; this being the ‘optical zoom’ feature.

The OnePlus 5’s dual camera setup houses a 16-megapixel IMX398 regular sensor with f/1.7 lens and a 20-megapixel IMX350 sensor with f/2.6 telephoto lens. The latter provides the further zoom that the 16-megapixel sensor cannot handle. This method operates the same as many other devices, such as Oppo’s R11 and Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus.

Optical zoom theoretically provides consistent quality; however, the claim OnePlus had published on their website and announcement about OnePlus 5’s 2.0x “lossless” zoom isn’t purely optical.

According to the co-founder Carl Pei, the telephoto lens zooms to a maximum at 1.6x zoom, then the OnePlus 5 switches to software-powered ‘SmartCapture Multiframe Technology’, known as ‘digital zoom’, providing the remaining 0.4x zoom.

Optical zoom is at 1.6x, the remaining 0.4x is realized through SmartCapture multiframe technology.

Carl Pei, Co-Founder of OnePlus, officially tweeted that they have advertised the OnePlus 5 provides 2x lossless zoom, and not optical. This is an attempt to clear uncertainty for consumers and fans who have hit confusion about OnePlus’ marketing.

Uncertainty and initial disappointment haven’t been limited to the camera either, as more users have discovered the OnePlus 5 has its predecessor’s display leading to more concern on what other unclear components we do not know currently.

This week’s release of the OnePlus 5 and Oppo’s R11 June 10 release, we can finally compare the OnePlus 5 and its sister Oppo R11 between each other.

Both the phones look very similar to each other and to the iPhone 7 Plus, but there are some key differences that set them apart from each other.

Design

From the image, we can see OnePlus has opted for antenna lines that curve toward the edges of the phones, same principle as the R11. But they are not exactly the same as the R11 has a three line design while OnePlus 5 uses a single band antenna design. Further OP5 differs from the R11 in terms of the notification slider, USB-C and the microphone between the cameras and flash on the OnePlus 5.

Hardware Specifications

In this department, we begin to see where the resemblance beings to depart. The CPUs powering each device differ, the OnePlus 5 housing Snapdragon’s high-end 835 processor compared to the Upper-Mid Tier Snapdragon 660. The RAM is greater in the OnePlus at 6/8GB whilst the R11 houses 4/6GB. OnePlus has also ensured consumers that internal storage will be 64/128GB UFS 2.1 whilst the R11 will come with 64GB with eMMC speeds.

Camera

Both smartphones run with dual-rear firing shooters, to the general consumer both smartphones almost share near-identical camera setups. The OnePlus 5 (16-megapixel IMX398 regular sensor with f/1.7 lens and a 20-megapixel IMX350 sensor with f/2.6 telephoto lens), R11 (16-megapixel IMX398 regular sensor with f/1.7 lens and a 20-megapixel IMX376 sensor with f/2.6 telephoto lens).

The clearest difference is the telephoto lens, it appears that the R11 will be using a more recent variant, however, following OnePlus and DxO’s collaboration, we should be expecting the OnePlus 5’s camera performance to be better.

As for the front-facing selfie shooter, there is more difference, the OnePlus 5 16-megapixel IMX371 with f/2.0 lens and the Oppo R11 20-megapixel with f/2.0 lens.

Features

The OnePlus includes NFC and USB-C (with audio output) not found on the R11. Whilst the R11 offers MicroSD expansion (up to 256GB). In terms of connectivity, both OnePlus 5 models will come with Global band support, whilst the R11 will support a limited amount.

According to sources, the phone that you see below is a prototype model taken by an insider.

From the image, we can see the recurring unconventional dual-camera placement with an e-ink display below on the left of the camera. With these leaked photos, the rumors have been made more concrete.

From the source, it appears that Meizu will be opting for a glass-like build instead of a metal-unibody due to a complex manufacturing process. Although the insider has been able to provide photos of the prototype, the source has stated that construction of the Meizu Pro 7 has remained highly confidential.

Furthermore, according to the source, the space where the secondary display sits supposedly has a dummy cover fixed at the rear. Thus, there isn’t a fully functioning prototype at this moment in time.

From the uncensored sticker on the rear, labeled ‘Prototype 8’; suggests that Meizu has several other prototype variants of the Meizu Pro 7 in the works. This can mean these photos may not provide a final model of the smartphone.

In terms of hardware, it would be unlikely for Meizu to switch to a Qualcomm processor anytime soon, but judging from Meizu’s more radical design approach, we cannot assume what isn’t on Meizu design board at this moment in time.

We can expect is Meizu to provide the latest specs that are currently available like the Pro 7’s predecessors and a follow-up Pro 7 Plus later. From the sources, we could be expecting the Meizu Pro 7 to be released as soon as July this year.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 “Silver Edition” that we had seen in hands-on images after the announcement 2 months ago, won’t be on sale anytime soon, according to Xiaomi Marketing Director, Zang Zhiyuan.

This recent confirmation by the Marketing Director was raised after an auction listing of the Mi 6 silver variant emerged online, with a starting price at ¥3999 (~$585). Since the last source report, the price had shot up to ¥16,999 ($2490.22).

Many home-based Mi fans and consumers have complained that this pre-release version of the Mi 6 was a marketing ploy to hype up the Mi 6 and that Xiaomi has cut costs by reducing the number of variants.

Zang Zhiyuan responded to the social media that the silver variant has proven to be very difficult to manufacture due to the ‘complex process’. We understand Zang has stated the amount of high-quality yield as insufficient for mass-production and trials are still underway to perfect the silver variant.

Furthermore, he defends that the Mi 6 variant is not suitable for consumers currently as the silver edition remains an engineering device and stated that Xiaomi had the right to pursue legal action against both the seller as well as the buyer since it’s the company’s asset.

The YotaPhone is a loved smartphone for consumers who prefer a dual screen set up, where the phone provides an always-on screen using E-Ink technology.

A long-awaited announcement had arrived in Harbin’s China-Russia Expo over the weekend. Baoli Yota, a joint venture created between investor, Baoli and manufacturer, Coolpad had teased their fans and audience of the upcoming YotaPhone 3, close to four years since the YotaPhone 3’s predecessor’s launch.

A certain date has not been set, however, the presenters did provide a period, set at early fall later this. According to the source, YotaPhone 3 has been confirmed to come in storage options, 64GB and 128GB for prices at $350 and $450, respectively.

In terms of other specifications, the YotaPhone 3 will feature a larger primary 5.5-inch AMOLED display at 1080p, with its secondary rear-facing display sizing at 5.2-inches, 720p and keeping the E-Ink technology.

There have been reports of a fingerprint sensor positioned at the front of the smartphone, a security feature expected to found on all major of flagships to date.

The YotaPhone 3 will be powered by an underwhelming mid-tier Snapdragon 625 CPU, which we have found quite surprising since its predecessor were traditionally powered by the highest end of CPUs that were available at the time. The CPU is paired with a respectable 4GB RAM.

Other features include a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual flash, a 13-megapixel selfie shooter, and 3,200 mAh battery. The YotaPhone 3 will have a USB-C port, which will also serve as an audio output for headphones, yes, they removed the 3.5mm headphone jack. The YotaPhone 3 will be run with Android Nougat.

Although the YotaPhone 3 has provided more up-to-date features such as a fingerprint sensor and USB-C, we feel that the overall phone has been an underwhelming teaser. The specs of the device appear reasonable currently, however, the device will appear obsolete sooner than later by the end of this year.

AnTuTu is a Chinese benchmarking tool used to record the performance of devices. AnTuTu also provides monthly reports on general data gathered from devices.

We will be providing a detailed coverage of what each category holds the most popular percentage last month and later lead towards what we will be expecting after this month.

Screen resolution

In this category, it appears that the 1080 x 1920 resolution remains the most popular segment of the market, dominating at 72.41%, followed by 1440p and 720p displays.

We are not surprised by these results, especially the proportion of the 1080p displays. Many Chinese flagships have kept the favoured 1080p display, such as Xiaomi’s Mi 6 and Huawei’s P10; not to forget the upper-mid smartphones such as the Honor 8 and larger counterparts (“Smartphone Model” Plus). We will be expecting the 1080p camp to remain dominant for the next coming months, primarily due to the affordability and lower impact to battery life.

Screen Size

The screen size has a more fragmented market, the highest proportion held by the 5.5-inch screen at 27.51% with the 5.1-inch and 5.7-inch displays coming second and third, respectively.

From the graph beyond the top 3, fragmentation becomes more evident, with 6, 5 and 5.2-inches holding respectable segments also and the remaining 21.93% classified as ‘Others’.

We have mixed views about this, what is clear is that consumers are mostly split between the 5.5-inch and 5.1-inch, however, considering the push for bezel-less screens have become more popular, such as Mi Mix, Nubia, we may also see the increase in screen sizes as consumer may be content with the overall body size of  phones but also welcome to increased screen-to-body ratio.

Processors (Brands)

This category shows a greater disproportion in the market, Qualcomm holds monopoly power on the smartphone processor market at 63.84%, whilst the rest is divided by Huawei (15.92%), MediaTek (15.60%), Samsung (2.27%) and other smaller manufacturers.

This hasn’t come to our surprise; the majority of high-end and mid-ranged flagship smartphones are most likely to be powered by a Snapdragon processor. Currently the suspected popular Snapdragon is the 600-series found on many mid to upper-mid ranged devices such as the Oppo R series. Huawei has been doing quite well in relation, due to sales on their Mate-series, P-series and Honor line. MediaTek also provides a healthy number of processor to entry-level to mid-tier smartphones which, judging from the stats, is quite popular as well. We assume that MediaTek has a lower market share currently due to the delayed launch of the anticipated Helio X30.

The results showing the distribution of smartphone processors, by brand, seems quite alarming for people who prefer to have more choice. According to recent articles manufacturers such as Samsung are eager to expand their own branded CPU lines to compete against Qualcomm.

Processor Cores

Expanding from the processor, the distribution of processor cores is less complex. 8-core processors hold a comfortable 60.11% of the market, 33.12% for 4-core processors, 4.33% for 10 cores and the remaining lot at 4.33%

Current and many other 2017 flagships are expecting to run with the Snapdragon 835, Kirin 960 or Helio X30 (the latter not being an 8-core processor) by end of the year.

We believe the 4-core segment is holding its relative large margin is because of the Snapdragon 820 series, found in smartphones like the Mi 5(s), OnePlus 3(T), and Axon 7. The lack of 8-cores in this series was due to the backlash from the Snapdragon 810’s issues. By the end of this year, we are expected to see a fall in the 4-core segment due to the upcoming release of more 8-core and above, smartphones.

RAM

The number of RAM has increased greatly since the past three years. 4GB RAM currently holds the majority at 35.50% however close to heels is 6GB with 32.54%, with 3GB, 2GB and Others trailing behind.

We will certainly see a change in this category of the market, where we would expect a new significant segment, the 8GB, to rise due to the production of high-end devices’ integration. Anything below 4GB will begin to diminish in market share, whilst the 6GB may hold a majority for the remaining half of the year.

Internal Storage

Alongside the increase of RAM, internal storage has also increased size. The current most popular option is 64GB taking 51.04% of the market with the 32GB following at 24.23%.

The statistics have provided an optimistic future for smartphones’ internal storage. The trend of raising internal storage is certainly welcomed. With more high-end phones aiming to provide bleeding edge specifications, we will be expecting the 128GB to supersede the market share of the 32GB very soon.

Android OS

We all know the Android ecosystem is not the best at providing a cohesive collection of the latest software.

From the graph, we can see Android 6.0.1 remains the most popular at 31.62%, 7.0 at 26.92%, 7.1.1 at 16.09%; the remaining either version 6.0 or below.

We understand the Android Ecosystem is fragmented and judging from Android’s record we will expect this to continue, with Android 7.0 variants to slowly replace Android 6.0 variants. A concern with such fragmentation is the potential of being at risk to exploits in the future.

Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, has shared a number of sample photos on Saturday, exposing the potential quality the OnePlus 5 can provide.

The photo shown is set on a river or lake outside a Chinese city taken during sunset.

According to the source, there is an indication that the camera setup was taken featuring a relatively high dynamic range, in comparison to OnePlus’ predecessors. This feature is used to correct exposure levels of multiple objects in a single photo.

Smartphone cameras have been known to provide underwhelming low-light reproductions such as sunsets. This happens when a camera senses a great difference between the brightest and darkest levels of the image. The image obtained has had its metadata washed, providing no details about the specifications and settings were used before the picture was taken.

On the other hand, the picture obtained by the source was uncropped or no resized, presenting an original 4608 by 3,456 pixel image. This indicates that the OnePlus 5 will be firing pictures from at least one 16-megapixel shooter.

These suggestions coincide with an OEM’s claims previously reported before OnePlus’ official tweet exposing back of the device and the camera setup. What we cannot confirm currently is the exact specifications on the dual camera setup. Furthermore, unlike other dual camera setups, OnePlus could be opting for a monochrome and RGB sensor. This setup should provide better contrast and more effective high dynamic range photos.

The Moto Z2 Play has been released into overseas market since June 1, as we already know Lenovo has provided us a favor and have kept the modular design.

A bonus with this is that they have kept the overall design the same from the Moto Z Play, with the exception of a thinner chassis at 5.99mm instead of 7mm. This has made the Moto Z2 Play suitable for backward compatibility with earlier modular accessories.

Chinese sources have leaked that Lenovo is looking to introduce a new UI system into the Moto line up for the Mainland market (Chinese Market). These rumors have emerged from insider’s photos.

The international version of the Moto Z2 Play will expect to remain shipped with the current Stock-Like Android UI, similar to its predecessors.

On the other hand, things may appear different in the home market. Lenovo may be releasing a Moto Z2 Play running a new ZUI version, reviving the recently shelved ZUK brand or at least its UI.

This approach may seem odd for international users for Lenovo to explore this idea of applying a non-stock Android experience on to a Moto device, however, in the Chinese market, it is known that the stock Android experience is not as popular as custom Android experiences.

This has been proven from companies such as OnePlus, who provide an alternative UI to the home market, known as ‘HydrogenOS’; whilst international customers would most likely find their devices running OxygenOS which is very close to stock Android.

If Lenovo does offer Moto devices with a ZUI option, we would expect them to be found mostly in China or other Asian markets, however, we cannot rule out Lenovo’s strategy to introduce an alternative UI for the international market either.

But this leak can also be questionable, there is the possibility that the Moto Z2 Play could have had a ZUI ROM installed after purchase. On the other hand, considering the home market’s trend on custom Android experience, this can be completely genuine and if so, Lenovo is all set to releasing a ZUI Moto smartphone.

Xiaomi’s Mi Mix is a difficult phone to get hold of, but that hasn’t stopped manufacturers from reverse engineering the Xiaomi Mi Mix and releasing a smaller recreation of the highly-demanded smartphone.

The Mi Mix look-a-like, named ‘Ukooo UMIX’, has been sighted on online retailer Taobao, priced at an eye-catching ¥688 (~$100).

From the pictures shown, the Ukooo UMIX  appears to clearly resemble the Mi Mix.

The manufacturer has made a very good effort at reproducing the Xiaomi Mi Mix, especially with the screen. According to the source, the side bezels are three times closer to the edge of the smartphone in comparison to the Mi Mix. However, this claim has not been verified.

Mid-Low Specifications

In terms of specifications, the smartphone displays a 5.5-inch 1080p screen, powered by a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor (+ 8 core graphic processor)¹, paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The rear dual-camera setup consists of a 13MP and 8MP camera whilst the selfie shooter will be an 8MP camera.

From the source, the phone will support two nano-SIM cards as well as 4G TD-LTE and FDD-LTE, but no bands have been clarified.

The design of the phone mimics Mi Mix’s ceramic uni-body and 3D glass covering the display.

As mentioned before, the price of the Ukooo UMIX is currently ¥688 (~$100).

Our thoughts: This phone seems very promising in design and if the source is accurate, this phone could provide a high-quality feel.

The source’s details on the internal components are inaccurate. However, what we can make from the provided CPU model the device is aimed at the low end of the market. The RAM count is also sketchy as the MT6737T only officially supports up to 3GB RAM. We expect the internal storage to be running on eMMc speeds.

According to rumors, the Vivo X11 will be starring a near bezel-less display and expected high screen-to-body ratio. To tease Vivo fans more, this Saturday, an industry leaker has added that the device will be arriving soon.

It appears that Vivo will be skipping the X10 name, following their trend from the X7 and X9. It is believed that the Vivo X11 will directly replace the Vivo X9 and X9 Plus as the new successor, thus we will be expecting at least two different sizes being released early on under the model name.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have claimed that the X11 will resemble closely to the design language of the each other like it’s X9 predecessor.

Rumored Vivo X11 Specs

Compared to the X9, leaks suggest that the Vivo X11 will present ultra-thin bezels on the top and bottom of the screen side of the smartphone, accompanied with an edge-to-edge display covered in what is most likely 2.5D glass.

In relation to the display, the X line has remained loyal to the 1080p camp. However, according to the same speculators, Vivo may be expected to switch to a higher resolution 1440p “2k” display to reassure that they remain attractive and competitive with other upper mid-range devices.

The Vivo X11 is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 660, an upgrade from the Vivo X9 Plus’ Snapdragon 653. We would also expect the Vivo X9 to be upgraded with 6GB RAM and the X9 Plus with 8GB RAM; in terms of internal storage, we are less certain whether Vivo will increase the base storage from the current 64GB.

Expandable storage will most likely not be offered on the X11, in consideration to the tradition of its predecessors not including it.

Embedded Optical Fingerprint Sensor?

Another rumor that fits into the upcoming X line-up is the possibility of Vivo including an integrated optical fingerprint sensor within the screen. If these claims are true Vivo may be the first company to introduce such a sensor to consumers.

With the iPhone 8 rumor mill turning and fingers pointing to a suggested September release, more leaks have surfaced of what appears to be iPhone 8 ‘clones’.

A microblogger called @DigitalChatStation have revealed a video showing someone holding what appears to be an iPhone clone. From the what we can see, this device has the obvious Apple Logo on the back of the device. What’s interesting is how the device has, what we can guess is, an iPhone 7 camera set-up rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

The home-button has been repositioned at the back of the device, leading to what we can see at the front of the phone is a button-less ‘iPhone’, the screen-to-body ratio seems to be extremely large, hovering around 80-90%, with a slim top and bottom bezels.

What also stands out is the curved sides of the screen, making the iPhone seemingly conceding to the trend for curved screens that have been pioneered by Samsung.

A couple of months ago, another concept, showing a more Samsung S8’esque’ design also removed the physical home button from the front, however it didn’t indicate whether the ‘iPhone’ had a physical home button on the back, or if the smartphone had an optical fingerprint sensor underneath the location of the virtual home button. Other companies’ prototypes have reportedly been leaked on functioning optical fingerprint sensors.

We can also see that the screen resembles an uncanny feel mirroring a Samsung S8; notably the curved sides and the rounded corners of the screen.

Rounding it up; questionable leaks have been seen, to what resembles an iPhone 8 clone but also clear inspiration from Samsung S7 and S8’s display. Personally, this leak should be rather doubtful to believe. However, it doesn’t hurt to imagine what a cross-design between two popular devices can create.

The Huawei’s Honor 9 has arrived fully-spec’d to rival Xiaomi’s Mi 6 in the affordable high-end flagship battle. For all smartphone enthusiasts or consumers who would like a good price for a high-end device, picking the right device is a tricky decision. So, it makes sense to compare the two flagships from China, the Huawei Honor 9 vs Xiaomi Mi 6.

In this article, we will be comparing each phones’ primary features and help determine which option is best for you.

Display & Design

In terms of design, both smartphones share very similar characteristics, front and back glass-covered bodies with a metal rim on the sides. Dimensionally, the Xiaomi Mi 6 sizes at 145.17 x 70.49 x 7.45 mm whilst the Honor 9 at 147.3 x 70.9 x 7.5 mm; both devices operate as very slim slates, with the Honor 9 only thicker by a meager 0.05mm in depth, 2.13mm by height and 0.41mm by width. For long period use both phones come in light packages, Mi 6 at 168g and Honor 9 at a superlight 155g. Note: The Mi 6 also comes in a premium ceramic model, weighing at 182g.

Display

Both smartphones come with IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass, both sporting 5.15inch and resolution at 1080p (Full HD) at ~428 PPI pixel density. Mi 6’s screen covers at ~71.4% body to screen ratio, whilst the Honor 9 at ~69.9% body to screen ratio¹.

In terms of display quality, we will be acquiring an Honor 9 unit soon for more accurate details; however, from our review on the Xiaomi Mi 6, the device hasn’t disappointed in the balance of vibrancy, sharpness and color reproduction. Xiaomi has also pushed the minimum brightness down to a single nit of brightness, which is very impressive in comparison to other 1080p smartphones panels.

Color Options

The Mi 6 is available four body color options: Black, Blue, White, and Ceramic Black; whilst the Honor 9 is available in: Sea Blue, Amber Gold, Black, Seagull Gray.

Other Features

The Mi 6 have removed the loved 3.5mm, whilst the Honor 9 has kept the feature.

Our Pick: Honor 9.

The Honor 9 provides more choice in color whilst Mi 6 offers more choice in material (glass and ceramic), screens are similar on paper, however, the Mi 6 offers a smaller dimensional package but the Honor 9 weighs 13g less. Still, here the Honor 9 steal the win here as they have provided a 3.5mm headphone jack also.

Hardware Specifications

Processor, RAM, and Storage:

The Mi6 will be powered by Qualcomm’s current fastest Snapdragon 835 processor. It has octa-core chipset which includes four 2.35 GHz Kryo & four 1.9 GHz Kryo processors coupled with Adreno 540 GPU. The Honor 9 is run with an in-house Kirin 960 Octa Core four 2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & four 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53.

In terms of RAM and the storage, the Mi 6 comes with 64 or 128 GB of internal storage options with 6 GB RAM. Whereas the Honor 9 comes in two variants, 64GB + 4 GB RAM and 64 or 128 GB + 6 GB RAM.

The Honor 9 offers external microSD expansion supporting up to 256GB, however, the Mi 6 does not support storage expansion slots. Keeping this in mind, it’s important for you to decide which variant to purchase in consideration to your future storage needs.

Battery:

The Mi 6 comes with 3350 mAh and the Honor 9 with 3200mAh, both of which are non-removable batteries.

Our Pick: Tie.

This section is a very close call, both phones are powered with very powerful CPUs, benchmarks will show that the Snapdragon 835 edges higher in integer performance (completing simple tasks, e.g. web browsing). However, Kirin 960 remains close to the 835’s tail, outpacing the 820/821 also. The Honor 9 offers more choice in models with internal storage as well as MicroSD expansion, however, Mi 6 theoretically will last longer with a larger battery size.

Honor 9 vs Xiaomi Mi 6: Camera

Rear shooters:

For photo-fanatics, we are spoilt with both smartphones offering with dual-lens. Mi 6 is loaded with 12-megapixel wide-angle lens with f/1.8, and 12-megapixel telephoto lens f/2.6 aperture; the Honor 9 has a 20-megapixel lens (Mono) with f/2.2 and another 12-megapixel lens (RGB) with f/2.2. Note that the dual cameras on the Honor 9 are not Leica branded. Xiaomi has promoted the Mi 6s feature of 4-axis OIS improving steadiness of video capture, whilst featuring a lossless zoom (x2) and providing a (x10) digital zoom.

Front shooters:

Both these smartphone cameras have the common features namely geo-tagging pics, touch focus, face detection, etc.

For the selfie lot, the Honor 9 has a f/2.0 8-megapixel lens and Mi 6 has an 8-megapixel sensor but with unknown aperture.

Our Pick: Unsure.

This seems to be too close, I have not had the opportunity to test out each smartphone side by side to provide my honest opinion. On paper, both smartphones show great features and the smartphone will depend on whether you would prefer better contrast pictures from the Honor 9, due to the monochrome sensor, or better zoom and wide aspect photos from the Mi 6.

Features & OS

Both flagships are shipped with expected high-end smartphones features such as 4G LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, fingerprint sensor, NFC, etc. The flagships both come with their own custom UIs, Mi 6 with MIUI 8.0 (based on Android v7.1.1) and Honor 9 EMUI 5.1 (based on v7.0).

Our Pick: Mi 6.

Mi 6 wins due to adapting relatively the latest Android Version currently. Personally, I like MIUI since it provides stable updates on a regular basis. As for Honor 9’s EMUI 5, I haven’t used it yet to judge how good it is. 

Availability & Pricing

The Mi 6 has an advantage here, as it has been released since April 2017 in the Chinese market already and available for the global market. The 64 GB and 128 GB versions of the release price for the Mi 6 is at ¥2,499 (~$367) and ¥2,899 (~$425) in China, these prices can be found cheaper on online retailers. Note: The price of the Ceramic version is much higher, priced at ~¥4132.81 ($607.99)³.

The Honor 9 will be on the backfoot here since it will be officially being on sale today. The Honor 9, 4GB RAM model will be priced at ¥2299 (∼$338), the 6GB RAM + 64GB variant will go for ¥2699 (∼$397), and the 6GB RAM + 128GB version will sell for ¥2999 (∼$441).

Opinion: Mi 6. Based on the release date prices, I believe the Mi 6 is the most ideal affordable smartphone to purchase on the date of publishing, this is because the Mi 6 is currently available and the directly competing models are more likely to be cheaper than the original release price from third-party retailers, not to forget the release prices for the Mi 6 are already lower. Huawei will need to receive comments from our reviewers and consumers on availability and price before further confirmation.

Honor 9 vs Xiaomi Mi 6: Conclusion

If you are already fans of either Xiaomi or Huawei, the choice will be rather simple, as both phone provide very similar specifications. However, if you are an indecisive consumer or looking to switch camps, these two flagships prove to be a very difficult couple to pick.

If you are someone who prefers a smartphone with the smallest footprint, different build material choice, bleeding edge internals, highest capacity battery, wide-angle & closeup photos, smoother videos; regular Android-based MIUI updates, connectivity with other same-branded products (Xiaomi’s smart-home products) and best prices (ex. Ceramic model), the Mi 6 is the best choice.

Whilst, if you prefer lightness, more ‘spec’ choices, 3.5mm headphone jack, powerful in-house CPU and better contrast photos, the Honor 9 is yours. Yes, the 3.5mm headphone jack could be a big advantage for the Honor 9, but we’ll have to see if it’s enough for consumers to pick the Honor 9 over Mi 6. The camera quality would be another big differentiating factor. We have seen that the Mi 6 manages to capture some great shots but we are yet to test Honor 9’s camera prowess.

ZUK‘s former CEO Chang Cheng has been pretty active on Weibo, often replying to fan’s questions. Recently when one of the fans asked him about the progress on the new ZUI update, he replied by saying that it would be close to stock Android, which is similar to the strategy adopted by the existing Moto brand’s UI.

ZUK’s software department is not new to the near-stock Android experience either, as in the past, the ZUK Z1 ran with the, now unsupported, Cyanogen OS 12.1; which also provided a custom stock Android UI. The popularity of in-house near-stock Android is increasing, for example, OnePlus’ successful OxygenOS and ZTE’s MiFlavor have become many non-Mainland Chinese UI favorites.

We will have to take this with a pinch of salt, as we may not be expecting the ZUI to be implemented on Moto devices, at least not outside China. However, with leaks that the defunct ZUK department was collaborating with the Moto team on a modular flagship device, we may see Lenovo release a modular phone with a new version of ZUI on it.

What is also important to note is that ZUK’s ZUI is still new to the global market, as it was first used in the ZUK Z2, not Z1, globally. However, if the rumors are true, the ZUI can provide another take on the stock Android, with a hint of the remaining ‘ZUKesque’ feel.

Personally, I think that Lenovo should stick to concentrating on the Moto line whilst improving the current near-stock Android experience already used in their system.

This month has been packed with OnePlus 5 leaks and teasers, both official and unofficially. However, cousin-company Vivo has had a fair share in the rumor mill.

A leak shows a familiar Vivo X9 Plus style design without a dedicated capacitive home button. Currently the majority of smartphones that have a featured fingerprint sensor, we would expect it to be located on the front-bottom of the phone or at the back off-center vertically; with the occasional exception, such as Sony’s side power button.

Report from Industry Analyst, Pan Jiutang, reveals a video showing a functioning Vivo prototype featuring the optical fingerprint sensor.

From the source, they claim that the appearance of this phone looks similar to the Vivo XPlay 6’s lock screen and the fingerprint button looks similar to the icon used in the Samsung S8. From the video, we can see that smartphone automatically unlocks when touching the screen instead of the usual tap on a button.

Pan Jiutang believes that Vivo will be the first in the under screen optical fingerprint scanner game, whilst Apple will more likely to break this technology into the ‘global mainstream’. He also adds that Samsung Note 8 would likely not house the feature.

Fueling the hype of the OnePlus 5’s release on June 20, a questionable render leak has been revealed showing the front of the OnePlus 5 alongside what could be an unofficial case.

According to report, the case has been officially named “The OnePlus 5 Electroplated Transparent Clear Silicone TPU Cover”, published on a site named, ‘Case Fanatic’. From further exploration, the website specializes in selling cases primarily for smartphones, but also cameras and select laptops. This unofficial render may prove to be the most accurate so far, however, everything is up in the air until OnePlus releases the smartphone.

From the gallery attached below, we can see initial inaccuracies with the top of the phone, where official images show a more tapered edge instead of a filleted one on the unofficial renders. However, the back of the phone resembles closely to the official, the dual camera setup and single flash, as well as an antenna line on the bottom half.

Recently, OnePlus CEO shared a picture of a winding road and commented on its beauty. However, one of the users suggested that this picture is probably a good depiction of the struggles it will take to get hold of the new OnePlus 5 once it launches on June 20. From the commentary, it suggests that OnePlus will have fans overcome a number of ‘winding obstacles’ for the OnePlus 5.

We believe this concern has become more prominent due to the issues with Qualcomm’s short supply of the Snapdragon 835, where other flagship phones, like LG’s G6, have skipped the component to reach the market early.

With concern from OnePlus fans about the OnePlus 5’s availability, OnePlus’ CEO stated the release will be a “relaxed and happy” experience, attempting to reassure consumers that OnePlus has enough Snapdragon 835 in stock for this year’s flagship; Pete Lau has seemed very confident when he stated this.

Another concern is the potential price hike of the flagship, suggestions point to a price increase to €550 ($615+), however this figure has not been confirmed.

Only time will tell if there’s enough stock of the OnePlus 5 to meet its possible huge demand.

OnePlus has confirmed on their Indian Site that four cities within the country will have pop-up events where participants will have the opportunity to purchase the OnePlus 5 in-store.

These events will happen between June 23 and June 25; where New Delhi will begin at 13:00-21:00 (IST +5:30 hours) on June 23; June 24, Bangalore at 12:30-22:00 and Chennai between 15:00-21:00, on the final day Hyderabad 15:00-21:00.

OnePlus haven’t announced the official price in India yet; if we take numbers from the rumor mill, the expected price will be Rs. 32,999 (~$513) for the 64GB paired with 6GB RAM model, whilst the 128GB and 8GB RAM model will be set at Rs. 37,999 (~$590).

Due to the large fan base in India, OnePlus may expect large crowds of fans on each day, especially in populous cities such as New Delhi and Chennai.

Before the pop-up events begin, OnePlus will be launching the OnePlus at a live event on June 22, 14:00 (IST) at NSCI Dome Mumbai.

As the days grow closer, we hope the OnePlus 5 hype will not be a disappointment. We will be expecting OnePlus to provide a continuous record of high-quality flagships, keeping in mind that OnePlus hasn’t solidly confirmed what the components are in their fifth installment (counting the 3T as their fourth).

For the lucky ones that are able to attend the pop-up event, OnePlus is reminding participants that the number of OnePlus 5 stock will be limited.

An emerging report claims Qualcomm has opened new relationship talks with TSMC to develop a 7nm system-on-chip (SoC). Since the past few years, Qualcomm has collaborated with Samsung to produce its chips, such as the Snapdragon 820 and 835-series. However, judging by the reporter, it appears Qualcomm has lost interest in prolonging their partnership and have turned to TSMC to draw up a new business relationship, the same company that previously manufactured the Snapdragon 810.

There isn’t any clarification why Qualcomm has made a switch to TSMC, speculation indicates that Samsung’s in-house Exynos chipsets’ success may have played a decisive role in the change in Qualcomm’s tactics. We do know that Samsung has been pushing other third-party chips out of their system and replacing them their own ones, note: the Samsung S8’s CPU chip in one of the variants is a Samsung Exynos.

There are also rumors that Samsung has a GPU under the works, if this is true, this would place Samsung and Qualcomm directly head to head; and with Samsung currently making Qualcomm’s chips, this makes the relationship’s situation quite troublesome.

Other factors, affecting Qualcomm’s decision, could be the fact that TSMC has increased the development process of the 7nm, contrary to the 10nm process. With a schedule set at late 2018 to produce the 7nm chips, Qualcomm would like to jump ahead of the processor game and take advantage of the potential benefits that competitors like Samsung could be behind in development.

If any of the rumors happen to be true, we are likely to see the first TSMC-manufactured chips available at the beginning of 2019, on schedule for the announcement of the year’s early flagship phones.

Huawei’s Honor 9 has officially been released in China and judging from the immediate specs, we are looking at a fit contender to Xiaomi’s Mi 6.

Spokesperson Hu Ge stated that Zhao Ming, President of Huawei Honor brand, has responded to the feedback on previous launches of Honor models; reassuring there is a sufficient amount of stock to meet consumer demand.

According to NetEase’s reports, the Honor 9 release conference was postponed for one month to assure consumers that there was an adequate supply of devices available after the announcement.

Other smartphones have suffered from the demand for new 2017 Snapdragon 835 devices. Mi 6, and other expected smartphones, powered by the Snapdragon 835 and equipped UFS Storage, have been affected by stock shortages due to the tight supply chain distributing to the manufacturing of the Samsung S8.

The Honor 9 seems to be unlikely to be affected due to being powered by Huawei’s in-house CPU Chipset, Kirin 960; found in last year’s flagship models such as the Mate 9. This is expected due to reports of stable, consistent production and high successful yields.

Making the Honor 9 a very attractive rival to the Mi 6, this including the included 3.5mm headphone jack, MicroSD expansion, and dual camera setup. The likely swing factors being a choice between UIs and the market prices.
