Fitbit has started rolling out an update to its app that changes how its personal health coach works. The update touches fitness plans, coaching, daily insights, and sleep tracking. It is part of the latest app version, with some features still being tested in Public Preview.

For Premium users, the main addition is personalised weekly fitness plans. These plans set targets based on user goals and suggest workouts accordingly. During the Public Preview phase, the system can adjust recommendations based on feedback. Fitbit is also adding the option to edit plans, targets, and workouts, which is expected to roll out next week.

The coaching experience has been updated as well. Recommended workouts now come with step-by-step instructions, so users can follow sessions more easily. The “Ask Coach” feature has also been improved. Instead of fixed prompts, users can now interact with it in a more natural way to check progress or get suggestions.

There are also changes in the “Today” tab. Users will start seeing updates at different points in the day, including a morning check-in, a summary after workouts, and an end-of-day recap. Weekly progress summaries are also being added. The idea is to give users regular updates without needing to look for the information.

Sleep tracking is part of this update too. Fitbit has begun rolling out a redesigned Sleep Score. It now shows a clearer breakdown of how the score is calculated, which makes it easier to understand sleep patterns.

The rollout is gradual and will vary depending on region, device, and app version. Premium users will get the weekly plans, while Public Preview users will see newer coaching features first. Other updates, including guided workouts and daily insights, will continue to roll out over the next few weeks.

Fitbit is widening access to its personal health coach, which is currently in Public Preview. The feature is rolling out to free and Premium users on Android and iOS across 37 countries, including India, and will reach more users over the coming weeks.

The Preview version supports 27 languages. Earlier updates also pointed to a broader expansion up to 32 languages, covering options like Hindi, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish, so users can interact with the coach in a language they are comfortable with.

Inside the Fitbit app, the coach uses existing health data to offer insights and suggestions. It pulls in metrics such as steps, distance, calories burned, sleep, weight, and body fat. There is also support for third party data through Health Connect, which lets users bring in information from other apps and devices. The app combines data from different sources and shows where it is coming from, with filters available above each graph.

Fitbit has also added VO2Max, earlier known as Cardio Fitness Score, to the Preview. This brings cardio fitness tracking into the coaching experience.

Since this is still a Preview, several features are missing. Health tracking does not yet include blood glucose logging, body temperature tracking, or manual edits to sleep data. On the fitness side, advanced running metrics are not available for Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4 users.

Social features are also not part of the Preview. This includes friends, groups, leaderboards, messages, badges, and workout sharing. Other missing features include exporting TCX files, syncing with Aria Air, and switching to a children’s view.

Some Health Connect data types are also not supported yet, including workout sessions, routes, heart rate variability, breathing rate, resting heart rate, SpO2, and temperature. Fitbit says these will be added later.

On the surface, the kid’s mode has a very similar experience to a regular Apple Watch. It lets your child keep the same watch faces as yours or use apps like iMessage, Apple Music, and Siri. But its biggest perk is GPS tracking. 

The service also integrates seamlessly with Apple’s Find My app, so parents can see their child’s location in real time. And you can set up notifications for when your child reaches school or arrive home. 

There’s also Schooltime mode, which locks the watch to a simple clock face. You can schedule it to activate during class hours and if the child disables it, you’ll be notified of it. 

But an Apple Watch for kids isn’t exactly cheap. It’s an option if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem and want a connected smartwatch for your child. In this case, any Apple Watch with cellular support will do the job.

But if you’re looking for a new one, the best option is the Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen) because it’s the most affordable model available.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7

Like Apple, Samsung doesn’t offer a kid-specific smartwatch. Instead, it provides a dedicated mode for its Galaxy Watch that works similarly to Apple’s solution — but for Android phones.

To set up the smartwatch for your child, you’ll need to use the Google Family Link app. This lets you establish guardrails, such as trusted contacts for calls and texts or GPS tracking. And since it’s a full-fledged smartwatch just with a kid mode, you can access all the apps available on the Play Store. 

Of course, parents have control over what their kids can use, and there’s a School Time mode — similar to Apple Watch — that limits functionality during school hours to help kids stay focused. In an emergency, kids can also activate the SOS feature by pressing the side button five times. 

As mentioned earlier, there’s no dedicated Samsung watch for kids. However, the Galaxy Watch for Kids mode is currently available only on the Galaxy Watch 7 LTE model in the US, supported by AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks. The feature is relatively new, having launched just in January this year, so it’s likely to roll out to older Galaxy Watch models in the future.

That said, like Apple’s solution, this isn’t the most budget-friendly way to keep track of your kids. If you’re looking for something more affordable, we’ve got a few options below.

Fitbit Ace LTE

Launched in August 2024, the Fitbit Ace LTE is designed specifically for kids, with games, activity tracking, location sharing, and built-in LTE for calls and messaging. 

To access calling, texting, and location sharing, you’ll need the Ace Pass, a $9.99-per-month subscription that enables LTE connectivity. While the watch can still be used without a subscription, its capabilities are limited to just basic movement and step tracking.

Unlike the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Ace LTE doesn’t support third-party app downloads. Instead, it comes preloaded with games designed to keep kids entertained.

The Ace LTE works as a standalone device and is cross-platform. Parents can set it up through the Fitbit Ace app on Android or iOS, where they can manage contacts (who also need the Ace app), and enable school hours which disables games and calls. You can also, of course, track your child’s location which also syncs with Google Maps. 

A notable safety feature of the Fitbit Ace is the “Call for Help” feature. The child can press and hold the top-side button to activate it which will begin a five-second countdown. If canceled in time, nothing happens. But if it reaches zero, the watch automatically dials emergency contacts, starting with the primary parent.

It’s a kid-friendly smartwatch with solid safety features—but like most connected wearables, you’ll need to pay extra to unlock its full potential.

Xiaomi Smart Kids Watch

Xiaomi’s Smart Kids Watch is one of the most affordable options out there with built-in GPS tracking. It features two-way calling, and GPS making it a solid pick for parents looking for a safety-focused smartwatch for their kids. The battery life? Better than many competitors.

The standout feature here is video calling. Yes, the watch has a tiny camera built into the top bezel, letting parents not only talk to their kids but also get a quick look at their surroundings. Unlike pricier LTE-enabled wearables, Xiaomi’s watch relies on Wi-Fi for video calls. It also supports voice messages of up to 15 seconds, so kids can send quick updates without hopping on a call.

There’s also a Do Not Disturb mode, which mutes calls and messages during set periods—perfect for school hours or bedtime. It also has an SOS button that instantly alerts designated emergency contacts, ensuring quick assistance in case of an emergency.

It also has a built-in adventure feature that encourages kids to stay active with virtual rewards, though much of it happens in the companion app rather than on the watch itself.

The Bounce offers an incredible battery life of about 35–50 hours depending on GPS use. However, LTE features require a $10/month subscription, and the watch’s location boundaries are limited to fixed-radius circles, making precise tracking tricky. Despite some quirks, the Garmin Bounce is a solid option for parents looking for a connected, safety-focused smartwatch for their kids.

Just over a month had passed since its last significant outage when users began reporting problems synchronising their devices. Certainly, it appears that another server failure that hampered Fitbit’s ability to sync data from devices occurred.

You will not be able to check on data from a Pixel Watch 2, Fitbit Charge 6, or any other device using the Fitbit app this morning. Starting at around 11 a.m. ET on November 16, 2023, a widespread outage brought the app offline.

Several individuals also shared their problems on social media including Reddit. They said, that when they attempted to sync the Fitbit Charge 6, the data would not appear in the app itself, even though they could open the app and start a manual sync.

If you haven’t manually synced your device in a few hours, the app could not display any data at all due to the outage. It also prevents the app from displaying any current data. The outage is affecting a number of accounts on the US East and West coasts, and DownDetector users are reporting it extensively.

Shortly after confirming that they were aware that users were “experiencing issues,” Google said that the issue had been resolved. “We’ve fixed the problem that was causing certain Fitbit app problems for our users. Customers who are still having issues should get in touch with customer care, said Google representative.

In a strategic decision that has largely flown under the radar, Google, the parent company of Fitbit, has announced the discontinuation of Fitbit product sales in 29 countries across the globe. This move has affected regions in Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

The European countries that will no longer be able to purchase Fitbit products include Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Slovakia.

Fitbit premium has already been discontinued in these countries, effective October 24, 2023. However, the Fitbit Charge 6 is still available for purchase in Portugal through the Google Store (via 9to5Google).

The discontinuation of Fitbit sales has also extended to Mexico and all Latin American countries. The specific dates for these removals have not been disclosed, but Fitbit products are no longer available for purchase in these regions.

Earlier in August, Google also discontinued the renewal of Fitbit Premium memberships and product sales in a few Asian countries, including Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

As a result of these market withdrawals, Fitbit is now only selling products in 23 countries.

In a statement to Android Authority Google says, “We communicated that we will stop selling Fitbit products in select countries to align our hardware portfolio to map closer to Pixel’s regional availability.” 

Despite this retreat from certain markets, Fitbit has assured existing customers that their devices will continue to receive software and security updates, and customer support will remain unaffected.

Fitbit has announced the Charge 6, its latest fitness tracker with a focus on more accurate heart rate tracking, Google services, and a longer battery life. Here are the details.

Fitbit Charge 6 Specifications

The Charge 6 looks almost similar to its predecessor, but it has a small haptic button on the left edge that provides vibration feedback when pressed. This button can be used to go back to the clock face or wake the screen, without having to rely on taps and swipes.

The tracker is made from 100% recycled aluminum and is available in three color combinations: Black with Obsidian, Silver with Porcelain, and Champagne Gold with Coral. It also has a Gorilla Glass screen protector and is water resistant to 50 meters.

As for the health and wellness feature, the most notable upgrade is its heart rate tracking. The tracker now uses the same heart rate tracking technology as the Pixel Watch. This results in 60% more accurate readings during vigorous activities like HIIT. Additionally, the Charge 6 also supports real-time heart rate streaming to gym equipment from brands like NordicTrack, Peloton, Concept2, and Tonal.

Additionally, the Charge 6 includes 20 new exercise modes, bringing the total to 40. New modes include strength training, skiing, and kayaking. The tracker also features an EDA (electrodermal activity) scan app that can detect changes in your skin’s sweat level, which can be a way to measure your body’s stress level.

Besides this, all of the core Fitbit features are still present on the Charge 6, such as step tracking, sleep tracking, and automatic workout recognition.

The Charge 6 also includes a number of Google services, such as YouTube Music (Premium subscription required), Google Maps, and Google Wallet. Despite all of these new features, the Charge 6 still gets a 7-day battery life (when the always-on display is turned off). It also uses the same magnetic charger as the Charge 5.

Price and Availability

The Fitbit Charge 6 is now available for pre-order for $159.95 from Amazon, and it will launch on October 12 in 30 countries. That price also includes six months of Fitbit Premium for free.

A new Fitbit Charge smart wearable entry could be launched soon. Back in August 2021, the Charge 5 was announced for the global market. Now, a fresh leak offers a first look at the Fitbit Charge 6 model. So here are all the details.

Fitbit Charge 6 Design & Colors

Sources close to the matter shared the renders with MySmartPrice. Looking at the images, we can see that the Charge 6 wearable model will have a similar design to the Charge 5. Although, a notable change in design is the inclusion of a physical button on the right side. Apart from this, it retains the silicone bands and a small rectangular display that has rounded corners. The renders show that the Charge 6 will arrive in multiple color options, including Black, Beige, and Orange.

Unfortunately, the leak does not reveal any finer details like specs and pricing about this upcoming wearable. But since it appears to feature a design similar to the Fitbit Charge 5, the Charge 6 could also sport an Always On display, various health related sensors, and GPS support. The Charge 5 features a 1.04-inch AMOLED panel that offers 450 nits of peak brightness along with a heart rate and SpO2 blood oxygen tracking.

Aside from biosensors, the smart wearable even helps track other physical activities like bike rides, running, yoga, and much more. On a single full charge, the Charge 5 can last for up to a whole week, with a full charge taking just 2 hours. We can expect slight changes in specs but the company shouldn’t make drastic overhauls in the gadget. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take this news with a pinch of salt.

Fitbit rolled out its newly redesigned app. Additionally, the Google-owned subsidiary also teased a new device that is likely set to debut next week. A short teaser shared on X (formerly Twitter) hints at the arrival of the Charge 6. It is expected to be the successor to the Charge 5 that debuted way back in 2021. For those unaware Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 and the latter’s upcoming product launch happens to be just a few days ahead of the search giant’s annual Pixel event. 

Fitbit Charge 6 teased to arrive next week

On X, Fitbit teased the product unveiling on September 28, next Thursday. The six-second teaser shared on the microblogging platform shows a person swinging their arms with a wrist-worn tracker that looks similar to the previous Charge devices. We can notice the screen, case, and band. This points to the arrival of the Fitbit Charge 6. 

As per 9to5Google, the Fitbit Charge 6 will look identical to its predecessor, the Charge 5. However, there will be one noticeable change. The Google-owned subsidiary will resurrect the physical button to navigate and access various functions easily. The Fitbit Charge 6 is also expected to come with integration for Google apps and services like YouTube Music for playback control and Maps for navigating purposes. 

Previously a Fitbit device had passed the FCC certification website. It was listed as a “Google LLC Wireless Device G3MP5”. This solidifies that the brand is indeed planning to launch a new tracker which could potentially be the Charge 6.

Back in 2021, Fitbit started a research initiative with the aim to measure blood pressure without the traditional arm-cuff method. The study was conducted with a number of U.S. Fitbit Sense users to determine how pulse arrival time (PAT) can be used to measure blood pressure. Now, the Google-owned company has filed a patent for a new blood pressure wearable technology that may soon debut with a new smartwatch.

The patent documents show a wearable with a pressure sensor in the display, which imitates a blood pressure cuff. To measure the blood pressure, the wearer will have to pressure the sensor on the panel specifically with their index finger— as it is where the radial artery is located.

The mechanism is almost similar to a traditional blood pressure cuff, which is placed around the stretched-out upper arm, and inflated until no blood can flow through the brachial artery. The strength of the heart rate against that pressure is measured to obtain the blood pressure.

The filing says the wearer could be given on-screen instructions to apply the right amount of pressure on the wrist. Also, a PPG sensor will measure the heartbeat, allowing the device to provide systolic and diastolic readings. Systolic readings refer to the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats, while diastolic readings can be defined as the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats.

“A user applies a variable pressure to his or her blood vessels while a PPG sensor measures the amplitude of blood volume pulses. The resulting PPG signal and associated pressure data is used to calculate blood pressure. Standard approaches to determining blood pressure from oscillometric data can be used,” reads the description of the patent.

The latest software update on the Fitbit Versa 2 smartwatch could be causing problems for the device. Numerous owners of the Versa 2 have reported their devices becoming unusable after installing the update. The update has possibly rendered some units to be unresponsive and this could be due to an unresolved bug.

The major issue reported by users of the Fitbit Versa 2 is that its touchscreen is no longer functional. The latest Versa 2 update with firmware number v35.72.1.23 was expected to fix outstanding bugs but obviously, not all bugs were captured. However, it is noted that the bug is not present in some Versa 2 units. In some affected units, it is impossible to get past the lock screen, and restarting the unit does not help either. Members of the Fitbit community who complained about the issue also stated that even a factory reset does not resolve the issue.

It was also reported that users who did a factory reset to the Versa 2 units were unable to pair the device with a smartphone thereafter. We are yet to get any official Fitbit statement on the seemingly widespread malfunction issue relating to the Versa 2. It is therefore advisable that owners of the Versa 2 should not install any updates yet for their devices. This will safeguard their devices pending the resolution of the widespread screen freezing of the Versa 2.

Last month, Fitbit announced the Sense 2, Versa 4, and Inspire 3 in the global markets. Now, all three devices have arrived in India today. The Sense 2 and Versa 4 are smartwatches whereas the Inspire 3 is a fitness band. The new smart wearables from the brand arrive as the successor to the last generation devices. All three wearable offerings from Fitbit come with a six-month Premium subscription. Read on to know what the devices offer out of the box. 

Fitbit Sense 2, Versa 4, Inspire 3 specifications and features 

The Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 4 are identical to each other. They come with a squarish dial with rounded edges and a thin, lightweight design. There is a physical button on the right side of the device. 

On the fitness tracking front, the Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 4 are equipped with a heart rate monitor, SpO2 sensor, skin temperature measurement, and also blood glucose tracker (in-app). Both wearable devices offer 40 fitness modes and more than 1,000 workouts. There is also a daily readiness score that is hidden behind the Fitbit Premium paywall. The only difference between the Sense 2 and Versa 4 is that the former also features a cEDA sensor i.e. continuous electrodermal activity scanning for accurate tracking of all-day stress. Additionally, the Sense 2 comes with a Body Response notification that recommends different ways to manage stress in the moment including mood logging, guided breathing, mindfulness sessions, on-wrist or in the Fitbit app.

The Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 4 are equipped with a built-in GPS and Alexa voice assistant. Google has promised that Maps and Wallet apps will be available in future on both smartwatches. 

As for the Fitbit Inspire 3, it resembles a regular fitness tracker. It is a small and light wearable device that is capable of monitoring a wide range of activities as well as heart rate, SpO2, sleep patterns, sedentary reminders, and stress. 

Apart from the differences, the Fitbit Sense 2, Versa 4, and Inspire 3 are water-resistant up to 5 meters. They come with an always-on display and are compatible with Android as well as iOS. The Sense 2 and Versa 4 have a battery life of up to 6 six days with support for fast charging whereas the Inspire 3 is claimed to last up to 10 days on a single charge

Fitbit Sense 2, Versa 4, Inspire 3 price in India

The Fitbit Sense 2 comes in Grey Graphite, Mis Soft Gold, and White Platinum colours. It is priced at Rs 24,999. On the other hand, the Versa 4 carries a price tag of Rs 20,499 and is offered in Graphite Black, Pink Sand, and Waterfall Blue colours. Lastly, the Fitbit Inspire 3 comes in Midnight Zen, Lilac Bliss and Morning Glow variants and it costs Rs 8,999 in India.

All three wearables can be purchased from Amazon starting today.

The Fast Pair and the host of Google apps are reflective of Google’s inputs on the Fitbit OS. The Fitbit Sense 2 has a battery life of 6+ days and can be charged fully within 12 minutes.

The Fitbit Versa 4 offers several fitness measurements and you can receive calls on the wearable. It has up to 40 sports modes that can be activated directly. It comes with GPS functionality and over 1,000 workout and mindfulness sessions via Fitbit Premium. The Versa 4 is lightweight, comfortable, and wearable. It is made from durable material that ensures the user is satisfied even during intense activities. The Versa 4 has a 6-day battery life and also features sleep monitoring.

The Fitbit Sense 2 is priced at $299.95 and comes with a 6-month Premium membership. The Fitbit Versa 4 will retail at $229.95 with a 6-month Fitbit Premium subscription. Both models will be launched this fall and can be pre-ordered from Fitbit.com.

Steve Hemmerstoffer, alias OnLeaks, shared the renders of all three Fitbit wearables today via Twitter. With the release of its fourth-generation smartwatch, the best-selling Fitbit Versa series will return. The Fitbit Sense, the first Android smartwatch with an ECG sensor, arrived on Indian soil in 2020. Its successor, the Fitbit Sense 2, will be available soon.

While the cost of these two is anticipated to be high, we can also anticipate the arrival of the less expensive Fitbit Inspire 3 fitness band with the Fitbit Sense 2 and Fitbit Versa 4.

Fitbit Sense 2

With the addition of a button on the side, Fitbit Sense 2’s design is very similar to that of the original Fitbit Sense. It boasts the same reliable curved display enclosed in a square dial with a metallic frame that we examined in our evaluation of its predecessor. The size of this panel is still a secret, though.

Remember that the original Fitbit Sense had flagship smartwatch capabilities that were exclusive to the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch4: an EDA sensor to detect stress levels, SpO2, improved heart rate tracking, 50m water resistance, voice assistant compatibility, and an ECG sensor. But this feature wasn’t accessible in India, like with many wonderful things in technology. This was introduced to Indian shores by Fitbit Sense, and we anticipate the second-generation Fitbit Sense to do the same.

Fitbit Inspire 3

Fitness trackers with lots of features that fit in the pocket are available in the Inspire series. The Inspire 3 won’t look anything like its predecessor, at least not totally, despite the fact that we don’t yet know its specifications.

The third-generation Fitbit Inspire sports a fully packed case that covers and holds the entire display, in contrast to the Fitbit Inspire 2’s disjointed appearance.

Fitbit Versa 4

The Fitbit Versa 4 is the last item on the list. Fitbit Versa is another flagship series of smartwatches in Fitbit’s arsenal. When the company launched its Fitbit Versa 3, it was hard to differentiate it from Fitbit Sense, as both spoke the same body language. The same can be said in the case of Fitbit Versa 4. This one is also forged in a way that looks akin to the Fitbit Sense 2. With Fitbit Versa 3, buyers got everything they could ever ask for from a smartwatch, at least for the price it came with, an AMOLED panel, built-in GPS, calling support, health tracking features, voice assistant, and decent battery life.

It is a no-brainer that the company will at least maintain these standards on the fourth-gen Fitbit Versa, if not bring significant upgrades to the table. We don’t expect an ECG sensor on Versa 4, as the recently unearthed images of the same didn’t show any sign of an ECG sensor. But with the loadout the Versa 4 is expected to come, it won’t be wrong to call it a lite version of the Fitbit Sense 2.

Availability and expected pricing

Like the Fitbit Sense, the Sense 2 may cost more than the Fitbit Sense’s Rs 22,999 in terms of price. There are three color choices available: Gold, Graphite, and Platinum.

The expected pricing of Inspire 3 and Versa 4’s pricing is yet to be confirmed but the more premium amongst these two, the Versa 4 will be priced cheaper than the flagship Fitbit Sense 2.

The Fitbit Versa 4 will come in two color options: Graphite and Rose. Meanwhile, the Inspire 3 will come in three color options: Yellow, Pink, and Black.

One of Fitbit‘s most sophisticated fitness trackers, the Charge 5, received an update last month in a covert manner. The Google-owned firm added the ability to locate your phone via the fitness tracker, even though it didn’t specify what the upgrade should do which intrigued the users and prospective buyers as to what the wearable device brand is bringing to the table. Notably, the Fitbit Charge 5 became available last year officially.

Recently, Fitbit revealed that the update brought a couple of new clockfaces in addition to the much-needed feature. A clockface in two color variations for the Boom is seen in the image above, along with a second clockface for the Luxe, another Fitbit wearable.

In order to be specific, Charge 5 customers will only receive the Boom clockface, which is available in two variations, whereas Fitbit Luxe owners will receive all three clock faces. In addition to these new customization choices, Luxe customers will have the same ability as Charge 5 users to locate their phones using the wearable device.

How to install the new app?

• Install the new Find Phone app on your tracker.
• Open it, and then tap Find Phone.
• Your phone should then begin to ring loudly, even if it is in the DnD (Do Not Disturb) setting. You can tap Cancel to stop the phone from ringing if you are able to find it.

Fitbit claims that the update is now accessible, but Charge 5 users may have already downloaded it when it originally appeared more than a week ago.

Leading global technology market analyst firm, Canalys has recently published a report on the state of the global wearables market in the first quarter of 2022. In the report, it is stated that 41.7 million wearables were shipped in Q1 2022 alone, of which basic fitness band shipments compromised of only 9.7 million (23.3 per cent of the market), while the rest of the market is held by basic watch and smartwatch shipments at a staggering 32.0 million. 

Overall the worldwide wearables market in Q1 2022 experienced total shipments fell by 4% YoY when compared to Q1 2021. This phenomenon is caused by the rapidly declining social relevance of fitness bands, but fortunately, shipments did not fall further due to the rising popularity of the basic watch and smartwatch market.

Currently, Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi are the Top 3 best-selling wearables brands globally. Apple dominates in first with its 22.1% market share. The company had shipped out 9.2 million of its Apple Watches in Q1 2022, which could be could be contributed to the brand launching not only its flagship Apple Watch Series 7 of smartwatches but also launching a more affordable Apple Watch SE smartwatch, providing more options for the consumers and capturing more of the market share. Due to this, the company experienced a positive 21% growth in annual sales when comparing Q1 2021 and Q1 2022.

Moving onto Huawei, the company rises up from third place last year to second place this year with 11.1% of the wearables market share and 4.1 million total shipments of its fitness bands and smartwatches. The brand remains steady in the wearables market with the main appeal of its smartwatches being the company’s OpenHarmony ecosystem. The OpenHarmony ecosystem allows Huawei smartwatches to not only be connected to your Huawei smartphone, but also to Huawei’s IoT smart devices as well. And that includes the company’s own electric vehicles. For example, you can use your Huawei Watch as digital car keys to unlock your Huawei Car.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, has dropped from second to third with 10.1% of market share and 4.2 million shipments, mainly due to dwindling sales of the brand’s fitness bands. As fitness bands continue to lose in popularity due to their smaller screens, the brand itself is already quietly switching its focus to developing smartwatches. But currently, Xiaomi smartwatches like the Xiaomi Watch S1 are still the company’s first attempts at the concept, and with the shifting marketing focus, the fitness band sales decline is to be accelerated as well.

Coming in at 4th and 5th are Samsung and Fitbit respectively. Samsung remains stable in the wearables market with an increased 8.1% market share in Q1 2022 at 3.4 million shipments, due to the company’s collaboration with Google’s Wear OS for its Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series of smartwatches. Meanwhile, Fitbit, which has been acquired by Google saw its sales drop to 2.9 million in Q1 2022 with 7% of the total wearables market share. 

Analysing the basic fitness band market, it has been on a steady decline since Q4 2020. The bands suffered a 37% decline quarter-on-quarter (Q4 2021 to Q1 2022), marking the sixth consecutive fall in the quarterly shipments since Q4 2020. And the 9.7 million shipments figure is the first time that the fitness band market has dipped below 10 million in a long time after it had peaked at 27.9 million in Q4 2019.

On the other hand, the basic watch and smartwatch market has seen positive growth YoY by up to 15%. The Canalys report has cited some reasons why watches are growing in popularity.

“Consumers are favouring watches over bands. With bigger displays, richer features and longer battery life, they believe watches are better able to fulfil their health-tracking and digital lifestyle needs,” said Sherry Jin, Canalys Research Analyst. “Basic watches are positioned as an affordable step-up from basic bands, suitable for price-conscious consumers with growing expectations as to what wearables can do.”

Google-owned Fitbit is facing a lawsuit claiming that the wearable maker’s entire product line has the tendency to overheat and cause burns to users. It seems that the issue has been occurring for some time but recently come to light. In March this year, Google had voluntarily recalled 1.7 million Fitbit Iconic units after reports emerged of the smartwatch causing burn injuries due to overheating. 

“Reasonable consumers purchase the products to burn calories – not their skin – and to safely pursue a healthy lifestyle with the aid of a smartwatch,” the complaint against Fitbit reads.

The two California-based plaintiffs who sued Fitbit and Google claim that the overheating problem is not only limited to the Iconic smartwatch. One plaintiff was using the Fitbit Versa Lite whereas the other had the Fitbit Versa 2. Both experienced overheating issues that resulted in burn injuries. The lawsuit claims that similar issues are present in other Fitbit products and the list includes Versa, Versa 2, Versa 3, Charge 4, Versa Light, Ionic, Sense, Alta HR, Inspire, Inspire HR, Inspire 2, and Blaze. 

The lawsuit also alleges that Fitbit customer support isn’t helpful in resolving the issue. The company has been accused of putting the blame on the customer. The court documents submitted by the plaintiffs include screenshots of public and private chats with Fitbit’s support channels. Additionally, it also mentions that although Fitbit promised full refunds for Iconic owners, it has been sluggish with the compensation process. 

Both Google and Fitbit could be in big trouble going forward if the overheating problem spans across Fitbit’s product line.

The global smart wearable company Fitbit has recalled its Fitbit Ionic. The recalling decision comes after Fitbit received more than 100 reports of burn injuries due to the smartwatch overheating. The device was launched back in September 2017 and offered features including activity tracking as well as heart and sleep monitoring.

Fitbit stopped producing the Ionic in 2020 and has sold about one million units of the smartwatch in the US market and around 693,000 in the global market until December 2021.

As compensation for the recall, the brand will be issuing a refund of $299 on a successful return of the Ionic watch to the company. The owners of the smartwatch will also get a discount code offering 40 percent off on select Fitbit devices according to the announcement made by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The commission has stated that Fitbit has so far received at least 174 reports of the watch’s overheating, with 118 reports of burn injuries that include two cases of third-degree burns and four second-degree burns.

The recall is limited to four variants of the Fitbit Ionic with the following model numbers: FB503CPBU, FB503GYBK, FB503WTGY, and FB503WTNV.

Consumers affected by this recall should visit help.fitbit.com/ionic for information on how to receive a refund. The company has stated that the refund will be equivalent to USD $299. Customers outside of the United States will receive the equivalent of USD $299 in their local currency.

Fitness trackers were one of the first products behind the popularity of wearable devices. While smartwatches are now taking over, fitness trackers still have the majority of the portion in the market share and Fitbit remains its leader.

After launching the Fitbit Charge 4 last year in March, the company is now gearing up to launch its successor in the market, dubbed Fitbit Charge 5. Ahead of the launch, some details about the upcoming wearable product have leaked online.

From the leaked renders, it looks like Fitbit will be overhauling the design of the Charge 5 fitness tracker. The company is moving away from the rugged look and the upcoming product has adopted curved edges with soft angles and a smoother-looking strap.

Also, instead of the monochrome screen in the past models, the upcoming model will be featuring a color display. Currently, not much is known about the hardware specifications of the Fitbit Charge 5 but it’s revealed to have an optical heart rate sensor and a SpO2 sensor for blood oxygen content.

It could also come with support for GPS to enable location tracking and Fitbit’s favorite EDA for stress measurement. There’s also a possibility of an ECG sensor for monitoring heart rhythm and warn users of potential arrhythmia problems.

The device will also include a premium subscription that offers personalized exercise recommendations and suggests times for resting and recovering with guided meditations and sleep tracking.

The leak also claims that the device will be available for purchase for the price of $179. The launch date is not yet known but going by the leaked images, which show the “23 Oct” date, it’s likely that the Fitbit Charge 5 will be made official on 23rd October.

The Fitbit Charge 4 was announced last year in March. It appears that Fitbit is now gearing up to launch the Fitbit Charge 5 as its successor model. The reason behind it is that reputed tipster Evan Blass has shared high-resolution renders of the Charge 5, which indicates that its launch could be near.

The leaked renders show that the Fitbit Charge 5 will be available in at least three color variants. Unfortunately, there is no information available on the specs of the fitness tracker.

The Charge 4 came with a backlit OLED panel. The leaked images confirm that the Charge 5 will be equipped with a color touchscreen. Being a fitness tracker, the Charge 5 may offer features like an optical heart rate sensor and a SpO2 sensor for blood oxygen content. The Oct. 23 date mentioned on the display could be the launch date of Charge 5. Hopefully, newer reports will spill information on the specs of the device.

To recollect, the Fitbit Charge 4 features a backlit OLED greyscale touch screen. It can last for up to 7 days on a single charge. However, it can run for only five hours with GPS on. It offers health tracking features like a 24/7 heart rate tracker, a SpO2 sensor, a sleep tracker, guided breath sessions, activity tracking, and goal-based exercise modes. The other features that are available on the Charge 4 include NFC for contactless payments, altimeter, 3-axis accelerometer, notifications alert, customizable watch faces, and Bluetooth 4.0. It is compatible with Android as well as iOS devices.

The Fitbit lineup of smart wearable devices will soon have a snoring detection feature added to them. There will also include an enhanced noise detection mechanism that will generate data on sound activity around the device’s wearer even while asleep.

Snoring is one sleep activity that could disrupt sleep for persons in the same room as the snorer. The snorer is unaware of the sounds emanating from his/ her nostrils while asleep and may even contest the claim of snoring. However, the new Fitbit feature is bound to provide strong evidence that there is a snoring activity in the room.

Of course, the device would be unable to identify whether the snorer is the one wearing the Fitbit device or not. The feature is currently available on the Fitbit app on Google’s Play Store. The snoring detection feature works by using the Fitbit device microphone to listen to ambient noise, including snoring picked up within the microphone range. The feature is bound to be a considerable drain on the device’s battery, and the utility of the snoring data collected all night looks unimportant.

Fitbit advises that users who want to use the feature must have up to 40% of battery life left in their devices. The Snore and Noise Detect feature, as it is called, will be able to identify whether the noise it is picking is snoring-related or not. The presence of white noise during the sleep period could hamper the operation of the snoring tracker, and the release notes specify that such white noise should be eliminated for optimal performance of the feature.

As stated earlier, there is little that could be done to the snoring data that will be generated by the new snoring detection feature on Fitbit. However, we could expect additional illumination from Fitbit soon.

Google-owned Fitbit has a new fitness tracker and this one is for the fashionistas. The Fitbit Luxe comes shortly after the kid-focused Fitbit Ace 3 that was announced last month. The new fitness tracker focuses on appearance and arrives as a challenger to the OPPO Band Style, another fitness tracker that has an elegant design. Is the Fitbit Luxe a worthy challenger? Let’s find out.

First, the Fitbit Luxe comes in at $149.95 which is well above the Rs 2,999 (~$40) launch price of the OPPO Band Style. We already know Fitbit products are not cheap compared to the competition but the almost $150 price tag includes a six-month subscription to Fitbit Premium which costs $9.99 per month.

With the price out of the way, let’s look at what makes the Fitbit Luxe luxurious. Fitbit says this is its thinnest touchscreen tracker yet. The device has a stainless steel case and a metal buckle and is available in four colors including a $199 special edition that has a Parker Link Bracelet from the jewelry brand, gorjana. Fitbit is also offering different straps that you can buy for the tracker. There are leather straps, steel mesh straps, and a platinum stainless steel gorjana link bracelet.

The Fitbit Luxe has a color AMOLED touch display that automatically adjusts its brightness based on your environment. It has 24/7 heart rate tracking, and with the Fitbit app, you can monitor metrics such as breathing rate, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and Sp02 level (even when sleeping). A Fitbit Premium subscription will allow you to get a detailed breakdown of your stress management score and sleep score.

The Fitbit Luxe can track 20 different exercise modes (automatic detection supported) including swim tracking, but note that not all the bands are designed to be immersed in water.

The fitness tracker will measure all your steps, distance, and calories burned. It also has menstrual health tracking, on-wrist guided breathing sessions, and support for calls, texts, and app notifications.  It also has a timer and stopwatch and a Do Not Disturb mode to mute calls and notifications during the day and a Sleep Mode to mute all notifications and turn off the screen when sleeping.

The new Fitbit has a 5-day battery life which is less than half of the 12-day battery life the OPPO Band Style boasts of. It also skips on built-in GPS like OPPO’s fitness tracker but you can connect it to your phone for real-time pace and distance on your wrist.

The Fitbit Luxe is already available for pre-order but there is no specific date for when it will be available. The special edition with the gorjana bracelet will be available in June.
