Tesla will officially stop producing the Model S and Model X by the end of Q2 2026. Sales of the Model S and X have been declining for years. By 2025, estimated deliveries dropped to around 30,000 units globally, far below Fremont’s 100,000-unit capacity. The models also faced strong competition from newer rivals like the Lucid Air and Rivian R1S. A minor refresh in 2025, paired with a price increase, failed to revive interest, making the discontinuation feel inevitable.

Fremont Factory Gets a New Role

Tesla’s Fremont factory will no longer focus on these low-volume premium cars. Instead, the production lines will be converted for advanced manufacturing projects, most notably Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus. This marks a clear shift in strategy away from legacy models toward future technologies.

Optimus and Tesla’s Bigger Bet

Optimus has been in development for years and is now a top priority. Tesla plans to begin production before the end of 2026, with possible public sales in 2027. Musk believes Optimus could become Tesla’s most important product, supported by major investments in AI and xAI.

The Future of Tesla

This move shows that Elon Musk believes Tesla has already achieved its original EV goal. Electric cars are now widely accepted, and they no longer need to be strongly pushed or explained to the public. Tesla has officially launched the 2026 Model Y with a 7-seat configuration in the US. The option is available only on the Premium All-Wheel-Drive Long Range variant, while all other Model Y versions remain limited to five seats. The third row adds two small seats in the rear, designed mainly for children due to limited legroom.

The Premium AWD Long Range Model Y starts at $51,490. Adding the third-row seats increases the price by $2,500. Tesla also now includes a 16-inch high-resolution infotainment screen and a black interior headliner as standard features, previously reserved for the Performance model. Buyers can also choose new 20-inch dark-grey “Helix” wheels for an extra $2,000.

This configuration shows that Tesla is responding to demand for more family-friendly options in a highly competitive SUV market. However, it is not a major leap forward. Other automakers are moving faster in the family-focused electric SUV space. Models like the Kia EV9 offer a true three-row layout with usable space for adults, easier third-row access, and a more traditional large-SUV feel. This makes them more practical for families compared to the Model Y’s small, trunk-based third row, which is mainly suitable for children.

Chinese EV brands are even further ahead. SUVs such as the BYD Tang, Nio/Onvo L-series, and Zeekr 009 already offer proper 6- or 7-seat layouts with longer wheelbases, better rear-row comfort, and more flexible interiors. Even Tesla sells a longer, more practical Model YL in China, but not in the US. 

In US, Tesla does face real competition from models like the Kia EV9, Rivian R1S, and upcoming large electric SUVs that offer true three-row seating with better space and comfort. This suggests that while Tesla’s 7-seat Model Y helps fill a gap, it is only a partial solution. 

Demand for large family EVs in the US does exist but remains limited, which likely explains Tesla’s cautious approach. However, compared with rivals offering more practical layouts, the new Model Y still feels more like a compromise than a fully developed family SUV.

BYD has overtaken Tesla in global electric vehicle (EV) sales through the first nine months of 2025. The Chinese automaker delivered 1.61 million battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) from January to September, compared to Tesla’s 1.22 million units. This marks a lead of 388,000 vehicles for BYD, based on data released by both companies.

BYD’s sales increased 37% year-on-year, while Tesla’s sales declined by 6%. This is the fourth consecutive quarter where BYD has outsold Tesla in global BEV sales. The data suggests that BYD is likely to finish the year as the top-selling EV brand globally.

Tesla posted a record quarter between July and September with 497,100 global deliveries. However, it still trailed BYD, which shipped 582,500 BEVs in the same period. Tesla’s strong quarter came as U.S. customers rushed to take advantage of federal EV subsidies that expired at the end of September.

Tesla’s performance in China also received a boost with the launch of the Model Y L, a six-seat long-wheelbase SUV. The model reportedly received 120,000 orders shortly after launch. However, Tesla continues to face pressure in Europe and Australia, where competition from local and Chinese brands has intensified.

While Tesla remains a BEV-only manufacturer, BYD continues to sell both BEVs and plug-in hybrids. This strategy has helped BYD maintain high volume despite intense price competition in China. Both models operate on ByteDance’s Volcano Engine cloud platform, which processes requests in real time through an encrypted API.

The company launched the system with the new six-seat Model Y L SUV, which went on sale in August. Unlike older Tesla models in China that require pressing a steering wheel button, the Model Y L supports a wake phrase. Drivers can say “Hey Tesla” or set a custom word to activate the assistant hands-free.

Tesla’s choice of partners reflects its push to localize features for the Chinese market. Domestic rivals such as BYD, Nio, and Xpeng already use advanced AI voice assistants, giving them an advantage in customer experience. Tesla has officially launched the Model Y electric SUV in India, marking the company’s long-anticipated debut in the country. The launch follows a teaser released last week and coincides with the opening of Tesla’s first Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.

Tesla will offer two rear-wheel drive variants of the Model Y. Bookings are now open on the official website, and deliveries are scheduled to begin later this year. The base Rear-Wheel Drive variant will start shipping in Q3 2025, while the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive model will be available from Q4 2025. Initial deliveries will be limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.

The Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at ₹60,99,690 (on-road), while the Long Range version costs ₹69,07,690. These prices include registration and taxes but may vary depending on state regulations.

The Model Y features a minimal exterior design with updated front and rear lightbars, a panoramic glass roof, and acoustic laminated glass to reduce road noise. Inside the cabin, Tesla has included soft-touch materials, ambient lighting, and aluminum trim. The dashboard features a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch display for rear passengers.

Both variants include heated and ventilated front seats, heated and power-reclining second-row seats, and dual-zone climate control. Tesla claims the standard Model Y offers a WLTP range of 500 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range model increases the range to 622 km and completes the same sprint in 5.6 seconds.

The Model Y supports Tesla’s digital ecosystem, which includes Tesla Theater for streaming, Tesla Arcade for in-car gaming, and app-based remote controls. Standard features also include a 9-speaker sound system, dashcam and Sentry Mode, Bluetooth rear seat controls, and route-aware charging suggestions.

Safety features include Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Avoidance. Tesla has included eight external cameras, including a new front-facing unit, to support future software-based driver-assist upgrades.

Customers can opt for additional upgrades such as exterior paint options priced between ₹95,000 and ₹1,95,000, a Black and White interior for ₹95,000, and Full Self-Driving Capability for ₹6,00,000.

Tesla plans to expand its presence across metro cities in India, including New Delhi. The company also aims to build local support infrastructure such as service centers, delivery hubs, and charging stations.

Tesla’s pricing in India remains significantly higher than in the U.S., where the Model Y starts at $44,990. The price increase is largely due to high import duties and luxury taxes. Tesla has not yet confirmed any plans for local manufacturing, which would make the Model Y eligible for lower import duties under India’s new EV policy.

Tesla has even secured a 4,000 square foot space on the ground floor of the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This showroom will host Tesla’s official Indian debut. After the Mumbai reveal, the brand also has plans to open another flagship showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity.

Unfortunately, the exact region of the Delhi showroom is still unclear. This news also arrives after Elon Musk (Tesla CEO) met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tesla apparently has plans to make its EVs more affordable in India. While its cheapest Tesla Model 3 starts from 40,000 US Dollars, rumors hinted at the brand working on a 25,000 US Dollar model for the Indian market. This roughly translates to about 22,00,000 INR (or 22 lakh INR).

With Tesla entering the Indian EV segment, the entire industry can expect a big impact with the brand bringing cutting edge technology like the autopilot feature. Although, it remains to be seen how the company implements most of these features. Tesla is expected to be planning local manufacturing and could be in talks with the Indian government. But the initial models would likely be imported from China.

Tesla unveiled its innovative new Cybercab earlier today (11th October 2024). The ambitious robotaxi carries a $30,000 price tag and features a completely autonomous design with no steering wheels or pedals. While all of this sounds pretty futuristic and impressive, one innovation that stood out for me was the innovative new wireless charging technology. So what is it all about? Can it revolutionize electric vehicles? Read on to find out.

Tesla Cybercab: What makes it special?

The American EV maker’s Cybercab features a sleek new design that borrows looks from the Cybertruck and Robovan. It is a two seater vehicle that is designed to offer a relaxing ride to passengers. This is clearly signified in Tesla’s decision to remove the steering wheel entirely. The Cybercab arrives with a gold finish on the exterior, with a light bar that houses matrix headlights.

The smart taxi also relies heavily on cameras and sensors for a 360 degree view. Its hatchback design blends comfort with a lounge-like atmosphere. Elon is clearly pushing hard on the FSD (full self driving) cars with this announcement. Musk is expecting this small EV that costs less than $30,000 to arrive sometime before 2027. So we can expect a mid to late 2026 release.

Induction Wireless Charging: Future of EVs?

Tesla Cybercab could be changing the game in electric vehicles. The robotaxi is the first of its kind, introducing wireless induction charging technology. Why is this so important? current gen EVs still have a wired charging format. But the new Cybercab features no physical charging port, the first Tesla car to remove it. Thanks to inductive charging, the self driving vehicle charges wirelessly using electromagnetic fields to transfer energy from a charging pad to the battery.

In the official announcement, Elon Musk casually stated “The robotaxi has no plug. It just goes over the inductive charger and charges. So, yeah, that’s kind of how it should be.” He also added that “The future has to look like the future”, and these design choices are clearly of a vehicle from the near future. Unfortunately, the launch event did not reveal any finer details like the technical specs of this robotaxi. So we are unsure about Cybercab’s battery size or how induction technology’s charging rate.

The Possibilities are Endless

Interesting rumors have also pointed at the induction tech possibly using mats or tracks on roads as well. All of this, in theory, could also help with the long queues at public charging stations that plague cities that have a higher adoption of EVs. There are many issues related to charging faced by EV owners.

One of the big issues also includes charging station compatibility. The infrastructure around EVs for the public includes meeting the requirements to plug and power your car. But these incompatibility problems might disappear if the entire EV segment switches to a common wireless charging standard like Qi wireless charging on smartphones. Although, it is still too early to tell since we’re still a few years from such vehicles hitting the road, but Tesla’s Cybercab does offer us a glimpse of EVs in the future.

Elon Musk pulled the curtain back on a new, electric, autonomous vehicle at Tesla’s “We, Robot” event in Los Angeles on Thursday night. Called the Robovan, it is a prototype that’s roughly the size of a bus and is designed for transporting people and goods within high-density areas.

According to Musk, the Robovan is capable of carrying up to 20 passengers or cargo. The Robovan also has a distinctive retro-futuristic aesthetic, like the Tesla Cybercab unveiled at the same event. 

It has a silver metallic body with black accents and is adorned with sleek strips of lighting. It looks like, to me, something Iron Man would drive if he needed a van.

It has sliding doors that open to reveal the interior, which includes seating, standing space, and tinted windows— all without a steering wheel. After Cybercab, it’s another vehicle from Tesla that’s fully autonomous in nature.

And while the robotaxi is said to get the cost of transport down to around 20 cents a mile, the Robovan is claimed to take that even further, down to just 5-10 cents a mile.

The video below shows the Robovan in action, and it certainly looks like something out of the future. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see design changes when it becomes a reality. For instance, the Robovan has a low ground clearance, which is clearly not practical for city roads.

Musk is quite optimistic about Tesla Robovan

Musk, however, didn’t reveal much about the specifics of the van. And since it’s a prototype, details on the price, production plans, and a release date remain unclear. It will not be a cheap vehicle, though, that’s for sure. 

Musk, however, said, “We’re going to make this.” But take the statement with a bit of skepticism as Tesla has a history of missing self-imposed deadlines. Adding to the uncertainty, this is just a prototype. The final design and production timeline are far from certain. 

While the Robovan is undeniably eye-catching, it isn’t a novel concept for an autonomous van. We’ve seen similar concepts from companies like Zoox and Cruise, albeit on a smaller scale. China’s WeRide has also unveiled a comparable Robobus.

It’s designed for a world where passengers relax and let the car handle the driving. However, there are some doubts in terms of its self-driving capabilities. Let’s get into the details. 

Cybercab steals the spotlight

First things first, the Cybercab is a real head-turner. It made its debut in a gold-finished exterior that features a light bar seemingly housing matrix headlights, reminiscent of the Cybertruck. 

And it’s not just the steering that’s missing from this guy, it doesn’t have a pedal or even a rear window. It’s designed to rely entirely on cameras and sensors for a 360-degree view of its surroundings. n fact, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a dramatic entrance on the event stage inside the Cybercab itself.

Inside, passengers are greeted by a lounge-like atmosphere and you’ll have a ample cargo space thanks to a large hatchback trunk.

One of the most interesting features of the Cybercab is the wireless induction charging. With no charging port, it’s the first Tesla vehicle to support this technology. However, the event didn’t shed light on the technical details like the battery size of the Cybercab or how fast it charges. 

Inductive charging is a wireless method of charging electric vehicles (EVs) that uses electromagnetic fields to transfer energy from a charging pad to the battery. 

Musk says, “The robotaxi has no plug. It just goes over the inductive charger and charges. So, yeah, that’s kind of how it should be.”

Tesla Cybercab drives autonomously?

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room — the self-driving technology itself. Tesla has been promising fully autonomous driving capabilities for years, yet current models with the “Full Self-Driving (FSD)” package still require human supervision. This casts a shadow over the Cybercab’s complete lack of driver controls.

Musk assures that the Cybercab utilizes the latest Tesla AI5 computer and relies solely on camera systems. He also reiterated his intention to activate unsupervised Full Self-Driving on current models next year in specific regions. 

But to be honest, this same promise has been made annually for the past five years. Additionally, data suggests Tesla needs a significant improvement in disengagement rates (the frequency a human driver has to take control) before unsupervised driving becomes a reality. So we are not highly optimistic about Musk’s claim yet. 

Tesla Cybercab Price and Availability

However, it sacrifices some performance with a total power output of 110 kW and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.6 seconds (compared to 6.1 seconds for the standard model). Interestingly, both versions share the same WLTP driving range of 513 km.

Whether this version will be available in mainland China remains unclear, as it’s specifically designed to comply with Singapore’s regulations.

So, why the “Drive 110”? Singapore’s car ownership system requires bidding for a Certificate of Ownership (COE) before purchasing a vehicle. There are two COE categories: Class A (up to 110 kW) and Class B (above 110 kW). Class A COEs are significantly cheaper. Taking both the COE cost and car price into consideration, the “Drive 110” with its Class A COE becomes the more affordable option for Singaporean consumers, despite the reduced performance compared to the standard rear-wheel drive version.

BYD, headquartered in Shenzhen and backed by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, took an aggressive stance by slashing the price of its refreshed Yuan Plus SUV to 119,800 yuan, marking an 11.8% reduction compared to its predecessor. This move follows a series of price cuts implemented by BYD over the past weeks, indicating a determined effort to stimulate sales amidst a challenging market landscape.

Meanwhile, Xpeng, based in Guangzhou, extended its 20,000-yuan discount on its popular G6 SUV until the month’s end. The entry-level G6, now priced at 189,900 yuan, witnessed a significant reduction from its earlier tag of 209,900 yuan. This extension comes in response to persisting low deliveries and aims to entice hesitant buyers into the market.

Industry experts predict that most carmakers will resort to offering discounts and engaging in price wars to retain market share in 2024. Despite the slowdown in EV sales growth forecasted by Fitch Ratings, government stimulus measures and favorable policies from manufacturers like Tesla are expected to fuel rapid growth in the car trade-in sector in the coming months.

In January 2024, Tesla recorded just a single EV sale in South Korea. The company sold just a single unit of the Model Y SUV, highlighting growing concerns in Korea relating to EVs manufactured in China. There are also pricing challenges and a lack of charging infrastructure negatively affecting demand in Korea.

Since July 2022, the sale of a single Tesla EV last month in Korea is the worst-ever sales performance by the American company. It is noted that the data put together by researcher Carisyou and the Korean Trade Ministry indicate an 80% decline in the number of new EV registrations in January when compared with December 2023. Higher interest rates and inflation are believed to be among the factors dampening consumer demand for EVs in the country. There are also issues relating to EV fires due to battery overheating, as well as a dearth of fast chargers in Korean cities. The China-made Tesla Model Y was one of the top-selling brands in 2023.

While overall demand for EVs is on a decline in Korea generally, the dip in sales by Tesla could also affected by its perceived links to China. A recent survey indicates that most Koreans who wanted to buy Tesla cars have bought one, but some people recently started disliking Tesla after finding that some of the models were manufactured in China. Korean consumers are concerned about the quality of manufacturing in China, the survey indicated. The low January sales could also be connected to the seasonal behavior of the Korean consumer. January is not the best time to buy EVs as consumers await the government’s announcement of subsidies. A Tesla spokesperson in Korea also stated that consumers delayed EV purchases before the confirmation of subsidies.

The cost of the Model Y was fixed at 56.99 million won ($43,000) in July 2023 and this made it qualify for a full government subsidy. However, a recent announcement by the regulator has further lowered the threshold for government subsidies to EVs priced below 55 million won, which will result in up to a 50% decline in allowable subsidy for the Model Y. It is unclear whether there will be a reaction by Tesla to the new subsidy regime but the company remains upbeat that demand in Korea will pick up.

Now, Elon Musk was set to receive a much much more impressive amount from Tesla, exactly six times larger than the combined pay of the top 200 executives.

Over the past decade, Elon Musk, Tesla’s founder and CEO, has achieved remarkable success. Tesla has not only become synonymous with electric vehicles but has also seen a substantial rise in its market value. In recognition of Musk’s contributions, Tesla’s board awarded him a $56 billion stock option package. To give you an idea of the scale, this amount surpasses the reserves of more than 100 central banks globally as of 2024.

That’s such a significant payment that even your own company needs court approval to grant it to you. However, a Delaware court judge deemed the $56 billion stock option package awarded to Elon Musk by Tesla’s board excessive and ruled that it should be canceled. The court cited concerns that the $56 billion payment rewarded the CEO without considering shareholders’ interests and highlighted that the board didn’t act independently enough in determining Musk’s compensation during the decision making process.

Tesla’s board of directors must craft a new compensation package and may prompt a review of the connection between Tesla shareholders and the CEO. Musk, in response, strongly advocated against incorporating the company in Delaware, stating, “Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware,” implying the potential relocation of Tesla to another state.

Tesla has announced a hardware upgrade for its Model Y lineup in China, equipping the vehicles with the cutting-edge Hardware 4.0 (HW 4.0) self-driving computer. Despite the notable enhancements, the electric automaker has decided to maintain the same pricing for the Model Y, emphasizing its commitment to offering advanced technology without increasing costs for consumers.

The HW 4.0 upgrade brings substantial improvements to the Model Y’s autonomous capabilities. With a maximum detection range of 424 meters, the vehicle gains the ability to see farther distances. The upgraded self-driving computer boasts a remarkable five-fold increase in chip computing power, resulting in enhanced responsiveness and faster processing speeds.

China’s Model Y lineup includes three versions: the base rear-wheel-drive model, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Model Y Long Range, and the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Model Y Performance. Despite the hardware upgrade, Tesla has decided not to alter the pricing for these variants.

Tesla China officially introduced the HW 4.0 upgrade on its Weibo account, emphasizing the improved visibility, clarity in perception, and faster processing speed offered by the advanced autonomous driving hardware.

In addition to the hardware upgrade, Tesla has unveiled a new color option for the upgraded Model Y in China – “Quicksilver.” This color, previously exclusive to Giga Berlin vehicles, is now available due to advanced paint shop technology.

Notably, Tesla had silently implemented Hardware 4.0 in Model S and Model X vehicles in the United States last year, with customers reporting enhanced processing power and improved Tesla Vision technology.

Well, a recent test by InsideEVs now revealed that the Cybertruck’s performance falls noticeably short of Tesla’s advertised range.

The conditions were typical – a 45 degrees Fahrenheit night in Texas, maintaining a speed of 70 mph. The vehicle used was a dual-motor Cybertruck fitted with 20-inch wheels and 35-inch all-terrain tires.

Tesla claims that this model can cover 320 miles on a full charge. However, Conner’s test concluded after just 254 miles – a significant 20.6% less than the advertised range. This result is intriguing, especially when compared to competitors like Rivian, whose R1T model fell short by only 7.4% in a similar test.

Concerns initially arose with the Model Y, which experienced a significant drop in charging speed after adopting the 4680 battery. The recently exposed charging curve of the Cybertruck appears to validate these worries, suggesting that this electric pickup truck may face extended charging times.

Charging speed could be restricted on the software level to gather some specific data for the sake of evaluation

The Cybertruck marks Tesla’s first full utilization of the 4680 batteries, leading to the cessation of 4680 Model Y production at the Texas Gigafactory earlier this year due to reported battery performance issues. Early charging data reveals a prolonged charging time, surpassing Tesla’s official claim of reaching 80% in 25 minutes. The primary challenge stems from a rapid early drop in charging power, extending the actual charging time beyond expectations.

To address skepticism and potential repetition of the Model Y’s issues, Tesla introduced the “Cybercell,” a more advanced version of the 4680 battery. Although claiming a 10% increase in energy density, specific charging performance data has not been provided. Initial charging scenes evoke memories of the Model Y’s suboptimal performance. However, drawing conclusive statements wasn’t previously possible due the the lack of a complete charging curve.

Recently, a Cynertruck was spotted Cybertruck charging at a V3 Supercharger station. It revealed a charging power of 148kW at 35% capacity, which is significantly lower than other Tesla models with similar power levels. The estimated time to charge to 80% stretched to 35 minutes, prompting discussions among Tesla enthusiasts about potential connections to lower-power V2 Superchargers instead of a V3 one. Speculation also arose regarding the Cybertruck’s potential optimization for 800V superchargers, which seemingly justifies the relatively poor performance with a 400V charger. But then again, Tesla uses series-parallel technology to charge batteries at 400V and 800V without an inverter.

Recent insights from a Cybertruck owner shed light on the charging process. The truck takes 40 minutes to reach 80% power, with a sharp decline in charging power from 250kW at 20% to 150kW at 40%, stabilizing around 80kW between 65% and 85%. However, it could be possible that

Compared to the N3E process, N3P aims to deliver a 5% improvement in performance, a 5% to 10% reduction in power consumption, and a remarkable 1.04 times increase in chip density. TSMC has emphasized that N3P’s performance, power, and area (PPA) metrics, along with technology maturity, outpace Intel’s 18A process.

Tesla’s collaboration with TSMC is not new, with the electric vehicle manufacturer having placed multiple orders in the past. Previous ventures include the Dojo D1 chip utilizing the 7nm process and the HW 4.0 chip featuring the 5nm process.
