The SOON Mini has been launched for the global market. This comes just weeks after it was first unveiled by the Chinese firm SOONNOOZ. the device is a mini PC that comes with a detachable speaker. The mini PC’s front panel functions as a standalone Bluetooth speaker. The SOON Mini has an unusual design and comes with original features as its main talking point.

Features

The SOON Mini adopts a rounded chassis with a small physical lever for volume modulation on the top left, while a power button is on the right. Two knobs on the sides of the SOON Mini help to attach a shoulder strap for carrying the mini PC. It is available in black, gray, and white color variants.

The SOON Mini is equipped with the 11th Gen Intel Core i5 processor and an Intel Iris Xe graphics card. It offers up to 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 512GB of NVMe SSD. The SOON Mini comes with Windows 11 Home out of the box. There are two USB 3.1 Type-C ports at the rear with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery compatibility. There is also an HDMI 2.0 port which supports dual-screen 4K display. Two USB 3.0 Type-A ports are also present on the mini PC, Gigabit Ethernet q 3.5mm audio jack.

The new SOONNOOZ mini PC supports Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6 connectivity. It has an integrated 6,000mAh Li-ion battery that offers greater versatility for the mini PC. Three hours of charging of the device translates to up to 8 hours of battery usage. The detachable Bluetooth speaker is another talking point for the SOON Mini. Users can play music directly from the gadget or stream content via a Bluetooth device. The volume of the detachable speaker can be adjusted independently and charges automatically when connected to the body.

XGIMI has released an impressive 3-in-1 projector together with another with its maximum brightness yet in the US. The XGIMI Aladdin is a 3-in-1 projector that is hidden inside a lamp and can also function as a Bluetooth speaker. The Horizon Max, on the other hand, has a maximum brightness of 3,100 ISO lumens and is IMAX Enhanced certified. Both projectors do not support Google TV currently, but Xgimi says this will come on stream later.

The Xgimi Horizon Max is a 4K smart projector with a Dual-Light 2.0 laser and LED hybrid light source. It delivers an impressive maximum brightness of 3,100 lumens but this is yet to be verified independently. Xgimi has been guilty of overstating the maximum brightness of its models in the past. Indeed, the company had even faced a lawsuit about false claims, instituted by Epson. The projector has a contrast ratio of 2000:1, with DTS audio support and improved color accuracy.

The Horizon Max is IMAX Enhanced certified and can play IMAX Enhanced content from streaming platforms. The Horizon Max also features Intelligent Screen Adaptation (ISA) 5.0 for easy placement. The Xgimi Horizon Max has features that remember wall settings for an optimized projection. The ISA architecture can also adapt gaming settings or movie settings as required.

The Xgimi Aladdin projector attaches directly to the light socket on your ceiling. It outputs 1080p images up to 100 inches. You can use the projector’s remote control to directly control the integrated lamp. The Xgimi app can also be used to control the projector but it is not compatible with Matter or other smart home systems. The Aladdin is equipped with Harman Kardon speakers that deliver 360-degree surround sound.

Pricing & Availability

There are no pricing details and exact release dates for the new Xgimi projectors at this time. However, Xgimi says the Horizon Max will be priced below $3,000 and will ship later this year, but the Aladdin optics will be announced later.

Researchers are working on a technology that can deliver transparent wood as a more durable alternative to glass and plexiglass. Transparent wood is reportedly 10 times stronger than glass and 3 times stronger than Plexiglass. The revolutionary technology will mark a watershed in the development of alternatives to the commonly used glass for screens including smartphone screens.

A report from the journal Scientific American outlines the work of Lars Berglund, a Swedish researcher. The article also highlighted the work of a team of researchers at the University of Maryland working on transparent wood.

Glass has evolved over the years to be the default material for displays but the transparent wood alternative display seems to be a very tantalizing alternative. Lars Berglund is affiliated with the KTH Institute of Technology in Sweden and his research points to a promising future for transparent wood in various applications. The process of making wood to be transparent involves modifying or removing lignin from the wood. Lignin is a glue-like substance that holds the cells that transport water and nutrients throughout the tree, giving the tree a brown color.

The researchers bleached or removed the lignin in the wood and then filled it with epoxy resin to make it transparent. Berglum and the UM team’s lead scientist, Liangbing Hu, multimeter-thick sheets of transparent wood offer up to 90% light transmittance. This high transmittance rate however reduces as the thickness of the wood increases up to a centimeter. The researchers also carried out extensive tests to establish the durability and reliability of transparent wood over glass/ Plexiglass.

The researchers are of the view that transparent wood could be a great alternative to utilize in displays instead of glass or plastics. It can also be possibly used as a replacement for glass windows because of its enhanced durability. Such transparent windows can be used to mimic smart windows that can be seen as transparent sometimes and tinted at other times.

There are still concerns about the environmental friendliness of transparent wood since it is produced from a petroleum-derived plastic product epoxy resin. However, the researchers are hopeful of obtaining a sustainable alternative to epoxy resin. When this is achieved, then we may have entered the era of transparent wood displays in our smartphones and other devices.

Lenovo took the wraps off multiple computers at CES 2024. Most of them are updated versions of existing models.

But there are some new ones like ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid, which has a built-in Android tablet. Here in this article, let’s check out IdeaPad Slim 5i, the first-ever IdeaPad laptop with a 15.3-inch 16:10 display.

This notebook also comes in a 15-inch version. Let’s go through its features.

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i Specifications

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i is powered by up to either Intel Core 7 150U or Intel Core i7 13700H processors. It only comes with Intel integrated graphics.

As for memory, the laptop can be availed with up to 32GB LPDDR5x RAM and 1TB PCIe M.2. AS for software, it ships with Microsoft Windows 11.

As mentioned earlier, the notebook comes in two sizes: 15.3-inch and 15-inch. However, the specs remain common. The displays offer a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels (WUXGA), a 60Hz refresh rate, a 16:10 aspect ratio, and 300 nits peak brightness level.

The ports on it include 2 x USB Type-C (USB 3.2 Gen 1), 2 x USB Type-A (USB 3.2 Gen 1), an HDMI 1.4, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also comes with a MicroSD card slot and dual stereo speakers.

Depending on the variant, the laptop arrives with either an FHD webcam or an IR FHD webcam with a ToF sensor for Windows Hello face authentication. All versions feature a privacy shutter and dual microphone array.

The notebook offers up to WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. Last but not least, it draws energy from a 76Whr battery.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i starts at €699 (VAT included). It will be available in select EMEA markets starting February 2024.

The computer will not be sold in North America.

Design & Features

The Xiaomi e-book comes with a design that adopts side-grip physical buttons and an ergonomic uneven back panel. The device is as light as it can get with a weight of 166 grams and can be used for extended periods with any discomfort. The Xiaomi e-paper book has a screen resolution of 300ppi and uses Carta 1200 technology generation ink. This offers an increased response speed and contrast ratio than previous iterations of the Carta technology generation ink. The e-book supports 32 levels of warm and cold dual color temperature automatic dimming, automatic screen rotation, and a balanced refresh mode.

The Xiaomi electronic paper book is powered by a quad-core CPU dedicated to the ink screen and uses low power. It offers 2GB of running memory and 64GB of storage. The e-paper book runs on Android 11 and features built-in Ink Screen adapted apps for a more exciting user experience. In terms of connectivity, the Xiaomi e-book supports dual-band WiFi (2.4GHz/ 5GHz) and Bluetooth 5.2. You can also use the device’s USB port for file transfer.

The new Xiaomi e-paper book is equipped with a 1200mAh battery while its magnetic charging case has a 1950mAh battery. The 7 weeks battery life claimed for the device on standby mode is based on both the battery and its magnetic charging case. This also applies to its 40-hour battery life on standard usage.

Pricing & Availability

The Xiaomi e-paper book is being offered at an introductory price of 1,469 yuan ($205). It remains to be seen what nature of reception awaits the new Xiaomi electronic paper book. For buyers outside of China, Geekwills can ship the Xiaomi E-paper book to most countries worldwide.

The highlight of this series is the Strix Scar 18, the first 18-inch laptop from ROG, equipped with the innovative mini LED ROG Nebula HDR Display. This display boasts over 2000 discrete dimming zones, 1100 nits of peak brightness, and a 2.5K resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate, ensuring vivid and immersive gaming experiences.

All models in the 2024 Strix family are powered by the latest Intel Core i9 processor 14900HX, a 24-core, 32-thread CPU capable of handling demanding tasks and AAA games.

The Strix Scar 16 and Scar 18 come with up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU with a 175 W max TGP, while the Strix G16 and G18 models are equipped with up to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU. CES 2024 is in full swing with a host of product announcements leaping in every now and then. Audiomakers Sennheiser announced new earbuds whereas JBL launched the latest earbuds, headphone collection, and more. JBL also updated its Bluetooth speaker lineup with new offerings. These include the JBL Xtreme 4, Clip 5, and Go 4 with the last two being portable offerings.

JBL Xtreme 4, Clip 5, Go 4 specs and features

The JBL Xtreme 4 is a cylindrical-shaped speaker. Audio-wise, the speaker is equipped with two woofers, two powerful drivers, and dual bass radiators. There is AI Sound Boost that analyzes sound in real-time with AI algorithm for delivering a powerful and crystal-clear sound. The speaker is backed by a replaceable battery that is claimed to offer 24 hours of usage. There is a power bank feature for charging smartphones.

The JBL Clip 5 features a slightly wider carabiner that allows users to clip on to more items. JBL says that this speaker packs 40 percent increase in driver power and an updated sound system delivering 15 percent louder and 10 percent more bass compared to the previous model. The speaker is said to deliver a battery life of 12 hours.

Meanwhile, the JBL Go 4 has received its fourth iteration. It is the smallest speaker in the brand’s portfolio. The audio maker says that the latest offering packs more robust sound and punchier bass than its predecessor. The Go 4 is rated to 7 hours of battery life on a single charge.

The JBL Xtreme 4, Clip 5, and Go 4 are IP67-certified dust and water-resistant. The trio supports Bluetooth 5.3 with LE audio. The brand has also introduced Auracast on all speakers which allows the ability to connect the speakers to multiple audio devices.

Lenovo announced a bunch of laptops at CES 2024. They fall under almost all the categories of notebooks sold by the company.

One of them is the Yoga Slim 7i. This computer is different from the Yoga Slim 7i Carbon that we reviewed about a year ago.

The newer model is a thin and light Intel Evo-certified laptop with H series processors. Whereas, the older Carbon edition is more about portability as it weighs under a kilogram and houses Intel P series processors.

Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Specifications

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i features a 14-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels (WUXGA), a 60Hz refresh rate, and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The panel supports Dolby Vision and covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

In North America and Asia Pacific, the screen has a glass protection and support touch input. Whereas, the rest of the world gets a non-touch display with a matte finish. Anyways, all regions get a 180° hinge.

The notebook is powered by up to Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor paired with Intel Arc GPU. It comes with up to 32GB LPDDR5x RAM and 1 TB PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD. On the software front, it boots Microsoft Windows 11.

The computer arrives with 2 x USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 4), 1 x USB Type-A (USB 3.2), an HDMI 2.1, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It houses quad speakers with support for Dolby Atmos and four microphones.

The wireless connectivity options on it include WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. It has an FHD IR webcam with support for Windows Hello face authentication and a shutter. Last but not least, the device is backed by a 65Whr battery.

At the ongoing CES 2024, HP announced a host of devices including new laptops, gaming accessories, and monitors. Out of these, the Omen Transcend 16 steals the thunder. It bags the title of the world’s lightest 14-inch gaming laptop while also packing top-notch hardware. The brand has also announced a 16-inch Omen Transcend. Read on to learn all the details about the machine.

HP Omen Transcend 14 specifications

The HP Omen Transcend 14 has a very slim profile. It features a HyperX RGB keyboard. The laptop boasts an IMAX Enhanced certified 14-inch OLED screen surrounded by all bezels. The display bears a 2.8K resolution, a 120Hz variable refresh rate, 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, 500 nits peak brightness, and HDR support. The machine weighs just 1.6 kgs.

Under the hood, the HP Omen Transcend 14 houses up to Intel Core Ultra 9 processor. It is coupled with up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPU onboard. The machine packs up to 32GB RAM and 2TB storage. HP says that there is an advanced thermal system co-engineered with Intel for heat dissipation. The laptop draws its power from a 71WHr battery unit with support for 140W charging. It is claimed to last up to 11.5 hours.

Connectivity options on the HP Omen Transcend 14 include WiFi-7, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-A port, USB-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The HP Omen Transcend 14 comes in Shadow Black and Ceramic White colors. It carries a starting price tag of $1,499 and will be available for pre-orders from January 8. Meanwhile, the Omen Transcend 16 with a 16-inch 2.5K 240Hz display will start at $1,900.
