Design

Asus and Samsung put much effort into creating innovative designs this year, especially with these two devices. Both Asus Zenfone 6 and Samsung Galaxy A80 come with rotating camera modules in order to guarantee a notch-less display and let people use the rear cameras as front camera. This also results in very narrow bezels around the display, with the Samsung Galaxy A80 boasting the highest screen-to-body ratio. Both the phones have a glass back and an aluminum frame, but unlike the Zenfone 6, the Samsung Galaxy A80 has an in-display fingerprint scanner instead of a rear-mounted one. I even like more the rotating mechanism of the Galaxy A80, if we only talk about the aesthetics.

Display

The best display panel is undoubtedly the one found on the Realme X2 Pro. It is the only to support the HDR10+ standard for richer image quality, especially with multimedia content. Further, it has a 100 percent DCI P3 coverage and even a higher 90 Hz refresh rate that is very great for gamers. Despite being an IPS panel, the display found on the Zenfone 6 is still a high-end screen with a Full DCI P3 coverage and HDR10 support. And even though the Samsung Galaxy A80 has an AMOLED display, the Zenfone 6 looks more interesting. However, as said above, it lacks an in-display fingerprint reader.

Hardware/Software

The most performing smartphone of the trio is the Realme X2 Pro as it is one of the most powerful flagships out there sold at a midrange-class price. It is even equipped with up to 12 GB of RAM and a UFS 3.0 internal storage, that is simply amazing. The second place goes to the Asus Zenfone 6 fueled by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and up to 8 GB of RAM, while the Samsung Galaxy A80 is just an upper mid-ranger with its Snapdragon 730 processor, but it is still very fast and smooth.

Camera

The cameras found on the Asus Zenfone 6 are the most interesting not only because of the photo quality but also because of its flip-up mechanism allowing you to take photos from unusual angles. Further, the rear camera can also be used as a front camera. The Realme X2 Pro deserves a second place with its 64 MP quad camera which is more versatile for various kinds of scenarios, while the Samsung Galaxy A80 is not so exciting despite its rotating camera mechanism.

Battery

The presence of a huge 5000 mAh battery makes the Asus Zenfone 6 last a lot more than its rivals on a single charge, despite the IPS display. It even supports reverse charging so that it can be used as a power bank.

Price

You need just €399/$444 to grab a unit of the Realme X2 Pro in the base configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. Asus Zenfone 6’s listing price starts from €499/$556, while Samsung Galaxy A80 actually costs about €450/$500. If you do not care so much about cameras and battery life (in that case Asus Zenfone 6 is a more correct choice), Realme X2 Pro wins this comparison due to its better display and performance, but it lacks an innovative design and high-end cameras.

ASUS Zenfone 6 gets Android 10 stable update

When ASUS took the wraps off the Zenfone 6, they promised the phone will get updated to Android Q and Android R. Android Q actually launched as Android 10 but ASUS’s promise didn’t change as the Zenfone 6 is now the latest flagship phone to get Android 10.

The update is just a little over 800MB and brings all the goodness of Android 10 from new gestures to new ways to customize your notification, and of course, dark mode. The changelog also mentions Support for Google Play System Update which is the new way certain updates will be delivered (via the Play Store).

ASUS ZenFone 6

The update is rolling out in the US as well as in India where the phone is known as the ASUS 6z.

With the Zenfone 6 out of the way, we hope the ROG Phone II will be next. The original ROG Phone is still stuck on Android Oreo, however, an update to Android Pie was confirmed recently following speculations that ASUS wouldn’t be updating the phone anymore. The Zenfone 5Z began receiving a beta version of Android 10 last month, so a stable update should arrive soon.

Zenfone 6 updates

With Android 10 rolling out to the Zenfone 6 already, folks will definitely have more faith in ASUS. The phone is still a recommended device to purchase if you are looking for an affordable flagship. It has a notch-free screen, a large battery capacity, and dual-rear cameras that flip forward to double as the selfie cameras. It also keeps the audio jack and its new ZenUI is a near-stock version of Android with some useful customizations.

MIUI to get Focus Mode, now available on developer ROM

Following Google’s announcement of Digital Wellbeing last year, manufacturers have been coming up with their own way of getting people to take a break from their phones for a period of time. Earlier this year, OnePlus announced Zen Mode for its phones, a feature that locks you out of most phone functions for a period of 20 minutes or more. Now, Xiaomi has announced that MIUI will be getting a similar feature called Focus Mode.

The announcement was made on Weibo today by the head of MIUI. He revealed that the feature is now available on the developer version and can be accessed by going to Screen Time Management under Settings.

[envira-gallery id=”287538″]

MIUI’s Focus Mode will allow you to choose from five different time settings. You will be able to set the duration to 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes. During this period, your phone will be unusable. It should remain that way even if you restart the device.

It is too early to say when Focus Mode will be available for stable users. We also do not know if all Xiaomi phones will get it but we have a feeling all devices updated to MIUI 11 will get the feature.

Google has made it mandatory for all devices sold after September 3 running Android Pie or Android 10 with Google Apps and Google Services pre-installed to come with a digital wellbeing solution with parental controls.

Manufacturers are required to either integrate Google’s Digital Wellbeing app or develop their own custom app that complies with certain requirements. This rule is also applicable to devices that get updated to Android 9 Pie or Android 10 after the aforementioned date. This explains why so many software updates we have seen from manufacturers in recent weeks have Digital Wellbeing included.

UPDATE: Despite official launch, getting the Mate 30 Pro in Malaysia is not a straightforward process

UPDATE: Mudah.my has come forward, removing all ad listings for the Huawei Mate 30 series on their website. On top of this, they are taking steps to improve the safety features on-board to improve the buying and selling experience. This will hopefully reduce the chances of consumers being scammed in the future.

The Huawei Mate 30 series has endured a torrid release. While Huawei unveiled the Mate 30 line in September at an event in Munich, it initially released the devices exclusively within China. Then, Huawei announced that it would sell both devices in Malaysia, which seemed like a big step forward for the company, but it’s not as straightforward as it seems.

Firstly, the Chinese company is only offering 4G variants of its handsets, there is no 5G option available. That’s not really much of a problem in Malaysia where 5G is barely present. You also cannot choose which SKU you would like either, with the registration form only giving the option of your preference between Black and Space Silver. The real problem comes in when you actually try to purchase the device.

The Huawei Mate 30 Referral Program

In a statement by Bill Liu, Country Director of Huawei Malaysia, customers can pre-order any Mate 30 series smartphone with a referral code from an owner of the Mate 30 Pro (from the Exclusive Ownership Program). According to Liu, this is part of Huawei’s plan for consumers to “connect with owners to understand the device”.

This may seem fine and dandy, but this process comes with several caveats that complicate matters. For starters, to actually get a referral code you need to have owned at least two Huawei Mate devices before this. Doing this doesn’t just give you the ability to pre-order the device, but it also grants you your own referral code that you can share with others.

Now, these hurdles are in place largely because the Mate 30 series is Huawei’s first flagship device to come with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS)—the alternative to Google Mobile Services. That’s received its fair share of skepticism, so Huawei’s initial ownership program was targeted towards users who have owned two Huawei Mate devices in the past.

Thankfully, there’s incentive to go through the hassle. Customers who successfully pre-order the Mate 30 series under the referral program will be entitled to a Huawei SuperCharge Wireless Car Charger, Huawei PU Back Casing, and Huawei Care (1 year Extended warranty + 6 Month Screen Crack Protection). For those who successfully gain 5 pre-order referrals, they will get a free Huawei Watch GT.

There have been several Malaysian users who have managed to pre-order and even collect their own Huawei Mate 30s and Mate 30 Pros. According to them, the reception to the new referral program hasn’t been great, and the turnout is quite small. It seems like the Huawei Mate 30 Pro isn’t doing too hot in Malaysia, and it doesn’t help that Huawei Malaysia haven’t flaunted any sales numbers like they usually do.

This was to be expected though, the device is still a hard sell, even without all the complicated procedures in place. The lack of Google services is bad any user, though Huawei Malaysia is surprisingly hush on the matter. Many consumers are still oblivious as to whether Google apps are on the Mate 30 line or not. Huawei however have diverted focus over to different topics, choosing to heavily push the device’s camera capabilities instead.

Fake Huawei Mate 30 units abound

The limited availability has also led to another entirely different issue. Because Huawei is heavily marketing the Mate 30 Pro (billboard ads, fullpage newspaper ads) but actual units are hard to get, lots of fakes are going on sale in Malaysia via e-commerce sites like Lazada and Mudah.my.

These devices are priced way too low to be legitimate, but they manage to fool gullible consumers who don’t know any better. This problem is doubled due to Lazada and especially Mudah.my’s hands off approach to return policies, where sellers can set their own policies depending on how they see fit. I don’t need to explain how this can results in a cavalcade of potential problems.

Retail units are already available?

Thankfully it appears there’s a bit of a silver lining, though it does complicate the pre-order situation. It now appears that you might not need a special code to get the Mate 30 Pro at all. Malaysian smartphone retailer Mobile2Go currently has stocks available which you can buy right away. On top of that, they are throwing additional freebies for the flagship quad-camera device.

According to the retailer, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro on sale is the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant which retails for RM3,899. If you purchase it from them, they are giving away a case, a wireless charger, 10,000mAh power bank, a 10L backpack and a 3-in-1 premium gift box. The confusing part is that you need to contact them directly to secure a unit, but it’s otherwise completely legitimate.

While Mobile2Go were the first retailers to obtain legitimate local units of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, other big retailers like DirectD and InfoTech have also begun to receive ready stock. Pricing remains the same, with the Mate 30 going for RM2799 and the Mate 30 Pro retailing for RM3899. These don’t come with as many goodies, but they’re safer options than the random online seller and much more convenient than Huawei’s referrals.

We really hope Huawei does away with the cumbersome referral system and will simply allow consumers to purchase the Mate 30 line. If they’re worried about the reception the device will receive because it’s lacking Google services, then they need to be more transparent about it. As it stands, it seems like they’re deliberately hiding it from consumers, and it’s not a good look.

Xiaomi’s Mi Watch price leaks via official store listing ahead of launch

Xiaomi is expected to go ballistic once again with its product launch as it releases the Mi CC9 ProMi TV 5 and it’s first WearOS-powered smartwatch dubbed Mi Watch. Ahead of the launch event, the price of the Mi Watch has appeared on the website of Xiaomi’s official store on Taobao. Although we couldn’t find the link to the store, the screenshot shared by ITHomes shows the smartwatch will likely retail for 1499 yuan ($213) for 11.11 while the price is 1699 yuan ($241). XIaomi Mi Watch

The price looks expensive but then, considering the topnotch features that are expected on board, it is reasonable. Besides, the design of the Mi Watch is heavily inspired by the immensely popular Apple Watch which costs twice as much.

In terms of the specs, the Mi Watch comes with a premium build and sturdy hardware. It features a curved sapphire glass which protects the square-shaped touchscreen display and sports a side-mounted crown which can be used to navigate through the UI. It is powered by the Snapdragon 3100 chipset and Adreno 304 GPU. The Mi Watch will support NFC, Bluetooth 4.2 and low power 802.11n Wi-Fi and GPS. You also get e-SIM support in addition to the regulars like a built-in fitness tracker/activity tracker which can be used to track things like sleep, calories burned, different sports activity modes and the number of steps taken. For more details, read our detailed pre-launch post on the Mi Watch from here.Mi watch

Even though the Mi Watch will be launched tomorrow, the listing shows the smartwatch will be going on sale on November 11 during the 11.11 shopping festival.

OnePlus rumored to be working on a fitness band

Like many other prominent electronics manufacturers, OnePlus has slowly diversified its portfolio. Aside from their staple smartphones, the Chinese tech giant now manufactures wireless headphones and more recently smart TVs. The company is reportedly planning to add a fitness band to their collection next. However, this is not the first time that rumors of OnePlus working on a wearable device has been doing the rounds of the internet. Back in 2016, the company conceived the idea but shelved it indefinitely soon after as the primary goal was manufacturing smartphones. OnePlus considers 2020 the ideal time to revive the project.

OnePlus fitness band

OnePlus may launch its first wearable device alongside the OnePlus 8, which might release in the second quarter of 2020. Not much is known about the device at the moment. While the source claims that it could be a fitness band, but some reports suggest that there could be a smartwatch.

OnePlus Watch Sketch

According to the old sketches from 2016, the device is likely to sport a round dial with customizable straps. It could run on the Android WearOS platform. Although it is difficult to speculate on the features, OnePlus is unlikely to bring anything new to the table. Xiaomi has carved a niche out for itself with its range of affordable wearable solutions. There is no reason OnePlus would not want to replicate Xiaomi’s success.

OnePlus is among the leading smartphone manufacturers in emerging markets including India. Back in 2016, the strategy was to focus on establishing the brand, and OnePlus has done quite well for itself. The company can finally focus on creating an ecosystem around its existing range of products, a strategy that Apple has mastered over the years. There is a dearth of affordable options in the wearable Android market, and OnePlus should do pretty well considering its excellent track record in the affordable premium smartphone category.

It has been over three years since the sketches became public. It is entirely possible that OnePlus has designed an entirely new product for 2020. The upcoming device might also run on an Android-based platform, like a wearable version of OxygenOS. After all, Google’s WearOS is not the best in class, and no one would blame OnePlus for offering its own software on its wearable device.

Nokia 800 Tough is coming to India soon

The Nokia 800 Tough is one of three non-smartphones that HMD Global announced at its IFA launch event in September. The other two are the Nokia 2720 Flip and the Nokia 110. The Nokia 800 Tough went on sale last month in Europe for €119/£109.99. New info reveals the phone will now be making its way to India.

Indian retailer, Sangeetha Mobiles, has revealed the Nokia 800 Tough is coming soon which means you will be able to purchase the rugged phone on their online store very soon.

Nokia 800 Tough India

There is no specific date yet but it most likely will be not too far off. When its European price is converted to INR, it gives you about INR 9390, which is pretty expensive for a feature phone. However, you will be hard-pressed to find a smartphone at that price range with some of the features of the KaiOS-powered Nokia 800 Tough.

The device has MIL-STD-810G compliance and will survive drops from a height up to 1.8 meters tall. It will even survive a fall on concrete. The Nokia 800 Tough also has an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating and will work under extreme temperatures. It also has a 198 lumens flashlight at the top.

The Nokia 800 Tough packs a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, is powered by a Snapdragon 205 processor and has 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. There is a 2MP camera with flash on the rear and you get a hybrid dual SIM tray. Its 2100mAh battery will last more than 40 days on standby and more than 9 hours of talk time on 4G. There is also GPS, Bluetooth 4.1, and WiFi.

Xiaomi Watch Pro with a circular dial is coming too

The Xiaomi Watch will launch tomorrow alongside the Mi CC9 Pro ad the Mi TV 5 series. Save for the price of the watch, there is little else we don’t already know about the smartwatch whose design borrows several leaves from the Apple Watch. If you, like me, do not like the Xiaomi Watch’s design, then there is good news.

Serial leaker and blogger @Digital Chat Station has revealed that there will be a Xiaomi Watch Pro with a circular dial. However, you will have to wait as it is not to arrive until a couple of months after the launch of the standard model.

Amazfit Sports Watch Elite Edition
Will the Xiaomi Watch Pro look like this?

This is surely exciting news for everyone irrespective of whether you like the design of the standard version or not. The Xiaomi Watch Pro will definitely bring more than just a different design. It may come with a more powerful processor, probably the yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon Wear 3300 which explains why it won’t launch tomorrow.

Xiaomi Watch Pro

We can also expect more RAM and larger onboard storage. It will, of course, run MIUI for Watch just like the standard version, have an eSIM, NFC, and maybe a bigger battery capacity with support for wireless charging, a feature the standard version seems to be missing.

Digital Chat Station does mention in his post that the Xiaomi Watch will cost ¥1299 (~$185), so the Xiaomi Watch Pro should cross the $200 mark.

We have no reason to doubt the source seeing as his leak about the Xiaomi Watch turned out to be correct weeks before we heard anything about the device.

To begin with, the design of the Mi Watch is heavily inspired by the immensely popular Apple Watch. It features a curved sapphire glass which protects the square-shaped touchscreen display and sports a side-mounted crown which can be used to navigate through the UI.

The body/housing of the Mi Watch is made out of polished stainless steel which gives it a premium overall look. Apart from the crown, its right side features a microphone pinhole and a rectangular-shaped multi-purpose button. In comparison, the left side fo the smartwatch harbours the loudspeaker vent and a secondary microphone pinhole.

The rear of the smart wearable seems to be made out of plastic and it makes room for the charging dock and what seems like an HRM (heart rate monitor).

Moving ahead, the Xiaomi Mi Watch will come with a high-quality fluoro rubber strap which can easily be swapped accrediting to its quick-release mechanism. It has already been confirmed that these rubber straps will be offered in four colour options which include Blue, White, Grey, and Black.

Chipset, Battery and Connectivity Options

Under the hood, the Mi Watch will be kitted with the Snapdragon 3100 chipset revealed a previously shared official teaser. The chipset consists of a 4x ARM Cortex A7, 32 bit Quad-core CPU which is clocked at 1.2 GHz and Adreno 304 GPU.

While Xiaomi is yet to reveal the exact battery capacity of the upcoming smartwatch, it is said to have “pretty large” battery.

The company had already confirmed the Mi Watch will support NFC, the chipset’s spec sheet reveals it is equipped with Bluetooth 4.2 and low power 802.11n Wi-Fi and GPS which are presumed to make their way on the upcoming wearable.

Key Features

Now that we have discussed the design and hardware aspects of Xiaomi’s upcoming wearable, let’s see what kind of features it will bring to the table.

It will be able to display notifications from user’s smartphones which include text messages, emails, calendar alerts and app alerts. The smartwatch is also expected to support alarm clock functionality.

mi smartwatch apps liteXiaomi has already confirmed that the Mi Watch with built-in NFC will be capable of supporting AliPay. Likewise, in other countries, this might support Google Pay which is a globally accepted mode of digital payment.

It is also reported to support WeChat and we are excited to see how will its text input function work. Whether it will have an onscreen keyboard, will accept voice to text translation or both, is yet to be confirmed.

Xiaomi has also confirmed that the Mi Watch can store & play music independently which sounds like a praiseworthy feature. Therefore, users can leave their smartphone behind when going for a hike or while working out in a gym.

The smartwatch will supposedly be compatible with both Android OS and iOS, similar to what has been observed with Xiaomi’s previously launched wearables including the Mi Band 4. The device will run on a forked version of MIUI and it will also be capable of remotely controlling smart home appliances like Air Purifier, smart bulb or IoT devices.

Similar to the Apple Watch, it will also support e-sim which will allow it to make and receive phone calls and have access to the internet. Oukitel Y1000

According to the company, it retains the IP68 certification that makes it waterproof, dust-proof, and drop-resistance. At the same time, it sports a trendy design and a super-thin unibody craft that is a combination of TPU and PC+GF materials. The Mi CC9 Pro will also have multi-function NFC which can replace all money and travel cards that make use of this technology. The upcoming smartphone is already confirmed to be offered in Green and White colour options. However, the company is also expected to offer the Mi CC9 Pro in other colour variants which include Black, Red and Blue.

All in all, the upcoming Mi CC9 Pro seems like a worthy mid-range smartphone that can disrupt the segment if Xiaomi manages to price it aggressively. We assume the device can be priced somewhere between Yuan 2299 ($ 327) and Yuan 3000 ($ 427) in China. However, as observed with the standard Mi CC9, its price will be bumped up considerably higher when it launches in Europe.
