Vivo To Showcase A New UnderDisplay Fingerprint SmartPhone On January 10

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is about to kick-off and we are expecting some major announcements in terms of new technology. In line with that, Vivo has officially announced that it will be showcasing a phone with a new fingerprint sensor technology at the event on 10th January.

Going by the teaser image released by the China-based smartphone manufacturer, it is clear that the company is planning to showcase a phone with under display fingerprint sensor technology.

Vivo Fingerprint Technology Showcase CES

With full-screen displays going mainstream, the demand for the fingerprint sensors embedded under display has intensified. For devices will full-screen display, the under display fingerprint sensor is believed to be the most convenient way to unlock devices, instead of a standalone sensor placed on the back side of the phone, or embedded on the home button.

Recently, Synaptics launched Clear ID FS9500 optical in-display fingerprint scanner for smartphones, marking a milestone in fingerprint sensor technology. The sensor can be used with wet, dry and cold fingerprints. It remains well-protected under the durable glass of the screen and is a water-resistant as well as scratch-resistant.

The Clear ID comes equipped with security features such as adaptive fingerprint template matching and verification as well as anti-spoofing technology. It is also integrated with ECC authentication and AES encryption. Synaptics has claimed that as many as 70 million units of these sensors will be available in the market in 2018.

Synaptics revealed that it is ready to mass produce optical in-display fingerprint sensors and announced that it is producing the same for a “top-five” smartphone vendor. While the company didn’t announce the name of the smartphone manufacturer it has tied-up with, some reports suggested that the company could be Vivo.

Vivo recently announced that it will be the first company to launch a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the display in 2018. It revealed that the phone will come with Synaptic’s Clear ID but the name of the phone was not revealed.

HTC U11 Android Oreo Update in Europe Delayed, Company Apologizes

HTC U11 has started receiving the stable update to Android Oreo from mid November. The updated started from Taiwan, the home country of the company, then it came to the U.S, but even after almost two months, the flagship has not been updated in Europe. The company is aware of the problem and it has published a post on Twitter in which it apologizes for the delay. According to the post, the company has started to release the update globally but due to some complexities, the stable update could not be released in Europe.

HTC-U11

A similar thing happened a few days ago with the OnePlus 5, for which the company suspended the global roll out due to some bugs. HTC did not give any info about the issues encountered with the European update to Android Oreo on HTC U11. The issues may be related to European network carriers given that the problem is only in one region, but these are only speculations. HTC has asked U11 owners to have a bit of patience: the company will let us know more about the update as soon as it can.

The tweet comes from HTC UK and we think it should not take much time for the company to fix the issues. In the U.S. the update has been big, with a size of 1.28 GB, and it brought many changes and improvements. Together with the main features of Android 8.0 Oreo, there were some optimizations to system performances and also the security patch released by Google in the month of November. Obviously, the update of the HTC U11 comes with a new version of the user interface by the company: Sense UI.

When do you think the update to Android Oreo will start hitting the European units?

nokia 3310 4g lte

Samsung Galaxy S9 And S9 Plus RAM and Storage Variants Leak

Samsung is gearing up to launch its flagship phones for the year — Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. According to the reports, the device will be announced at Mobile World Congress in February and will go on sale in March.

The Galaxy S9 series has been a subject of several leaks, giving information about its design and specifications. Now, another leak related to the devices provides information about various variants of the Galaxy S9 as well as Galaxy S9 Plus based on the memory configuration.

Samsung Galaxy S9+

According to the leak, the Samsung Galaxy S9 will pack 4GB RAM and will be available in two variants based on the internal storage — 64GB and 128GB. On the other hand, the Galaxy S9 Plus will come with 6GB RAM and will have four storage variants — 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. However, the 512GB internal storage variant is expected to be available in select regions only that too in limited quantity.

Both the smartphones will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor in the US and China. In other markets, the devices will be powered by the recently announced company’s own Exynos 9810 chipset which comes with improved CPU, GPU performance, artificial intelligence (AI), and deep learning.

As per the previous leaks, the Galaxy S9 and the S9 Plus are expected to retain the same display sizes as that of their predecessors — 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch, respectively. The Galaxy S9 is rumored to sport a single rear-facing camera, while the S9 Plus will feature a dual rear-facing camera setup.

The display will be curved, with almost absent bezels on the sides and very narrow bezels on the top and bottom.

Nokia 6 (2018) Gets Android Oreo & Support for Google Play

The Nokia 6 (2018) is the first of the Nokia Android smartphones for 2018 just like its predecessor last year. Announced on Friday, January 5, the new phone comes with Android Nougat out of the box instead of Oreo.

Nokia 6 (2018)

New reports say that after booting up the Nokia 6 (2018) for the first time, you get hit with an update. This update, thankfully, brings Android Oreo and all its goodness.

You may be wondering why they didn’t just ship it with it. The only possible explanation is that it wasn’t ready yet before units were shipped to major distributors and resellers.

That is not the only news about the new smartphone. Since this is the Chinese variant, it is not far fetched to think that Google services are not installed. The phone still doesn’t come with Google services but it has optional support to install it saving you the stress of trying to unlock the bootloader to do so. All you have to do is download the Google Play store APK file and install it on your device.

The first-gen Nokia 6 didn’t have the above feature when it launched but got it in July with the month’s security patch update. The advantage this brings is for those living outside China who plan to order a unit ahead of its global release.

Hisense P9 Rugged Phone With 6000mAh Battery, AMOLED Display & Dual Rear Cameras Seen On TENAA

For those who do not fancy the new 18:9 display trend, you may want to look out for the Hisense P9. Unlike its yet-to-be-announced sibling which comes with an 18:9 display and a shiny body, the P9 is a rugged smartphone. It also packs some really powerful specs according to its TENAA listing.

Hisense P9 featured

The Hisense P9 like most other rugged phones, has an octagonal shape with a steel frame and visible screws on the sides. This design in addition to the rubberized edges helps the phone survive drops and absorb shocks. The phone has its volume rocker and power button on the left and an orange button on the right which we presume is a dedicated camera button.

The display of the P9 is a 5.5” AMOLED screen with a 1080p resolution. It is powered by a 1.95GHz octa-core processor and comes with 6GB of RAM. Hisense will offer the phone in 64GB and 128GB variants. There is also support for storage expansion (128GB max).

Just because it is a rugged phone doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to have some fun with it. The Hisense P9 comes with dual 12MP rear cameras and a 16MP front facing camera.

If you are going to put those cameras to good use, you’ll definitely need a strong battery too. The Hisense P9 covers that by packing a massive 6000mAh battery. It also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The only let down is that the phone runs Android 7.1.2 Nougat but that isn’t so bad as there are lots of phones in the market still running Nougat.

Energizer Power Max P600S Black

Since this new phone belongs to its Power Max series, the battery is one of its selling points. Under the carbon fiber back is a 4500mAh battery with support for fast charge via USB-C. That big battery does affect the thickness of the phone which comes in at 9.8mm.

Essential Phone Gets New update: No Oreo, But Brings January Security Patch & Spectre and Meltdown Fixes

Essential is pushing out a new update but sadly it is not the stable update for Android 8.0 Oreo. We know most people are expecting that update but this new one is pretty important too.

Essential Phone

The new update (build NMJ88C) not only brings January’s security patch but also fixes the latest security flaws – Spectre and Meltdown. If you have been following the news lately, you must have come across those two words.

Both are the names of two security flaws found within computer processors which affect nearly all devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. It is also said to affect cloud computing systems.

Meltdown can grant an attacker access to read kernel memory and affects processors made by Intel and Qualcomm and a certain type of ARM chip.

Spectre on the other hand may grant attackers access to private data by tricking error-free applications into giving it up. It is harder to exploit but also harder to fix. It affects processors from Qualcomm, Intel, ARM, and AMD.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Fan-Made Renders Suggest What The Future Holds

Samsung is yet to say anything about the Galaxy Note 9 but a popular tipster Benjamin Geskin has shared some insight on Twitter on the Galaxy Note 10 which ordinarily should succeed the Galaxy Note 9. The tipster shared some renders of the flagship smartphone and also dropped the hint that the device will be launched in 2020. The reason for this is unknown as the Note 9 is expected this year and then ordinarily, the Galaxy Note 10 should drop in 2019.Samsung Galaxy Note 10

The renders could at best be described as futuristic as it shows a device that is almost completely bezel-less and could be referred to as a truly bezel-less smartphone. It comes with a full-screen design that looks very much like the iPhone X, bearing a slight notch at the top which houses the front speaker. Apart from that, there is no bezel on any other portion, which distinguishes the Galaxy Note 10 renders from the iPhone X.Galaxy Note 10

Read Also: Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Reportedly Arriving with Under-Display Fingerprint Scanner

At the rear, the renders show a dual camera setup aligned in the vertical direction, similar to what is expected to be utilized on the Galaxy S9 and S9+. The only difference is that there is no fingerprint sensor at the back. Instead, the Galaxy Note 10 renders suggest that the device will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. That looks very much feasible as the technology is expected to gain ground this year with Qualcomm and Synaptics already gearing up for what may be a stiff rivalry. The under-display fingerprint recognition technology is even rumored to feature on the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung was recently reported to have patented its own under display fingerprint technology. However, these renders are not to be taken seriouly as they are most likely based on speculations. We are yet to get too many details about the Galaxy Note 9, not to talk of the Galaxy Note 10 which should launch in 2019 at the earliest.

Sony Rumored To Unveil Xperia XZ1 Premium, XZ1 Plus And XZ1s At MWC 2018

While Sony is expected to launch its new devices later this month at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, it seems that the company will not launch its premium devices there. It appears that the company could launch its mid-range and entry-level phones at CES — Xperia XA2, XZ2 Ultra and L2.

However, the latest report suggests that the company will launch its premium phones, which includes Xperia XZ1 Premium, XZ1 Plus and XZ1S, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 that will happen next month in Barcelona.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Premium, XZ1 Plus, XZ1s

According to the leaked information, the Xperia XZ1 Premium is the most premium model of the trio. It is said to feature a 5.46-inch HDR LCD display screen with 2160 x 3840 pixels screen resolution, similar to its predecessor. It will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, coupled with 6GB RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage.

There will be 12-megapixel dual camera lenses while on the front, it will have a 13-megapixel selfie snapper. We are expecting the fingerprint scanner to be placed on the back panel, similar to what we saw of Sony’s upcoming budget XA2 series.

It is said that the Xperia XZ1 Plus and Xperia XZ1s will also feature rear fingerprint scanners along with the dual 12-megapixel cameras on the back and a 13-megapixel camera on the front. However, the XZ1s will have a 5.2-inch Full HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution and is said to be powered by Snapdragon 835 processor.

On the other hand, the XZ1 Plus is expected to flaunt a 5.5-inch Full HD display and will be powered by the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. Both phones, Xperia XZ1 Plus and XZ1s, are expected to come with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage space.

GFXBench Reveals TCL 5099 Will Have 5” FHD+ Screen

TCL-owned Alcatel has a bunch of smartphones lined up for this year. Some of them like the Alcatel 5 and Alcatel 3C have been in the news recently. Today, another one benchmarked as the TCL 5099 but said to be the Alcatel A3A XL has appeared on GFXBench revealing a large part of its specification details.

TCL 5099 GFXBench

The TCL 5099 is listed as sporting a 5” display with a 2160 x 1080 resolution that translates into an 18:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by MediaTek’s MT6735 SoC clocked at 1.4GHz with a Mali-T720 as the GPU.

There is 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, though only 10GB or 11GB will be available for use. Be rest assured that a microSD card slot will be available for storage expansion.

For optics, the phone has a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front facing camera. It runs Android Oreo and even has NFC.

There are reports that this is the Alcatel A3A XL, a successor to last year’s A3 XL. There is a likelihood this is incorrect since it has a 5” display which is significantly smaller than the A3 XL’s 6” screen. Plus it makes no sense to give a phone with a 5” screen a “XL” suffix.

Left to us, we believe this is the Alcatel A3A which will succeed last year’s A3 model. The Alcatel A3 launched with a 5” display, so it makes more sense that the A3A will retain the small screen size albeit with a higher resolution and new aspect ratio. There is also a chance that GFXBench is wrong with the display size and this is indeed the Alcatel A3A XL.

Alcatel A3A XL Wi-Fi Alliance

A few weeks ago, an Alcatel phone with model number 5099D was seen at the FCC and also on the Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth certification sites.

Alcatel 5099 series

Wi-Fi Alliance does confirm that the 5099D is indeed the Alcatel A3A XL. The Bluetooth certification site also lists several other models differing only in the alphabet ending the model number. However all five models are said to have 6” displays with Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi, 2G, 3G, and LTE.

[Updated] Doogee V: iPhone X and Galaxy S9 Mashup With In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

UPDATE: More Specs, New Photo, Release Date & Pricing

Last year was the year of full-screen displays and we expect the design to continue this year. However, the major trend for 2018 will be under-display fingerprint scanners. The Doogee V is the first phone to give us an early look at a design that combines these two features.

Details of the Doogee V were first posted on Twitter by Benjamin Geskin (@VenyaGeskin1). The tweet includes a picture, some specs, in addition to a time frame for launch and possible price range.

Evan Blass (@evleaks) also took to Twitter this morning to show us a render of the Doogee V. There are a few differences between the two designs shared by both leakers but they both have a nearly identical front.

Doogee V
Doogee V posted by VenyaGeskin

Doogee V
Doogee V posted by evleaks

The first thing you notice about the phone is its display. It is 6.2-inches in size with a notch at the top just like the iPhone X. The notch is home to a sensor, earpiece, and front camera. In the image posted by @VenyaGeskin1, there is an additional camera in front.

The rear design is where the key differences are. Although both images show the Doogee V will have dual rear cameras, the design is quite different. Geskin says the rear cameras are dual 21MP sensors while the ones in front are dual 16MP sensors.

The image posted by Evan Blass shows the Doogee V shares a close resemblance to another phone, though one that has not yet been released. That phone is the Samsung Galaxy S9+. The curved sides of the phone and the corners give off a strong Samsung vibe but in the first image the sides are not curved.

A key difference between the Doogee V and the Galaxy S9+ is the position of the fingerprint scanner. Leaks have shown the fingerprint scanner is positioned beneath the cameras on the Galaxy S9+ but the Doogee V has its own under the display.

The Doogee V is also shown to have a 3.5mm audio jack, USB-C port, and speaker grille at the bottom. Power button and volume rocker is on the right and SIM-tray is at the top.

OnePlus Resumes Oreo-Based Oxygen OS 5.0 Roll Out For OnePlus 5

Earlier this week, OnePlus cancelled its Oxygen OS 5.0 build for the OnePlus 5 phone due to bugs. The company had said that instead, it will roll out Oxygen OS 5.0.1 but had not provided any timeline for the same.

Today, the company has announced that it has resumed rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo-based Oxygen OS 5.0.1 update, as previously promised. The Over-The-Air (OTA) update, which is about 1587MB in size, is being rolled out incrementally, so it could be a while to be available for everyone.

Oxygen OS 5.0.1 OnePlus 5

In the changelog for this new update, the company has made two new additions which include bug fixes for the third party camera application and fix for network related issues for the European operators.

This latest Android Oreo update for the OnePlus 5 also brings the latest security patch for December. Other changes include a new camera user interface, photo quality optimization, beauty effect for portrait mode, parallel apps, new design for quick settings, battery saver optimization, among others.

It appears that the update is failing for the devices that have unlocked bootloader. The users with unlocked bootloader will either need to re-lock or find a way to flash the update manually.

With this rollout, Oxygen OS 5.0.1, which is based on Android 8.0 Oreo operating system, is now available for OnePlus 3, OP3T, and OnePlus 5. However, the company’s latest flagship device — OnePlus 5T has not received this new update yet.

CES 2018: What To Expect From The Big Tech Companies This Year

“What is CES?” is obviously the first question that people ask when they hear about this acronym. Consumer Electronics Show is one of the most important trade shows of the year related to hi-tech products. If you were asking yourself when this event takes place, you will be glad to know that CES 2018 will start next week, on January 9, and it will end on January 12. Just like every year, we will see a lot of innovation and many companies will take advantage of this event to launch some of their best products for this year. The event will be held in Las Vegas and, in this article, we will inform you about all the possible products that will be showcased at the event.

ces 2018

Unfortunately, the companies did not reveal which products will be unveiled at CES 2018, so we can not tell you for sure which are the exact products that will be showcased. But in the last few months, there have been many rumors and revelations that helped us understand the possible main products that we will discover at the trade show. New smartphones will surely be unveiled, even though just a small number of devices may be showcased. This is because, MWC (Mobile World Congress) gets more attention from smartphone manufacturers than CES and every year, most smartphone flagships debut at MWC in Barcelona. We will see laptop PCs, drones and innovative products like the one related to smart home, IoT, AR, and VR. Given that we mainly talk about phones, here we will show you which products might be launched by each of the most important smartphones manufacturers.

Samsung

Samsung is definitely the most interesting company to attend CES 2018. The Korean giant will showcase the already announced Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8+. They have already been unveiled in December 2017, but at CES 2018 it will be possible to try them and learn about all their functionalities. In case you do not know, Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8+ are two mid-rangers focused on the camera department, and they are also the first midrange phones by Samsung to sport the Infinity Display like Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8. There is a chance that the company will also show Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ at CES 2018, but we do not think they will be officially announced. The company might decide to show a teaser or unveil just some functionalities of its next flagships. Besides these phones, the company is expected to unveil a new Chromebook which will be a convertible laptop with high-end specs (Intel Core M7 CPU and up to 16 GB RAM). It may become the main rival of the Google Pixelbook, which is considered the best convertible with Chrome OS installed.

Google

There is no info about what Google could unveil at CES 2018, but one thing is sure: it will be something big. According to sources, the search giant has prepared a big and standalone booth together with eight hospitality suites, so it is not possible that the company will not showcase important products. Someone thinks that the Big G might unveil new high-end Chromebooks like the Pixelbook. Just to remind you, recent leaks revealed that Google is working on a new OS for the Pixelbook which could replace Android: it is called Fuchsia OS.

Huawei and Honor

huawei-logo

Every year Huawei unveils its most important flagship at MWC 2018, so we do not expect to see Huawei P20 at CES 2018, or any other new phones by the company. Huawei will attend the event, but there might be no new products. A reliable hypothesis suggests that the company might announce the launch of its latest flagship Huawei Mate 10 Pro in the United States. Our opinion is exactly the same when it comes to Honor, which is Huawei’s sub-brand. Honor has already unveiled several phones in the last period, so we do not expect any new device at CES 2018. But the company might announce the U.S. pricing for its latest flagship, Honor View 10. We’ll have to wait and watch!

LG

We can expect something better than Huawei from LG at CES: first of all, the company should unveil the new affordable phones from its K series, including LG K10 (2018). The cheap mid-ranger is expected to come with a 5.3-inch Full HD display, 3 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage. The company has just announced new Smart TVs with AI, LCD, and OLED panels, and it will probably showcase them at CES 2018. New gadgets may come as well, like like a ThinQ smart speaker powered by Google Assistant and other smart home products. It is unlikely that LG will launch the flagship G7, which should be made official at MWC 2018, just like every year.

Sony

We think that Sony might unveil at least three new Android phones at CES 2018. The devices in question are Sony Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra and Xperia L2. The first twos are mid-range phones, while the third one will be an entry-level with a very affordable price. We already saw some leaked renders of the devices: Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra will probably come with more optimized bezels compared to the previous generation, but the display will remain 16:9 (with a Full HD resolution). They will probably be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, and this means that the company has finally moved from MediaTek to Qualcomm even for its mid-rangers. Sony Xperia L2 may come with a 5.2 inch HD display and 3 GB of RAM, while the XA1 series may be launched in two configurations with 3 or 4 GB RAM and 32 or 64 GB of storage. Take this info with a pinch of salt: the company may even decide to unveil these handsets at MWC 2018 like their predecessors.

Asus

asus_logoAt CES 2017, Asus launched two important phones: the innovative Asus Zenfone AR and the camera phone Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom. This means that we can expect a new device at CES 2018, but there are still no leaks or teasers about a new Asus device this year. On the other hand, there are some rumors about a new laptop with Chrome OS that might make its debut at the event. It may be a new version of C302CA, so we can expect a laptop which might become a rival tot the Google Pixelbook. The Chromebook is rumored to come with an Intel Core M7 CPU and up to 16 GB of RAM.

Nokia

nokia-logo

HMD Global has just announced the Nokia 6 (2018) with more optimized bezels compared to the previous generation, and a Snapdragon 630 SoC. So the company will probably showcase the new phone at CES 2018, and according to some rumors, we may even see a new flagship device in Las Vegas. We are talking about Nokia 9 which, according to rumors, may be released with a Snapdragon 835 SoC and a full border-less display. There is no official confirmation about this phone by HMD Global, so take everything with a pinch of salt and treat them as unconfirmed rumors. If there will be no Nokia 9 at CES 2018, it is likely that HMD Global will showcase it at MWC 2018 like Huawei and LG should do with their next flagships.

HTC

HTC Logo

After launching a more powerful version of the HTC U11 (U11 Plus), the Taiwanese giant may attend CES 2018 to launch a cheap version of its latest flagship, which is said to be called HTC U11 EYEs. But there is no official confirmation for this device as well. From what rumors suggest, this handset will be equipped with a bezel-less display just like the U11 Plus, but its resolution will be Full HD+ instead of Quad HD+. The quantity of RAM is said to be 4 GB, which may be paired with 64 GB of internal storage. The Taiwanese company might also decide to reveal new details about its Vive products for mixed reality.

Lenovo

lenovo_logo

Lenovo has already unveiled a new line of convertible laptops which will be showcased at CES 2018. Nine tablets belonging to the ThinkPad T, X, and L series have been unveiled a few days ago. The most powerful tablet sports an Intel Core i7 8th gen CPU paired with 16 GB of RAM, and up to 1 TB of internal storage. The laptops are equipped with support for stylus, starting at $609. The most powerful one will cost $1459. There is no info about new Motorola phones for CES 2018.

Others

There will be many other minor companies which will attend CES 2018 with new products. Among these ones, there will be JVCKenwood which should unveil new smart products for cars, ZTE with an alleged new phone, and much more. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, no company has unveiled its full program for CES 2018, so there could be a few surprises (Google?) and we can only make speculations at this moment.

What are your thoughts about this year’s CES?
