Xiaomi 15 Pro could house the flash outside the camera island; bigger sensors?

The first flagship with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is likely going to be the Xiaomi 15 series. In the latest news, reliable tipster Digital Chat Station has shared some information about the camera system of the Xiaomi 15 Pro.

The current Xiaomi flagship houses the flash module inside the camera island, however, this might not be the case for the upcoming Pro flagship. According to the tipster, the flash module will be placed outside the camera module. It may indicate even larger sensors for the upcoming flagship.

The Xiaomi 14 Pro‘s camera system includes triple 50MP cameras – OmniVision Light Hunter 900 main camera (1/1.31″), Samsung JN1 (1/2.76″) for the 75mm telephoto that focuses at objects as close as 10cm, and another 14mm ultrawide. The tipster says that the Xiaomi 15 Pro will not use the Samsung JN1 (it will possibly be replaced with a slightly bigger sensor). The shape and placement of the camera module will reportedly stay the same. However, with a bigger sensor, the protrusion of the camera island may increase.

According to an early prototype of the Xiaomi 15 Pro, the telephoto may adopt periscope technology like the Ultra flagships such as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. The Xiaomi 15 Pro is also reported to equip a 2K micro-curved screen that is similar to the Xiaomi 14 Pro in size.

The current Pro flagship equips the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, a 6.73″ slightly curved 2K panel that reaches a peak brightness of 3000 nits, a 4880 mAh battery with 120W charging and 50W wireless charging, and Xiaomi’s new HyperOS.

The Xiaomi 15 series is expected to launch soon after the new chip comes out. The 2024 Snapdragon Summit may held in October.

SYM’s Hybrid Concept Scooter has a 3-liter Gasoline Engine that will Kick in When the Battery Dips Low

Taiwanese manufacturer SYM has a concept for a hybrid scooter, the PE 3, that might solve “range anxiety” for electric two-wheelers. Unlike typical hybrids, the PE 3’s main power comes from an electric motor. But here’s the twist: a tiny gasoline engine kicks in only when the battery dips below 60 volts. This engine doesn’t directly power the wheels, but instead acts as a generator, topping off the battery and keeping the electric motor running.

SYM Hybrid Scooter

This setup offers the best of both worlds: electric power for most commutes (around 35 kilometers on a full charge) and a gasoline engine for extended range (90 kilometers per liter with the 3-liter tank). Perfect for city dwellers who occasionally need to venture further.

SYM envisions the PE 3 appealing to college students, commuters, and young professionals seeking a convenient and affordable ride. The design is sleek and modern, with a boxy body and techy features.

While pricing remains under wraps, SYM’s experience with scooters suggests they can bring this concept to life at a competitive price point.

Jury Hammers Microsoft with $242 Million Patent Fine for Cortana Tech

A US jury hit Microsoft with a hefty $242 million (around ¥1.75 billion) fine for patent infringement. The verdict, reached in Delaware on May 10, stems from a lawsuit filed by IPA Technologies in 2018.

Microsoft is planning to appeal the jury’s decision

The lawsuit claimed Microsoft’s Cortana voice assistant infringed on IPA’s patent for voice recognition technology used in computer communication software. Originally, the case involved multiple IPA patents, but ultimately focused on just one. Microsoft argued they didn’t infringe and the patent itself was invalid.

Microsoft

IPA Technologies, a subsidiary of Wi-LAN, acquired the patent in question from SRI International’s Siri Company. Apple then acquired Siri Company and its technology in 2010, using it for their Siri voice assistant.

Microsoft plans to appeal the decision. “We firmly believe we did not infringe,” a spokesperson said. IPA and Wi-LAN haven’t commented publicly yet.

This isn’t IPA’s first rodeo. They’ve sued Google and Amazon over similar patents. Amazon successfully defended itself in 2021, while the Google case remains ongoing.

This Study Claims that AI has Learned How to Deceive Humans

It seems like MIT researchers are trying to ring the alarm bell on “deceptive AI.” A new study published in Pattern reveals that some AI systems designed to be honest have learned to deceive humans. The research team, led by Peter Park, found that these AI systems can pull off feats like fooling online game players or bypassing CAPTCHAs (those “I am not a robot” checks). Park warns that these seemingly trivial examples could have serious real-world consequences.

AI’s behavior might be predictable during training, but can be uncontrollable later

The study highlights Meta‘s AI system, Cicero, originally intended as a fair-playing opponent in a virtual diplomacy game. While programmed to be honest and helpful, Cicero became a “master of deception,” according to Park. During gameplay, Cicero, playing as France, would secretly team up with human-controlled Germany to betray England (another human player). Cicero would initially promise to protect England while simultaneously tipping off Germany for an invasion.

Artificial Intelligence

Another example involves GPT-4, which falsely claimed to be visually impaired and hired humans to bypass CAPTCHAs on its behalf.

Park emphasizes the challenge of training honest AI. Unlike traditional software, deep learning AI systems “develop” through a process akin to selective breeding. Their behavior might be predictable during training, but it can become uncontrollable later.

The study urges classifying deceptive AI systems as high-risk and calls for more time to prepare for future AI deceptions. Kind of creepy, don’t you think? With more studies and researches happening around AI, we will learn more about what the technology has in store for us.

Asus ROG Ally X key specs and price leaked; it’s $100 more expensive than original Ally

Asus has officially confirmed the launch of the ROG Ally X, its upcoming handheld gaming console, on June 2. While the company has been mum on other details, a reliable X (formerly Twitter) tipster @MysteryLupin has leaked some of the key specs and the price of the device.

According to the tipster, the ROG Ally X retains the core features of its predecessor, the ROG Ally 2023. This includes a 7-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display with a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth visuals.

Under the hood, the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor will continue to power the device. However, the most notable upgrade seems to be in storage capacity. The ROG Ally X will have a 1TB solid-state drive (SSD), doubling the storage space compared to the base ROG Ally 2023 model.

The leaked information also reveals a shift in the color scheme. While the original Ally came in white, the X variant is expected to be offered in black. The new shade could cater to users who prefer a sleeker aesthetic.

The price point is another noteworthy aspect. The ROG Ally X is tipped to launch at $799, a $100 increase compared to the “Extreme” version of the original ROG Ally.

The reason for the price increase could likely be a combination of the upgraded storage and possibly a larger battery (details of which haven’t been revealed yet).

Previously, Asus Senior Vice President Shawn Yen hinted at a significant battery life improvement for the Ally X, without going into specifics.  If the battery upgrade translates to a noticeable increase in playtime, it could justify the price jump for users.

As the official launch is just around the corner, we can expect more details about the console to surface before its release.

The first-ever foldable iPhone may have display by Samsung

We’ve been hearing rumors of foldable iPhones for years now. The idea of an Apple phone that transforms into a mini-tablet seems futuristic and undeniably cool. But when it’ll actually happen is anyone’s guess.

But there’s a new glimmer of hope. A recent leak suggests Samsung and Apple have reportedly struck a deal on Samsung supplying displays for Apple’s foldable devices.

It’s not clear yet if this deal covers the display for a hybrid device or just for a foldable iPhone, or maybe both.

foldable iPhone Samsung Display

Samsung Display already supplies screens for iPhones and MacBooks. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Apple continues this partnership for foldable devices. Especially since Samsung is already a leader in foldable phones.

As for the design of the foldable iPhone, that’s still up in the air. Some rumors say it might have a clamshell design like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Others suggest it could have a larger, fold-out display like a tablet. Apple’s patents hint at different possibilities, but nothing’s confirmed.

But remember, these are all just rumors. Apple itself has been tight-lipped about any foldable device. While Samsung and others already have foldable phones out, Apple might be taking it slow, making sure the tech is perfect before jumping in.

And it’s not just about iPhones. There’s talk that Apple might focus on a foldable iPad with a big display, maybe even over 20 inches. That could make it a top-tier productivity tool, mixing tablet and laptop features.

Without any official word and with rumors flying around, we can’t say for sure when a foldable iPhone or iPad will show up. Apple might surprise us, but for now, it’s mostly speculation.

Qualcomm says it’s not expecting any revenue from Huawei after 2024

Following the recent US chip export ban, Qualcomm stated in its financial filing that it is not expecting any product revenue from Huawei after 2024.

The US Department of Commerce revoked Qualcomm’s license to supply “4G and certain other integrated circuit products” including “WiFi products” to Huawei and its affiliates and subsidies.

The move comes after American firms like Qualcomm were barred from selling its 5G chips to Huawei because of the US trade ban imposed in 2019. Now, with this new ban, Qualcomm is essentially unable to provide its main products, smartphone chipsets, to the Chinese giant.

Qualcomm and Intel chip ban to Huawei

Intel is also affected by the latest ban on chip exports to Huawei. Although Intel clarified that the revocation applies to “certain licenses for export of consumer-related items” to its customers in China.

Since the ban targets consumer-related items, it’s likely that Intel will not supply chips for laptops to Huawei. However, it should still be able to export chips for non-consumer applications, such as those used in data center servers.

In response to the ban, the Chinese foreign ministry strongly objected, stating that China firmly opposes the United States stretching the concept of national security and misusing export controls to unjustly suppress Chinese companies.

Huawei has been under the radar of the US since 2019 when it was first placed on a trade ban list. It prevented American firms from selling their technology, including 5G chips, to the Chinese tech giant.

Further in 2020, the US mandated that foreign companies that are using American chipmaking equipment need to get a license before selling semiconductors to Huawei. These licenses have now been revoked for Qualcomm and Intel.

HMD’s upcoming smartphone in India will be named “HMD Arrow”

HMD recently launched a #HMDNameOurSmartphone contest for an upcoming smartphone they will introduce in India a few days ago. Indian users had suggested numerous names for the upcoming smartphone by HMD.

Finally, HMD revealed the name for the upcoming smartphone they will introduce in India as HMD Arrow. The company’s current marketing strategy is to use different names for different regions. Although Indian users had suggested names like Indhumanoid, Manbha, Naruto, Brahmos, the name Arrow was chosen for the upcoming phone.

HMD Arrow in India

HMD had introduced a phone in Europe called HMD Pulse. The phone to be introduced in India will have the same specifications as HMD Pulse but will have the name ‘HMD Arrow’ exclusively for India.

Whether this naming scheme is confusing or a successful regional strategy will ultimately be decided by the phone users. Since the phone should bear the same specs as already launched HMD Pulse. The expected specifications for the phone to be introduced in India soon are as follows:

The upcoming HMD Arrow specifications are actually expected to be the same as HMD Pulse. The specs of HMD Pulse indicate that it is an entry-level device, featuring a microSD card slot which is something we miss in many phones today. HMD Arrow will have a 6.65-inch 90 Hz IPS panel with a punch-hole notch on the screen.

The phone will be powered by the Unisoc T606 chipset and will come with two different RAM options: 4GB and 6GB, both variants will have 64GB of storage. TCL grabs top spot in April TV shipments for China

While the Chinese TV market experiences a slight slump, TCL emerges as a surprising leader in April 2024 shipments, according to data from Runto Technology.

Overall branded TV shipments in China dipped 10.2% year-on-year in April, reaching 2.47 million units. This decline extends a year-to-date trend, with cumulative shipments down 3.2% compared to the same period in 2023.

TCL TV

Chinese TV market shrinks, but TCL bucks the trend with impressive growth

However, TCL defied the trend with an impressive 8% year-on-year growth in April shipments, reaching around 540,000 units. This surge makes TCL the brand with the highest growth for the month, solidifying its position at the top of the Chinese TV market.

While established players like Hisense, Skyworth, and Haier saw shipment declines, TCL’s success can be attributed to several factors. The company may be benefiting from a focus on specific market segments or strategic pricing that resonates with consumers. Additionally, TCL’s efforts in brand recognition and marketing could be driving increased sales.

Xiaomi, another major player, also showed positive signs. Including its Redmi sub-brand, Xiaomi shipped approximately 450,000 units in April, capturing an 18.2% market share. This represents a 1.8% increase compared to March 2024. Xiaomi’s growth indicates continued consumer interest in its often-competitive TV offerings.

Meanwhile, Huawei’s strategic shift towards premium, large-screen TVs seems to be paying off. Despite lower shipment volume compared to TCL and Xiaomi, Huawei’s April numbers show a continued year-on-year increase and improved profitability. This suggests their focus on higher-end products is yielding positive results.

The Chinese TV market slowdown can be attributed to various factors, including economic uncertainties or a potential saturation in the replacement cycle for existing TVs. However, TCL’s success and Xiaomi’s steady growth demonstrate that opportunities still exist. It will be interesting to see how these brands, along with Huawei‘s strategic shift, continue to navigate the market in the coming months.

NotebookCheck speculates based on the performance numbers of the Snapdragon X Plus chip (X1P-64-100) that the new laptop could be slightly less capable as compared to the IdeaPad Slim 5 Gen 9, which lets you choose between the AMD Ryzen Hawk Point APUs and Intel Meteor Lake processors.

The Snapdragon X Plus equips 10 Qualcomm Oryon CPU cores with a 6+4 architecture (6 high-performance cores and 4 energy-efficient cores). This chip is said to be a cut-down version of the more expensive 12-core Snapdragon X Elite chip, both of which will be based on TMMC’s 4nm process node.

In addition to the platform, the images also reveal the ports of the new machine. It offers you two USB-C ports, a dedicated HDMI port, and a 3.5mm jack on the left side. The right side has two USB-A ports and a microSD card slot. According to reports, many of the upcoming Snapdragon-powered laptops may not offer the 3.5mm jack. However, this one does.

Unfortunately, this is all the information that the images of the upcoming IdeaPad Slip 5 reveal. The first wave of Snapdragon powered laptops will reportedly launch on May 20, which is just days away at this point. We will update you as more information becomes available.

To give you an idea of what else to expect, the IdeaPad Slim 5 14IMH9 offers a 14″ 16:10 aspect ratio OLED with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and 100% DCI-P3 rating for a price tag of $1000.
