Samsung and Oppo are apparently aiming on improving their 5G enabled modems. A new report has revealed that both companies are licensing key 5G technology from Huawei. So here are all the details regarding this matter.

For those unaware, Huawei is a major player in the telecommunications market apart from also being a known smartphone maker. The company was one of the pioneers of 5G technology, with its telecom equipment being used by a number of operators across the globe. However, following scrutiny sparked by the US, the Chinese tech giant was banned from telecom networks in certain regions. Furthermore, the US sanctions had even impacted its telecom operations as well. But, it appears that the company is still licensing its 5G tech expertise to other brands. A new report stated that Huawei announced a cross licensing deal with Oppo, which includes standard essential patents (SEP) for 5G networking.

According to Adler Fend, Oppo’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer We are very pleased to enter into patent cross-licensing agreement with Huawei. It clearly demonstrates that the two companies recognize and greatly respect the value of each other’s intellectual property. It is a win-win deal for both sides. We will, as always, advocate for the establishment of a sustainable, healthy intellectual property ecosystem, where intellectual property licenses can be resolved through amicable negotiations and every company’s patent value are highly respected.”

The company is also licensing key 5G technologies to Samsung as well. While there are no details regarding the purpose of this licensing, the South Korean tech giant would likely use Huawei’s 5G tech to improve its own 5G modems. Apart from this, the brand could also use 5G networking gear to be used in Samsung Network’s own telecom equipment as well.

According to a SCMP report, Jason Ding, the head of intellectual property at Huawei, made the announcement and revealed its licensing push during a speech on Tuesday at an innovation forum event in Shenzhen, China. During the event, the Chinese tech giant introduced its latest intellectual property white paper as well. As per Ding, “We believe licensing should balance return on investment and cost pressures of implementation in the industry. For every phone that complies with 5G standards, we will not seek a royalty rate higher than US$2.5 per unit.”

Through this, the smartphone maker hopes that the rates “will give implementers of 5G technology a clear number they can rely on for cost estimation and investment decisions. Our goal is to promote broader adoption of 5G across all industries.” For those unaware, Huawei was placed in the trade blacklist by the Trump administration back in 2019, despite being the largest technical contributor to global 5G standards.

As per the report, the company’s revenue from patent licensing alone between 2019 and 2021 is estimated to be somewhere around 1.2 billion US Dollars to 1.3 billion US Dollars. Notably, the effort for licensing its 5G technology and generating revenue also highlights the company’s current situation as it struggles due to the various sanctions against it. The company has had restrictions ranging from access to advances chips, to even technology made in the US imposed on it.

While both the countries and trying out to work a deal, Huawei’s Chief Security Officer recently said that the United States needs to talk to Huawei for the China trade deal.

Now, Zhengfei Ren, CEO and founder of Huawei has offered an olive branch to the Trump administration to resolve the issue between Washington and Huawei. In an interview with New York Times, he said that the company is open to license its 5G technology to American companies. The proposed offer would essentially allow the U.S. to finally get in the race for 5G supremacy.

Ren said: “Huawei is open to sharing our 5G technologies and techniques with U.S. companies, so that they can build up their own 5G industry. That would create a balanced situation between China, the U.S. and Europe.”

He also added that the U.S. companies would be allowed to modify the software code used to run any of Huawei’s 5G equipment or even change it and use their own as they see fit. With such deal, the American licensees will be able to sell their 5G equipment based on Huawei’s intellectual property anywhere in the world, except in China, said Ren.

The 5G market is currently being dominated by four companies — Huawei and ZTE from China, Ericsson of Sweden, and Nokia from Finland. Currently, the use of Huawei equipment is banned from U.S. networks over concerns that it could be used by the Chinese government as a method to spy or disrupt telecom systems. At present, there’s no American 5G equipment maker.

However, the Chinese government would have to approve the deal to make this happen. It remains to be seen if the Chinese government is on-board to see the most valuable assets of its most valuable tech company land in hands of the United States.

While countries like South Korea and the USA have already started 5G operations, it’s now the turn of China as it has now started issuing 5G licenses.

Earlier, it was reported that the commercial 5G license will be issued somewhere around October but since China has now started issuing licenses from today, the commencement of 5G rollout is earlier than expected.

This means that development in the country is progressing faster than expected. An insider of this development said, “China is now issuing 5G licenses, indicating that China’s 5G industry is ready. China has the ability to let the world see what is the world’s leading 5G network!”

Last month, Michael Gao Wenhao, Deputy General Manager of ZTE‘s 5G industrial product line, appeared at the Hong Kong 5G Forum of the Hong Kong Productivity Council headquarters and said that China plans to start commercialization of 5G technology nationwide from October 1st.

As per the reports, the base stations for the 5G rollout in Mainland China are expected to be provided by three companies — Huawei, ZTE, and Ericsson. With this, China will become one of the first countries to offer commercialized 5G.

By 1st October, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom — the three major telecom operators in China, will deploy 30,000 to 50,000 base stations in around 40 cities in China for the 5G services. The 5G deployment in 40 cities is a big task and compared to the USA and South Korea, China will have wider 5G coverage.

In April, China’s first 5G network went live in the Qianhai-Shekou Free Trade Zone in country’s southern tech hub Shenzhen. China’s state telecom carrier China Unicom built 111 5G base stations by joining hands with FTZ (Free Trade Zone) in Shenzhen.

China Unicom has been testing 5G network in Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Chengdu, Fuzhou, Zhenzhou and Shenyang. On the other hand, China Mobile is aiming to bring 5G network in multiple cities and is also planning to build around 10,000 5G base stations by the year 2020.
