Communication technologies continue to develop at full speed. The latest example of this is 5G technology, which is slowly becoming widespread. However, this progress is not at the expected pace when it comes to applicability. Fortunately, some steps are being taken to fix this issue. Lastly, 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) have signed a nduerstanding to boost cooperation on network studies.

The Europe-based 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) have signed a nduerstanding to boost cooperation on 5G and 6G. The 6G-IA is focused on “beyond 5G” (B5G) and 6G research. Like pre-standardization activities, policy and regulatory issues, 5G and 6G frequency concepts, international collaboration and verticals’ engagement to shape next-generation industrial use cases.

The main goal of the 6G-IA is to contribute to Europe’s leadership on 5G, 5G evolution and SNS/6G research. As part of the agreement, 6G-IA will be involved in ETSI’s Research, Innovation and Standards Ecosystem (RISE) group as well as the ETSI Technology Radar (ETR) activities mapping emerging technology areas.

6G-IA and ETSI are working together to make sure their research and standards for 5G and 6G are in line with each other. They will also launch projects to help define future networks. They will also share information with other groups that focus on 6G technology. The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), a partnership between the European Commission and 6G-IA, is expected to launch the first phase of 5G/6G research projects in early 2021. These projects will play a key role in the definition of next-generation networks.

The ETSI Research Conference in early February will provide a platform for these new projects to present their purpose and plans and exchange with standards experts on their standardization roadmaps.

The news arrives from Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and is in line with our previous reports as well. For those unaware, commercial 5G services in India are set to kick off by next year, with telecom operators are already performing trials in various cities. Furthermore, it is believed that 5G networking will contribute to around 450 billion US Dollars to the Indian economy, with applications helping in accelerating development and creating new jobs.

The Union Minister stated that the 5G roll out will begin sometime in August or September 2022. Telecom operators typically need around six months from the spectrum auction to roll out their respective services, so this would give them enough time to prepare for a commercial 5G launch. Although, the government have already offered the firms extended time up to May 2022 to test their 5G networks as well. So we might see a commercial roll out sooner or possibly a limited manner in certain cities.

Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, stated that “The government is also discussing with telcos and other stakeholders on the spectrum auctions that will be undertaken this year.” To aid this, the government also plans on increasing the fiber backbone in India from 1.5 million kilometers to 2.5 million kilometers by 2022.

Now, a new report has revealed that the original plans for 5G auctions might be even further delayed as well.

Previously, we had reported on the Indian government planning on holding the 5G spectrum auction in November 2021. However, this was rumored to have been pushed back to the first quarter of next year. But now, it seems like the auctions have been postponed even further. The reason for the delay is the six month 5G trial extension that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given to a number of telecommunication operators in the country.

This includes the likes of Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Via ETTelecom). Initially, these telecos were granted permission to conduct trials in the 3500MHz band that was allocated by the government. But while these trials were set to expire later this month on November 26, the Department of Telecommunications has apparently extended the 5G trials by an additional six months. This, in turn, means that the 5G spectrum auctions might be held at a date around May of next year.

The news arrives from sources close to the mater who stted that a lot of works still needs to be done on spectrum availability. Furthermore, even the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has also yet to provide recommendation on a number of bands. This includes the 700 MHz, 3.3 to 3.6GHz and the millimeter wave.

The announcement came just a few weeks after Canada’s telecoms spent $9 billion in acquiring the 5G spectrum license in July 2021. The new announcement could slice a chunk in expected revenue for the telcos and they are voicing their concerns.

The move around airports will deprive thousands of 5G users of the full use of their smartphones in the restricted areas because there are fears that the 5G network frequencies could interfere with important navigational devices that could affect safety in the airports. One of the successful telcos, Telus Canada said that the decision could deprive it of up to $100 million in lost revenue. The company says it is indeed surprised that the proposed technical changes would impair a significant amount of the spectrum it won at auction. The comment was filed on September 2 with the country’s Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED). Telus has also noted separately that the mobile industry was taken aback by the move by the Canadian government, and the implications of the policy.

The 5G spectrum licenses were auctioned by ISED and it has stated that it will hold a brief consultation and then put new restrictions in place that will apply to airports where automated landing is permitted. The restrictions will be applied on an individual airport basis. In Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, no 5G stations will be permitted in a broad stretch of space covering parts of Etobicoke, Brampton, Downsview, and Mississippi. Residents in the affected stretches will not be able to enjoy the needed 5G services. The quantum of potential 5G users that will be affected by these new restrictions is still speculative, but this could be huge.

The restrictions are mainly driven by studies that have indicated the potential risks of interference as a result of the 5G connectivity, especially in airports. Some countries have also implemented mitigation measures.

It remains to be seen how the telecom providers will navigate through the thorny restriction regimen and whether there are some remediation measures for the companies. Telus is insisting that there are other options open to the regulator so as not to hurt the interests of the telcos, while still ensuring safety. We expect more fluid movements as the new policy becomes operational around Canada’s airports.

According to a MobileWorldLive report, a GSMA forecast has stated that connections of the newer and faster bandwidth would hit 1.8 billion by the end of 2025. In other words, this would account for about 21 percent of the overall connections, with regions like the Asia Pacific and North America registering the highest adoptions in the world. Although, nearly half of all 5G connections will be from China as it is expected to reach 828 million connections by 2025.

The industry group shared this news on its latest Mobile Economy report in which it added that two in five people are expected to live within the reach of a 5G network within a couple of years. GSMA also stated that the adoption of the technology will represent 53 percent of total connections in Australia, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. ON the other hand, China alone would be responsible for half of all global 5G connections.

Similarly, the new telecommunication generation will also be accounting for 51 percent of all mobile connections, reaching 219 million by the year 2025. Furthermore, mobile technologies and services would also contribute a sizeable 4.4 trillion US Dollars to the global GDP in 2020 (up from 4.1 trillion US Dollars in 2019), and are expected to reach 5 trillion US Dollars by the end of 2025.

The rollout for the new agricultural support system is first being tried by soy farmers in the region. Notably, this arrives during the time when the Brazilian government is considering enforcing a ban on Huawei equipment from its 2021 5G frequencies spectrum auctions for telecom operators in the country. At the moment, the 5G technology being offered to producers will help improve crops through the collection of information through a system of sensors.

These sensors will be placed on the fields, on the harvesters, and even on drones, which will offer immediate and accurate meteorological and humidity data, as per Tiago Fontes, Huawei Brasil marketing director. According to a Reuters report, the combination of fast broadband communications with real time cloud data processing will offer farmers information within one hour that would’ve otherwise taken them at least three days to gather.

This would enable rapid action for these farmers that can quickly work to remove diseases and other potential threats to the crops. Fontes further added that “We launched this application for soy to show how 5G used with drones can raise productivity and reduce herbicide costs.” This pilot was first launched in the soy farming town of Rio Verde and utilized the 5G network built by telecom operator Claro. At the moment, it is still unsure what role the company would be allowed in the country’s 5G building, so stay tuned for more updates.

According to TheKoreaHerald report, the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT revealed that the number of 5G subscribers stood at 9.98 million as of the end of October. This marks a sizeable bump of 735,113 from the previous month. Furthermore, these 5G users also accounted for 14,2 percent of the nation’s entire mobile subscriptions, which were around 70.4 million units.

For those unaware, South Korea was one of the first to adopt 5G networking and had introduced the newer and faster bandwidth back in April 2019. Since then, the country has accounted for a large chunk of the overall global 5G userbase. Notably, the jump also arrives just as Apple launches its latest iPhone 12 lineup on October 30. The latest flagship from the Cupertino based giant is its first to support 5G networking, and is also expected to help boost the number of 5G handset users in the region.

At the moment, it is estimated that Apple has already sold over 600,000 iPhone 12 models in the South Korean market since its launch. The rise in 5G users have also led to a steady decline in 4G subscriptions as well. Currently, South Korea has 53.9 million 4G users, which is down from previous month by 397,118 users. Similar to South Korea, China is one of the few other countries that have commercially adopted 5G networking and is about the only one similar to South Korea in terms of coverage and availability.

Many had claimed that the radiation from the newer and faster bandwidth can potentially harm human beings and even some animals, but that has now been debunked by an International authority on the matter.

According to a report from the Internation Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), the 5G network’s millimeter-wave is safe. The German based scientific group assessed the potential health risks of the radio frequency broadcast and issued the statement. This also marks the first time in 20 years, that the advisory has updated its guidelines.

A 5G antenna being tested in a special measuring room at in Regensburg, Bavaria. (Image Via Lukas Barth-Tuttas/EPA)

Notably, the organization is also in charge of setting limits on the exposure to radiation and has optimized its policies for 5G as well, setting a new maximum. However, it has been found that the 5G infrastructure in place in certain parts of the US and Europe have output levels far below the newly set maximum limit. In other words, there is no risk at all with the 5G network currently being implemented.

According to an official from the ICNIRP, the aim of the new guidelines was also to spread awareness and help put unfound beliefs to rest. Meaning, the concerned individual or group can breathe a sigh of relief. Interestingly, during the testing, it was found that the radio frequencies 5G uses in the UK are similar to those that were used in mobile telephones back in 1998.

Multiple testings from the source also confirmed that the radiation levels barely reached 1 percent of the maximum limit. Even when run at the maximum possible power, it still will not cross the 50 percent barrier, although this level will never be reached in day to day usage.

This decision comes with a set of guidelines for its member nations called the toolbox. EU nations will have to implement the guidelines mentioned in this toolbox by 30th April 2020.

The toolbox is the EU’s solution to finding a middle ground in the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China. It contains a set of mitigating measures to address the security risks associated with the rollout of 5G in the region. It suggests member countries to omit high-risk vendors like Huawei from the ‘core’ 5G network infrastructure. Further, it calls for diversification of the supply of equipment by network operators.

In short, Huawei will be allowed to take part in building EU’s 5G networks but only in the non-core areas of the infrastructure. So, mobile operators can use Chinese network equipment in the peripheral parts of the network like access networks. Although this would limit Huawei’s participation in the EU’s 5G rollout, it still goes against the pre-emptive blanket ban recommended by the U.S.

UP NEXT: Huawei builds 5G networking in hospitals to indirectly fight Coronavirus

This seems to be a logical move by the European Union, given how China is its second-biggest trading partner after the United States. Further, the EU is China’s biggest trading partner. So, a complete ban on Huawei equipment wouldn’t have been a wise choice. Further, it follows the UK’s decision to allow Huawei in building its 5G networks in a limited capacity.

The UK announced yesterday that it would allow Huawei equipment in building its 5G network in the non-core areas. However, at no point would Chinese equipment exceed 35% in any part of its network. This decision made by the U.S. ally is yet another blow to the Trump administration who has urged everyone to outright ban Huawei from participating in the deployment of 5G networks.

Currently, top mobile network operators in the UK are all using Huawei equipment for their 5G networks in some capacity. However, after yesterday’s decision by the government, it remains to be seen how many of them will have to replace existing equipment with other brands.

ZTE, in partnership with China Telecom, has successfully conducted remote diagnosis of the new coronavirus in the Sichuan province of China – with the help of the new age 5G network. The telecommunication equipment maker helped set up a remote 5G diagnosis center in West China hospital and the Chengdu Public Health Clinic Center of Sichuan University last week.

On January 25, ZTE built and interconnected 5G indoor base stations in West China Hospital’s conference room assigned for remote diagnosis and treatment. This way, the conference room was connected to the remote diagnosis and treatment system for the new coronavirus. On January 26, the company built and optimized 5G indoor distribution system at another core point of the diagnosis system. Finally, when the 5G network went live in the area, the company helped the West China Hospital, Chengdu Public Health Clinic Center & Sichuan health and health commission to perform a remote video consultation.

The Sichuan Health Commission has made the West China Hospital of Sichuan University as the central node of the 5G remote diagnosis and consultation system. It will have access to 27 hospitals that have accepted and treated patients with the 2019 novel coronavirus (nCoV).

Further, ZTE plans to build China’s first 5G remote coronavirus diagnosis system covering Sichuan province, city, and county levels. This will provide ‘one network’ for the remote diagnosis at the front-line hospitals that are currently helping out Wuhan. In the next step, ZTE wants to connect Wuhan’s front-end medical rescue team with 5G so as to provide expert diagnosis and treatment services, remotely, from the West China Hospital.

ZTE has also announced that it is currently setting up the communications network for the Lei Shen Shan Hospital in Wuhan. This is the second makeshift hospital that being built in the heart of the city to diagnose and treat coronavirus patients. ZTE, in partnership with China Mobile, will set up a 5G network in this hospital for aiding patient treatment, likely via remote consultations. The hospital is expected to start operations from February 5, 2020.

Nigeria may get its own 5G network as early as next year as MTN Nigeria has announced the test-run of the first 5G network in Nigeria. The test was reportedly carried out on Monday in the country’s capital city, Abuja.

Apart from being the first 5G test run in Nigeria, it is also the first of such test carried out in West Africa. A statement by the telecom giant revealed that the feat became possible as a result of the strong collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC), and MTN Nigeria. The test would be carried out in three cities using hardware from Huawei, ZTE and Ericsson.

EDITOR’S PICK: First Samples from the 108MP Mi Mix Alpha is here & we are not impressed!

The telecoms giant deployed a high-speed, low-latency virtual reality game to show the swiftness of 5G. Visitors also experienced ultra-high-speed streaming and downloads on 5G devices and interacted in real-time with life-like 3D holographic projections. According to MTN Nigeria, “3D holographic communication has potential applications for education, medical imaging, video conferencing and gaming, and requires about four times as much data as a streamed 4K video. “

The telecommunications giant further added that the 5G trials would be run in four other cities across the country, noting that the 5G trial will run for three months utilizing trial spectrum allocated to MTN Nigeria by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC). While this is good news, commercial rollout of 5G network may still be a long way from realization.
