Lenovo-owned Motorola brand has unveiled its latest partnership with Indian telecoms giant Reliance Jio. The partnership will see Motorola 5G phones getting Jio’s Stand-Alone (SA) 5G technology. The 5G network will be enabled on Motorola’s latest lineup of 5G models that are currently available in India.

Among the models that will have the SA 5G enabled is the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra and Edge 30 Fusion. Other models include the Moto G62 5G, Motorola Edge 30, and Moto G82 5G. The models cut across the premium, midrange, and budget segments, and all pack 5G chipsets. Jio’s Stand-Alone (SA) 5G technology will enable support for 11-13 5G bands which are reputed as among the highest in the industry.

Apart from 5G connectivity, the new Motorola 5G models come with top-notch features both on the hardware and software aspects. the features are designed to ensure a seamless delivery of a secure and comprehensive 5G network utilizing techs such as 3 Carrier Aggregation, and 4×4 MIMO, among others. Also, enhanced coverage is guaranteed as the phones utilize an algorithm that allows them to seamlessly switch between 5G bands.

Motorola prides itself as the first OEM in the world to launch a 5G smartphone. That isn’t entirely true, though, considering that the phone in question – the Moto Z3 – actually came with a 5G mod which is designed to deliver 5G connectivity to an otherwise 4G phone. While that could be argued as making the device the first 5G phone, the MotoMod wasn’t available until a few days after the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G was released. Thus, the Galaxy S10 is actually the first 5G phone to hit the market.

Huawei endured a turbulent 2020 in Europe and the United States especially. The stringent sanction regime initiated by the US-led to similar restrictions across Europe, especially in the 5G segment, where the company had already established a seemingly unassailable lead. These moves significantly affected the company’s outlook, but recent research by Counterpoint Research has also shown that consumers in Europe may have also been hurt by the exit of the company, as mid-range 5G smartphones average prices from Europe reflected.

The European market did not have any mid-range 5G smartphones as of Q1 2020. Still, the scenario gradually changed so that, by the third quarter of 2020, 5G mid-rangers accounted for about 20% of the segment, and this has risen steeply to 50% of all smartphones sold in Europe at the end of the first quarter of 2021.

The price range considered by the researchers at Counterpoint Research was the $250-$500 range. Huawei enjoyed a great degree of prominence in the mid-range segment of Europe before the decline last year, with its market share virtually extinguished by Q1 2021. Of all the listed vendors, Xiaomi saw the biggest YoY growth in the mid-tier segment, obviously due to its robust offering and aggressive marketing.

Huawei’s loss also translated to growth for other Chinese brands like Oppo, who moved swiftly to bridge the gap resulting from Huawei’s exit. These brands have recorded massive improvements in their European operations. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and other brands on the fringes of the 5G market in Europe are all pursuing robust strategies to break into the mid-range and premium segment of the 5G market in Europe with some flagship offerings.

However, Apple and Samsung remain the clear leaders across the 5G segments in Europe, although the Chinese contingent continues to pursue a share of the spoils in the highly lucrative market.

Market research firm Canalys has predicted in its latest forecast report that in 2020, global 5G smartphone shipments will reach 278 million units, of which 62% (about 172 million units) will come from Greater China, North America (42 million units), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA, 31 million units).

Canalys also predicts that in 2020, smartphone shipments will drop by 10.7% compared to 2019, and it is expected to rebound in 2021, with a year-on-year growth of 9.9%. By then, the entire market will ship more than 1.3 billion units.

The agency believes that the rapid commercialization of 5G smartphones in the Chinese mainland market is a key factor in the huge shipments of 5G smartphones this year.

In 2021, the average selling price of 5G smartphones in Europe is expected to drop to US$765, and then to steadily fall to US$477 in 2024. This is mainly because Samsung and Apple are still the main players in this market, and their products are better than the competition..

At the beginning of 2020, there wasn’t any 5G mobile phone priced under US$300 on the market but now, there are many mid-range mobile phones priced under US$250 that support 5G networks. Realme launched the cheapest 5G phone yet which is the Realme V3 5G priced at less than US$150 in China. It is also the first 5G mobile phone to hit the low-end smartphone market.

Vivo‘s VP and president of its Chinese operations Liu Hong has revealed that Vivo sales since March this year has increased by more than 10% when compared to the same period last year. The VP in a recent interview equally revealed that with the Coronavirus epidemic under control, more than 80% of its workforce has returned to work and that has had a tremendous effect on its production lines with over 90% increase in output. 

This should be similar to what other Chinese tech companies are experiencing which is cheering news considering that only a couple of weeks back, the industry was staring at a total collapse in production due to the government’s social isolation polity and directive for citizens to stay at home.

However, what should interest you most about Liu’s interview should be the aspect where he spoke about 5G phones. The Vivo exec hinted that the company’s 5G phone production capacity each day will surpass 100,000 units by mid-March which is already upon us. More interesting, he also forecasted that the prices of 5G phones will drop to around 1,500 yuan ($214) by the fourth quarter (4Q 2020) or the end of this year.

Vivo has already released three 5G phones this year- the Vivo Z6, iQOO 3 and Vivo NEX 3S. The VP equally stated that the consumer demand for 5G mobile phones exceeded expectations, and the sales of these products were significantly higher than expected. Although affected by the epidemic, since March, sales of Vivo mobile phones have increased by more than 10% compared with the same period last year. That should be due to 5G phones. Liu Hong also revealed that Vivo is accelerating the switch from 4G to 5G. At present, there is no pressure on 4G inventory in the price segment above 2,000 yuan and that is because more persons prefer to go for 5G models even when it is far more expensive than the 4G version. That is an indication of the rapid change in the market forces.

Vivo was one of the top-selling OEMs in the 5G segment in Q4 2019. The company shipped a reasonable among grabbing 13.7% share of the market. It ranked second with Huawei at the first spot with 20.2% market share. The innovative Chinese tech company, Meizu has hinted that its next flagship model which would be called Meizu 17 will be launched sometime in April. This was revealed via an open letter published on the firm’s official Weibo account. The post didn’t include a specific date but the device is expected to be Meizu’s first 5G phone.

Meizu has stuck to its non-conformist approach of not including any form of notch design on its flagship smartphones right from when the notch began trending until now. Instead, the company has maintained the symmetrical design style and in the process has brought out some amazing smartphones with extremely reduced bezels which received rave reviews. But for the poor distribution network and awful custom ROM which keeps some potential buyer away, Meizu might have climbed into the top 5 global vendors by now.

The Meizu 17 is likely to keep up with the full-screen, notch-less design and several renders, including official ones have popped up online. The display will adopt a near-bezel-less approach with just a strip of bezel holding the screen in place on all four sides.

The Meizu 17 will come as Meozu’s 17th-anniversary flagship and will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865 chipset. We equally expect the device to feature an in-display fingerprint scanner, a large battery. It will definitely run Android 10 but then that will be with the company’s FlymeOS skin on top of it.

We expect the company to officially announce the specific launch date in the coming days.

OPPO has officially taken the wraps off its new 5G smartphones: the OPPO Reno3 5G and the Reno3 Pro 5G. Just like I mentioned yesterday, the Reno series officially has one of the shortest product cycles in the market this year, with the new Reno3 models replacing Reno2 models that were announced just a few months back. The third generation Reno3 models come with 5G, a large battery with fast charging, and a quad-camera setup and most of all, a slim and relatively lightweight body.

OPPO seems to have given priority to form factor for the new Reno3 models, which is a big shift from the bulky and heavy Reno 5G and Reno2 models. Both the models are relatively lightweight, weighing only around 180 grams and featuring 8mm bodies. In fact, the Pro version, even with the curved display, is slimmer and lighter than the standard Reno3.

Let’s take a closer look at both the devices in detail.

OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G Specifications

The OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G is the star product of today’s event, powered by the Snapdragon 765G octa-core processor. It is an important phone, for OPPO as well as Qualcomm, since its the first integrated 5G SoC from the chipmaker. Thanks to the integrated 5G chipset, the phone supports up to 3.7Gbps download speeds and 1.6Gbps upload speeds. The Reno3 Pro comes with Smart 5G that regulates the 5G connectivity to improve battery life by up to 30 percent. The phone features two storage options: 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

OPPO has employed a unique 360° surround antenna design that ensures the Reno3 models can smartly match different antenna groups to ensure consistent data speeds. So you don’t have to worry about the smartphone death grip that comes in between you and your streaming/ gaming experience. There’s also a special 5G + Wi-Fi 5GHz dual connectivity model that combines the two networks to boost your overall network speeds. OPPO claims this mode can increase download speeds by up to 28 percent!

The display is one of the highlights of the Reno3 Pro 5G. The phone comes with a flexible AMOLED display that’s curved on the two sides, similar to the Galaxy S10. On the top-left corner of the display, you’ll find a small punch-hole camera measuring 3.92mm in diameter, making it smaller than the S10’s punch hole. The 6.5-inch curved display also supports 90Hz refresh rate, joining the likes of the OnePlus 7T Pro with such high refresh rates.

The Reno3 Pro 5G also employs a three-dimensional cooling system with a double layer graphite sheet to ensure effective heat dissipation. The phone comes with an in-screen fingerprint module that measures just 0.26mm in size, which is a significant (nearly 90%) reduction as compared to a traditional 2.6mm module. OPPO adds that the fingerprint recognition area has increased by 5mm to 54mm.

Coming to the camera setup, the OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G features a quad-camera setup that consists of a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary sensor paired with a 13MP telephoto lens that supports 5X hybrid optical zoom, an 8MP wide-angle camera with 116-degree field of view and a 2MP black and white camera sensor. As revealed in the teasers before, the OPPO Reno3 and Reno3 Pro support Ultra Steady cameras that utilize the ultra-wide camera along with ultra-steady algorithms and high-precision gyroscope to stabilize videos.

The OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G features a 4025mAh battery with VOOC 4.0 30W fast charging technology. OPPO claims that the device can charge from 3% to 50% in just 20 minutes, up to 70% in 30 minutes and 100% in 56 minutes. The phone features stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. Note that there’s no headphone jack on both the models.

As for software, the Reno3 5G and the Reno3 Pro 5G will come with ColorOS 7 out of the box, making them the first set of devices to feature the new OS.

OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G Pricing

The OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G starts at 3999 yuan ($571) for the 8GB +128GB variant and goes up to 4499 yuan ($643) for the 12GB + 256GB variant. The 8GB RAM model goes on sale on December 31 while the 12GB model goes on sale on January 10, 2020. There’s a special OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G Classic Blue edition (Pantone’s color of the year 2020) as well that costs 4199 yuan ($600) (8GB+128GB) and goes on sale on January 10.

OPPO Reno3 5G Specifications

OPPO Reno3 5G will be the cheaper option in the Reno3 series, featuring the new Dimensity 1000L 5G chipset. The phone supports SA/NSA dual-mode 5G networks and comes with a 6.4-inch FHD+ waterdrop display. Note that the Reno3 features a regular flat display instead of the curved one found on the ‘Pro’ model. The phone is slightly heavier than the ‘Pro’ version at 181 gram (vs 171gm) but it’s still relatively lighter than competitors.

The OPPO Reno3 5G comes with a slightly different setup than its more expensive sibling. The phone features a 64MP primary camera with an 8MP wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP Black & White sensor. So, you don’t get optical zoom on the Reno3 as it skips the telephoto lens. There’s a 32MP front-facing shooter just like the Pro model.

Meizu has not had it smooth in the smartphone industry in the past few years. The company’s market share has continued to decline in the face of stiffer competition and a saturated market. Just like most OEMs bedevilled by the market saturation, Meizu is looking up to 5G for a revival.

The company’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Liang Dongming made this known in an interview with the media. Liang is a veteran Meizu engineer who joined the Chinese firm in 2003 and is currently the leader of the technology research and development team, leading the overall mobile phone research and development work. He disclosed that Meizu still hopes to return to the “brand first” strategy.

The Meizu official stated that after experimenting with a different brand strategy in recent times, Meizu is focusing on 5G mobile phones in 2020. The official also seems to have hinted that the company will be releasing phones with designs styled after the prevailing trend. This should be the biggest change in strategy as the company hitherto stuck with a design maintaining the phone’s display symmetry as against the various kinds of display notches that have been utilised in the last few years.

He explained that the reason why Meizu did not launch 5G mobile phones for the first time was mainly to wait for the official commercialization of the Snapdragon 865 flagship 5G chip. Compared to the 5G phone of the X50 solution, Meizu made the decision to choose the more mature Snapdragon X55 solution, because the latter can bring users a one-step 5G network experience.

In Liang Dongming’s view, 2019 is the first year of 5G, and most products are still in the test phase. 2020 will be the year of large-scale commercial use of 5G. He believes that Meizu’s 5G phones being among the first batch of Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 flagship 5G processors-powered models, will not lack market competitiveness. ” Our first batch of prototypes have been prepared, and we are jointly debugging with Qualcomm and other instrument manufacturers during this time. The progress is relatively smooth, and mass production can be made directly in the first quarter of next year,” Lian said.

Meizu plans to release at least four flagship 5G mobile phones next year as well as AIoT, AR/VR and other 5G ecological chain products. For details of 5G mobile phones, Liang did not give details of the 5G phones but stated that in addition to 5G, Meizu’s innovations in lens, UI, and screen will become the key to enhancing competitiveness.

A recent report by Strategy Analytics says China is key to the growth of the 5G market in 2020. Chinese OEMs are rapidly keying into the 5G drive and a good number of 5G phones have actually gone official in China. China Mobile has joined the train with the launch of the Pioneer X1, its first 5G phone. The phone is presently available to pre-order on Jingdong and Tmall for a staggering 4988 yuan ($704).

China Mobile Pioneer X1 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset which means it packs the Snapdragon X50 modem. The phone packs a 6.47-inch AMOLED display with a  waterdrop notch. The display supports FHD+ resolution and also houses an on-screen fingerprint scanner. Housed inside the waterdrop notch is a powerful 20MP camera.

At the rear, the Pioneer X1 features a triple camera setup comprising of a 48MP f/1.8 main camera, a 20MP wide-angle lens and an 8MP telephoto lens. The flagship model comes with just 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

It gets its power from a non-removable 4000mAh battery. The phone comes with 802.11ac Wi-Fi, dual stereo super linear speakers, and USB Type-C 3.0 interface. The phone equally packs a 3.5mm audio jack and NFC.

Huawei Mate 20X 5G was launched earlier today in China. The phone is one of the few 5G smartphones that have been announced this year. Already, there have been wild speculations about it is launched. Some carriers, even in the UK have indicated willingness to sell the Mate 20 X 5G despite the Huawei/US government debacle.

The Mate 20X 5G version comes only in Emerald Green color with a matte finish on the back panel. The back panel also sports a 5G logo. These are the obvious difference between the 5G edition and the regular Mate 20 X announced last year.

On the internals, it packs a 4200mAh battery which is slightly lower than the 5000mAh cell on the Mate 20 X. The inclusion of 5G antennas is responsible for the reduction in the size of the 5G edition. However, the 5G version comes with a quicker 40W fast charging technology and  Huawei did include a 40W charging adapter.

Also, the device comes with a Balong 5000 modem that can achieve peak download speeds of 4.6Gbps in the sub-6Hz low-frequency band. The speed improves by 10X to 6.5Gbps if using millimetre wave or high-frequency band. But the 5G network is only restricted to the first SIM slot. The second SIM is limited to 4G networks only.

he rest of the specifications remain the same with the 4G Mate 20X. That is a massive 7.2-inch OLED display with a waterdrop-style notch. The display offers an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2244 pixels. The display also supports DCI-P3 color gamut, DC dimming which protects the eyes of its users from detrimental blue rays released by the screen.

The device is powered by an Hisilicon Kirin 980 chipset, Huawei’s first 7nm SoC. The chipset is mated with 8GB of RAM and there is 256GB of storage onboard. Despite the massive storage, you can still ramp up the storage to an extra 256GB using the hybrid SIM slot. The 5G phone runs EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9.0 but expect the phone to be among the first to get Android Q update whenever it is available. The phone also comes with Game Turbo 3.0.

The camera setup is similar to the regular Mate 20X and it includes a 24MP selfie camera up front. At the rear, you get a triple camera setup in a square-shaped camera module. The main camera is a 48MP sensor, teaming up with an 8MP telephoto sensor and a 20MP ultrawide lens. Other features on the Huawei Mate 20X 5G include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC, USB-C. But there is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

A number of Chinese smartphone makers including Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO, and ZTE have at least one 5G smartphone under their belt. Despite releasing these 5G models in Europe a few weeks back, they are not yet available for purchase in China. This is because China’s 5G rollout is still underway (licenses have been issued to carriers) and it doesn’t make sense to release these 5G models way before there’s actually any coverage. That changes next week as ZTE has announced that its Axon 10 Pro 5G model will be up for reservations starting July 23.

Reservations commence from July 23 but there is no word on a shipping date yet. On the other hand, Huawei revealed a few days back that its Mate 20 X 5G will go on sale on July 26. This could mean that customers will probably be able to get hold of the Huawei-made 5G model before ZTE. Huawei Mate 20 X 5G was already certified by TENAA a few days back. Today, its foldable 5G phone, the Mate X was also certified by the agency.

Apart from these two, it is said that there are two more 5G Huawei devices that were certified. It’s possible that one of these two is a Honor phone since the brand’s President, George Zhao had revealed that they had a 5G model incoming later this year.

These models should soon be joined by other 5G phones from brands like OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus. It is worth noting that Xiaomi, Lenovo, and even Samsung’s 5G models weren’t included in the first batch of 5G certifications in China.

There are just a couple of 5G phones launched already but we don’t expect 5G phones to be a rave this year. Demands may be low since carriers are still testing their 5G networks. So far, the 5G-enabled phones that are available to buy are just a handful such as the Galaxy S10 5G, LG V50 ThinQ, OnePlus 7 Pro, Oppo Reno 5G and Motorola’s Moto Z4 with the 5G Moto mod. Next year may see a surge in the number of 5G phones in the market but according to a research firm,  the new platform which will bring big upgrade in data speed will only become a norm in the next four years.

Canalys projects that 5G phones will sell way more than 4G smartphones by 2023. In other words, between now and the next four years, more carriers would definitely deploy their 5G infrastructures and also more OEMs will launch 5G phones on the flagship and even mid-range tier. The research outfit also projects that most of the 5G adoption will take place in China. This projection is hinged on the Chinese government’s effort and support as well as the efforts of tech companies.

Globally, Canalys estimates sales of 5G phones will peak at an estimated 800 million units, making up 51.4% market share. China will account for 34% while North America will make up approximately 18.8%.

In a statement released today, Nicole Peng, vice president of mobility at Canalys said; “China is also home to many major 5G equipment suppliers and smartphone vendors, which will be responsible for an aggressive marketing push over the next few years.” He also added; “But mass market adoption of 5G smartphones does not necessarily mean a successful 5G deployment. The full 5G deployment will take much longer, and be much more complex than the previous network generation, in order to realize the benefits of 5G beyond eMBB (enhanced Mobile Broadband).”

Hisense, the Chinese household electronics manufacturer that also makes phones has revealed that it will release 5G smartphones in 2019.

The info was revealed in an interview by Fang Xueyu, the general manager of Hisense Communications. She said Hisense has been researching and developing 5G technology for about 3 years now.

Back in 2015, Hisense joined the IMT2020 5G team formed by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, theMinistry of Science and Technology, and the National Development and Reform Commission. They were also involved in the development of NB-IoT standard projects for the China Communications Standard Association.

Hisense also joined the 5G Terminal Initiative Plan set up by China Mobile this year to develop the 5G industry.

Ms. Fang Xueyu says the company will begin developing prototype 5G devices this year and then begin testing next year. It will also participate in network testing. The first set of 5G phones should launch later in 2019.

Hisense is reported to have been a key player in the mobile industry for over a decade now. It is said to own one of the most powerful R&D teams in China. However, restructuring in 2014 led to other brands overtaking them.

Lately, Hisense has been churning out some pretty nice phones that perfectly combine design, functionality, and price. Last year, it released the dual-screen Hisense A2 which has an AMOLED display on one side and an e-ink display on the other side just like the Yotaphone. Qualcomm held a technology summit in Beijing, China yesterday aimed at strengthening ties with its business partners. Among those in attendance was OPPO’s CEO Tony Chen who spoke on his company’s plans for the next-generation 5G network standard. 

According to the CEO, OPPO had begun its 5G research and development three years ago in close cooperation with Qualcomm. Thus, the company will be among the first batch of OEMs to launch 5G mobile phones. Te CEO specified that OPPO isn’t likely going to be the first to adopt the 5G network standard but will be among the first two phone makers to manufacture 5G products. Oppo also announced during the event that it has joined Qualcomm’s “5G Pilot” program to jointly explore innovations in mobile technology in the era of 5G era.

5G is the next big thing in the telecommunications world and all the big players from infrastructure builders, to component and consumer product manufacturers to network operators are already laying out plans and even executing them all ready for the new network standard. A couple of months back, Qualcomm released its royalty terms for 5G technology for OEMs and also recently successfully tested the world’s first 5G new radio system which would usher in the next-gen technology.
