Hu Houkun, rotating chairman of Huawei recently stated that “5G has provided a considerable upgrade in mobile experiences for consumers, and it’s already starting to empower different industries around the globe. Progress was much faster than we expected, especially in terms of subscriber base, network coverage, and the sheer number of 5G terminals on the market.” The senior official made the statement during the Chinese tech giant’s 12th annual Global Mobile Broadband Forum earlier this week.

Notably, the call for cooperation arrives after 5G networking has seen five years of commercial deployment. As of right now, there are currently 176 commercial 5G networks around the globe that offer services to more than 500 million customers. Furthermore, the average download speeds of the latest generation of networking is roughly 10 times faster than 4G network, which has had a positive impacts in various fields.

At the moment, the enterprise market already has over 10,000 projects that are exploring B2B applications of 5G. This includes the manufacturing, mining, and ports businesses that have passed the trials, which are fields Huawei has recently been shifting its focus towards. Hu further added that “Right now more than half of these 10,000 5G to B (5G to business) projects are in China. We have a huge number of use cases already, but we need to build more sustainable business cases.”

According to an SCMP report, the Chinese smartphone maker is working with the Swedish telecommunications giant to further advance 5G technologies. Just last week, the former revealed its upgraded communications laboratory in Shenzhen, China through its partnership with Ericsson. This site will be responsible for conducting 5G research and development activities, which include protocol updates and regional tuning to test for upcoming smartphones.

Furthermore, the company’s lab in Shenzhen will also focus on exploring potential killer apps that could fully utilize the “promise of 5G mobile technology,” and also improve the user experience in terms of power consumption, as per Chris Shu, Oppo’s vice president and general manager of product strategy and cooperation. Shu further added that the brand will be using its own software capabilities to push new developments in 5G technology.

At the moment, the smartphone maker is also building its new headquarters in the city. This location will consist of four planned towers, with the tallest one will contain 42 storeys and reach a height of 200 meters. The push for 5G development from Oppo arrives as its rival Huawei, has struggled due to the impact of US sanctions. While Huawei was once a major contender in the smartphone market, its presence has fallen greatly due to the near crippling effect the blacklist caused. Now, the brand faces tighter restrictions when sourcing materials and other technology, which would be the perfect opportunity for Oppo to seize the market.

The products were under its “1+N” plans and seek to expand its existing portfolio of networking based technology.

During the conference, the Chinese telecommunications giant stated that it has put together its leading algorithms and technology along with ultra wideband radio to launch the industry’s only Massive MIMO product. This supports 64T64R and 400 MHz bandwidth and is the first of its kind in the world, as claimed by the brand. The new product also supports the entire C band, which would enable operators to deploy their multi-segment spectrum on just one module to reduce the number of devices.

Furthermore, Huawei also highlighted that the 64T64R Massive MIMO is also the lightest of its kind as well. The company also showcased that it is a light weight base station that is easy to install and even takes up less space, which contributes to its lower construction cost. A single module weighs as little as 19 kilograms and can be installed by just one person while also delivering on performance. Other notable aspect regarding the new 5G product is that it is the industry’s only 64T A+P Solution and is also the only unit that supports three low and three medium bands.

The solution is also the only commercial FDD massive MIMO in the market as well. Yang Chaobin, President of Huawei Wireless Product Line, stated that “By launching this series, we aim to bring multi-antenna technology to all scenarios and bands. Several products within the solutions are one-of-a-kind and will help operators efficiently deploy 5G networks and provide first-rate experience. Huawei will work with global partners to innovate and share 5G benefits with all.”

According to a BusinessStandard report, the Chinese tech giant, which is also the one that holds the maximum number of patents for 5G technology, made the statement back on Wednesday. Huawei Founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei, said that “We are open to transferring all of our 5G technologies, not just licensing production to others. This will include source programmes and source code to all the hardware design secrets as well as the know-how, and the chip design.”

The senior executive made the statement during the opening ceremony of the intelligent mining innovation lab in Taiyuan. Over the last several months, a few regions like the US, Australia, the UK, and some European nations have banned the company from selling its 5G equipment to local telecom operators over alleged security risks. Huawei has actively denied any allegations and has even called for open trade policies.

Ren further added that “Both the US and China need to develop their economies, as this is good for our society and financial balance. Everyone needs this. As humanity keeps making progress, no company can develop a globalized industry alone. It requires concerted efforts around the world.” The statement from Huawei is likely to create transparency between the OEM and various governments, since it has been accused of being a front for the Chinese government and its interests on multiple occasions.

Also, the Chinese rugged phone manufacturer Ulefone revealed that they will be bringing 5G to rugged phones in 2020 using MediaTek’s new SoC.

This year was the year that the commercial use of 5G kicked off and operators in many countries around the world are beginning to upgrade their infrastructure to move to the future of wireless communications. Also, many smartphone manufacturers began launching 5G-capable smartphones. The lead on 5G smartphones is currently taken by Samsung’s Note 10 Series and Huawei’s Mate 30 Series but there is no 5G rugged smartphone on the market. Ulefone had already announced the Armor 6 5G version but was canceled as the MediaTek M70 5G modem didn’t make it to the market.

The just-announced Dimensity 1000 is the 3rd 5G SoC on the market and is manufactured with TSMC’s 7nm production process. It comes with the latest ARM Cortex-A77 cores operating at up to 2.6 GHz and -according to the company- the overall performance is even faster than Huawei’s new Kirin 990. The GPU used is Mali G77 and supports FHD+ displays up to 120Hz and 2K+ displays up to 90Hz.

As for the networks supported, Dimensity 1000 supports NSA/SA 5G networks and 5G two carrier aggregation (2CC CA), the downlink/uplink speeds are up to 4.7Gbps/2.5Gbps over sub-6GHz networks, 2 times higher than Kirin 990 SoC. Demensity 1000 is also the world’s first 5G flagship chipset which supports dual 5G SIM/dual standby, and it also integrates the latest Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1+ standards!

Also, coming with the world’s 1st five-core image signal processor (ISP), Dimensity 1000 supports 80MP cameras sensors at 24fps and a range of multi-camera options such as 32+16MP dual cameras. The rest of Ulefone’s new device specs are yet to be revealed. After all, it is too soon but judging from the company’s previous record in rugged phones, we believe that the upcoming 5G rugged phone will bring consumers an unprecedented rugged 5G experience.

Recently, they have successfully completed the Helio M70 5G Modem testing with the Nokia AirScale 5G Base Station. It’s a great achievement in order to facilitate the next wave of 5G connectivity.

Further, the new setup will be 3GPP Rel-15 New Radio (NR) standard compliant. This ensures that it will be compatible across various network architecture and connected devices on any frequency band.

Both the companies worked quite strenuously to setup the compatible environment for testing. They used a 3.5 GHz band N78 standalone connection with 100 MHz channel bandwidth and 30 KHz subcarrier spacing. The Helio M70 and Nokia AirScale 5G base station duo were joined by physical layer integration and protocol layer testing to get optimal user experience. It will allow users to enjoy enhanced Mobile Broadband, Ultra HD content, and applications seamlessly. The new setup will let users enjoy faster data without any problem.

The new Base station 5G test ensures that it compiles all the formalities of every 5G frequency band. It will help in flawless operations across different regions using the new module from Nokia and MediaTek. Surprisingly, Helio M70 5G modem is the only chip which is compatible with all networks from 2G to 5G.

Speaking at the occasion TL Lee, General manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit said, “5G connectivity will power a new wave of innovation and make reliable connectivity truly accessible to people and enterprises around the globe.” Further, he added, “We very much appreciate our open and productive collaboration with Nokia, which helped to ensure the market readiness of the Helio M70 solution. Together we are committed to enabling a seamless 5G experience that brings consumers ultra-fast connectivity while maximizing battery life.”

On the other hand, Nokia ought to collaborate further with MediaTek to explore 5G technology even more. Mark Atkinson, head of Nokia’s 5G & Small Cells Business added that “We continue to collaborate with MediaTek to support commercial 5G launches during 2019.” Nokia is fulfilling its commitment towards broad 5G ecosystem with the advent of Nokia AirScale 5G base station.

Already, major manufacturers are working vigorously to attain 5G speeds. Huawei is ready with its Balong 5000 modem chip while Qualcomm is already here with X50 Modem chipsets. Moreover, Qualcomm has gone a step ahead with the recent inception X55 Modem chip which can attain maximum transfer speed of 7 Gbps.

After running for mid-range and low-end devices in developing countries, now Samsung is interested in providing network gear. Samsung is working on to provide a network apparatus for testing upcoming 5G technology in various countries. Replacing Huawei, which is facing troubles in getting orders due to allegations of closeness with the Chinese government, Samsung is set to supply the network gear to required parties.

Samsung Electronics is working to consolidate its position in the telecom equipment business. Many potential customers are taking notice of Samsung’s efforts in building the 5G networks. The Korean giant is in a bid to capitalize on the security fears against the Huawei. Samsung is making efforts to bridge the gap between demand of 5G apparatus. They are reshuffling various employees and managers to assist them in building their network division more powerful.

The company is working to compete against big players like Ericcson, Huawei, and Nokia. Talking to Reuters, a company representative told that many industry insiders and potential customers are overwhelmed with the pace that the company is investing in developing 5G networks. A French carrier Orange’s chief technology officer, Mari-Noëlle Jégo-Laveissière, visited the premises to see the development and was quite happy and surprised to see the advancements.

From the past sometimes, Orange is working with Huawei in 27 markets as their most important partner in providing the network equipment. Now, Orange has joined hands with Samsung to test 5G across different locations. Even though, the South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon made a visit to Samsung’s network division last month. It is believed the Samsung officials asked the minister to coordinate with the Korean giant in recruiting high-level engineers. “We need more software engineers and want to work with the government to find that talent,” Lee was quoted as saying by government officials at his meeting with the prime minister.

It is quite good news for the countries which were looking for alternates to test 5G networks after US allegations on Huawei. It will allow them to test 5G networks without any constraint with the help of Samsung. Well, the company has not detailed any figures which would enable us to estimate the loss and growth of the business. But as a total, Samsung is keen on investing $22 billion in bolstering the 5G mobile technology in the upcoming three years. “We’re bolstering our network business to seize market opportunities arising at a time when Huawei is the subject of warnings about security,” said one of the Samsung sources.

Mainly talking about India, Samsung sources claimed that they are in talks with Reliance Jio, India’s largest 4G telecom operator to upgrade its network to 5G. Samsung official claimed that 5G is not quite a far way in India.

Moreover, in the US, Samsung already has Verizon Communications, AT&T Inc and Sprint Corp in their wardrobe for supplying network equipment.

Overall, Samsung is going to profit a lot if they make the correct moves in the upcoming few years. Samsung’s network business had already made the company earn around 870 billion won ($775 million) last year. Further, Nokia and Ericsson have made $1.4 billion and $2.1 billion last year.

Additionally, Huawei is battling the allegations made by the United States which could enable Chinese agencies to spy. The US has also barred its allies from using the Huawei apparatus in testing the next-gen 5G technologies. In response, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, and a few other countries have pulled off talks with Huawei in bringing 5G technology. Well, some good news is also present for Huawei, countries such as Thailand, Canada and India are working together with Huawei in testing 5G networks.

That move has already seen some countries like Australia, New Zealand, Japan lock out the world’s largest telecommunication equipment manufacturer from their 5G plans. Although there has been no evidence that Huawei has or will ever provide the Chinese government with user data, the company’s troubles got bigger in Poland recently when Huawei’s sales director was arrested alongside a Polish employee of telecom company Orange for spying.

That alleged offence is now making the Polish government consider banning Huawei from providing the country’s 5G equipment. But in a bid to avoid this, Huawei has offered to open a security-testing facility in Poland, if the authorities will agree to that. The company made this offer during a press conference on Wednesday. According to Huawei Poland chief, Tonny Bao, the Chinese company is ready to establish a cybersecurity centre in Poland if authorities accept that as a trusted solution. Another executive also added that Poland’s government had no reason to lock Huawei out of 5G deployments.

Huawei has utilised this security model in some countries in order to affirm its trustworthiness and it has been successful. Last year, the company opened one in Bonn, Germany, and next month it’s due to launch a lab at the very hear of EU-level policymaking – that is in Brussels, Belgium. The facilities are such that telecommunications network operators can come in and test Huawei’s equipment. In addition, Huawei owns a facility in the U.K. called the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) and which was established nine years ago. The UK facility operates on another level, giving British intelligence workers, who comprise some of the staff there, the opportunity to examine Huawei’s equipment.

The US is said to have contacted several countries such as Germany, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Norway, the UK and Denmark in order to get them to shun using Huawei’s hardware for 5G. Seems Germany isn’t adhering to that advice as the latest comments by Chancellor Angela Merkel suggest.

The German Chancellor while addressing students at the Keio University during an ongoing state visit to Japan stated that she simply wants guarantees that Huawei will not be handing over data to the Chinese government. She was a quick to add that the statement is not directed at just the Chinese hardware giant, but to all companies who want to work in Germany, emphasizing that security and privacy are key.

Read More: Huawei 5G tech still trusted by several countries including France and German- China’s Foreign Ministry

Huawei has repeatedly denied that user data could be released to the Chinese government. The company’s founder only recently stated that the company will resist any request by the Chinese goernment for data that compromises users’ privacies. Till date, there is no proof that Huawei could be spying for China btut the company has been accused of several shady trade practices like stealing trade secret. Although there is a law that mandates all Chinese companies to turn in data to the government on request, it is rather weird that other Chinese phone manufacturers don’t get such close scrutiny. The company wasn’t even given any strict set of guidlines that could bring transparency to its dealings with the Chinese government or anyway out of the mistrust. Could it be that the US feels threatened by the rapid growth of the company in the telecommunication industry? Whatever reasons adduced for the ban sounds convincing to some countries as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Czech Republic and Taiwan are already with the US. Norway, the UK and even Germany itself are yet to make final decisions on whether or not to allow Huawei provide 5G infrastructre.

But the furore generated by the company’s ban in the U.S still continues to resonate even in other climes. New Zealand and Australia recently announced that they will not be deploying Huawei’s 5G infrastructure due to security concerns. Just recently, Japan was added to the list of countries that won’t deploy Huawei’s 5G technology. However, the Chinese tech giant is undeterred and apparently still has several partners globally to patronise its 5G equipment.

A recent report covered by Chinese website Globaltimes quotes a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have revealed that companies from more than 20 countries have signed commercial deals on fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks with Huawei. The comment became necessary after media reports emerged that Japan’s big three telecom operators plan not to use 5G equipment from China’s Huawei and ZTE.

According to Lu Kang, spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “Many countries believe Huawei is trustworthy and a partner for cooperation.” The spokesperson was reported to have specifically mentioned Portugal, France and Germany and opined that such examples were enough to show that Huawei is gaining trust from an increasing number of global partners. Beijing has reportedly contacted Tokyo through diplomatic channels to register its objection to discrimination of any of the Chinese companies operating in Japan.

Huawei recently disclosed that it has invested $600 million on 5G basic research since 2013. The company also stated that it spent 4 billion yuan ($575 million) on developing 5G technology in 2017 alone. Huawei also hinted that it has more than 50 commercial deals for 5G globally. This includes pilot projects consisting of over 100 base stations which have already been set up in Doha, London, and Seoul while over 10,000 5G base stations have been shipped abroad.

The three major telecommunications providers in Korea, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus will reportedly deploy the world’s first commercial fifth-gen telecoms services on Saturday by sending out the first 5G signals in Korea at the same time.

The 5G technology rollout almost suffered a setback when there was fire outbreak at the Ahyeon branch of one of the trio KT in Seoul. The fire incident let to a major network blackout and the cancellation of 5G demo sessions and promotional showcase events this week. However, the three Korean telcos have hinted that they will commit to their original 5G deployment schedule.

The list contains popular brands such as ASUS, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, HMD, HTC, Sony, Sharp, LG and Motorola. Others include Fujitsu, computer networking firm Netgear, wireless communications equipment maker Sierra and a couple of names that don’t sound familiar as far as mobile phones are concerned. One name that was conspicuously missing is innovative Chinese brand Meizu.

Meizu has been very vibrant in releasing smartphones with eye-catching design since the return of founder and current president Huang Zhang. A fan posed the question as to why the company isn’t among those who are expected to release a 5G-enabled phone in 2019. Mr Zhang’s response did confirm that Meizu isn’t going to release a 5G phone next year. The CEO clarified that the first wave of 5G infrastructure will be on trial basis. He also promised that the company will definitely launch a 5G mobile phone at the appropriate stage.

Read Also: Oppo attains 5G connectivity support with a customised version of Oppo R15

Qualcomm says its Snapdragon X50 modem will power the 5G technology on phone. The company is also working closely with telecommunication equipment manufacturers like Fujitsu, and several carriers in order to get the infrastructure running as early as possible. Widespread and efficient 5G connectivity is not likely going to be achievable next year. So, 5G phones next year may just be a marketing gimmick.

The race is on between China and the U.S on who will be the first to roll out the technology and from the look of things, China has the upper hand. A study published by Deloitte has shown that China’s spending on 5G technology development in recent years far outweighs the US spending by a whopping $24 billion.

This has created a wide gap between both giants which will be difficult for the U.S to match. 5G refers to the next-generation mobile internet technology which has the potential to enable people to download films and stream high bandwidth video for technologies such as virtual reality. Apart from consumer applications, the technology will come in useful in connecting infrastructure in cities and in the adoption of driverless cars. A recent report by IHS Markit projects that 5G will power $12.3 trillion of global economic output by 2035.

Back to the report by Deloitte, China is tracked to have built 350,000 new cell sites, while the U.S. has built fewer than 30,000 since 2015 till now. The Chinese government-back effort involves billions of dollars in 5G-related spendings. The report noted that “China and other countries may be creating a 5G tsunami, making it near impossible to catch up”. To play catch up, the U.S will need to spend 2.67 times the amount that China does in order to generate an equivalent amount of wireless network capacity. Perhaps, Washington’s realization that catching up with China would be impossible was partly responsible for the recent campaign against the use of ZTE and Huawei’s infrastructural technology by U.S companies. Who knows?

The SingleRAN Pro solution was first unveiled at the global summit in April 2018. The technology is a radio access network (RAN) technology that allows mobile telecommunications operators to support multiple mobile communications standards and wireless telephone services on a single network. The technology incorporates a software-defined radio device and is designed with a consolidated set of hardware components, allowing operators to purchase, operate and maintain a single telecommunications network and set of equipment while supporting multiple mobile communications standards. The solution will enable operators to build efficient, agile, and automated mobile networks in the 5G era.

The conference was an opportunity for the giants in the Chinese tech industry to roll out their plans for the future in terms of research and development (R&D) for the industry. During the conference, Huawei‘s CEO Yu Chengdong was one of the speakers, sharing the same podium with Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun who we reported earlier to have hinted of his firm’s plans to venture in AI on its smartphones from next year.

Huawei’s CEO on his part hinted that the internet hardware and smartphone giant will launch its 5G smartphone for the market in the second half of 2019. Obviously, by 2019, 5G technology would have been perfected and rolled out by a lot of mobile carriers around the world. Presently, we have only see the technology get tested on prototypes like the ZTE Gigabit phone. Qualcomm, ZTE and China Mobile recently announced the successful test of the world’s first 5G New Radio System.

Yu Chengdong also revealed that the past 20 years have been an era of rapid development in the mobile telecommunications industry. He also highlighted the fact that the development of smartphones has brought tremendous changes in people’s lives. He also opined that the new ear is that of artificial intelligence technology and 5G. Already, Huawei has started its AI journey with the launch of the Ai-capable Kirin 970 chip. The company is expected to launch its hardware products with 5G connectivity in 2018 while in 2019, Huawei’s chipset the tech giant will incorporate support on its chip and subsequently launch 5G smartphones.

The new Radio system allows data to run at multi-gigabit per second speeds (>1 Gbps) with a latency of under 4ms. Compared to the 20ms latency that is the standard for current LTE networks, the difference is just out of this world.

The new 5G technology is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards. The 3GPP group is comprised of telecommunications companies that set the standards for 3G, 4G networks and now 5G networks and equipment. As a result of the 5G technology being built on the 3GPP standards, we can expect the development of commercial products that meet the 3GPP specification anytime soon.

The test employed ZTE’s 5G New Radio pre-commercial base station, Qualcomm’s 5G sub 6GHz New Radio prototype, and the data was transmitted over the 3.5 GHz band utilizing 100 MHz of bandwidth. The trial was conducted at China Mobile’s 5G Joint Innovation Center. The three partners intend to showcase this achievement at the China Mobile Global Partner Conference on November 23.
