Continuing the development, the South Korean giant unveiled the world&#8217;s first 200-megapixel smartphone camera sensor last week in the form of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/09/02/samsung-isocell-hp1-200mp-gn5-50mp-camera-sensors/">Samsung ISOCELL HP1</a>.</p>
<p>Now, the company is working on another ambitious smartphone camera sensor &#8212; 600-megapixel which the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/21/samsung-600mp-camera-sensor/">had revealed last year</a>. However, this high megapixel count sensor isn&#8217;t launching anytime soon.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-411034 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung 576MP Camera Launch Timeline" width="2048" height="1130" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline-300x166.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline-768x424.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline-1024x565.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline-696x385.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline-1068x589.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline-761x420.jpg 761w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-576MP-Launch-Timeline-1920x1059.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px" /></p>
<p>During a presentation at SEMI Europe Summit, Haechang Lee, Senior VP Automotive Sensor at <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung Electronics</a> revealed that the South Korean giant plans to launch its 576-megapixel camera sensor in 2025. The image <a href="https://image-sensors-world.blogspot.com/2021/09/samsung-aims-to-576mp-mobile-sensors-in.html">was spotted</a> by <em>Image Sensors World</em>.</p>
<p>Also, it appears that the 576MP camera sensor isn&#8217;t being developed for smartphones but the company is developing it for automobiles. It could also be used in drones and medical equipment but its use-case as a smartphone camera doesn&#8217;t appear to be a priority.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-411039 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured.jpeg?x44794" alt="Samsung ISOCELL Camera Sensor Featured" width="1280" height="720" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured.jpeg 1280w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Samsung-ISOCELL-Sensor-Featured-747x420.jpeg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></p>
<p>Last year, when Samsung confirmed that it&#8217;s working on a 600MP camera sensor, Yongin Park, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Sensor Business talked about the company&#8217;s ambition of going beyond 500-megapixel which is equivalent to the human eye.</p>
<p>A few months ago, it was leaked that Samsung is developing a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/600mp-camera">600-megapixel camera sensor</a> which features 0.8µm pixels and is 1/.0.57″ big. At the time, it was reported that the camera results in a 22mm bulge.</p>
<p>The South Korean company is also expanding the categories of its camera sensors usage from smartphones. It is now planning to provide camera sensors for several categories, including autonomous vehicles (AVs), drones, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iot">IoT</a> (Internet of Things) devices.</p>

Now, the company has an ambitious plan to make a camera sensor that goes beyond the human eye.</p>
<p>Earlier, Yongin Park, Executive Vice President of Samsung&#8217;s Sensor Business had expressed that the company could create a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/sensor">camera sensor</a> that can go beyond the human eye, which in camera technology, said to have 576-megapixels.</p>

<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK:</span> </strong><a title="Nokia appointed to lead European Union’s Hexa-X 6G research project" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/08/nokia-leads-hexa-x-6g-technology-research-project/" rel="bookmark"><strong>Nokia has been appointed to lead European Union’s Hexa-X 6G technology research project</strong></a></p>
<p>Now, it seems that Samsung has started working on the same. The South Korean giant is developing a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/600mp-camera">600-megapixel camera sensor</a> which features 0.8µm pixels and is 1/.0.57&#8243; big. But, the company has a long way to go as the current prototype takes up about 12 percent of the smartphone&#8217;s area and results in a 22mm bulge.</p>

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>The company is reportedly looking to employ the ISOCELL pixel binning technology to keep the camera bump in check. However, before we see the 600MP camera, we expect to see sensors like 150MP and 250MP.</p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s focus for such a high-megapixel count camera sensor isn&#8217;t just smartphone photography but much beyond that. It believes that the technology could have several other use-cases, such as in the medical field and agriculture.</p>
<p>The company is also expanding the categories of its camera sensors usage from smartphones. It is now planning to provide camera sensors for including autonomous vehicles (AVs), drones, and other <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iot">IoT</a> (Internet of Things) devices.</p>

The company was among the first to launch a 64-megapixel camera sensor and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/12/samsung-announces-worlds-first-108mp-mobile-camera-sensor-with-xiaomi/">first one to launch 108-megapixel</a> image sensor.</p>
<p>But it seems that the company hasn&#8217;t stopped yet in terms of megapixel count for the smartphone cameras. Samsung has today revealed in an article that it is now planning to develop camera sensors with 600-megapixel resolution.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-281148 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="730" height="486" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung.jpg 730w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>To put that in perspective, Yongin Park, Executive Vice President and Head of Sensor Business Team, System LSI Business says that human eyes can match up to 500-megapixel resolution.</p>
<p>However, with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/48MP">48-megapixel</a> and 12-megapixel sensors still being standard, it seems like a long journey for the 600-megapixel camera sensor to materialise. To make this happen, the South Korean giant also needs to develop new technologies.</p>
<p>The company has been advancing the pixel binning technology. The 64MP sensors from Samsung use 2×2 pixel binning while the 108MP sensors use 3×3 pixel binning to increase light absorption and mitigate issues related to low-light conditions.</p>

<p>Samsung&#8217;s ambitions for the future camera sensors is not limited to 600MP resolution. The Systems LSI Business division of Samsung, which deals with image sensors, is also looking to make sensors that can register smells and tastes.</p>
<p>Apart from supplying image sensors for smartphones, the company is also reportedly planning to provide camera sensors for other use cases, including autonomous vehicles (AVs), drones, and other <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iot">IoT</a> (Internet of Things) devices.</p>
<p>Currently, 108MP camera sensor remains the highest for smartphones but that is about to change soon. Samsung is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/17/samsung-is-rumored-to-develop-an-150mp-nonacall-camera-sensor-with-a-q4-2020-launch/">working on a 150MP sensor</a> using Nonacell technology and is expected to be available from Q4 2020.</p>
