iPhone 15 Pro Series Set To Drive High Demand With A17 Bionic Chipset

Apple‘s upcoming A17 Bionic chipset is generating a lot of buzz in the tech world, with reports from suppliers in Apple’s iPhone supply chain indicating that it will offer significant specification upgrades in the upcoming iPhone series. The A17 Bionic is expected to deliver a 35% improvement in power efficiency and unspecified performance upgrades over the already powerful A16 Bionic chipset.

The 3nm process reportedly used in the A17 Bionic chipset will offer a higher transistor density, leading to better performance and lower power consumption. Apple has reportedly bought the entire first production run of TSMC’s new N3 process semiconductors, making it the only major player to use a 3nm process in 2023. Rival chipmakers Qualcomm and MediaTek won’t be developing 3nm chips of their own, with MediaTek citing high production costs and Qualcomm taking a “wait-and-see” approach.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to feature the A17 Bionic chipset, and suppliers are anticipating increased demand for the devices due to the significant upgrades. The devices are also rumored to come with a periscope camera, solid-state volume, and power buttons, a slight refresh to design, and a new Sony camera sensor.

In addition, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to feature the A16 Bionic chipset, and all four new devices are expected to come with USB-C connectivity – the first iPhones to adopt the charging standard. Dynamic Island is also expected to make the jump from the Pro series phones to the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

iPhone 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max AnTuTu score shows significant improvement in performance

The “Far Out” event by Apple witnessed the launch of the new iPhone 14 series, which includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. All the models come with some updated features, but the Pro and Pro Max devices get more love. They come with a new design and an A16 Bionic processor. And recently, AnTuTu shared the benchmarking score of Apple’s latest chipset. Let’s look at the details.

AnTuTu has shared the official GPU score of Apple’s A16 Bionic chipset, which powers the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Pro secured a total score of 978,147, whereas the Pro Max managed to score 972,936. This translates into an improvement of around 19% compared to the last year’s iPhone 13 series and also the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus since they feature the same chipset.

The CPU performance has witnessed a decent increase of 17%, and the memory score grew by 10%. The main highlight is the GPU score, which increased by over 28% compared to the previous generation. As per AnTuTu, no smartphone has seen this kind of improvement in GPU performance in recent years.

To recall, the CPU score of the iPhone 13 Pro models increased by 17% and the GPU score increased by 19% compared to their predecessors. Last year, it was the memory score that surprised us with a 44% increase.

Apple’s A16 chip is fabbed on the new 4nm node and comes with six cores, two of which are performance cores and four efficiency cores. It is paired with a 5‑core GPU to handle gaming and graphics performance.

While on the Android side, Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 scores are in the 1,000,000 range. Asus’ latest gaming phone—ROG Phone 6—scored 1,110,172 overall, 261,708 on the CPU test, and 469,592 on the GPU test.

Apple will not be using the 4nm processing tech in the A16 chip, TSMC’s roadmap confirms

TSMC’s 4nm process is the talk of the town these days. Leading brands like MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Samsung have already adopted this process to manufacture their latest chips. It was expected that Apple would also join the party and switch to the new 4nm process for its upcoming A16 chip, however, to our disappointment, the company will likely continue to use TSMC’s 5nm process.

TSMC’s Roadmap, as brought to light by reputable Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, reveals that the A16 SoC for this year’s iPhones will only use the 5nm process. This news coincides with a recent claim made by the leaker ShrimpApplePro who said that instead of the 4nm process, the new A16 chip will benefit from an upgraded CPU and GPU and faster LPDDR5 RAM

Both Shrimp and Kuo indicate that the 4nm process isn’t significantly better than the 5nm approach, and any improvements would be marginal. However, this claim appears to be contradictory because Qualcomm‘s most recent flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, is said to have benefited from TSMC’s 4nm technology.

Using the same fabrication level often limits the generation’s potential performance and power efficiency advancements. However, the A15 chip still provided 10% performance and efficiency improvements over the A14 processor despite using the same 5nm technology. So, it is likely that the upcoming A16 chip will provide more power and efficiency than its predecessor.

It is worth mentioning that the A16 chip will only be present in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro max versions, and the rest two models will carry the same chip as the previous year’s iPhone 13 models.

It was recently reported that Apple is running behind schedule with its upcoming iPhone 14 series. One of the models (Likely the iPhone 14 Max) is said to be facing a 3 weeks delay. It is still expected that the company will unveil its latest smartphones in September.
