We’ve all had that one experience where we had been talking about something that we wished to buy (it could be a new laptop, a smartphone, or whatever), and not long after, we see advertisements of the products that were in the conversation. This has led to many to believe that our electronic products like smartphones, tablets, or smart speakers could be spying on us. But is that really the case? Let’s find out.

This phenomenon isn’t just exclusive to gadgets and could even include certain medicines, furniture, and much more. Thus, when you see an ad online talking about a certain product (which you need) going on discount at a store near you, one would naturally assume that your very own smartphone is spying on you. However, a recent test from the UK’s Daily Mail has suggested that this might not be the case.

The test was conducted by setting up a new Google account on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone that was factory reset to ensure that this is how the device would function straight out of the box. For the test, a 22 year old named Robin was created and a fake Facebook account was also made for this fictitious persona. Following this, daily Mail talked about the names of products nearby for two days straight to see if this impacted the advertisement that were being displayed online through the Galaxy handset.

However, the test found that the smartphone wasn’t eavesdropping on any of the conversation around its vicinity since it did not receive any online ads that were related to said products. In other words, your device is probably not listening to your conversations and is likely tracking your activity based on the products you search for or click on online. Jordan Schroeder, the person that head’s the firm’s network security , also added that OEMs don’t need to listen in on your conversation since there are plenty of other ways of collecting the data that they need from your smartphone.

To further prove this point, Daily Mail used the fake Robin’s account on Google to search for ‘luxury car’ and ‘expensive bed’ using Google Assistant and even Google Search. Follow this, the ads targeted online were all related to cars from high end brands as well as bed companies. Google took it a step further and also created a webpage with brands that Robin want to potentially check out.

For those interested, you can find your personalized page by going to myadcenter.google.com. This is the webpage that basically compiles all the topics and brands that you have been interested in. Keep in mind that this feature won’t work for those who have their personalized ads switched off. One can even customize the settings to receive lesser or even more advertisements related to particular topics or specific brands from the My Ad Center website.

Twitter is apparently planning on making some changes to its advertising policies. The company is set to allow cannabis companies to promote their brand and services on the popular platform.

According to the microblogging website’s new blogpost, “Going forward, Twitter is allowing advertisers to promote brand preference and informational cannabis related content for CBD, THC, and cannabis related products and services”. In other words, the companies that sell products related to cannabis and other related items can freely advertise on the social media giant’s platform. Although, there will still be some restrictions on what you can or cannot advertise.

As per a separate report, the advertisements are restricted from directly promoting or even offering the sale of cannabis itself. However, there are some exceptions to certain types of CBD based products. Apart from this, there will even be restrictions based on age and location to limit who sees the ads related to cannabis. This new shift in policy is one of the latest changes on Twitter after the company got acquired by billionaire Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.

In the official announcement, the Twitter hinted that cannabis companies could use their platform to reach a broader audience. It also added that conversations related to cannabis is “larger than the conversation around topics such as pets, cooking, and golf, as well as food and beverage categories including fast food, coffee, and liquor.”

Twitter is apparently offering free advertisements to the brands that use its platform to market themselves. The social media giant is offering free advertising in an attempt to win back clients for its advertising business.

For those unaware, Twitter relies quite a bit on advertising as a revenue source similar to other social media giants. Now, the microblogging platform is offering free marketing to brands to help its advertisement business, which has been in decline following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company. In other words, the company is seeking to attract clients by offering a free ad campaign that will match advertiser’s ad spending up to 250,000 US Dollars.

Meaning, the clients can avail a full 500,000 US Dollar investment in advertising that must run by 28th February 2023, as per the leaked emails. However, Twitter has yet to respond to any comments regarding this matter. This initiative is basically another step to increase ad expenses by its clients. The new ad campaign might also be used to bring promoted tweets that can dun during the Super Bowl week, which is a key period for Twitter.

For those unaware, clients typically spend more during the Super Bowl week since it helps expand the respective brand’s reach. The Super Bowl is also Twitter’s biggest revenue day of the year. In recent times, many brands like Pfizer, United Airlines, and auto makers General Motors and Volkswagen have stopped spending on Twitter. Similarly, 75 out of the top 100 spenders on ads on Twitter also lowered their spending as well.

Now, the company is adding a new feature to Apple Maps which is not available on Google Maps, but users won’t be happy about it. The company is gearing up to start showing advertisements in the mobile application from next year.

As per the latest report coming from Mark Gurman on Bloomberg in his Power On newsletter, Apple’s engineering team has already started working on the software to support search ads. He further adds that users could start seeing advertisements in the app as early as next year.

Previously, it was reported that the Cupertino-based technology giant had tested an internal version of the Maps app with search advertisements. It won’t be the first application from Apple to have ads as the company’s App Store is already serving ads.

As for the ads on the App Store, developers can pay Apple to prioritize their software in search results, ensuring it shows up at the top of the page for specific terms. The search ads on the Maps will work similarly where businesses can pay Apple to have their establishment show up higher in local listings where users search for relevant terms.

The development comes at a time when Apple is planning to expand its advertisement revenue. Currently, the company’s advertising business generates about $4 billion in revenue annually, but Todd Teresi, who is heading the department, is aiming to increase it to at least $10 billion per year.
