<p>The Global 5G-A Commercial Pilot Program launch conference was held in Shanghai yesterday. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Huawei</a>&#8216;s Executive Director and Chairman of the ICT Infrastructure Business Management Committee Wang Tao delivered a keynote speech at the conference. The official shared three key changes in the combination of 5G-A and AI and predicted how the proportion of AI-powered smartphones might change (or increase) going forward.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/AI-retouch.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-634355" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/AI-retouch.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/AI-retouch-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/AI-retouch-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/AI-retouch-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/AI-retouch-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Huawei Pura 70 series AI Photo Retouch</figcaption></figure>

<p>Wang Tao believes that AI-powered smartphones will account for 11% of shipments this year. He added that it could reach 90% by 2030. It seems from his speech that the integration of LLMs and major AI features will become a standard for smartphones within a couple of years.</p>

<p>&#8220;We will soon see a huge boost to traffic from AI. At the same time, 5G-A networks will be able to provide higher speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity to meet the network demands of the AI era,&#8221; said Wang Tao.</p>

<p>Currently, many flagship smartphones from different Chinese and overseas manufacturers like Huawei, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OPPO</a>, Samsung, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a>, and Apple have integrated relatively lightweight Large Language Models to perform certain tasks on-device, which offers a couple of advantages. It makes the advanced features more secure and doesn&#8217;t require an internet connection at the same time. </p>

<p>For more advanced features, the phone the phone communicates with a cloud server that runs larger LLMs. As the LLMs get more efficient, and the chips get more capable, companies will be able to run more features on-device, which will not only make it more appealing for the user but also likely benefit the manufacturers by reducing the operating cost of the cloud servers.</p>

<p>Notably, Apple was the last to enter the market of AI smartphones. The company&#8217;s latest iOS version, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/06/18/ios-18-beta-offers-these-key-improvements/#:~:text=iOS%2018%20is%20currently%20available,the%20improvements%20are%20discussed%20below." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iOS 18</a>, comes with &#8220;Apple Intelligence&#8221; which adds new and exciting capabilities to its system apps and voice assistant Siri.</p>

<p>Market research firm Canalys released a report that shows the current market share of Smartphones with major AI capabilities and also predicts how it will change over the next couple of years. </p>

<p>According to this report, 16% of globally shipped smartphones at present already integrate at least some sort of AI capabilities and it will reportedly reach a whopping 54% by 2028. You can see the prediction for each year in the image below.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="640" height="358" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Canalys-forecast-on-AI-smartphone.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-628391" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Canalys-forecast-on-AI-smartphone.png 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Canalys-forecast-on-AI-smartphone-300x168.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure></div>

<p>Industry analysts believe that the market for smartphones with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/artificial-intelligence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI capabilities</a> will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 63% between 2023 and 2028. It is expected to be driven by consumer demand for enhanced features such as AI assistants and edge-to-edge processing.</p>

<p>Market research firm Canalys expects this shift to first appear in the flagship models. Currently, there are obvious technical limitations where the on-device models can only run on high-end devices. However, the models can get more efficient over time and are expected to be gradually accessible to the mid-range segment.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="640" height="355" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Vendors-in-AI-smartphone-business.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-628392" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Vendors-in-AI-smartphone-business.png 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Vendors-in-AI-smartphone-business-300x166.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure></div>

<p>According to the market research firm, the transformative potential of smartphones with generative AI capabilities, driven by AI technology, begins sort of a new era for the smartphone industry. In the next 3-5 years, the addition of AI is expected to significantly improve the user experience. Sergio Buniac, the President of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motorola</a> and the Senior Vice President of Lenovo Mobile Business, also noted the same while sharing <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/05/29/motorola-aims-to-become-third-largest-smartphone-maker-outside-china/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">his vision about Motorola&#8217;s smartphone business</a>.</p>

<p>Companies such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> have already integrated a host of AI-based features into their recent flagships, although, there is no &#8216;AI phone&#8217; or a similar branding yet. Various Chinese smartphone makers Huawei, Honor, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo are also pushing the limits to incorporate as many AI features as possible in their high-end products. Their approach to integrating generative AI capabilities into devices includes everything from building in-house chips to training models for specific purposes.</p>

He emphasized that AI integration is not merely a gimmick but a significant industry trend. Liu Zuohu projected that other companies would inevitably follow suit within the next three months. The internal meeting, captured in an exclusive video obtained by Sina Technology, showcased Liu Zuohu&#8217;s insights and OnePlus&#8217;s recent performance.</p>

<h2>Oppo commits to invest 10 billion Yuan in OnePlus to fuel its AI advancement</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="650" height="400" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/MWL_oppo_color_OS_14_650.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-610481" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/MWL_oppo_color_OS_14_650.jpg 650w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/MWL_oppo_color_OS_14_650-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/MWL_oppo_color_OS_14_650-356x220.jpg 356w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><figcaption>Oppo unveiling its self-trained gen AI model in September last year</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Liu Zuohu highlighted <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/oneplus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OnePlus</a>&#8216;s remarkable growth rates, with the beginning of 2024 witnessing a notable 40% year-on-year growth. This growth trajectory aligns with OPPO&#8217;s strategic investment in OnePlus, marked by a dual-brand era announcement in 2022. With OPPO&#8217;s commitment to invest 10 billion Yuan solely in OnePlus over the next three years, the company aims to bolster OnePlus&#8217;s technological advancement, channel expansion, and service enhancement.</p>

<p>Notably, OPPO has prioritized AI as a key strategy, evidenced by the establishment of an AI center and a dedicated AI strategy conference in 2024. The company has already <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo-andesgpt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">applied to trademark its &#8220;AndesGPT&#8221;</a> and &#8220;AndesAI&#8221; for new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/artificial-intelligence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a> assistant last year. Liu Zuohu stressed that AI integration will be pivotal in shaping the future of mobile phones. Despite differing industry perspectives, particularly on the practical significance of AI in smartphones, Liu Zuohu remains steadfast in his belief in its transformative potential.</p>

<p>Responding to skepticism surrounding <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/11/samsung-may-start-charging-for-some-ai-features-of-the-galaxy-s24-starting-july-30/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI-focused smartphones</a>, Liu Zuohu drew parallels with Apple&#8217;s ventures beyond its core products, suggesting that embracing AI is an inevitable evolution. He confidently predicted that skeptics would soon follow suit within three months as the industry trend solidifies.</p>

<p>Looking ahead, Liu Zuohu reaffirmed OnePlus&#8217;s core strategy centered on product excellence and user satisfaction. He emphasized the company&#8217;s commitment to innovation, aiming to disrupt the industry with each product release. Liu Zuohu stressed that while performance growth is a significant outcome, the primary focus remains on delivering exceptional products that resonate with consumers.</p>

<p>It has been revealed that Lu Taiwen, a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> official, has expressed disapproval of the name &#8220;AI Phone&#8221; for the upcoming Galaxy S24 series. Lu Taiwen has reportedly instructed employees to propose alternative names that can better capture the essence and AI capabilities of Samsung&#8217;s upcoming flagship. The upcoming series consists of three models &#8211; the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s24-ultra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy S24</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s24-plus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy S24 Plus</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s24-ultra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy S24 Ultra</a>. </p>

<h2>&#8220;AI Phone&#8221; is considered incapable of fully depicting the AI capabilities of the Galaxy S24 series</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="700" height="400" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2c836ff0-960a-4222-b085-1139f6a160d3.webp?x44794" alt="Galaxy S24 Ultra" class="wp-image-590269" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2c836ff0-960a-4222-b085-1139f6a160d3.webp 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2c836ff0-960a-4222-b085-1139f6a160d3-300x171.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2c836ff0-960a-4222-b085-1139f6a160d3-696x398.webp 696w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure></div>

<p>Media speculation suggests two primary concerns about the mane &#8220;<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/11/27/the-galaxy-s24-will-be-an-ai-phone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI Phone</a>&#8220;. Firstly, it is believed that the term might fall short of fully conveying the relevant technological advancements and user experience associated with the Galaxy S24 series. Secondly, there are concerns about the pronunciation of &#8220;AI Phone,&#8221; which bears a resemblance to &#8220;iPhone,&#8221;. However, the exact reasons behind Lu Taiwen&#8217;s opposition to &#8220;AI Phone&#8221; remain undisclosed.</p>

<p>Back in November, it was reported that Samsung had filed trademark applications for names like &#8220;AI Phone&#8221; and &#8220;AI Smartphone&#8221; to underscore its commitment to artificial intelligence. This move aligns with Samsung&#8217;s broader strategy of emphasizing AI in its next-generation flagship smartphones.</p>

<p>The Galaxy S24 has already been acknowledged as an AI-powered phone, with Samsung signaling its intent to prioritize artificial intelligence in the new flagship. The company officially announced the introduction of Galaxy AI, integrating device-side AI models into its upcoming Galaxy phones.</p>

<p>One of the anticipated features is the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/11/09/galaxy-ai-likely-to-debut-on-galaxy-s24-series-ai-live-translate-call-feature-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI Live Translate Call</a>, offering personalized translation services for users owning the latest Galaxy AI phones. Notably, this feature eliminates the need for third-party translation apps, seamlessly providing real-time audio and text translations during phone calls.</p>

<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely believed to be the future, for better or worse. The omnipotent technology has the potential to make our lives easier, so much so that some of us may no longer need to work (although that’s not exactly a good thing). You&#8217;ve probably seen news of companies integrating AI into all sorts of things, from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/07/04/urtopia-fusion-e-bike-unveiled-chatgpt/">e-bikes </a>to self-driving cars. And <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo">Lenovo</a> CEO predicts we&#8217;ll soon be seeing AI phones and computers.</p>

<h2>Lenovo to invest large sums on AI</h2>

<p>Lenovo’s CEO Yang Yuanqing said the development of artificial intelligence, especially the rapid growth of artificial intelligence chips, will promote the upgrade of intelligent devices. He believes that there will not be much impact this year, but it will have a revolutionary impact next year. This will promote the upgrade and replacement of computers, and he expects to see AI phones and computers next year.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="662" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature-1024x662.webp?x44794" alt="Lenovo feature" class="wp-image-559251" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature-1024x662.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature-300x194.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature-768x497.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature-696x450.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature-1068x691.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature-649x420.webp 649w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lenovo-feature.webp 1268w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>This comes after Lenovo Group yesterday announced its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/17/lenovo-sees-sharp-dip-in-revenue-gears-up-for-ai-driven-innovation-and-non-pc-ventures/">first-quarter earnings</a> for the 2023/24 fiscal year, which ended on June 30, 2023. Revenue for the quarter stood up at 903 billion Yuan, and net profit was 13.3 billion Yuan.</p>

<p>In a letter to employees following the release of the earnings report, Yang Yuanqing announced that the company will invest an additional 70 billion yuan over the next three years to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence technologies and applications around the world.</p>

<p>It appears Lenovo is looking to move beyond its traditional PC business and become a more diversified technology provider. AI could be the key technology that will help the Chinese company to achieve this goal.</p>

<p>Lenovo seems to be a little late in joining the AI bandwagon. Other major technology companies, such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, are already making significant investments and progress in this area.</p>
