Apple’s AirPods Max was released in December 2020. These wireless headphones came with a noise cancellation feature and a sturdy metal build. The company will most likely launch its successor in the future. Earlier, we reported that according to posts by various AirPods Max users, the device seems to have been suffering from condensation, which may be damaging their device.

Upon removing the headphones’ earcups, users notice water building inside them, raising the question of whether it will damage the headsets. The company has not yet publicly acknowledged the issue.

As per the report by 404media, a class-action lawsuit regarding this issue has been filed in California, and affected consumers have been talking to the brand about a settlement. Several people are facing this problem and have reported that their headsets are losing their noise cancellation feature, and that they hear a buzzing noise.

The plaintiff has been engaged in negotiations with Apple for several months in an attempt to reach a settlement. Apple’s legal representatives are not contesting the presence of condensation within the AirPods. However, they note, “Unlike other over-ear headphones, these headphones are magnetic and removable, making any moisture retained from body heat around the ear more noticeable to users when they remove the ear cups.”

Consumers are still concerned about buying AirPods Max (which retail for over $500 worldwide!) and whether they will face a similar issue with condensation. We will have to wait for Apple to make an official statement regarding the issue, clarifying what caused these people’s headphones to malfunction.

Apple launched the AirPods Max recently as its first wireless headphone. The headphones have since gone on sale but the reviews have not been without any bloat. Some users have complained of condensation build-up inside the headphones. It is reported that water collected inside one user’s AirPods Max ear cups after using the device for an extended period. Condensation is not uncommon with such devices although the metal ear cups, coupled with their tight fit might be some of the reasons for the increased amount of water.

The AirPods Max was unveiled earlier this month. It’s one of the high-end headphones available in the market and sells for $549. It enjoyed rave reviews at its launch for its top-end design and quality, which now comes under scrutiny with this observed flaw. The metal ear cups may be a remote cause of this buildup of water droplets after long use.
The replaceable ear pads provide ear comfort and enable noise cancellation by forming a seal around the cups. It is likely that it can trap moisture, possibly after long use and under certain circumstances.

Several users have been sharing their experience on Twitter, Reddit and other platforms, stressing that the headphones begin to malfunction until the moisture disappears. Some users even provided photos of their headphones with visible signs of moisture on it.
Water condensation, however, is not unique to the AirPods Max, and condensation after extended use is not uncommon.

Much has been written about this problem but a logical explanation is that moisture builds up as a result of sweat from the ear, as the ear cushions trap air and heat, causing a build-up of moisture observed in the ear cups. A company, EarHugz has even produced sweat-resistant headphone covers as a solution to the problem.

It is therefore advisable to periodically remove the headphones and wipe the ear cups when wearing AirPods Max for extended periods or when exercising. To do this, pop out the cushions and wipe dry the metal interiors with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, as advised by Apple.
