AMD Radeon PRO W7000 Series of Workstation GPUs Launched with RDNA 3 architecture

AMD has just announced its latest generation of professional series of graphics card. The new GPUs are from the new family of Radeon PRO W7000 series, which feature the company’s latest RDNA 3 architecture. So here are all the details.

The popular American graphics card makers launched the new cards for professionals and promises to offer higher performance with better value over its predecessors. The new workstation GPUs also feature the company’s proprietary chiplet design for improved performance and power efficiency. It also comes with support AMD Radiance Display Engine as well. The new cards include the new Radeon PRO W7900 and Radeon PRO W7800 graphics cards. The former is the flagship model and offers top end performance for extreme tasks, while the latter is still capable of handling intensive tasks.

AMD’s Radeon PRO W7900 features 48GB of GDDR6 VRAM, offers 61 FLOPS (FP32) of performance, and offers 1.5x times higher geomean performance on SPECviewperf 2020. On the other hand the Radeon PRO W7800 features 32GB of GDDR6 VRAM and offers 45 TFLOPS (FP32) of performance. Talking about some of their notable features, the new cards are based on the brand’s RDNA 3 architecture, which promises 50 percent higher ray tracing performance and better optimization for rendering, video edition, and more thanks to better optimization for AEC, D&M, and M&E based workloads.

Furthermore, the new chiplet design is based on the 5nm Graphics Compute Die along with six 6nm Memory Cache Die (MCD). Other notable features include, support for DisplayPort 2.1, AV1 Encone/Decode, Optimized Driver Performance promised by the company, dedicated AI acceleration and second gen ray tracing technology. The AMD Radeon PRO W7000 series of workstation GPUs start from 2,499 US Dollars for the W7800 model, while the W7900 GPU costs 3,999 US Dollars. The cards will go on sale starting in the second quarter of this year.

AMD quietly releases RDNA 2 in budget laptops

AMD had announced its latest lineup of mobile chips from its Ryzen 7000 series (Mendocino) of mobile processors. Now, the company has even quietly released its RDNA 2 powered graphics on certain budget laptops that were recently launched.

For those unaware, the RDNA 2 graphics is being offered on the “everyday” laptop, which combines the last gen Zen 2 CPU cores and RDNA 2. The RDNA 2 architecture is the platform that powers some very capable hardware like the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and Series S. Now, the graphics technology is arriving on some affordable notebook models too. The chipmaker giant’s new Ryzen 7000 series with the RDNA 2 was only announced on some Acer Aspire 3 series laptops.

But now, the latest and greatest mobile CPU and GPU combination are also making its way to Lenovo’s laptops as well. It is being offered on the Ideapad 1 and it features the Ryzen 5 7520U, the Ryzen 3 7320U, and the Athlon Gold 7220U. Based on the official website, Lenovo has yet to offer these Mendocino powered laptops in the US market, but these were found on other regions like the South Korea and even Hong Kong.

While these RDNA 2 powered laptops won’t offer top notch gaming performance due to their configuration, but these would still make these notebooks capable of running most competitive titles. It is also an indication that a much wider roll out will begin soon as well.

AMD Radeon RX 6000 GPU prices are set to rise by 10%

Graphic cards are scarce in the market due to the global chip shortage and the crypto-mining boom. And the available cards are selling at twice or thrice the MSRP thanks to scalpers creating an artificial shortage. Amid all this, AMD might bring more bad news for gamers looking to get their hands on a GPU this holiday season.

According to a new report by the Boardchannels form (via), AMD has notified AIB partners and all brands around the world that the entire RX6000 series GPUs will receive a price increase of 10%. The report claims that pricing is set to increase by $20 to $40, depending on the chip in question. The new pricing is likely to take effect with the next shipment of GPUs to AMD’s partners.

The recent TSMC wafer cost increase is said to be the reason behind AMD’s decision. AMD has not commented on the potential price increase, and while the market price has risen 9 percent recently, the further price increase as reported here has yet to take place.

An interesting thing worth noting is that no increase in the CPU prices has been announced by AMD, although the company uses TSMC’s wafers to produce them. However, this might also change in the future.

For now, we advise PC gamers to try their hands-on consoles like the PS5 or the Xbox series X, as the ongoing chip shortage is predicted to go on for the better part of next year.

Samsung Exynos chip with AMD GPU outperforms iPhone 12 Pro Max in graphical test

While Samsung had announced that it is working on a flagship Exynos series chipset with AMD GPU earlier this year, the company didn’t reveal any specifics regarding the processor or its capabilities. But now, a new report has suggested that this upcoming chip could outperform the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max in graphical performance.

According to a tweet from a known tipster IceUniverse, the South Korean tech giant is apparently testing an Exynos chipset with a Radeon GPU and Cortex A77 CPU cores. The tipster shared a screenshot of the 3DMark graphics benchmarking app, in which, an Exynos processor with AMD GPU was spotted scoring 8,134 points in the Wild Life test that had an average of 50fps. This score beats the iPhone 12 Pro Max that sported the Apple A14 Bionic chipset, which scores around 7,442 points with an average frame rate of 40 fps.

At the moment, these benchmark scores appear to be early tests. So, we have no idea regarding the thermal performance of this chipset during these tests and how it performs under heavy load. Although, this is quite notable considering an Android handset has outperformed the top end Apple iPhone. The Samsung chip in question is rumored to be the Exynos 2200, which might even be able to offer better performance since it is expected to arrive with ARM Cortex X2 and Cortex A710 CPU cores, which are newer and faster than the Cortex A77.

For those unaware, the upcoming Exynos chipset will feature Radeon GPU that is based on AMD’s latest mobile RDNA2 architecture. Keep in mind, even if this chipset actually is the upcoming chipset, good synthetic benchmarks do not always translate to better graphical performance in real games. So stay tuned for more updates.

AMD announces Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs, features USB-C for “modern VR experience”

AMD has just announced its latest Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. The new lineup is the company’s Big Navi GPUs that are based on the new RDNA 2 architecture and arrive at very competitive prices in comparison to its rival, Nvidia.

The new Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards are the Team Red equivalent of Team Green’s RTX 3000 series GPUs in the current generation of PC gaming. AMD unveiled the Radeon RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and the 6900 XT. The first two GPUs will be launched in November while the high end flagship card will launch in December. Notably, the new cards also feature a new USB Type C port to “power head-mounted displays with just one cable for a modern VR experience.”

Each of the new cards features ‘Infinity Cash,’ which is a 128MB of memory directly on the GPU die. This combined with the 16GB GDDR6 VRAM increases “effective bandwidth” by up to 3.25 times compared to the same amount of memory without the cache. Furthermore, for owners of the Radeon 6000 series GPU and Rzyen 5000 series CPUs, AMD has also unveiled Smart Access Memory.

This feature essentially allows the CPU to access more of the GPUs memory, which results in a slight boost in performance. While it is not groundbreaking, it is still a step in the right direction for the company that is finally leveraging the fact that it is the only company that makes both high end GPUs and CPUs.

One of the major inclusions in the latest generation of GPUs from AMD is also the addition of hardware accelerated ray-tracing support that is based on the DirectX 12 Ultimate implementation. Another focus of the company this time around was VR support, with its new cards featuring a USB-C port for VR in particular. The new RX 6000 GPUs support the VirtualLink standard, which was designed to provide a VR headset with data and power through a single port.

Samsung and AMD announce partnership on mobile GPU

Samsung‘s Exynos processors use ARM’s Mali GPU but it is not as powerful as Qualcomm‘s own Adreno GPU or even Apple‘s new GPUs since it ditched PowerVR GPUs. However, that may change as Samsung Exynos and AMD have announced a multi-year partnership that will see Samsung license AMD’s Radeon graphics technologies for use in mobile applications including smartphones.

The partnership will see Samsung use ultra-low power high-performance mobile graphics IP based on AMD Radeon graphics technologies for use in its devices. Samsung will pay AMD technology license fees and royalties for the use of its technologies.

The announcement was made yesterday by both companies and it has got everyone pretty excited about the next generation Exynos chipsets.

Talking about the partnership, Inyup Kang, president of Samsung Electronics’s System LSI business said: “We look forward to working with AMD to accelerate innovations in mobile graphics technologies that will help take future mobile computing to the next level.” He also said the partnership will allow them to bring “disruptive changes in technology” and “groundbreaking graphics products and solutions for tomorrow’s mobile applications”.

The partnership is not only a win for Samsung but also for AMD as its Radeon graphics user base will now grow beyond PCs, game consoles, cloud, and HPC markets to include the mobile (phone) market.

There is no info on when we will see the first chipset based on the partnership but we expect the next Exynos flagship processor that will power the Galaxy S11 series to be the first.
