Acer is one of the many companies that tried selling smartphones but did not succeed. The company had exited the market about half a decade ago. Hence, it is surprising to learn that a new Acer-branded phone is available for purchase in Mexico.

According to PlayfulDroid, a new Acer smartphone dubbed Sospiro A60 is up for sale in Mexico. It is being sold by carrier Telcel for MXN 1,599 ($80). The device looks like an ODM product.

The handset comes in a single black color option with green accents. It sure is a head-turner with this color combination. But unfortunately, the specs are entry-level, which is fine for the asking price.

The phone sports a 6-inch display (LCD) with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels (HD+) and an 18:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by a Unisoc SC7731E chipset paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. It boots Android 11 Go Edition.

There’s an 8MP (wide) + 2MP (depth) dual-camera system on the rear and another 8MP front-facing camera. LED flashlights are present on both sides.

Other features include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a MicroSD card slot (up to 64GB), a 3.5mm headphone jack, a MicroUSB port, single-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, and a 3,000mAh battery.

Last but not least, the Acer Sospiro A60 measures 162 x 77 x 9.3mm in dimensions and weighs 195g.

It features a 6.5-inch HD+ display that offers a screen resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels with an aspect ratio of 20:9. Under the hood, the device is powered by the Unisoc SC9863A octa-core processor, coupled with PowerVR GE8322 GPU.

The smartphone is running the Android 11 Go Edition operating system out-of-the-box and the company has promised to offer quarterly security updates for two years. Interestingly, there are two battery options — 5,050mAh and 4,000mAh battery.

On the other hand, the Nokia C21 features the same 6.5-inch HD+ 20:9 display with a screen resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels. It also has a metal frame but the company has dropped the IP ratings.

Under the hood, this one too comes powered by the Unisoc SC9863A processor but the memory options are limited to 2GB RAM or 3GB RAM and 32GB or 64GB internal storage. It also has a microSD card slot for expanding the storage capacity.

The phone has an 8-megapixel camera sensor on the back and a 5-megapixel snapper on the front side. It runs the Android 11 Go Edition operating system with a promise of getting security updates for two years and the device is powered by a 3,000mAh battery.

HMD Global announced the Nokia 1.3 in March 2020. It is an entry-level smartphone with modest specs. The handset debuted with Android 10 Go Edition. Now, nearly one and a half years after its release, the phone has started receiving Android 11 Go Edition update.

According to the official announcement post (via GSMArena) on Nokia Phones Community, the Android 11 Go Edition update for the Nokia 1.3 is currently only available for users in Australia. The post states that the software build should be rolled out to 100% of the units by July 24, which happens to be today.

Unfortunately, HMD Global does not state when the remaining regions will be getting the update. However, it does say that the second wave will include all the regions. This means whenever the next wave rollout begins, the update should be available in all other markets.

As mentioned in the beginning, the Nokia 1.3 is an entry-level smartphone from the Finnish company. It features a 5.71-inch HD+ display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 chipset, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, single/dual-SIM, 4G, single-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, MicroUSB port, and a 3,000mAh removable battery.

Android 11 Go Edition is likely the first and the last major software update for this handset. But it should receive security updates for some time.

Smartphones with 2GB or less RAM run Android Go Edition. This version of Google’s operating system is designed for devices with low-end hardware. Hence, the Nokia 1 Plus was released with this version of Android.

The post Nokia 1 Plus receives Android 11 Go Edition update appeared first on Gizmochina.

Just a few days after announcing Android 11 stable, Google has announced Android 11 Go Edition for devices with 2GB of RAM and less. The new version of Android for entry-level devices brings improvements in performance and new privacy features.

Google says Android 11 Go Edition will bring a 20% increase in app launch time over Android 10 Go Edition. Android Go devices will also get the same security and privacy features available on those running Android 11 such as one-time permission and permission auto-reset for apps that have been granted permissions before but have not been used in a while.

Android 11 Go Edition now brings support for gesture-navigation, seeing as entry-level phones now sport large displays. For example, the Redmi 9A has a 6.53-inch display. Another feature that is available is Conversations which is under the notification shade. Users will be able to manage and reply to messages easily from there.

Google has raised the support of Android 11 Go to devices with up to 2GB of RAM from the previous limit of 1.5GB. The additional RAM is said to provide up to 900MB of extra storage space for the phones and up to an additional 270MB of free memory which means you can run more apps and games at the same time.

Android 11 Go Edition will be available starting next month. While only a few manufacturers (read HMD Global) will only update their devices to the new version, the new rule that says all new devices with 2GB RAM or less launching from next quarter onwards should launch with Android Go should mean we will see some new Android 11 Go Edition phones hit the markets soon.

The post Android 11 Go Edition arrives for devices with 2GB of RAM and less appeared first on Gizmochina.

Google’s Android Go operating system is designed for phones with 1GB of RAM or less. However, there are a few phones with 2GB of RAM that also run Android Go such as the Wiko Y80. Beginning next quarter, Google says all phones with 2GB RAM or less must launch as Android Go devices.

The info comes from a leaked copy of Google’s Android 11 Go Edition Device Configuration Guide that has an April 24, 2020 date according to XDA Developers. The memo reveals that Google is making Android Go a requirement for new devices with 2GB RAM or less launching as from next quarter. Below are the requirements as stated by the memo:

• Beginning with Android 11, devices with 512MB RAM (including upgrades) are not qualified for preloading GMS.
• All new PRODUCTS launching with Android 11, if they have 2GB RAM or less, MUST return true for ActivityManager.isLowRamDevice() API, and launch as an Android Go device.
• Starting in Q4 2020, all new PRODUCTS launching with Android 10, if they have 2GB RAM or less, MUST return true for ActivityManager.isLowRamDevice() API, and launch as an Android Go device.
• Previously launched 2GB RAM devices in standard GMS configuration SHOULD NOT convert to Android Go configuration via MRs or letter upgrades. They will remain standard Android.

As stated above, Google is saying that it will now be a requirement for devices that will launch with Android 10 or Android 11 with 2GB RAM or less to launch as Android Go.

EDITOR’S PICK: Redmi’s product director hints the company is considering small-screen phones

Based on this new development, we should see Android Go phones with better performance since the limit has now been raised to 2GB RAM. However, manufacturers may decide not to launch phones with RAM lower than 3GB rather than adopt Android Go so that they can keep their custom UI.

Take for example Xiaomi whose only Android Go phone is the Redmi Go. If it were to adhere to this requirement, it will mean the successors to its entry-level devices such as Redmi 9A and the Redmi 9C will have to run Android Go and not standard Android with MIUI on top. That seems unlikely seeing as the Redmi Go didn’t get a successor and Xiaomi won’t ship one of its best selling series without MIUI.

Another question that this new requirement brings up is “What happens in cases where a phone has other RAM variants?”. Manufacturers will surely not announce a 2GB RAM version of the phone running Android Go while the 3GB RAM version runs standard Android. Time will surely tell if manufacturers adhere to these new rules or find a way to circumvent them.
