<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/">Google</a> just pulled the plug on security updates for Android 12 and 12L as of March 31, 2025. If you’re still using a phone or tablet running these versions, this is a big deal. A ton of Android users are in the same boat, and this move could make your device more vulnerable to security threats going forward. Let’s break it down.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs-1024x538.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-682295" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs-300x158.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs-768x403.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs-696x365.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs-1068x561.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs-800x420.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/og-android-12-its-new-features-and-APIs.jpg 1333w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2>Google recently released its Android Security Bulletin for April 2025</h2>

<p>Google&#8217;s Android Security Bulletin for April 2025 dropped a hint: no more security patches for Android 12 or 12L. These versions hit the scene <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/10/20/android-12-stable-pixel-smartphone-update/">back on October 2021</a>, and March 2022, respectively. Google usually keeps older Android versions secure with backported patches for about 3.5 years, so this cutoff tracks with their playbook. Still, it’s a bummer since data shows most Android folks are still using Android 12 or older.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="815" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Android-Security-Bulletin-for-April-2025-1000w-815h.jpg.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-682292" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Android-Security-Bulletin-for-April-2025-1000w-815h.jpg.webp 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Android-Security-Bulletin-for-April-2025-1000w-815h.jpg-300x245.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Android-Security-Bulletin-for-April-2025-1000w-815h.jpg-768x626.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Android-Security-Bulletin-for-April-2025-1000w-815h.jpg-696x567.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Android-Security-Bulletin-for-April-2025-1000w-815h.jpg-515x420.webp 515w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>Check out the table from the bulletin—it’s clear Android 12 and 12L are off the support list. Google’s been quiet about it, but word is the March 2025 bulletin was the last one to include patches for these versions. Most of the Android smartphone makers are likely to leave these devices out in the cold.</p>

<p>If your device is still on Android 12 or 12L, it’s probably time to think about an upgrade. Your phone might still get updates for Google apps or certain system modules, but the core Android OS is on its own now. Google also stopped approving new Android 12 builds a while back, so don’t expect any big updates. You could repurpose your old device as a security cam or a music player for sure. But as your main phone that stores important documents, and maybe your financial details? Probably not the safest bet. If you can’t upgrade yet, just be extra careful, as security risks are only going to increase from this point.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/microsoft/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Microsoft </a>has finally began rolling out the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-12l/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Android 12L</a> update for its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/surface-duo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Surface Duo</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/microsoft-surface-duo-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Surface Duo 2 </a>models. The devices have started receiving the major software upgrade, which also brings a hint of design philosophy inspired by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/windows-11/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Windows 11</a>.</p>

<p>For those unaware, the Android 12L variant of the Android operating system is special since it is built specifically for larger screened devices like the Surface Duo series or other foldable smartphones. The Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 both feature a dual display design, so unlike a foldable phone, they do not feature a crease or have flexible screens that bend from a hinge mechanism. Although, one can rotate the two displays at angles ranging from 0 degrees to 360 degrees. This essentially makes the Duo models akin to an actual book.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11-1024x576.webp?x10805" alt="Microsoft" class="wp-image-492124" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Android-12L-surfaces-for-the-Surface-Duo-and-Surface-Duo-2-with-a-hint-of-Windows-11.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Now, the American tech giant has announced the new update for the two Surface Duo models on its official <em><a href="https://blogs.windows.com/devices/2022/10/24/surface-duo-update-brings-familiarity-with-windows-11-and-android-12l-improvements/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blog</a></em>. With the Android 12L update, the company also offers Surface Duo users the dynamic theming engine. This basically lets you change the color across the system based on the color of the main wallpaper that is chosen by the user. Furthermore, four new wallpapers will also be rolled out in the update, which will align with the new Windows 11 desktop backgrounds to &#8220;bring the vibrancy of Windows to Android.&#8221;</p>

<p>Microsoft also added that the Android 12L update will seek to improve the user experience through a more responsive and inclusive experience that also brings more cutomizability options as well. This includes a new refreshed UI that can dynamically adapt to users&#8217; wallpaper, new fluid animations, and additional accessibility tools. The new update also offers updated conversations and Photo widgets as well as a privacy dashboard, which can track apps that use your camera, microphone, and location access over a 24 hour period. So for those interested, you can install the Android 12 update on your Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 by going to <em>Settings</em> &gt; <em>System</em> &gt; <em>System update.</em></p>

<p>Now, these new features are also coming to the previous gen Galaxy foldable like the Z Fold 3, Z Fold 2, and Z Fold as well as the Z Flip 3, Z Flip 2, and the Z Flip via the OneUI 4.1.1 update based on Android 12L.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-373489 " src="https://images.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/One_UI_4.1.1_main1F.gif" alt="" width="574" height="478" /></p>
<p>The update brings the convenient Taskbar feature to all the large screen foldable. It is basically a PC-like taskbar at the bottom center of the display that everything you need within easy reach.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-373490 " src="https://images.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/One_UI_4.1.1_main2F.gif" alt="" width="570" height="475" /></p>
<p>You can also drag and drop any app you want to open from the Taskbar on top of an already open app, which will result in the app opening in a split view. The update also includes Dual Preview, which lets the subject see the shot simultaneously on the cover screen.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-373493 " src="https://images.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/One_UI_4.1.1_Quick-Settings.gif" alt="" width="574" height="478" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>On the Galaxy Z Flip series, Quick Shot allows you to see the preview and capture images in their true ratio on the cover screen. The Galaxy Z Flip series gets new Cover Screen features with One UI 4.1.1, allowing you to accomplish more without unlocking your phone. Call a friend, return missed calls, and respond to texts using voice-to-text and emoticons from the Cover Screen. Among the new Quick Setting, options are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, airplane mode, and a flashlight.</p>
<p>The update also includes the August 1 security patch. The update has started rolling out as of yesterday for all the users across the world. It is expected to arrive on all Samsung foldables in the coming days.</p>

Now, the company is rolling it out to its tablets.</p>
<p>The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series tablets have become the first tablet from the South Korean giant to receive the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-12l">Android 12L</a> software update with One UI 4.1.1.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-442560 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra" width="1200" height="799" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra-1068x711.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S8-Ultra-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>The update is currently being rolled out to Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S8+, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-tab-s8-ultra">Tab S8 Ultra</a> in Europe. Both the versions of the tablet &#8212; cellular and Wi-Fi are eligible for this new update that is being rolled out.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.sammobile.com/news/galaxy-tab-s8-android-12l-update-one-ui-4-1-1-better-multitasking/">report from <em>SamMobile</em></a> reveals that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 comes with firmware version X70xBXXU2AVH2, while the Galaxy Tab S8+ model is getting the update with firmware version X80xBXXU2AVH5. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is getting the update with firmware version X90xBXXU2AVH2.</p>
<p>Along with the new version of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android">Android</a>, the update also comes with the August 2022 security patch. The size of the update is also pretty large at 2.3GB, which means you will need about 2.5GB of free storage on the device.</p>
<p>Android 12L was announced at the Android Developer Summit last year, which brings an optimized user interface for large-screen devices such as tablets, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-smartphone">foldable</a>, and Chrome OS devices. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a> says it has refined the UI to make Android more beautiful and easier to use on screens larger than 600sp.</p>

<p>For those unaware, the South Korean tech giant&#8217;s latest foldable smartphones made a major shift to Android 12L OS. This version of Android was made by Google specifically with foldable handsets in mind, along with tablets and Chrome OS devices as well. Through this, the company was able to offer a new Taskbar feature on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which helped in improving the multi tasking functionality and navigation options on the new device.</p>
<p>But according to a tweet from <a href="https://twitter.com/TheGalox_/status/1558364723569213440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1558364723569213440%7Ctwgr%5E52bc3c66661af61fe4b26b8196131d3ce2f68285%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gsmarena.com%2Folder_galaxy_fold_devices_rumored_to_get_the_new_z_fold4_taskbar-news-55410.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>@TheGalox_</em></a>, the brand is also planning on introducing this feature to older Galaxy Z Fold series foldable smartphones as well. Interestingly, this also means that Samsung will be updating all or at least the more recent Fold phone models to the Android &#8220;L&#8221; branch as well. In other words, they will get some of the other new changes in the UI.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, it is still unclear whether the new One UI 4.1.1 build is related to the new Android 12L OS. Although, its clear that these features are a great addition to the new foldable smartphones. So stay tuned for more updates regarding this matter.</p>

<p>For those unaware, Pixel 6 users have been facing troubles with Wi-Fi, like not being able to turn it on, in the first half of this month. The issue began appearing after people updated their devices to the second February update that was released previously. And now, the brand has stated that they are working on a fix, and users can see a software update rolling out sometime in March 2022.</p>
<p>Additionally, the phones are also gaining support for Verizon’s 5G C-Band network, which gives the devices access to the full power of the 5G Ultra-Wideband (UEB). However, this is a feature that’s specific for US users only.</p>

But among these additions, there&#8217;s also seems to be a fix for a long-standing Widevine certification bug troubling Pixel owners for a while.</p>
<p>Multiple Redditors on the Google Pixel subreddit <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/t90txt/march_update_fixed_widevine_l3_issue/">acknowledged</a> that the March update fixed the Widevine issues that prevented HD streaming on OTT platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime for them (via <a href="https://www.androidpolice.com/android-12l-feature-drop-update-fixes-widevine-l3-issue-for-many/">Android Police</a>).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-448988 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/google-pixel-3-series-featured.png?x10805" alt="google pixel 3 series featured" width="1000" height="505" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/google-pixel-3-series-featured.png 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/google-pixel-3-series-featured-300x152.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/google-pixel-3-series-featured-768x388.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/google-pixel-3-series-featured-696x351.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/google-pixel-3-series-featured-832x420.png 832w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>For those unaware, users have been complaining about the Widevine on their Pixel devices downgrading from L1 to L3 for over a year now. When L1, streaming services are allowed to play content on 1080p, but when downgraded to L3, the max you get is 480p. Therefore, in order for a device to stream at 1080p, L1 certification is a necessity. The whole system has been put in place to prevent piracy.</p>
<p>When the Widevine issue first hit, Google acknowledged it saying they were working on a fix. But the fix never really rolled out, leaving Pixel owners stuck with an ugly 480p streaming resolution &#8212; something that now appears to be changing with the Android 12L update.</p>
<p>Still, there are some who continue to see Widevine L3 even after updating Android 12L. For such users, it is recommended to factory reset the device once. While this isn&#8217;t a guaranteed fix, a few users have reported that doing so did the trick for them.</p>

<p>The information comes from a <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/android_beta/comments/sx0ukw/12l_beta_3_not_kicking_in_on_pixel_6_pro/">Reddit thread</a> on r/Android_beta (via <a href="https://www.androidpolice.com/googles-latest-pixel-6-monthly-update-has-broken-something-else-because-of-course-it-has/">Android Police</a>) where Pixel 6 owners inquired why their devices were not receiving the latest beta despite signing up for the program.</p>
<p>As a response, Google from its official Reddit account <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/android_beta/comments/sx0ukw/comment/hy5ftv6/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web2x&amp;context=3">stated</a> that &#8220;If you&#8217;re enrolling a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro that is on the latest February build SQ1D.220205.004, you will not receive an update to 12L Beta 3, but instead will receive the next upcoming beta build release in March as long as you keep your device enrolled.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-403573 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-1024x1024.jpg?x10805" alt="Google Pixel 6 series featured" width="696" height="696" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-1068x1068.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-420x420.jpg 420w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Pixel-6-series-featured-1920x1920.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>In other words, Pixel 6 series users will have to wait for the release of Android 12L beta 4 in order to get updated to the latest version.</p>
<p>The response can also be taken as a confirmation for a fourth beta since the official roadmap released last year showed beta release plans only until February, with an official &#8220;Final release&#8221; scheduled for some time after.</p>
<p>But if you simply can&#8217;t shake off the urge to jump aboard Android 12L beta 3, then you can try re-checking for the update for about five times after opting in. A Redditor says it worked for them so it&#8217;s worth a shot.</p>

While there have been several leaks and rumors related to this smartphone, the company has not yet officially revealed anything.</p>
<p>Now, a new beta version of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-12l">Android 12L</a> has been revealed which includes an animation that is believed to be the upcoming Google Pixel Fold smartphone. The development was first <a href="https://9to5google.com/2022/01/12/googles-pixel-foldable-tensor-oppo-find-n/">reported by <em>9to5Google</em></a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-437494 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-1.jpeg?x10805" alt="Google Pixel Foldable Smartphone Design Leak" width="895" height="499" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-1.jpeg 895w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-1-300x167.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-1-768x428.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-1-696x388.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-1-753x420.jpeg 753w" sizes="(max-width: 895px) 100vw, 895px" /></p>
<p>The animations for the SIM setup screen show a smartphone that has a larger foldable display instead of the usual single-screen design. It shows that the SIM card slot is situated at the bottom while the volume rocker keys are at the lower right side.</p>
<p>Based on the design of the smartphone shown in the animations, it appears that the Google Pixel Fold could be similar to the recently launched <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n-5g/">OPPO Find N</a> instead of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold3-5g/">Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3</a> because of the wider screen when unfolded.</p>
<p>The report mentions that the animations were added between the release of Android 12L Beta 1 and Beta 2 builds and there are also references to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/01/07/google-pixel-foldable-phone-pipit-spotted-with-key-specifications-at-geekbench/">&#8220;Pipit&#8221; codename</a> which is said to be the foldable Pixel smartphone currently in development.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-437495 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-2.jpeg?x10805" alt="Google Pixel Foldable Smartphone Design Leak" width="895" height="497" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-2.jpeg 895w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-2-300x167.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-2-768x426.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-2-696x385.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Pixel-Fold-Design-Leak-2-756x420.jpeg 756w" sizes="(max-width: 895px) 100vw, 895px" /></p>
<p>If the leaks are to be believed, then the Pixel Fold will come with a downgraded camera configuration compared to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-6/">Pixel 6</a> lineup and is also said to be powered by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-tensor">Google Tensor</a> (GS101) chipset. It is also expected to pack 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage.</p>
<p>Recently, it was reported that Google was canceling parts orders for the production of the Pixel Fold, suggesting that the device wouldn’t get launched. However, the new information surfacing online indicates the phone may be available in the market.</p>
<p>As for the pricing, reports indicate that Google&#8217;s first <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-smartphone">foldable smartphone</a> could be priced around $1,500 to $1,800 but when the company is demanding such premium pricing, it also needs to deliver a good product and cannot release a buggy device, something that the company did with the Pixel 6 series, which is having several issues.</p>

<p>Now, the technology giant has already started working on the next major release &#8212; Android 13 which is codenamed &#8220;Tiramisu.&#8221; A <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/android-13-tiramisu-exclusive-first-look/">new report from <em>XDA-Developers</em></a> sheds light on four notable changes within the build.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_432891" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-432891" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-432891 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13.jpg?x10805" alt="Android 13" width="1200" height="800" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-432891" class="wp-caption-text">Android 13 (Image Credit: XDA-Developers)</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>The four major changes or features coming to the Android 13 include App Languages, Runtime Permission for Notifications, TARE &#8212; The Android Resource Economy, and Lock Screen Clock Layout. Here are more details about them.</p>
<h3><strong>App Languages</strong></h3>
<p>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-app-language-1/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-1.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="Android 13 App Language" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-1.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-1-188x300.jpg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-1-640x1024.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-1-696x1114.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-1-263x420.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-app-language-2/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-2.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="Android 13 App Language" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-2.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-2-188x300.jpg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-2-640x1024.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-2-696x1114.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Language-2-263x420.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
</p>
<p>It appears that in Android 13, users will be able to set different languages for different applications with the help of the &#8220;App Language&#8221; settings. Currently, Android sets the language system-wide and not on an app-by-app basis.</p>
<h3><strong>Runtime Permission for Notifications</strong></h3>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a> seems to be interested in tackling the issue of notification spam and in Android 13, there&#8217;s a new permission &#8220;POST_NOTIFICATIONS&#8221; which means that notifications could become an opt-in feature. This means that users may be able to choose if they want the application to send notifications or not.</p>
<p>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-app-notifications-1/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-1.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-1.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-1-188x300.jpg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-1-640x1024.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-1-696x1114.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-1-263x420.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-app-notifications-2/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-2.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="Android 13 App Notifications" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-2.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-2-188x300.jpg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-2-640x1024.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-2-696x1114.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-App-Notifications-2-263x420.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
</p>
<p>It&#8217;s noteworthy that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> has already introduced sometime similar for notifications permission in the latest Android 12-based <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/one-ui-4">One UI 4</a>.</p>
<h3><strong>TARE</strong></h3>
<p>With Android 13, the search engine giant will lay the foundation for the &#8220;TARE&#8221; feature which is an abbreviation for &#8220;The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android">Android</a> Resource Economy.&#8221; It focuses on energy-use management on the device, with the feature working through AlarmManager and JobScheduler policies.</p>
<p>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-tare-1/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-1.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="Android 13 TARE" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-1.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-1-188x300.jpg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-1-640x1024.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-1-696x1114.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-1-263x420.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-tare-2/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-2.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="Android 13 TARE" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-2.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-2-188x300.jpg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-2-640x1024.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-2-696x1114.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-TARE-2-263x420.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
</p>
<p>The feature introduces &#8220;Android Resource Credits,&#8221; which is basically a form of currency tied to the battery level of the device. The company will award credits to apps based on how depleted the battery is, and apps can then use these credits as &#8220;payments&#8221; for the opportunity to perform tasks.</p>
<h3><strong>Lock Screen Clock Layout</strong></h3>
<p>Another user-facing change coming in the Android 13 is the ability for the users to change the layout of the lock screen clock. It will allow users to show the clock on a single line instead of a large two-line square layout. There&#8217;s also a possibility that this new feature can make its way to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-12l">Android 12L</a>.</p>
<p>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-lock-screen-clock-1/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-1.jpeg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="Android 13 Lock Screen Clock" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-1.jpeg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-1-188x300.jpeg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-1-640x1024.jpeg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-1-696x1114.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-1-263x420.jpeg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/24/android-13-features-leak-online/android-13-lock-screen-clock-2/'><img width="750" height="1200" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-2.jpeg?x10805" class="attachment-full size-full" alt="Android 13 Lock Screen Clock" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-2.jpeg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-2-188x300.jpeg 188w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-2-640x1024.jpeg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-2-696x1114.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Android-13-Lock-Screen-Clock-2-263x420.jpeg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a>
</p>
<p>These are some of the features that the team at <em>XDA-Developers</em> were able to find out but there will definitely be more features coming to the Android 13 operating system. We will get to know more about this in the coming months through leaks.</p>

To recall, Android 12 was released in October and the first Android 12L developer preview followed not long after. And now, around a couple of months later, Pixel phones all the way back to the Google Pixel 3a have received the Android 12L update in the form of Beta 1.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-421717 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured.png?x10805" alt="Android 12L featured" width="856" height="454" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured.png 856w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-300x159.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-768x407.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-696x369.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-792x420.png 792w" sizes="(max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px" /></p>
<p>There isn&#8217;t really much to test on Google Pixel phones, however, as most of the front-end changes can only be seen and felt on large screen devices (via <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/android-12l-beta-1-google-pixel-phones/">XDA</a>). The update is, after all, more of a feature-drop kind than a full-blown upgrade.</p>
<p>As for features, the update adds a new dual-pane UI for the notifications shade, settings, and lock screen. There&#8217;s even a Windows-style dedicated taskbar for better multitasking. In short, the layout of multiple system interfaces has been tweaked to take advantage of larger displays with a DPI higher than 600dp.</p>
<p>To download the Android 12L Beta 1 build for your Pixel device, simply click on one of the links below. Google has released the update for every eligible device barring the Pixel 6 series, but it shouldn&#8217;t be long before the latest Pixels get it too.</p>

<p>For those who&#8217;d rather not install the update manually, the <a href="https://developer.android.com/preview/download#flashtool">Android Flash Tool</a> can be used as an alternative installation method for the Beta build. This web-based installer comes with a GUI wizard which greatly simplifies the flashing process. But the most user-friendly installation method is still simply <a href="https://www.google.com/android/beta">enrolling your Pixel in the beta program</a> which will allow you to get an OTA officially.</p>

<p lang="en" dir="ltr">&quot;&#8230;people with automatic wallpaper switchers have found that you can actually crash a game if it happens in the background&quot; </p>
<p>A fix for this is coming in Android 12L. Background wallpaper changes won&#39;t trigger theme changes.</p>
<p>&mdash; Mishaal Rahman (@MishaalRahman) <a href="https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1460271006342340612?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 15, 2021</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google/">Google</a>&#8216;s new UI, the Material You, introduced with Android 12, is a dynamic theming engine that extracts colors from the current wallpaper and splashes it across the system UI and supported apps, giving users greater control than ever over what their phone&#8217;s software looks like. Changing the wallpaper in Android 12 results in a configuration change forcing all app activities to restart so that they use the new colors from the wallpaper for theming purposes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-390313 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Android-12-featured.jpg?x10805" alt="Android 12 featured" width="1000" height="563" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Android-12-featured.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Android-12-featured-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Android-12-featured-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Android-12-featured-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Android-12-featured-746x420.jpg 746w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The root cause of this game crashing bug was spotted to be this forced Android configuration changes. Games typically used to ignore such changes but that isn’t the case anymore with Android 12.</p>
<p>This bug, which has remained unsolved for more than 2 months, will now be addressed in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-12L/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Android 12L</a>. The Android 12L is primarily meant for foldable phones, tablets, and big display devices but will fix many bugs present in Android 12. The fix will ensure that background wallpaper changes will not trigger theme changes or force app activities to restart, preventing crashes. The OS, set to go live in early 2022, will enter beta testing from December to February.</p>

The feature picks colors from the wallpaper and splashes them across the system UI and supported apps. Codenamed &#8216;monet&#8217;, it is currently exclusive to the Pixels and Google is yet to release the source code for it, but that&#8217;s set to change quite soon.</p>
<p>Mishaal Rahman on Twitter (via XDA <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/android-12-oem-themes/">Developers</a>) shared a new code commit in Google’s Material Components library titled “Add supporting manufacturer list of dynamic colors.” It includes a list of OEMs that will support dynamic system themes. The list currently comprises OPPO, realme, OnePlus, vivo, Xiaomi, Motorola, itel, Tecno Mobile, Infinix, HMD Global, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Lenovo, Google, and Roboelectric.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">This is interesting. The source code for Monet (Android 12&#39;s wallpaper-based theme system) will be released with Android 12L, but based on this code change for the Material Components library, it looks like a bunch of OEMs are implementing dynamic color support themselves. <a href="https://t.co/Oufh9zxDnZ">https://t.co/Oufh9zxDnZ</a> <a href="https://t.co/9obGYbbMDC">pic.twitter.com/9obGYbbMDC</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Mishaal Rahman (@MishaalRahman) <a href="https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1458889821791924225?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 11, 2021</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/Google">Google</a> had earlier confirmed that the code for monet will be uploaded to AOSP sometime after the release of Android 12. And it has now been confirmed that this will be happening with the release of Android 12L in early 2022.</p>
<p>However, it had been unclear if any manufacturer besides Google would be interested in supporting dynamic themes, considering most have their own Android skins with various design languages. While these OEMs don&#8217;t seem to have plans of implementing monet, they do seem to be working on their own implementations entirely.</p>
<p>As such, the color palettes generated from your wallpaper will likely be different from Google&#8217;s monet.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-370236 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Android-12-Conversations-2-473x1024.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="473" height="1024" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Android-12-Conversations-2-473x1024.jpg 473w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Android-12-Conversations-2-139x300.jpg 139w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Android-12-Conversations-2-194x420.jpg 194w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Android-12-Conversations-2.jpg 554w" sizes="(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px" /></p>
<p>A great example of this is the Android 12 beta for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/11/08/coloros-12-november-rollout-plan-is-here-oppo-find-x3-pro-to-get-it-this-month/">OPPO Find X3 Pro</a> which has its own implementation of dynamic theming and thus creates its own unique palettes. This could also mean that OPPO won&#8217;t be making use of the monet engine when it goes live at all, and instead stick to using its own dynamic themes engine.</p>
<p>Oddly, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung">Samsung</a> is missing from the supported manufacturers list even though One UI 4 does come with a dynamic color feature. The reason for this could be Samsung not planning to plug into the Material Components library at all. The downside to this will be that only the supported system apps will be able to benefit from Samsung&#8217;s theming solution and third-party apps will be held back.</p>
<p>However, it isn&#8217;t unlikely for more OEMs to get added to the list so Samsung still has time.</p>

While <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a> has been tuning Android to support foldables, today&#8217;s announcement of Android 12L marks the tech giant&#8217;s major stride towards designing Android for large screen devices.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-421717" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured.png?x10805" alt="Android 12L featured" width="856" height="454" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured.png 856w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-300x159.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-768x407.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-696x369.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-featured-792x420.png 792w" sizes="(max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px" /></p>
<p>Android 12L was announced today at the Android Developer Summit as a “feature drop” that brings an optimized user interface for large screen devices such as tablets, foldable, and Chrome OS devices. Google says it has refined the UI to make Android more beautiful and easier to use on screens larger than 600sp.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-421718" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen.png?x10805" alt="Android 12L split screen" width="1600" height="1282" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen.png 1600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen-300x240.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen-768x615.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen-1024x820.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen-696x558.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen-1068x856.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Android-12L-split-screen-524x420.png 524w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>Below are some of the visual changes that Android 12L brings:</p>
<ul>
<li>A Google search bar at the top</li>
<li>A six-button power menu that includes bug report and screenshot</li>
<li>Two-column lockscreen</li>
<li>A dual-pane interface for the settings menu</li>
<li>A redesigned overview interface that shows the current app in almost full-screen while other apps are smaller</li>
<li>Automatic enabling of all apps to enter split-screen mode even if the apps are not resizeable</li>
<li>Ability for manufacturers to easily customize letterboxing</li>
<li>A taskbar for large screen devices to make app switching seamless</li>
</ul>

<p><img src="https://developer.android.com/about/versions/12/images/12L-resizable-emulator.gif" alt="" /></p>
<p>Google has said that Android 12L will be released early next year with the next wave of Android 12 tablets and foldables. However, it will be available today for developers while a developer preview will be released soon for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/09/08/lenovo-p12-pro-5g-lenovo-tab-p11-5g-launched-specifications-features-price/">Lenovo P12 Pro</a>. A beta version will also be released for Pixel phones in December.</p>
