The Nokia 2 is an entry-level phone that was released by HMD Global Oy in 2017. The phone has only 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage just like a lot of Android Go devices but it launched before the Android Go platform kicked off and unfortunately, it isn’t possible to migrate it to Android Go.

Juho Sarvikas, the chief product officer for HMD Global revealed last month that the update to Android Oreo will eventually arrive but there will be a trade-off on snappiness due to the phone’s entry-level specs.

The manufacturer has also revealed that the update will not be available to all users but just those whose mobile networks have approved the update. The official statement from HMD Global also said some applications may not be supported. The list of countries and operators where the update will not be available are as follows:

Countries: Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland (Except Vodafone Ireland), Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Peru, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and Uruguay.

Operators: Movistar Ecuador, Tigo Guatemala, Greece Cosmot, Telekom Romania, DiGI RO, Orange Romania, and Swisscom.

So, it is sort of good news for Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus users in the U.S as Motorola has published on its website, release notes which show that the two models are both currently receiving an update to Android 8.1 Oreo. The Moto G5 and G5 Plus were both launched in March last year with Android 7.1 Nougat OS. This is also coming barely two weeks after the Moto G5S started receiving Android Oreo in the U.S.

According to the release details, the build of Android brings with it “new multitasking features, more efficient notification controls and improved data saver, battery features, new power menu UI and Bluetooth improvements.” In addition to the new features Android 8.1 Oreo brings to the table, the update carries the June 1st Android security update and improvements that exterminate bugs and enhance the stability of both models.

Already, the tech giant is already pushing the updates via OTA to eligible models. If you reside in the U.S, you really don’t have to wait for a notification to arrive. You can update manually, from your phone’s “Settings”, scroll down to “About phone” then click System Updates and then you’ll find the “Download” button. When it launched, it came with Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box. Eight months later, Xiaomi has started rolling out a new update that brings Android 8.1 Oreo to the device.

The update comes exactly two months after the Redmi Note 5 Pro also received its own stable update. Apart from Android 8.1 Oreo features such as picture-in-picture mode and new emojis, the update also brings Face Unlock to the device and camera improvements. There is also an image search feature, a smart assistant, and performance enhancements.

The update is rolling out slowly, so if you have not yet received it, you should be patient. However, there is a link already available to download the recovery ROM if you don’t want to wait for the OTA. It is over 1GB in size.

Once you are done downloading, move the file to the root folder of the internal storage of your device. Open the Updater app and tap the three dots at the corner, select “choose update package” and select the downloaded file. Follow the instructions on the screen.

The Redmi 5 Plus has a 5.99-inch FHD+ screen. It is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB/4Gb of RAM and 32GB/64GB of storage. A single 12MP camera sits on the back of the device while a 5MP sensor with its own LED flash is positioned above the display.

There is a 4000mAh battery under the hood. It also has a hybrid SIM slot (dual SIM or SIM + MicroSD card), a 3.5mm audio jack, an IR blaster, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The Mate 10 series launched towards the end of last year with EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo. Following its release, Huawei has regularly pushed out updates that brought new features to the device.

Back in March, Huawei pushed out an update that brought Face Unlock to the Mate 10. Then in May, another update brought the Huawei P20 Pro’s “long exposure without tripod” feature. June’s update came bundled with GPU Turbo for improved gaming and all-things graphics-related.

With the Mate 10, Huawei has shown that you do not have to buy the latest flagship to enjoy new features.

[envira-gallery id=”201583″]

The latest update not only brings 720p 960fps slow-motion recording but also brings AI photography, 3D portrait light effect, and a smart gallery.

For AI photography, the update increases the number of scene recognition modes from 13 categories to 19 categories and total scene/o recognition to over 500. Now, the camera(s) can identify more scenes and objects.

Apart from rolling out EMUI 8.0 update, the company has been actively working on bringing its GPU Turbo technology to a number of devices. The new technology can improve the graphics performance by 60 percent and it can be made available through a software update. A recent report had revealed that around 100 million Huawei and Honor device owners will be able to take advantage of GPU Turbo technology with the next few months.

Although Xiaomi only says the update brings June’s security patch, it also updates the device to Android 8.1 Oreo and comes with some serious bugs.

The update which weighs in at about 1.15GB is wiping SMS history for several users. It is reported to happen when you swipe away the messages app in the recent apps menu. It is advised that you back up your messages. The update is also said to cause SafetyNet, a Google security API to know if your device is in a known-good state, to fail.

Apart from these issues, everything else seems fine. The Android 8.1 Oreo update brings features like battery indicator for connected Bluetooth devices, an adaptive SystemUI theme that changes based on your wallpaper (dark wallpapers give black quick settings menu and bright wallpapers give a white quick settings menu), and new emojis to name a few. The update is also said to improve the audio quality of the device.

Even Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has also confirmed that the firm will be launching the Mi A2 in the near future. As far as Mi A1 is concerned, the Chinese manufacturer has already treated with Android 8.0 Oreo update earlier this year. Users of XDA forum have come across a leaked ROM of Android 8.1 Oreo beta for Mi A1 which suggests that Xiaomi is gearing up to release the latest edition of Oreo for it.

The following screenshot released by the publication confirms that Mi A1 users at XDA forum have already installed the leaked Mi A1 Android 8.1 Oreo beta update. Since it is a beta update and that too a leaked one, installing it may cause the Mi A1 to encounter various kind of issues such as that stock camera won’t work. However, the publication claims that the Google Camera ports are working properly. Users who have installed the leaked ROM claim that the update does not include Treble and there are no adaptive icons onboard. Also, there is no logo for VoLTE even when it is working.

There are no major features included in Android 8.1 when compared to the Android 8.0 Oreo update. One new feature that is included in the leaked beta update for Mi A1 is the black theme for a dark wallpaper. The update also tags along security patch for May. The Mi A1 Android 8.1 Oreo beta update that has been leaked features the new Power menu.

Xiaomi Mi A1 users who wish to try the leaked Android 8.1 Oreo beta update can visit the download link given below. It is advisable to carry out a backup on the phone before installing the leaked beta as there are many bugs present in in the build.

Xiaomi had hurriedly released a premature Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Mi A1 at the end of December 2017. The Oreo update had to be stalled twice before rolling out the stable version. Now that the Android 8.1 Oreo beta has been leaked for the Xiaomi Mi A1, it seems that the official release should be available within this month. Hopefully, the final build of the Android 8.1 Oreo for Mi A1 will be free from bugs.

It ran Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box with a promise to Oreo in Q1 2018. Sadly, Razer didn’t keep its promise.

With the second quarter beginning tomorrow, Razer announced via Twitter on Thursday that they will be updating the phone straight to Android 8.1 Oreo instead of 8.0. This may sound familiar and that is because this is the same decision Essential, another manufacturer that launched its first phone last year, took for the Essential PH-1.

Razer has also said that the update should arrive between mid to late April, 2018. If you can’t wait that long, you can download the developer review and try out the new features Android 8.1 brings.

Attention Razer Phone owners! We’re making the jump straight to Android 8.1 Oreo and we’re pleased to announce that the update will be coming to you mid to late April 2018.

The Razer Phone has a 5.7” IGZO LCD display with a 1440 x 2560 resolution. One of its key features is the display which has a 120Hz refresh rate. This makes it super responsive and great for gaming.

It is powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. Dual 12MP cameras grace the aluminium back and an 8MP sensor sits at the front.

The phone has front facing stereo speakers which have received much praise. It also packs a 4,000mAh battery and is the only phone confirmed by Qualcomm to support Quick Charge 4.0.

Both the smartphones — Nokia 5 and Nokia 6, were upgraded to the Android 8.0 Oreo update earlier this year in January. Earlier this month, both devices received the March security patch update in select markets.

Currently, the update is rolling out to the Nokia 5 in India, Tunisia, and Indonesia. On the other hand, the update for the original Nokia 6 is only available in India at the moment. However, we expect more markets to get this new software update in the next few days.

The Nokia 5 Android 8.1 Oreo update is about 866.7MB in size, while the Nokia 6’s update is 933.8MB. The update package is downloadable only through an active Wi-Fi connection. You can check the availability of the update on your Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 by going to Settings > System updates.

The official changelog for the update suggests that it comes with battery saving navigation buttons, a revamped power menu, new settings menu, and Bluetooth battery percentage. It also brings the March security patches to the handsets.

Further, the update also comes with several core Android features such as Neural Networks API, Autofill framework updates, and a shared memory API. Besides, users can expect performance improvements and bug fixes, including a corrected hamburger emoji.

The Nokia 5 was launched last year in February and comes with a 5.2-inch HD display. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, coupled with 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16GB of inbuilt storage. The phone is backed by a 3,000mAh battery.

On the other hand, the Nokia 6 features a 5.5-inch Full-HD IPS display and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor. It packs 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of inbuilt storage and is powered by a 3,000mAh battery.

The update is about 1.6GB in size and comes with the Android security patch for February 2018. The update will be available over-the-air (OTA) for those users who have already flashed a previous Open Beta build. However, for those who’ve not flashed Open Beta build, they’ll need to flash this new update manually by downloading it from downloads.oneplus.net.

It also comes with a new call pick-up gesture, enabling users to answer the call by raising the phone. Besides general bug fixes and improvements, the company has added more clock styles for ambient display and has added new optimizations in gaming mode for immersive gaming experience including power saving and pausing adaptive brightness.

For the OnePlus Switch, the company has also added support to migrate application data, allowing users to switch between devices seamlessly. Further, for the OnePlus 5T, the update also brings optimized full-screen gesture support.

Currently, the OnePlus 5T is the flagship smartphone from the China-based company, which was launched in November last year. It comes with a 6.01-inch Full HD+ Optic AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and is available in two variants — 6GB RAM with 64GB of internal storage and 8GB RAM with 128GB of internal storage. It comes with a 16-megapixel primary sensor at the back, with a wide-angle lens and large f/1.7 aperture.

Compared to its predecessor OnePlus 5, the secondary telephoto lens on the 5T has now been replaced by a 20-megapixel sensor with f/1.7 aperture for better low-light photography and improved depth-of-field. The phone is powered by a 3,300mAh battery which also supports Dash Charging.

For a device that runs close to stock Android, one would think it should have received a stable update instead. Unfortunately that update hasn’t come and will never come.

In a tweet via its official account, Essential has announced that the PH-1 will not get a stable Android 8.0 Oreo update. The reason is said to be due to several stability issues in Android 8.0 Oreo which they believe will be addressed in Android 8.1.

So rather than releasing Android 8.0 riddled with bugs, the Essential PH-1 will instead receive Android 8.1 Oreo. However, this will add a couple of weeks to when the device finally gets updated to Oreo.

An update on the public release of Oreo: pic.twitter.com/fPJRtX7kvY

Essential says it will release the Android 8.1 beta update in the meantime while they work on the build.

While this may be a bit disappointing for those who have been waiting endlessly for the update, we can all agree that waiting for a stable version that is bug free isn’t all that bad. You wouldn’t want to end up in the same boat as users of a certain Android One device, right?

There is no specific date as to when the beta version of Android 8.1 will be available but trust us to let you know once Essential make it available.

After rolling out updates for the Nokia 8, Nokia 6 and Nokia 5, HMD Global is now preparing to release the latest Android version update for the Nokia 2.

HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas recently confirmed on Twitter that Nokia 2 will soon receive the Android 8.1 Oreo update. Along with that, the company has also revealed that the update will bring Android Go (Oreo Edition) memory management features.

The Nokia 2 will be skipping the Android 8.0 update and will directly release Android 8.1 Oreo. The Nokia 2 comes with mediocre specifications, hence the phone’s performance will be optimized using Android Go’s memory management features. Juho Sarvikas said that the device cannot be upgraded to the Android Go program but they will include performance improvements based on Android 8.1 Oreo in the maintenance releases.

The clarification comes at a time when there are reports suggesting that the Nokia 1 might be the first smartphone to be the part of Google’s Android Go program. The phone is expected to feature an HD IPS display with 720p resolution. It is said to have 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. As per the reports, it could be priced around $85 and will be available from March 2018. However, there is no confirmation from the company yet.

The Nokia 2 features a 5-inch IPS LCD display and is powered by Qualcomm’s 1.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 212 processor. It packs 1GB RAM and 8GB of onboard storage which can be further expanded using a microSD card.

It comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It runs on Android 7.0 Nougat operating system out-of-the-box and comes with Google Assistant. The Dual SIM phone supports 4G VoLTE connectivity and is fuelled by a massive 4,100mAh battery that is rated to provide two days of battery life on a single charge.

Read More: Nokia 1 Is Reportedly A Part Of Android Go Program, Expected To Launch In March

Currently, HMD Global is testing Android 8.0 Oreo update on its budget smartphones — Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. Both devices are expected to receive the update by the end of 2017 or in the first week of 2018. The only phone from HMD Global that is yet to receive Android update is Nokia 3, but the company has confirmed that it will directly receive Android 8.0 Oreo update.

However, during an AMA session on the OnePlus forums, it was revealed that both devices (along with the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T) will receive an Android 8.1 Oreo update later. At the moment, Android 8.1 is only available as a developer preview for the Pixels, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X but will have a stable version before the end of the year.

Some of the features Android 8.1 brings includes the addition of a Bluetooth battery level icon next to the Bluetooth icon in the Quick Settings Panel. It also brings the ability to disable the “App is running in the background” notification, and limits notification alert sounds to one per second.

Unfortunately there is one feature that won’t be coming to OnePlus devices and that is Project Treble. Project Treble is one of Android 8.0’s key features. What it does is to make it easier, less expensive, and faster for manufacturers to update devices to new versions of Android.

It does this by separating the vendor implementation (device-specific, lower-level software written by silicon manufacturers) from the Android OS framework via a new vendor interface. In previous Android versions. device makers had to update most of the Android code to upgrade a device to a newer version of Android. But with project treble, the stable vendor interface provides access to the hardware-specific parts of Android, so that manufacturers can push out new Android updates by just updating the Android OS framework.

OnePlus says it has no plans to support Treble for any of its devices but doesn’t give a reason why.

Google has confined that an Android 8.1 Oreo update should arrive in coming weeks, though first as a developer preview (MR1). The stable update should follow after, arriving on the new Pixels first and then last year’s models.

The update is expected to activate the Pixel Visual Core chip inside the 2nd gen Pixels. No other features from the changelog have been mentioned.

Yesterday, Google revealed that the new Pixels have an image processing unit called the Pixel Visual Core. It will handle all things photography on the device. It is said to consume a tenth of the energy consumed by the SD835 while being 5X faster.

Apart from that, developers will be able to use it to bring the Pixel’s HDR+ photography to their apps that use the Android Camera API. This feature is said to come later.
