So you narrow down your options to three phones: the Nokia 6, the Moto G4 Plus, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. Which one of the phones deserve your money?

Display

All three phones have a 5.5-inch 1080p display but if you care about screen protection, that is where the differences come in.

The Nokia 6 and Moto G4 Plus boasts Corning Gorilla Glass 3 but Xiaomi is not known to use any form of display protection for its Redmi phones, so you might want to steer clear from it.

Just because there is no screen protection doesn’t mean the Redmi Note 4 is a total loser with respect to displays. It actually offers a higher screen-to-body ratio than the other two devices and this is as a result of its shorter frame.

Software

This is another round where Xiaomi loses. The Nokia 6 comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, and while the Moto G4 Plus comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow from the factory, there is already a Nougat update available.

Xiaomi on the other hand is still working on MIUI 9 which is said to be based on Android Nougat. It will be available later this year but there is no assurance if the android version of the Redmi Note 4 will change after the update. The reason is because Xiaomi is fond of releasing updates to its MIUI ROM but not updating the android version for some devices even though they get the new ROM update. So it is quite possible to see a Xiaomi phone running MIUI 8 while still on Android Kitkat.

RAM and ROM

The Moto G4 Plus and Redmi Note 4 are available in multiple RAM and storage variants. For the sake of this article we will keep the variants limited to 4GB + 64GB for the Moto G4 Plus; 3GB +32GB and 3GB + 64GB for the Redmi Note 4. The Nokia 6 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The good thing about all three devices is that they all support microSD cards of up to 256GB.

Processor

This is a deciding factor for a lot of people when it comes to purchasing phones. The Snapdragon 430 chip in the Nokia 6 is more or less its most popular spec as most people are displeased with Nokia’s SoC choice. It is clocked at 1.4GHz and consists of eight Cortex-A53 cores. The Moto G4 Plus doesn’t fare much better. It sports a Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor (4 x 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4 x 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53) which was released back in 2015.

Xiaomi has gone all out with the chip in the Redmi Note 4. There is a Helio X20 deca-core processor clocked at 2.1GHz (2 x Cortex A-72 & 8 x Cortex-A53). So while all three processors will handle your regular apps and tasks easily, only the Helio X20 will be able to handle high performance tasks without any sweat due to its Cortex-A72 cores.

The GPU is also pretty important. The Nokia 6 has an Adreno 505 GPU and the Moto G4 Plus has an Adreno 405 GPU. Inside the Redmi Note 4 is a Mali T880-MP4.

Camera

The Nokia 6 sports a 16MP shooter with a f/2.0 aperture, PDAF and dual-LED flash. Up front is an 8MP camera for selfies.

The Moto G4 Plus has a 16MP camera with the same f/2.0 aperture. In addition to Phase Detection Auto Focus, the G4 Plus also has laser autofocus. The front camera is a 5MP shooter.

The Redmi Note 4 has a f/2.0 13MP rear camera with PDAF and dual LED flash and the front facing camera is a 5MP sensor.

Battery and Extra Features

The Moto G4 Plus and the Nokia 6 both feature 3000mAh batteries with support for fast charging but their batteries are small compared to that of the Redmi Note 4 which is an impressive 4100mAh capacity. Not the biggest in a mid-range phone but large enough to give you a few extra hours of screen-on-time. It also supports fast charging.

All three phones have fingerprint scanners but the Xiaomi is the only one with its mounted on the rear. They all have audio jacks but the Moto G4 Plus lacks any form of audio enhancement. The Nokia 6 comes with Dolby Atmos while the Xiaomi comes with 24-bit hi-res audio support.

READ MORE: Vernee Apollo vs OnePlus 3T Design Comparison

Price

Nokia’s first phone is heavily priced at about $250, a price generally agreed to be on the high side. The Moto G4 Plus actually costs more; priced at $269 for the 4GB+64GB version and $194.99 for the 2GB+16GB variant. The price for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 isn’t surprising as the company is known for its aggressive pricing. The 3GB + 32GB variant will set you back $150 while the 3GB + 64GB variant is priced at around $170.

Conclusion

The price alone should make the Xiaomi your choice but if you are bent on having the latest software version, you will have to consider either the Nokia 6 or the Moto G4 Plus. Just remember that you will be shelling out more money not only for the latest software but for a likely better camera, more RAM, and a smaller battery.

The Meizu Box runs a special version of Flyme OS called Flyme for TV which is based on Android Marshmallow. When it launched, it was priced at ¥299 (~$43) but the news now is that it will get bumped up to ¥399 (~$57).

The announcement was made on Meizu’s official Weibo page where Meizu attributed the increase in price of the device to an increase in the cost of materials. The price change has already been effected on the official store.

Meizu’s TV Box has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage, a quad-core cortex-A53 processor clocked at 2GHz and a Mali 450 GPU. There is dual band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and it has an HDMI port, a USB port, and an Ethernet port. The Meizu Box which comes with a remote that has voice controls, supports 4K video playback and Dolby Digital.

Now, we have got some more details about the device, this time, about its software. Bluboo seems to have confirmed that the upcoming Bluboo Maya will run on the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow version. This will make it the company’s first smartphone with the new Android version.

While Marshmallow version is basically confirmed on the Maya, the company is yet to reveal the exact features of the device when it comes to software. But it should definitely benefit from the efficient working of the new OS, reportedly lowering power consumption by 20 percent.

Bluboo Maya is expected to be announced and released via various online stores in June. The phone is also said to come with a similar diamond texture as found on the Bluboo Xtouch models. Other features of the upcoming device include a 5.5-inch display, quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz, 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The company is also betting on the good camera performance of the Bluboo Maya as compared to the competition in the segment.

Stay tuned as we bring more information about the new budget device from Bluboo.

The company had promised earlier to provide timely updates for improving the overall software experience of the device and recently, the company started updating the UMi Touch to a new version. This makes it the second update for the device since its launch a few weeks back. The new update will upgrade the software to UMITOUCH.V3.03_20160409. Like the upgrade number suggests, the update started rolling out yesterday.

If you are wondering how to update your smartphone, just go to Settings > About Phone> Wireless Update > Check For Updates > Update. It’s as simple as updating any other Android smartphone, so shouldn’t be a problem for most users.

The latest Android v6.0(Marshmallow) has some how managed to crawl past 2%, although it is growing, but not as expected.

According to the data Android v6.0(Marshmallow) is now running on 2.3% active Android devices. Interestingly, the level of distribution has doubled up from the February’s figure of 1.2%.

Finally, Android Lollipop v5.X’s market has managed to top the chart after 16 months of its initial release. Android Lollipop holds total share of around 36.1%(Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop running on 16.9% and 19.2% respectively). While, the devices running Android KitKat v4.4 have dropped down to 34.3% this month from 35.5% last month.

The Android 4.1.x – 4.3 (Jelly Bean) has now combined share of 22.3% compared to 23.9% last month and Android ICS v4.0.x has around 2.3% with 0.2% decrease from last month’s data.

Honeycomb has no place in the list, Android Gingerbread v2.3.3-2.3.3 and Android Froyo v2.2 has distribution shares around 2.6% and 0.1% respectively.

It is worth mentioning that Android 6.0 version market share is surely going to level up as numerous OEM’s releasing Android 6.0 updates. But, Google will be demonstrating Android 7.0 at Google I/O developer conference, which is expected to happen soon. With this, some manufacturers may not follow v6.0, which is not a good practice.

Elephone P9000 Lite hands-on photos

We have today received images of the Elephone P9000 Lite hands-on photos this time rather than CGI renders.

Whilst the P9000 Lite dose still feature black bezels, unlike other Elephone handsets that have come before, the bezels are not butted up to an additional 1-2mm of metal chassis.

The 5.5″ LG LTPS OGS screen really appears to stand out against this thin black bezel and should help to give a much more ddesirable body to screen ratio.

The Elephone P9000 lite will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, running on a Mediatek MT6755 Helio P10 CPU, USB type-C and NFC.

Hopefully the new design statement of the P9000 Lite’s bezels will be the start of greater (or should that be lesser) things to come.

Elephone have provided several images that show the phone next to various other handsets to give a better idea of the bezels size.

Elephone have once again chosen to go with an all metal body construction for the Elephone M3.

Other specifications have been improved and should hopefully stand the phone in good stead amongst its budget peers.

The addition of USB Type C connector and Mediatek Helio P10 (MT6755) processor on the Elephone M3, means that we will hopefully start to see other manufacturers also start to include higher specifications on their budget phones.

The renders show a good looking handset with 2.5d glass and nicely chamfered chassis along with a metal back that reflects the curvature of the 2.5d glass edges of the display. Hopefully when it is released the phone will look as good in person as it does in these renders (best not to forget that Elephone are the king of great renders but have not always managed to deliver what has been shown).

Another nice feature of the M3 is that it will ship with Android os6 Marshmallow, I just hope that the screen and cameras on the Elephone M3 will be of decent quality, if they can get those bits right this would be a great second handset.

Sow what do you think looking at the renders and the specs that we know so far and given the target price of $99 (£66) could this be going on your shopping list?

Please feel free to leave comments and questions below, I will keep you informed as and when I receive more information about the Elephone M3

Regards Shanos

Now, ASUS has just revealed some of the models which will get Android M update in the coming months.

ASUS revealed on its official Zentalk forums that most of the latest models will be upgraded to the new Android 6.0 operating system. The list of models which will be upgraded are as follow:

PadFoneS (PF500KL)

ZenFone2 (ZE550ML/ZE551ML)

ZenFone2 Deluxe / Special Edition (ZE551ML)

ZenFone2 Laser (ZE500KG/ZE500KL/ZE550KL/ZE600KL/ZE601KL)

ZenFone Selfie (ZD551KL)

As you can see, the recent models are supported for the upgrade. However, the company has decided to leave out older models such as the ZenFone 5 and the first generation versions out of the upgrade. Not surprising given that they are more than a year old.

Unfortunately, the company has not revealed when you can expect the Android M update. Considering the company’s timing of lollipop update this year, we can expect the Android 6 rollout to start only by a few months into 2016.

Elephone has just confirmed to us that both Elephone P8000 and Elephone P6000 Pro will be getting Android 6.0. Both these devices were announced a few months back, so its not surprising to see them getting the latest Android version. Also, there are other smartphones being tested for Android M but at the moment, we are not sure which other models will be upgraded. Also, we still don’t know when exactly these updates will roll out to the respective smartphones.

The company also confirms that its upcoming flagship, Elephone P9000 along with its variants like the Elephone P9000 Lite and P9000C will come with Android M 6.0 pre-installed. This is definitely good news for those who were planning to purchase this upcoming device from the company.

As for the P8000 users who are running Android 5.10 at the moment, the company has released a new update for fixing a few bugs like “screen flashing” and “no gallery response” while using front camera. If you had these problems, just head over to their forums, where there’s the download link to the ROM and flash it on to your device. There will be an OTA update too, so if you can wait for a few days, then go for the second option.
