As soon as Qualcomm announced the Xiaolong 855 Plus, more than five handset makers decided they’d launch a new smartphone equipped with the latest flagship chip in the second half of this year.

ASUS is the only manufacturer with Snapdragon 855 Plus and has already incorporated the chipset in the latest smartphone called ASUS ROG Phone 2. Details about exactly when will other manufacturers use this chipset is still far and between.

Aside from the aforesaid upgrade, ASUS is slated to roll out the usual updates to the ROG Phone configuration based on this hardware in collaboration with Tencent cooperation, offering a superior gaming experience to its huge fanbase.

As soon as I arrived at the office today, WinBoy editor handed me a briefcase and said a three-digital password. This gave me an impression that I might be checking the military computer of Latitude 7214. I didn’t expect to open the briefcase but just to take a quick glimpse of ROG Phone 2.

However, it took a whopping 3 minutes to get the smartphone and its accessories out of the briefcase.

The texture is the highlight of the design

The ROG Phone 2 seems to bear a striking resemblance to its 2018 predecessor as far as the design is concerned.

The slender body, which is bigger than my palm also looks quite familiar. Given that there is no specific use of the front of the shaped screen, the phone isn’t very unique in terms of aesthetics. The ROG breathing light, the hexagonal camera, the Maya covering the back Pattern, and the striking plating color are likely to grab your attention.

Although a layman might not understand the importance of certain hardware incorporated in the ROG Phone 2, these features and hardware are important as this is a game phone.

Similar to the gaming computer at Starbucks, that you come up with the brightest on the MacBook and the Surface.

Despite retaining nearly the same appearance, the ROG Phone 2 has undergone a slew of radical overhauls. These changes are more evident on the back of the phone.

First off, the fingerprint identification area has been revamped. The original ROG Phone adopted a capacitive fingerprint design, so we will see a dedicated area on the back of the phone.

ASUS has resorted to using the hexagonal design in the original design in this portion in a bid to retain the main style and ensure it doesn’t look cramped.

As far as the screen configuration is concerned, the ROG Phone 2 sports a 6.59-inch screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. Although it does not have 2K resolution, it supports HDR 10 and 240Hz touch sampling.

The latest ROG phone still has no specific use for the special-shaped screens. Nevertheless, it is highly likely that the shape enhances the overall gaming experience. Even if the special-shaped screen develops in Android for a couple of years, it is worth noting that there are several games that are still not compatible with waterdrop notch and bangs screens seen on some new smartphones.

In my opinion, the most appealing aspect of the screen is the 120Hz refresh rate. To facilitate user control of power consumption, ROG also provides a 60 / 90 / 120Hz three-speed refresh rate option in the settings.

However, as a person who has been “sweet” by a 90-liter 90-Hz screen, a person who does not leave the charging treasure, I, of course often open 120Hz, and then enjoy the silky as a pleasure.

Another evident adjustment can be seen in the design of the Maya pattern and the side edge cutting. The Maya pattern in the back area is no longer placed near the camera but stretches more boldly to the sides of the phone, and the viewing experience is more engaging than the previous generation.

The knife-cut modular filter screen has been replaced with a stripe design, unlike the previous two quadrilaterals. This portion looks more restrained now than the bolder Maya pattern.

Housed in a glass frame, the ROG Phone 2 looks and feels great. On the downside, the thickness and weight of the glass body, along with the internal heat dissipation system have made the ROG Phone 2 “a half-pound” heavier.

As a technical editor, I have used multiple phones including the iPhone XS Max (208 g) and Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium (236 g). The ROG Phone 2’s 240 g weight; however, redefines what I knew about the weight of the mobile phone (data source Ministry of Information Technology).

Taking accessories into consideration, the expansion performance of the ROG Phone 2 is nothing short of impressive. Aside from the 3D Vapor Chamber condensing system + copper plate thermal pad + graphene thermal pad design of the mobile phone body, similar to the ROG Phone last year, the new machine features an external cooling fan.

As a result, the side of the old and new ROG Phones will have a set of interfaces for external accessories, unlike ordinary phones. Moreover, we can connect the fan to the mobile phone and enable heat dissipation. Regrettably, this increases the overall weight of the mobile phone.

When you are playing your favorite game, the USB-C interface acts as a charging port of the mobile phone, preventing you from operating in the horizontal screen, as you’d normally do. Alternatively, you can connect the mobile phone to a dedicated base, expand the picture to the display, and use the mobile phone as a portable game console.

As for the conventional interface, the ROG Phone 2 is also quite comprehensive, with a 3.5mm headphone jack, in addition to the USB-C.

Following the elimination of the earphone hole in some phones, several users were left with no choice but to use wireless headphones. But much to their chagrin, the wireless earphones have failed to completely address the concern associated with the delay.

Thankfully, the ROG Phone 2 gaming smartphone has not dumped the headphone hole, and it is a wise decision, according to me.

The first Snapdragon 855 Plus has excellent performance

ASUS’s decision to employ the Snapdragon 855 Plus for its ROG Phone 2 isn’t surprising at all. Given that the ROG Phone used the upscale version of the Snapdragon 845 last year, ASUS has enjoyed a “special treatment” from Qualcomm.

Keeping in line with that, ASUS launched the Snapdragon 855 Plus, which seems more like the bloody version of 2018’s Dragon 845 to me. The only difference is that the upgraded Snapdragon 855 Plus broke the Qualcomm’s consistent product rhythm and was highly praised, and Qualcomm made it available to more manufacturers outside of Asus.

While I didn’t expect much from the Snapdragon 855 Plus before opening the box, it turned out to be the strongest Android phone as soon as I started checking this 855 Plus+12GB+512GB. It is the strongest Android phone. I even figured out the big difference between the Snapdragon 855 and the Apple A12 after running points, games, and comparisons.

This Qualcomm does not include too many adjustments to the configuration of the Snapdragon 855 Plus, particularly in terms of core frequency and GPU performance optimization:

• The core frequency has been upgraded from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz of the Snapdragon 855;
• The graphics core Adreno 640 is optimized for gaming and entertainment features, with a 15% improvement in performance.

The Snapdragon 855 Plus deserves to bear the Plus suffix. These upgrades confirm that the product is indeed a revamped configuration for the performance of the mobile phone, making it a better gaming phone.

Through the comparison of GeekBench, we can see the performance gap between Qualcomm and Apple’s two processors:

Compared to the 3010 / 10802 points (single / multi-core) of the Snapdragon 855 (sample plus one 7 Pro), the 3580 / 11206 points (single / multi-core) of the Snapdragon 855Plus is still quite impressive.

When compared to the Apple A12 (the prototype is iPhone XS Max), the multi-core performance is very close, but the single-core performance still has an evident gap in terms of performance.

The 3D Mark score shows the gap between the two Adreno 640s. In the Sling Shot Extreme OpenGL ES 3.1 test, the Snapdragon 855 Plus scored 6203 points, which is higher than the 5,038 points of the Snapdragon 855.

In the Vulkan performance, the Snapdragon 855 Plus surpasses the 5,057 points of the Snapdragon 855 with a score of 5393.

As far as processing power is concerned, the up-and-down Snapdragon 855 Plus can’t outperform the Apple A series in terms of single-core performance, but it has a significant improvement compared to the Snapdragon 855, which is already very strong, so this product without an iota of doubt, deserves to sit on the throne of the strongest processor in the Android camp this year.

I tested the two scenarios without a fan and “installing fan + strongest wind speed”. From the measured data, starting from 4% for 30 minutes, it can charge 37% of the electricity; the whole process is charged to 99%, which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Once it was fully charged, I left no stone unturned in a bid to utilize the full battery life. However, I found it difficult to use up the 6000mAh battery.

I started with the zero points on the 22nd, because I was just full of electricity at that time, after 8 hours of standby, the phone power was 96%. After finishing my work, I played games for 1.5 hours, listened to the songs for about one hour, watched 50 minutes of online video, and used WeChat Weibo continuously without going offline. Until the 23rd, my phone still has 10% remaining power, the phone shows the total screen time is 5 hours and 45 minutes.

It should be noted that this test is performed under the condition of a 120Hz screen refresh rate. If you use 60Hz used by most mobile phones, the battery life may get 1.5 days/charge level.

The camera performance is in line with the mainstream, which is good enough

Since the starting of this year, all sorts of mobile phones, whether it carries a one-thousand-yuan price tag or retail for thousands of dollars, the 48 million-pixel CMOS in the past six months, has evolved from a new thing to the current standard configuration of the Android flagships.

In the excitement of the camera, pixel jumped to a higher level again, I also had to admire the application speed of the new domestic mobile phone technology.

The ROG Phone 2 houses a 48-megapixel primary camera with a 13-megapixel sub-camera configuration; the main camera is the familiar Sony IMX 586 CMOS.

The combination of the two cameras is still a “high-pixel lens + 125° wide-angle” design. Since there is no lens specifically for telephoto shooting, the camera only provides 2 lossless zooms.

The three or four shots are quite useless. However, for a game phone, the ROG Phone 2 camera can deemed as a luxury.

When it comes to capturing memorable moments, the image performance of ROG Phone 2 is quite good. It features a 48-megapixel CMOS and has outstanding performance in image resolution.

The apple logo in the proofs can still see the full details after the image is enlarged, and the text under the logo can be displayed clearly after zooming in.

We turned on the automatic HDR mode of ROG Phone 2 at the time of the shooting. With the aid of HDR, the details of the clouds hidden in the highlights can be expressed, while the light and dark matching of the clouds highlight the layering.

Of course, this sample still retains a trace of HDR processing. If the user wants the picture to look more natural, you can adjust the contrast after shooting, and the picture will be better.

The close-up ability of the phone is also something to shout about. The surface details can be clearly displayed when shooting food. The blurring of close-up shooting is not bad either.

The color of ROG Phone 2 is primarily based on reduction, and it does not offer too many color adjustment, so it is still relatively flat when shooting food. For a more vivid and appealing color effect, you need to do some post-adjustment after shooting.

For nighttime photography, the ROG Phone 2 delivers an average imaging performance. We turned off automatic HDR shooting and found that ROG Phone 2 is still able to do light control work. While the night sky can be kept clean, we still managed to capture some of the details of the cloud in the picture.

Despite a complicated light environment on the opposite side, the ROG Phone 2 provides a stable output and capture perfect photos with color reproduction. However, because there is no automatic HDR assistance, some of the lighting positions are still exposed.

In addition to maintaining stability, it is imperative for the user to pay attention to the selection of the metering point. In this complex lighting scene, there are certain occasions when you need to press the exposure to retain more detail in the light.

While the ROG Phone 2 can keep the sky clean, there are still a lot of obvious smearing feelings when zooming in on the picture, and you are likely to experience a situation of low resolution at night. Note that these problems are only noticeable when you enlarge the image. It is ideally used to send Weibo and friends, but the impact is not impressive by any stretch of the imagination.

The battery is like a bull, a big horsepower muscle car

The ROG Phone 2 has achieved a large number of upgrades in configuration department this year, taking the competitive incentives in the mobile phone market into consideration. There are still many aspects such as higher resolution screens (which are more pleasing), eye system design that needs improvement.

More than 75% of the smartphones available in the market run Android OS as of May 2019. Apple’s iOS comes in second place with a HUGE gap with just 22.7% share. This goes on to show the dominance of Android globally. But when did it all start? Some might say that it all started with Google’s acquisition of Android back in 2005. But I would say it all started with one phone, the HTC Dream, the world’s first Android smartphone.

The HTC Dream aka HTC G1 or T-Mobile G1 (US) was the first ever phone to ship with Android. The phone was aptly named – the Dream because it was set to revolutionize the smartphone market. Android brought in one unique aspect to the smartphone industry – open source, which wasn’t common in OSes back in September 2008. Symbian, iPhone OS, and Blackberry OS were the dominant players back then. Symbian powered the Nokia phones, iPhone OS powered the Apple iPhones, and Blackberry OS powered the Blackberry phones. But what about those who didn’t want to invest a lot in their own operating system? This is where Android and its open source nature came to the rescue.

HTC didn’t have a proprietary OS. It did rely on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile-based PDA’s before the HTC Dream but it was looking for an operating system that could suit its needs. See, back then, HTC was one of the largest smartphone makers in the world. Google’s Android looked promising and was unlike other proprietary operating systems back then. It made sense for HTC to give Android a try.

The result was the HTC G1. Apart from running Android OS, the phone also came with 3G support, which was a really big deal back then. This meant that the G1 aka Dream went head-on against Apple’s iPhone 3G.

While both were smartphones that focused on providing high-speed 3G network connectivity, their designs were quite opposite. The iPhone 3G was sleek and beautiful, while the HTC Dream was bulky, heavy, and chunky.

The HTC Dream came with a plastic and boring design. It weighed 158 grams, which was really heavy for a 3.2-inch screen smartphone. It had a slider keyboard which was pretty robust but added to its weight and thickness. The total thickness went up to 0.62-inches which, in comparison to the iPhone’s 0.48-inches, was really thick. But HTC had to include a slider because they felt users were not yet ready for a virtual keyboard. Then there was the big chin at the bottom that housed five physical buttons and a trackball similar to Blackberry.

Clearly, it wasn’t built to compete with the iPhone of its time.

However, the HTC Dream was special. It came with Qualcomm’s best smartphone SoC, the MSM7201A clocked at 528MHz with 192 MB of RAM, 256 MB of ROM with 16GB expandable storage via MicroSD. Top-end stuff of its time! Plus, it had a 3.15MP camera at the back with auto-focus. The 3.2-inch screen had capacitive touch support but didn’t feature multi-touch. The resolution was 320 x 480 pixels. The screen was actually pretty good for a 2008 phobe and received a lot of praise from reviewers.

As for your music needs, the HTC Dream didn’t have a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. Instead, it featured HTC’s proprietary ExtUSB port which supported Mini USB plugs. An adapter could be used to connect your regular 3.5mm headphones.

As for software, which was its highlight, the HTC Dream came with Android v1.0. There were no fancy dessert names back, just the good old version numbers. The phone came with custom home screen support, widgets, app multitasking, a notification drawer, and an Android market with 50 odd apps. It’s interesting to note that the thing that makes Android special today, made HTC Dream special too, even back in 2008. The phone supported Google’s own Gmail, Maps, Search, and Youtube apps.

Soon after the HTC Dream was released, developers managed to root and mod the phone. This led to communities like XDA which has become the heart and soul of Android.

It all started just 11 years back, with HTC at the helm. Clearly, the HTC Dream is no longer a dream. It’s a reality. What it envisioned back in 2008, Google, Android, and millions of developers across the globe have managed to convert it into reality!

So, the HTC Dream will always have a special place in our smartphone history!

We have seen this aspect ratio become popular among almost all flagships this year and now, a French brand named Echo is launching a new model with the same 18:9 aspect ratio, called the Horizon. Unlike the flagships which retail for over €400-500, the Horizon will be priced at just €169,90.

French readers might have heard of this brand since Echo’s earlier products were mainly focused in the French market. However, with the Horizon, the company aims to expand to Europe, and it believes that the quality and competitive pricing would make the phone attractive in other European markets as well.

Specs wise, the Echo Horizon will be featuring a large 5.7-inch IPS display sporting HD resolution (1440×720 pixel) and a fancy 18:9 display aspect ratio, which should satisfy all your media consumption needs while keeping bezels to the minimum. There are plenty of phones out there and most of them have so many smart features that some of you may not even need. I just came across a $20 feature phone and I decided to give it a try. Did I like it? Learn more in the full VKWORLD Stone V3S review.

The phone ships with a charger, some paperwork and some extra SIM card adapters.

DESIGN and FEATURES

For $20, you get a little phone that has the IP65 rating, meaning that the phone can survive some beating. Also, it is dust and dirt resistant and the device is splash-proof.

The Vkworld V3S is a well-built phone. I love the metal used on the sides of the device, which gives a little bit of premium look and feel.

The display is definitely not the sharpest out there but it is enough for such a cheap feature phone. However, the viewing angles are bad and it is quite reflective during the cloudy day.

The nicely backlit physical keys are tactile and they are nice to the touch.

One of the key selling points of the device is a dual-LED flashlight. However, I didn’t find it brighter than your everyday smartphone.

The loudspeaker is really good as it is louder than on most of the smartphones and the sound is quite clear.

USER INTERFACE and TEST NOTES

When it comes to the user interface, you should not expect to have lots of smart features but the phone gets the basics right. We have some essential everyday apps, music player, FM radio, calendar,  a few pre-installed games and so on.

Speaking of the basics, the call quality and signal reception are great.

Since you are going to use this phone mainly for the calls and other basic stuff, the battery will last you for days.

I could not kill this phone in 1 week using two SIM cards at the same time. Even if you don’t use the phone very often, the advertised 25 day standby time is a great feature to have.

CONCLUSIONS

So, there you have it, the $20 Vkworld V3S. It’s definitely not the phone for everyone since it was designed mainly for those who need just a simple phone that is well-built and it can survive a few drops and has just the basic features.

So far the phone has worked fine for me and I believe it’s worth the $20 price tag but I’m switching back to my smartphone as I can’t live without all the smart features it has.

According to a new report, Google seems to be preparing its own smartphone to take on the Apple iPhone in the market. It is said that “Google wants more control over design, manufacturing, and software”. Up till now, the company’s reach has been limited to software, but if this turns out to be true, Google soon could make its entry into the smartphone hardware. While this won’t be the company’s first hardware product (remember Google Pixel C?), it will be the first self-made smartphone.

This move by the company could be a result of the fragmentation of the Android platform. There are millions of smartphones in the market today that’s based on Google’s Android OS, however, most of them feature a tweaked version by their respective manufacturer. This has adversely affected the consistency of the software on different models as well as the adoption rate of the new versions of Android.

With Google’s self-made smartphone, the company will have greater control over the software as well as the hardware, much like the Apple iPhone. This would be the best move to take on the iPhone models which are usually considered more stable and premium than other Android handsets.

Previously, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai had hinted that the company plans to add some new features to the Android Nexus lineup. We could see such special features on the new Google smartphone as well.

The report states that this Google made phone could release by the end of this year, which means we won’t have to wait for too long to meet this iPhone killer.

Elephone have today sent over several images of their soon to be released Elephone M2 Business phone, its shaping up to be a great looking phone, unfortunately the images do not show the screen in use so I cannot advise on the size of the bezels.

These are pretty much standard specifications for a mid range handset at the current time, so the phone will need to have some standout design and software elements or a very competitive price to compete and win business.

A brand new smartphone from domestic mobile phone manufacturer IUNI has recently been listed on the website of TENAA. The phone is dubbed the N1, and is expected to be priced under 1,000 Yuan. Looking at the images posted on the website, there’s certainly a flair as far as the design element is concerned, giving the phone a bit of a character. At first glance, it would look as if the device comes with two cameras each on its front and rear. The reality however, is that what looks like the extra cameras, are actually LED lights, which come ensconced in cavities with the exact same design as the cameras, resulting in the visual illusion.

While not all hardware specifications are clear about the upcoming smartphone from IUNI, the listing on TENAA has revealed the N1 comes with a 5-inch display, with a 1280 x 720 resolution. The device is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor of unknown make. However, it is being speculated that the chip might be Mediatek’s MT6735 SoC. The phone also comes with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The rear camera on the device is expected to have a 13 megapixel sensor, while the front camera is expected to come with an 8 megapixel sensor. The phone is also said to come with a 2000 mAh battery, and will be running Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

While speculating about product pricing is always fraught with danger, taking into account the price of the IUINI U3 has now been reduced to 1399 Yuan, it probably wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to think the IUNI N1 will probably be significantly more affordable, and will probably come with a price-tag between 799 to 999 Yuan. As there’s no official confirmation of the device from IUNI just as yet, we’ve no idea when the N1 is expected to come to the market, but with the device already earning the regulator’s approval, we’d imagine the launch date won’t be too far away.

Samsung has officially unveiled a new smartphone called Samsung Galaxy E7 today. The Korean company took the stage at China Samsung Forum 2015 to announce the new phone.

According to Samsung, the new phone in its Galaxy series will be aimed at mid-range smartphone market. In fact, the company is placing the new phone below the recently-released Galaxy A series smartphones. The phone’s targeted market will be mostly Asia.

Like most Samsung Galaxy series smartphone, Galaxy E7 has the average Samsung design. It focuses on an ultra-thin design philosophy and the body is more rounded when compared to A series, which is already on sale in the market.

The Samsung Galaxy E7, the first of Galaxy E series, packs a 5.5-inch screen with 720p HD display. Under the hood, it sports Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. It has microSD card slot so users can increase the device storage according to their needs.

Galaxy E7 also has a 13 MP camera on the back and 5 MP camera on the front. It runs on Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box, no words on whether it will receive update to the latest version of Android, though.

With a 2950mAh capacity battery, Samsung Galaxy E7 will support dual SIM cards. In addition to that, the phone will work on FDD 4G LTE network and will be priced at around 2000 Yuan (roughtly $320).

HTC has officially announced that it will release a dual-SIM variant of its flagship – HTC One. This HTC One (M8) Dual SIM will be available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, starting from next week. It will be priced at €799, with the single-SIM HTC One (M8) priced at €570.

Besides the dual-SIM feature, HTC One (M8) Dual SIM has the same specifications as its single-SIM variant.
