Interestingly, taking the top three spots are gaming smartphones. Black Shark 4 Pro is leading the list, followed by ASUS ROG Gaming Phone 5 Phantom while the third spot is held by ZTE‘s Nubia Red Magic 6 Pro.

Given that all of them are flagship gaming smartphones, all three devices are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset. Leading the list of top-performing phones is Black Shark 4 Pro which has an average score of 938,991 points.

To make use of the full strength of the Snapdragon 888 SoC, the Black Shark 4 Pro smartphone comes with a “sandwich” three-dimensional liquid cooling system 2.0 for advanced heat dissipation for the 5G chip, processor unit, and 120W charging chip. It is designed with an isolation layout to effectively avoid excessive heat source concentration.

January is the month of the Consumer Electronics Show and it usually brings a lot of innovation in the technology world. CES 2020 will kick off on January 7 and several companies will attend and showcase their most innovative products. That is why, given that we mostly talk about smartphones, we decided to write a post including all the important upcoming launches in January 2020 in regards to smartphones. We still do not know every device which will be launched this month, but we tried to guess all the companies which will come up with a new phone in January.

Upcoming smartphones of the month

Realme X50 and X50 Lite

Oppo‘s brand already confirmed that it will officially unveil the Realme X50 series on January 7. The line-up will include two models: Realme X50 5G which will be the first 5G smartphone of the brand, and Realme X50 Lite. The Realme X50 5G just appeared on TENAA listings with all of its most important specifications. It will feature an LCD display with a 6.67-inch diagonal and a Full HD+ resolution. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 765G and it will be available in various memory configurations including 6, 8 or 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. On the rear side, there will be a quad camera with a 64 MP main sensor, while on the front you will get a dual front camera with 16 and 8 MP resolution housed in a punch hole. The battery will have a 4100 mAh capacity and the support of VOOC 4.0 fast charging technology.

OnePlus Concept One

OnePlus will bring a concept phone to CES 2020. Its name is OnePlus Concept One and, given that it is a concept, it will not become a commercial device. The company published an official teaser about the phone and revealed that it will come with an “invisible camera” technology. The rear cameras will be placed underneath a one pixel LCD panel. The rear side of the smartphone is supposed to be made of leather and the phone could be launched in cooperation with McLaren.

Sony

Sony has officially announced that it is going to hold an event at CES 2020. In the statement the company says that it will be unveiling a unique vision of the future, bringing creativity and technology together like never before. It is still unknown whether or not it is talking about a smartphone. The company is supposed to launch the Xperia 3 this year, but it will more likely unveil it at MWC 2020 in February. But in the past the company unveiled several midrange smartphones at CES in Las Vegas, so do not lose your hope.

LG

Just like Sony, LG was used to unveil budget devices at the Consumer Electronics Show. For example, in 2017 the company announced the Stylus 3 with a capacitive pen. We do not expect it to unveil a new flagship phone at CES 2020, but the company might come up with a new affordable device. LG’s main flagship LG G9 should debut at MWC 2020 in February and it might be announced alongside the LG V60 ThinQ.

Samsung Galaxy A51 and A71

Last month Samsung announced its new generation of mid-rangers from the Galaxy A series. The company unveiled Galaxy A51 and A71, but they are still not on sale globally. They will be officially available to purchase in the global market starting from the middle of January. They will be sold for €379,90 and €479,90, respectively (prices may change depending on the region). Samsung Galaxy A51 and A71 are offering punch-hole Infinity-O displays and a quad camera setup. They belong to the midrange segment and provide a long battery life thanks to 4000 and 4500 mAh battery respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S20 and Fold 2 showcase

Samsung will announce its main flagship series of the year in February. We are talking about the Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup, which will be joined by the Galaxy Fold 2. But we expect the Korean giant to reveal something about Galaxy S20 and Fold 2 during CES 2020. A promotional video leaked on the web revealing that the company will hold an Unpacked event, but Samsung still did not confirm it officially. CES 2020 is expected to be the right place for that announcement. Further, Samsung might showcase its Galaxy Fold 2 just like it did in the past with the Galaxy Fold. We already know that Samsung Galaxy S20 will probably include an Ultra variant and that Galaxy Fold 2 will have a clamshell design.

Redmi K30 and K30 5G

Last month, Xiaomi’s sub-brand announced Redmi K30 and K30 5G. The latter is the first midrange phone hitting the market with 5G connectivity. It will be officially available to purchase starting from January 7 in China. Redmi K30 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 765G with an integrated 5G modem and it boasts a dual front camera embedded in a punch-hole display. The vanilla K30 has a Snapdragon 730G SoC and it only supports 4G. Both the phones offer a huge 4500 mAh battery and a 120 Hz display with a 6.67-inch diagonal. If you were careful, you probably noticed a lot of similarities with the Realme X50 5G which will be its main rival.

TCL

TCL will hold an event at CES 2020 in which it will showcase new Mini-LED TVs. There is no info about the launch of a new smartphone, but given that the company recently launched its first phone under the TCL brand and it owns Alcatel and BlackBerry, it is legit to expect something new.

There were a lot of best-selling smartphone line-ups in the last years, but there were also a lot of flops. When smartphone series has a lot of success or when they do not have enough, often manufacturers decide to ax them. In the first case, we are talking about marketing strategies, while in the second it is a pretty obvious decision. In this post, we collected all the most important smartphone line-ups that were axed in 2019. We included all those line-ups which had at least a phone released in 2018 but they did not have a successor this year.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro

Despite the amazingly high value for money of the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 released in December 2018, Asus did not release a new device from the Zenfone Max Pro series this year. This left a lot of people disappointed since the Zenfone Max Pro M2 was one of the best battery phones and also one of the devices with the highest quality price ratio. This year, Asus upgraded the Zenfone Max line-up with two models: Zenfone Max Plus and Zenfone Max Shot, both with Snapdragon SiP processors and not as impressive as the Zenfone Max Pro M2.

Xiaomi Mi Max

Earlier this year, Xiaomi decided to discontinue the Mi Max smartphones line-up. It was the series with the biggest phablets from the company and it included all of its devices with a display diagonal closest to 7 inches. They were unique phones due to their huge display size and you can not currently find a lot of devices with so big screens. Yet the company decided to ax it and started focusing more on Redmi mid-range smartphones. Initially, the company was supposed to ax the Mi Note line-up as well, but then it came up with the Mi Note 10 which is currently one of the best camera phones out there.

Samsung Galaxy J and On

Samsung decided to completely discontinue the Galaxy J series and replaced it with the Galaxy M lineup. The Galaxy J series included its most affordable phones and it ranged from entry-level to mid-range smartphones. The reason why it axed the J series was probably the need for increasing the competition with Chinese manufacturers by providing a more unique and advanced series of affordable devices. Even the Galaxy On series was axed: in case you never heard of it, Galaxy On was a successful series of smartphones only present in the Asian market.

BlackBerry

The Chinese giant TCL acquired BlackBerry a few years ago and started producing smartphones under its name. But after releasing the Key2 LE in 2018 with a physical QWERTY keyboard and midrange specifications, the company decided that it is not the case to go ahead. In October, TCL announced that it has no plans to release a 5G BlackBerry smartphone. Further, it did not release a BlackBerry-banded device this year.

Lenovo S

Another interesting smartphone released in 2018 was the Lenovo S5 Pro GT: for less than €200, it offered a great Snapdragon 660 chipset, stereo speakers and a 3D facial recognition system, as well as a dual front camera and a telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom. But in 2019, we did not see any Lenovo S6 Pro. Fortunately, the company released Lenovo Z6 which offers an even higher value for money, but the S series contained even more affordable devices. That is why we hope it will come up again with a new device from this series next year.

Sony Xperia Compact

Another smartphone missing among the most unique ones this year is a Compact flagship from the Sony Xperia series. In 2019 Sony revolutionized the naming scheme of its smartphones starting from Sony Xperia 1. The new line-up did not include an Xperia 1 Compact, but the company still launched a flagship with modest dimensions: Xperia 5. It offers the Snapdragon 855 chipset and a 6.1-inch display, but it is not the most compact phone out there.

Motorola Moto Z flagship

Sadly, Motorola did not release any flagship smartphone this year. Motorola Moto Z3 was the last one and it came in August 2018. This year Moto Z4 debuted, but it is just a midrange phone. Instead, the company decided to release the Motorola Razr 2019: a revival of the iconic Razr feature phone which is also its first foldable phone. However, it is packed with midrange specifications, including a Snapdragon 710 chipset.

Oppo Find

After years of not releasing any flagship, Oppo came up with the Find X in 2018. It packed the most powerful Snapdragon chipset as well as a very revolutionary design including a motorized pop-up slider hiding all the cameras while closed. But in 2019 the Oppo Find X did not have a successor. Instead, the company launched a flagship under the Reno line-up: Reno 10x zoom. But Oppo already confirmed that Oppo Find X2 will debut in the first part of 2020, so stay tuned for more.

HTC U flagship

HTC is living a strong year over year decline in the smartphone sector, but this year it saw a slight growth. But it was not because of the sales of a flagship phone. Unlike the previous years, in 2019 HTC only released mid-range and entry-level devices. The latest flagship is the HTC U12+ launched in the middle of 2018. And despite it was an amazing flagship, it did not succeed. That is why it is easy to realize why it does not have a successor. We hope the company will try again next year with a 5G flagship.

Pocophone

In 2018 Xiaomi launched a new brand: Poco. It included one single device: the affordable flagship Pocophone F1 offering all the power of the Snapdragon 845 and a big battery for an incredible price. There was no Pocophone F2 this year, but a few days ago the company confirmed that we will hear more about Poco in 2020!

We have seen a huge amount of revolutionary and amazing smartphones in 2019, but obviously not every amazing phone succeeded. 2019 was the year of foldable phones and 5G, but a lot of companies also launched awesome flagship killers and devices with an incredibly high value for money. Some of these devices are simply awesome and they deserved a lot of success, but it seems that just a small number of people realized their awesomeness and they turned out to be flops. Through this post, we tried to make some justice and we collected all the devices we consider the most underrated smartphones of 2019. If you are looking for a new device, we think you should definitely give a chance to one of the handsets in this list.

Top underrated smartphones of the year

Lenovo Z6

We think Lenovo Z6 is definitely the most underrated affordable smartphone of 2019. If you do not agree, tell us one single phone offering the power of the Snapdragon 730 chipset for less than 200 bucks. The Lenovo Z6 is also equipped with an amazing display: an OLED panel with a 120 Hz sampling rate (but 60Hz refresh rate) just like the iPhone Xs. Further, it has support for HDR10 and it even provides a high DCI P3 coverage.

Also, the Lenovo Z6 seems to be the most lightweight device packing a 4000 mAh battery: weighing just 159 grams! Last but not least, it features a triple camera with 2x optical zoom.

Asus Zenfone 6

Asus Zenfone 6 is the world’s first smartphone with dual flip-up rear cameras allowing the special dual-camera setup found on this device to be used both as rear cameras and front cameras. But this is not the only revolution: you can actually regulate the position of the cameras so that you can set them at any angle between 0 and 180°. For example, by rotating it by 90 degrees, you can take a photo of the ceiling without moving your smartphone. Let’s not forget that Asus Zenfone 6 also comes with a huge 5000 mAh battery making it one of the best flagships in terms of battery life. The phone even supports reverse charging so that you can use it as a power bank. Other impressive features are its notch-less display, stereo speakers, Snapdragon 855 chipset, and revamped ZenUI which is now close to stock Android. ASUS also promised it will get updated to Android 11.

Meizu 16T

This year Meizu released an amazing flagship killer but no one seems to have noticed it. We are talking about the Meizu 16T. It comes with a powerful Snapdragon 855 chipset and UFS 3.0 internal storage, as well as a big 4500 mAh battery, but its listing price starts from less than $350 (and let’s not talk about street prices)! Usually, at that price, you can only find mid-rangers with Snapdragon 7xx series processors. You even get stereo speakers and a notch-less AMOLED display with very narrow bezels. Xiaomi Mi 9T (Redmi K20)

The Xiaomi Mi 9T (also known as Redmi K20 in the Asian market) was literally overshadowed by its Pro version: Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro aka Redmi K20 Pro. That is why a lot of people ignored it. But it is very hard to find a so balanced mid-ranger at its price. First of all, it has a very nice hardware department (Snapdragon 730 and at least 6 GB of RAM) and a big 4000 mAh battery. It even packs pretty interesting cameras including a telephoto sensor. Further, it has an innovative design thanks to a notch-less display and a pop-up camera. And thanks to online street prices, it is even available for less than €250 globally.

LG G8X ThinQ

Let’s go back to underrated flagship smartphones with the LG G8X ThinQ. It does not have any weak point and its price is also very interesting, yet it did not succeed. You can even get it with an accessory bringing an additional display, so it can be even considered an affordable alternative to foldable phones. Just like most of the LG phones, it has military certification and it is even waterproof. It offers top-notch performance thanks to the Snapdragon 855 chipset and UFS 2.1 storage. It has a big 4000 mAh battery with wireless charging and even a great rear camera with OIS. Yet there was never a lot of hype around it?

Honor 20 Pro

The U.S. ban changed a lot of things for Huawei. The company did not even launch the latest flagship series from its sub-brand in the European market. Huawei sales declined after the ban and the same happened to Honor. But the Honor 20 Pro is one of the most compact flagship smartphones and the best Android camera phone under 6.3-inch. It mounts a 48 MP quad camera with OIS, 3x optical zoom and a dedicated macro lens. Despite its small dimensions, it packs a 4000 mAh battery and it even has a flagship-class hardware department with the Kirin 980 chipset. The punch-hole display makes it even more attractive.

Nubia Z20

The potentialities of a dual display are huge, but it seems most people do not think the same, given the small resonance of the Nubia Z20. The device is equipped with two displays: a traditional panel on the front and a smaller OLED panel on the back. Thanks to the secondary display it is easier to use the smartphone with one hand, you can save battery due to the lower resolution and you can even use the rear cameras as selfie cameras. Indeed, this device does not even pack a front camera in order to provide a truly full-screen experience. But it was incredibly nice rear cameras with a 48 MP main sensor (with OIS!), a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and a 16 MP ultrawide sensor. Its affordable price, the Snapdragon 855+ SoC and its big battery are contributing to making its value for money incredible, yet the public did not seem to appreciate it that much.

That is why we think it is time to recap the most important products in the mobile sector and select the best phones launched in the first half of 2019. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom

Reno 10x zoom is currently the most popular Oppo flagship and it is the first phone to come with the revolutionary 10x hybrid zoom, an amazing proprietary technology showcased for the first time a few months ago. The phone is equipped with a periscopic sensor which is able to zoom up to 10x with minimal loss in detail. The 10x hybrid zoom technology combines 5x optical zoom and digital zoom in order to obtain the satisfying results that we all have seen in Oppo Reno 10x zoom’s camera samples. The handset is also equipped with a wide 6.6-inch display, a huge 4065 mAh, and the best chipset by Qualcomm: the octa-core Snapdragon 855 running at a max frequency of 2.84 GHz. Last but not least, it has a revolutionary bezel-less design with a shark fin pop-up camera.

Huawei P30 Pro

With the P30 Pro, Huawei totally reinvented the world of photography on mobile devices. This flagship is not only equipped with a quad camera setup, but it totally redefines the RGB paradigm by replacing the green color with yellow (RYYB). Thanks to this solution, the P30 Pro is able to capture a huge amount of light in order to shoot incredibly bright photos even in very low light conditions. Just in case it was not enough, Huawei P30 Pro also features 5x optical zoom which pushes the digital zoom up to 50x. Another advantage of the Huawei P30 Pro is the huge 4200 mAh battery which even supports reverse wireless charging (it can be used as a power bank to charge other devices).

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G

The Galaxy S10 5G is the first Samsung’s device to support 5G connectivity, but it is also one of the most powerful beasts in today’s market. It has a huge 6.7-inch display with stunning quality, in my opinion, the best display you can see on a phone in terms of image quality. It comes with a 5G modem (a multi-mode modem in the European version, supporting 4G too) and one of the biggest battery you can find on a flagship phone (4500 mAh) with the support for reverse wireless charging. Alongside all these beautiful things, there is also an amazing camera department with the most amazing selfie camera I personally have ever seen on a mobile phone and a variable focal aperture for the rear camera which helps to capture good photos in low light.

Another device which deserves a honourable mention in this list is the Galaxy S10e: it is not the most expensive flagship from Samsung, but it is the only real compact flagship from this year (it is powered by either Snapdragon 855 or Exynos 9820 depending on the market), and its price is relatively affordable considering its specs sheet and features. It even supports some innovative features of its costlier siblings Galaxy S10 and S10+, such as reverse wireless charging and it comes with a very nice punch-hole design, especially in the Canary Yellow color variant.

OnePlus 7 Pro

With the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Chinese company OnePlus stopped releasing just affordable flagship and moved to the top-tier segment. This flagship comes with features that take on top-tier smartphones at a cheaper price segment. It is one of the fastest handsets in the market thanks to the Snapdragon 855 chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM and a very smooth user interface. It has one of the most stunning displays with a QHD resolution and a 90 Hz refresh ratio, as well as the HDR10+ standard and a wide 6.67-inch diagonal. Even its camera is amazing with a bright f/1.6 aperture and OIS.

Asus Zenfone 6

Asus Zenfone 6 is another camera innovator, but not mainly for its camera quality. It is the first smartphone with a flip-up camera and it allows the user to adjust the position of the rear cameras to click photos comfortably at any angle. Asus Zenfone 6 is also the latest-gen flagship with the biggest battery: it is equipped with a mammoth 5000mAh unit which lasts up to three days with moderate use and supports reverse charging (non-wireless). Despite coming with a Snapdragon 855, a great camera department and a huge battery, it still carries an affordable price tag.

Redmi K20 Pro (Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro)

Launched in the European market as the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro, the Redmi K20 Pro could become the most loved affordable flagship of the year due to its amazing price tag and its perfect specs sheet. It has almost everything an advanced user needs while still being cheaper as compared to the other flagships. You get an HDR display, an elegant design, a pop-up camera, the Snapdragon 855 SoC and even a big battery at a ridiculous price.

Last but not least, even the camera setup is amazing, with a triple sensor and very fast and accurate autofocus. As for now, if we had to recommend an affordable flagship for its value for money, we would surely go for the Redmi K20 Pro.

Honor 20 Pro

Honor is Huawei’s sub-brand that focuses on quality-price ratio, but the Honor 20 Pro is a bit more than a simple affordable flagship. On its rear side, it sports one of the most advanced camera department we have ever seen, including four sensors with a dedicated macro camera, OIS and 3x optical zoom. There is obviously a flagship-class hardware side with the Kirin 980 chipset and 8 GB of RAM, as well as a big 4000 mAh battery. The Honor 20 Pro also comes with a punch-hole display minimizing the bezels without the need of a notch or a pop-up slider.

Overall, the first half of 2019 was a really good year for the smartphone industry. From punch hole displays to pop-up cameras, smartphone manufacturers have worked hard to minimize the bezels around the display and offer maximum screen real estate.
