Today, the China-based company posted a message on microblogging platform Weibo stating &#8220;Urgent notice: A big wave of cuteness is coming.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the short preview video accompanied with that post, it shows the 3D form of the cartoon avatar with facial expressions to make it look funny. From the looks of it, the feature seems similar to that of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/">Apple</a>&#8216;s Animoji feature which was launched along with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-x/">iPhone X</a> and is based on Face ID.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-193226 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Xiaomi-Mi-8-poster-b-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi Mi 8 Poster" width="903" height="696" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Xiaomi-Mi-8-poster-b-1.jpg 903w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Xiaomi-Mi-8-poster-b-1-300x231.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Xiaomi-Mi-8-poster-b-1-768x592.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Xiaomi-Mi-8-poster-b-1-285x220.jpg 285w" sizes="(max-width: 903px) 100vw, 903px" /></p>
<p>The Xiaomi Mi 8 is reportedly <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/05/15/alleged-xiaomi-mi-8s-3d-facial-recognition-module-appears-in-leaked-photo/">equipped with a structured light 3D module</a> that will enable 3D facial recognition feature on the phone. The module is rumored to be packed with selfie camera, proximity sensor, ambient sensor, infrared lens, flood illuminator and dot projector, enabling users to unlock the phone just by scanning their face in 3D.</p>
<p>The module is expected to work perfectly even in low-light conditions. Thus, it is speculated that the Mi 8 will become the first <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android/">Android</a> smartphone to come with 3D facial recognition feature. A recently released poster also hints at the presence of under-display fingerprint reader on the smartphone.</p>
<p>As far as the phone&#8217;s specifications are concerned, the Mi 8 is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/05/24/xiaomi-mi-8-full-specifications-leaked-a-week-before-its-official-debut/">expected to come with</a> a 6.2-inch notched OLED display that will include support for 19:9 aspect ratio and Full-HD+ screen resolution. The Qualcomm&#8217;s flagship Snapdragon 845 processor will be powering the smartphone along with 6GB of RAM. The device is likely to arrive with 128GB of storage and is also is expected to arrive with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/05/23/miui-10-launching-on-may-31-xiaomi-mi-8-likely-to-come-preinstalled-with/">MIUI 10 pre-installed</a>.</p>
<p>Recently leaked photos of the Mi 8&#8217;s retail box reveals that it will come with dual-frequency GPS that provides a greater level of accuracy than what is currently available. The technology was announced at a conference last year by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/broadcom/">Broadcom</a>. The BCM47755 chip offers 30-centimeter accuracy instead of current 5-meter accuracy and consumes about 50 percent less power and enhance location-based services.</p>

<p>Further, the smartphone could include a 3,300mAh battery, a 16-megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, and 20-megapixel with f/1.7 aperture + 16-megapixel with f/2.0 aperture dual camera setup on the back. The Xiaomi Mi 8 is likely to be available in four colors &#8212; Grey, Gold, Blue, and Red and carry a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/05/23/chinese-offline-store-lists-xiaomi-mi-8-for-%c2%a52999-pre-order-begins-may-31/">price tag of 2,999 Yuan</a>, which roughly converts to $469.</p>

At the launch event, the company demonstrated the “future innovations” that will be coming on its upcoming smartphones. It showcased a 3D facial recognition feature that seems to function like the Face ID feature on the <a href="http://http;//www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-x/">Apple iPhone X</a>. Moreover, it also introduced animated emoji that was first seen on the iPhone X.</p>
<p>During the launch event of iPhone X in September, Apple introduced the Face ID biometric recognition feature that allow its users to unlock it by scanning their face. The face scanning feature depends on a complex <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/10/26/apple-iphone-x-face-ids-accuracy-reportedly-reduced-release-time/">TrueDepth Camera system</a> that includes a dot projector, flood illuminator and an infrared camera. The Cupertino company had also introduced Animoji that can be created by letting the TrueDepth Camera analyze the facial expressions of the user and mirror those expressions in numerous animated emojis.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-159762 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-3D-Face-Scanning-System.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei's 3D Face Scanning System" width="728" height="393" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-3D-Face-Scanning-System.jpg 728w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-3D-Face-Scanning-System-300x162.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></p>
<p>The above image shows Huawei’s iteration of an upper notch for a smartphone that includes an RGB camera, an IR camera, a pair of RGB LEDs, a proximity light sensor, and a VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) projector.</p>
<p>The 3D facial recognition feature from Huawei will be able to build a detailed model of the user’s face by scanning 300,000 points on it in 10 seconds. The company claimed that it will be able to unlock the phone in 0.4 seconds. It can be not only used for unlocking the phone, but also for making transactions securely.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-159761 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-Animated-Emoji.png?x10805" alt="Huawei's Animated Emoji" width="1372" height="742" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-Animated-Emoji.png 1372w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-Animated-Emoji-300x162.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-Animated-Emoji-768x415.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Huaweis-Animated-Emoji-1024x554.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1372px) 100vw, 1372px" /></p>

<p>Huawei claims that its animated emoji is better than Apple’s Animoji as its system delivers more detailed mapping of the facial expressions. It can also track the movement of the tongue so that the animated characters can create goofy expressions.</p>
<p>The Honor V10 has a facial recognition feature, but it does include the new 3D facial recognition feature and animated emoji. It is likely that these features may get introduced on the upcoming Huawei P11 flagship phone next year.</p>
