<p>Apple marketed the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-a16-bionic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">A16 Bionic chip</a> in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 14 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro-max/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">14 Pro Max</a> as being manufactured on a 4nm process. However, a new rumor suggests that the chip was actually internally labeled as a 5nm part, and not a 4nm one.</p>

<h2><strong>Apple A16 Bionic: 5nm chip internally, 4nm chip externally?</strong></h2>

<p>According to tipster @URedittor, the A16 Bionic chip was advertised as a 4nm chip but was actually referred to internally as a 5nm chip. If the tipster&#8217;s claims are true, then Apple&#8217;s marketing of the A16 Bionic chip as being manufactured on a 4nm process is nothing more than a marketing gimmick.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">An interesting tidbit about the A16 &#8211; looks like the whole “4nm” thing was apparently a marketing gimmick, I’ve seen it labeled as a 5nm chip internally.<br><br>This does not Apply to the A17, that one is undoubtedly 3nm, so it should be a more significant upgrade. <a href="https://t.co/GjE8XWcLch">https://t.co/GjE8XWcLch</a></p>&mdash; Unknownz21 <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.1.0/72x72/1f308.png" alt="🌈" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> (@URedditor) <a href="https://twitter.com/URedditor/status/1693654077702304089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 21, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
</div></figure>

<p>Jason Cross of Macworld also <a href="https://www.macworld.com/article/1073243/a16-processor-cpu-gpu-lpddr5-memory-performance.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">covered</a> this topic back in October, after the launch of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 14</a> series. He analyzed the design of the A16 chip and concluded that it is mostly the same as the A15<em>. </em>Cross stated the point:</p>

<div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;">
The chip is manufactured on a new “4 nanometer” process from TSMC, according to Apple, making it the first such processor in a smartphone. It’s worth noting, however, that TSMC’s “N4” process is not a 4nm process in the truest sense, with TSMC itself even calling it “an enhanced version of N5 technology.” While it’s a more advanced process than earlier A series processors, it is not a real next-generation silicon manufacturing process.<br />
</div></div>

<p>Regardless, the leakster suggests that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/13/apples-3nm-a17-bionic-beats-qualcomms-4nm-snapdragon-8-gen-3-for-galaxy-in-alleged-benchmark-test/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple A17 Bionic </a>chip will be made on a 3nm process, which could lead to a significant performance boost over the A16 Bionic. Previously, it was rumored that the A17 Bionic would be up to 31% faster than the A16 Bionic in single-core and multi-core tests. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-A16-Bionic.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-560315" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-A16-Bionic.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-A16-Bionic-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-A16-Bionic-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-A16-Bionic-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-A16-Bionic-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Apple&#8217;s A16 Bionic chip may be a 5nm chip despite being marketed as a 4nm chip</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>This makes the upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/17/iphone-15-pro-aluminum-prototype-surfaces/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 15 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-15-pro-max/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 15 Pro Max</a> even more enticing, as they are said to be the only models that will be equipped with the A17 Bionic. The less expensive <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-15/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 15</a> and<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-15-plus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> iPhone 15 Plus</a> are likely to be powered by the A16 Bionic.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MediaTek </a>is apparently gearing up to launch its latest flagship level processor, which is rumored to be called the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/dimensity-9200/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dimensity 9200</a> SoC. Now, a new report has revealed that this upcoming chipset could outperform the Apple A16 Bionic in synthetic benchmarks. So here are all the details.</p>

<p>As per previous rumors, the chipmaking giant is working on a new flagship grade processor that will offer major improvements in performance over its predecessors. But prior to any announcements, a tipster has revealed new information regarding the Dimesnity 9200 SoC&#8217;s synthetic benchmark performance. Apparently, the GF Benchmark score of the upcoming MediaTek chipset managed to come as a surprise as it managed to outclass the Apple A16 Bionic chip.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265-1024x576.jpg?x10805" alt="MediaTek" class="wp-image-493069" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/mediatek-dimensity-9200-1-1666097265.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>For those unware, this is the same chip that powered the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. Apple processors have typically been slightly ahead of their Android counterparts in some areas, so it arrives as a surprise that MediaTek managed to edge ahead of the Cupertino based giant&#8217;s latest silicon. As per an <em><a href="https://www.ithome.com/0/650/010.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ITHome </a></em>report, the Dimensity 9200 SoC will be equipped on some premium grade flagship handsets that will launch later this year and next year as well.</p>

<p>The leak claims that the Dimensity 9200 managed to get a score of 328fps in the GFX 1080p Manhattan 3.0 off screen Test. This chip also reportedly scored 228 fps in Manhattan 3.1 off screen tests. For comparison, the Apple A16 Bionic only managed a score of 280 fps and 200 fps on these same tests respectively. Similarly, it even managed to edge ahead of the Dimensity 9000+, which scored 220 fps and 160 fps respectively, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 that scored 281 fps and 188 fps respectively.</p>

<p>As per known tipster Digital Chat Station, we also have some information regarding the chips core configuration. The Dimensity 9200 might have a maximum clock speed of 3.05GHz and a base frequency of 2.85GHz. On the other hand, its efficiency based cores wil supposedly run at 2.0GHz. This CPU will be paired with the Mali G715 GPU, which brings a combined score of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/10/26/mediatek-dimensity-9200-antutu-benchmark-shows-massive-improvements-in-gpu-performance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">1,266,102 on AnTuTu</a>. It is the higheset ever score on the platform. Keep in mind that this is till just an unconfirmed report so take this news with a pinch of salt for now.</p>

<p style="color: #252525;">The well-known tipster <a style="color: #252525;" href="https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1567794015034298370" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ice Universe</a> has shared a Geekbench result of what appears to be an A16 Bionic-powered iPhone. It is unclear if it is the Pro or the Pro Max model; however, the benchmark in itself isn&#8217;t that impressive. The new chip scores 1879 points on the single-core test and 4664 points on the multi-core test. For comparison, the A15-equipped iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max models usually manage scores of around 1730 points on the single-core tests and 4700 points on the multi-core tests.</p>
<p style="color: #252525;">If this is indeed the Geekbench score of an A16-equipped iPhone, it might answer the question of why Apple chose to compare the chipset to the older A13 Bionic rather than the A15 Bionic chipset of last year. The company might have opted to go with more efficiency rather than performance this time around, as it has claimed that the chips consume 20% less power than before.</p>
