<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> has been working on expanding its lineup of hardware portfolio with the launch of a couple of new devices aiming to make the company future-proof. The technology giant has been working on VR/AR headsets and AR Glasses.</p>

<p>Apple AR Glasses, which is a different product from the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mixed-reality">mixed reality</a> or AR/VR headset that the company is planning to launch later this year, has reportedly been delayed for launch yet again.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="512" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses-1024x512.jpeg?x10805" alt="Apple AR Glasses" class="wp-image-509835" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses-1024x512.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses-300x150.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses-768x384.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses-696x348.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses-1068x534.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses-840x420.jpeg 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Apple-AR-Glasses.jpeg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>As per the latest report, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-ar-glasses">Apple AR Glasses</a> have been put on hold or postponed indefinitely due to technical issues. Earlier, the device was set to debut this year but was postponed to 2024 or 2025, and now it appears to have been put on hold without any release timeline.</p>

<p>Apple isn&#8217;t the only one working on AR Glasses or similar hardware. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a>, which started all these with Google Glasses, is working on a new device under Project Iris, while Meta is working on Nazare, both of which are expected to debut in 2024.</p>

<p>While the AR Glasses-type products won&#8217;t be ready to wear full-time for users, companies like Google and Meta have taken an alternate approach. Google says that it would begin testing prototypes while <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/meta">Meta</a>&#8216;s Nazare, Artemis, and Hypernova products will initially be given only to developers. This buys the company enough time to work on the device that users can use for an extended period of time without any side effects.</p>

<p>Apple&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-ar">AR/VR</a> or Mixed Reality Headset is set to debut with a price tag of around $3,000 and packing desktop-like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-m2">M2 chip</a>. However, the company is expected to launch a relatively cheaper model in 2024 or 2025 with a starting price closer to around $1,500, which will compete against the products like Meta Quest Pro.</p>

<p>Now, a new report from analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong Intl Tech Research (<em><a href="https://9to5mac.com/2022/06/20/apple-ar-glass-iphone-15-pro-periscope/">via 9to5Mac</a></em>) claims that the upcoming AR Glass headset has now entered the design development stage.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-436608 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png?x10805" alt="Apple" width="682" height="385" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png 682w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300-300x169.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></p>
<p>He also claims that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-ar-glass">AR Glass</a> product would be coming in the second half of 2024. The report further adds that Luxshare would remain one of Apple’s main suppliers for devices to come between late 2022 and 2024.</p>
<p>As for the development of the AR Glass, he adds that the product has now entered the design development stage in which the prototype will be ready by the end of this year while the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/production">mass production</a> will start in the second half of 2024.</p>
<p>Apart from this AR/VR product, the Cupertino-based technology company is expected to announce a similar product later this year or early next year which is 100% focused on the augmented reality (AR) technology.</p>
<p>If the reports are to be believed, then the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mixed-reality">mixed reality</a> headset from Apple will focus on media content, gaming, and communication. It could be powered by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-silicon">Apple Silicon</a> M-series chip and offer a high-resolution displays, along with several sensors and cameras.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-436608 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png?x10805" alt="Apple AR Headset" width="682" height="385" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png 682w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300-300x169.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></p>
<p>Sources aware of the development in the supply chain <a href="https://english.etnews.com/20220224200001">have said</a> that Apple is entering the second round of pre-production tests on the AR headset.</p>
<p>Earlier, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said that the Cupertino-based giant will launch the headset “with the same computing power level as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-mac">Mac</a>,” with its chip design being the major difference between the AR headset from other brands.</p>
<p>While the launch date for the Apple <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ar-headset">AR headset</a> isn&#8217;t known at this time, reports indicate that the device could go official sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.</p>
<p>South Korean tech giant Samsung is also working on its first AR headset and the company has reportedly formed a task force that is focused on working with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/microsoft">Microsoft</a> to develop further AR headsets.</p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s AR headset is said to use hologram technology and has been developed over an extended period by the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. It is said to be based on the Exynos processor and will use Google&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android">Android</a> as the operating system.</p>

While the company has not revealed what that project is, a new report claims that it is the company&#8217;s upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/augmented-reality">augmented reality</a>, virtual reality, or mixed reality headset.</p>
<p>Currently, Mike Rockwell is overseeing the development of an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ar">AR headset</a> at Apple but things don&#8217;t seem to be going well. With Dan Riccio into the mix, Rockwell will handle the day-to-day work on the project while Riccio will have oversight over the efforts.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-301818 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="Apple Logo" width="1300" height="648" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo.jpg 1300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo-768x383.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo-1024x510.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo-696x347.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo-1068x532.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Apple-logo-843x420.jpg 843w" sizes="(max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px" /></p>
<p>Riccio has already handed over top-level management of the Apple <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-iphone">iPhone</a> to John Ternus, who will also be the new head of hardware engineering. It has also been confirmed that Johny Srouji will handle the development of a new camera and display technology. He is the same executive that headed the design and engineering of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-silicon">Apple Silicon</a>.</p>
<p>As per the reports, Apple is working on an ultra-high-end 8K <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vr-headset">VR headset</a> that could possibly cost around $3,000. This is surprising given that so far, the company&#8217;s work has been on AR and not VR. The company has been building ARKit, which is a developer API enabling the creation of AR experiences using cameras and sensors of iPhones and iPads.</p>
<p>Based on the information available so far, it seems that the upcoming AR/VR device from Apple will primarily be focusing on the developers or creators and not the mass adoption. We expect to know more about this product in the coming months.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2020/09/apple-invents-a-future-vrar-headset-that-delivers-images-directly-to-the-users-pupils-via-mini-projectors.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>PatentlyApple</em> </a>report, the device detailed in the patents works to direct a retinal projector system that provides dynamic focusing for a head mounted display. Through this, a superior experience is delivered in either VR (virtual reality) or AR (augmented reality) than what the current generation achieves. This is also quite different from the traditional system of displaying content in a headset.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>UP NEXT: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/25/qualcomm-snapdragon-775g-6nm-launch-soon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm to soon launch Snapdragon 775G chipset manufactured using 6nm process</a></strong></h6>
<p>The Apple patent also covers an apparatus and method for providing dynamic focusing on virtual reality or augmented reality. While conventional VR systems project images left to right on a screen that is viewed by the user, a direct retinal projector system scans images, pixels by pixel, and sends it directly to the retinas. This method could allow for AR/VR content to have another level of depth and immersion in each scene. In other words, the system could adjust the depth of the content being displays in accordance with the user&#8217;s positional in VR or AR.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-344432 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/6a0120a5580826970c026bde9599b3200c-800wi.jpg?x10805" alt="Apple" width="425" height="714" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/6a0120a5580826970c026bde9599b3200c-800wi.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/6a0120a5580826970c026bde9599b3200c-800wi-178x300.jpg 178w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/6a0120a5580826970c026bde9599b3200c-800wi-768x1291.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/6a0120a5580826970c026bde9599b3200c-800wi-609x1024.jpg 609w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/6a0120a5580826970c026bde9599b3200c-800wi-696x1170.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/6a0120a5580826970c026bde9599b3200c-800wi-250x420.jpg 250w" sizes="(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px" /></p>
<p>The system could even help to minimize or eliminate the convergence-accommodation conflict in VR systems. Apple detailed the system through various detailed sketches in the patent. Unfortunately, it is still too early to tell if the Cupertino based giant is actually working on such a device or whether it is just covering all bases and patenting the technology, which might make an appearance of its upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-glass/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple Glasses</a>.</p>

It will be a new and independent product line from the company that is speculated to debut in 2019.</p>
<p>Like the Apple Watch, the forthcoming AR headset from the Cupertino-based company is expected to feature its own microprocessor. Also, the company will be introducing a new kind of operating system called rOS for its new AR headset. It seems to be a customized version of iOS like watchOS and tvOS. It is also pegged to feature its own version of App Store.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-157375 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Apple-AR.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1000" height="643" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Apple-AR.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Apple-AR-300x193.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Apple-AR-768x494.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>

<p>Unlike the existing VR headsets that requires users to make use of a smartphone as an engine, the Apple AR headset that is rumored to debut in 2019 will have its own screen. Apple is yet to finalize on how users will be controlling the AR device. Initial reports claim that Apple is considering options like voice-commands through Siri, head gestures and touch. There is no information on the design of the device. However, initial reports suggest that it may look like Google Glass.</p>
<p>Apple is rumored to be working on this upcoming AR headset since a couple of years. It is speculated that the AR device from the company may be unveiled to the world in 2019 and it could be available for buying by early 2020.</p>
