Apple reportedly saved $6.5 billion by removing charger & EarPods from iPhone box

Back in 2020, Apple had launched the iPhone 12 series without a charger and EarPods within the box. The company had cited various reasons for this move, and now, a new report has revealed that this saved billions of US dollars for the brand.

When the Cupertino based giant first announced that it would be removing the charger and EarPods, many felt that the company is just trying to save more of its profits despite it officially stating environmentally friendly reasons. It also claimed that the benefit of removing the two items include smaller packing boxes, which allowed for 70 percent more devices to fit in a shipping pallet. Thus, more boxed meant that Apple could ship more iPhones at a time.

This would enable it to also reduce its yearly carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons, which the company claims is equivalent to around 500,000 cars off the road. But according to a Daily Mail report, the iPhone maker might have saved around 5 billion Pounds so far after removing the charger and EarPods from the box, which roughly translates to about 6.5 billion US Dollars. In other words, the company may have removed the basic accessories from the box to make up for the cost of the new 5G modem on its iPhones.

Notably, reducing the retail box also means that the company can reduce its shipping costs by around 40 percent. This, in turn, should lower the price of the phone to consumers. Furthermore, the brand is also now receiving additional revenue from customers that buy EarPods or AirPods and the charging brick separately. So, it won’t be a surprise if it managed to save up such a large sum in just two years.

Apple stopped packing EarPods inside iPhone boxes long ago but France continued to get them for a long time. What made Apple do this is the legal requirement related to radio-frequency energy which makes headphones a necessary item and needs to be included in the box with smartphones. However, this law has now been changed.

According to a new report by MacRumors, starting January 24, 2022, Apple will no longer provide EarPods in the box when you purchase a new iPhone. The law which previously compelled Apple to include a “handsfree kit,” with their smartphones has now been changed in favor of reducing the environmental footprint of digital devices.

Apple had made the environment-friendly move back in 2020 when they stopped including EarPods and the charging brick with the iPhone 12, significantly reducing the size of its box.

This new law is not only applicable to apple but all the smartphone manufacturers in France as it no longer forces them to include headphones in the box. Instead, they just need to ensure that compatible headphones are available separately as an optional accessory.

The French carrier Frac has posted a notice in their store stating: “DEAR CUSTOMERS, We would like to inform you that our manufacturers are no longer required to supply headphones/hands-free kits with their smartphones in France. This new law, adopted in late 2021, aims to reduce the environmental footprint in France.

The Xiaomi brand is concerned, for products purchased from the week of January 17, 2022. The same will be true for the Apple brand as of from the week of January 24, 2022

For now, Apple’s French website continues to show EarPods an included item in the box alongside a USB-C to Lightning cable which is likely to change soon.

Apple’s environment-friendly initiative, although controversial, is becoming standard practice in the premium smartphone segment. However, some regions have pushed back against it with Brazil fining the Cupertino tech giant $1.9 million in March 2021 for not including chargers in the iPhone 12. After which the company was forced to offer chargers to anyone requesting it.

Apple continues to deliver EarPods with iPhone 13 in France

Apple stopped packing EarPods inside iPhone boxes long ago but France continued to get them for a long time. Apple is selling the iPhone 13 with EarPods inside the box in France. What makes Apple do this is the legal requirement related to radio-frequency energy which makes headphones a necessary item and needs to be included in the box with smartphones.

Many countries have set a legal restriction on radio-frequency (RF) power output as it may have the potential to pose mental harm. Well, even though Apple has designed iPhones in such a way that proximity sensor detects when the phone is held close to the head and therefore, reduces the RF output, this isn’t sufficient enough and the company will have to adhere to the country rules.

France encourages its citizens to avoid holding their phones close to their heads. Instead, the government recommends using headphones that can help evade high frequencies. It is because of this reason, smartphone brands in France have to pack earplugs along with smartphones as a necessary item. A complete summary of the law and regulation can be found here.

It has been noticed and shared by some users that Apple is including EarPods in the box with the new iPhone 13 series like it was done for iPhone 12 series. The company has smartly placed them in a “box inside of a box” fashion. Unbox the exterior box, you”ll see the iPhone 13 box, hidden below which will be the EarPods box.

This allows Apple to utilize the same iPhone 13 box it uses globally and still make it possible to include EarPods inside them, specifically for France.
