Apple’s iPhones are one of the most popular smartphone series across the globe. These models are known for their hefty price tags, premium design, capable cameras, and much more. But if you’re thinking of buying an iPhone in India, you might want to think twice. Here’s every reason that you might want to consider an iPhone purchase.

The Apple Tax in India: High Pricing

Apple is perhaps infamous for exorbitant pricing for some of its products. While the iPhone isn’t the only expensive premium phone in the market, it still carries a hefty price tag. In the US, the base iPhone 16 was announced for a starting price tag of 799 US Dollars. This is around 150 US Dollars cheaper than its Indian launch price. In India, the same configuration sells for Rs 79,900 INR.

This is largely due to import duties, taxes, and Apple’s own pricing strategy. So it already becomes less attractive to Indian buyers who traditionally look for value in expensive purchases and flagship Android devices can offer better or similar specs for a lower price tag.

Expensive Repairs and Lack of AppleCare+

The costly purchase is also followed by an equally expensive repair bill. Fixing your iPhone in India is notorious for being expensive. Apple’s authorized centers often charge a premium for out of warranty repairs, making it costly for even minor issues. Furthermore, AppleCare+ in the region isn’t as widespread or affordable as it is in other regions. For those unaware, it is basically a service that lets you extend a warranty and get accidental damage protection. So iPhone owners have to be extra careful to avoid these hefty charges.

Restricted Features and Services

One aspect which is a little more frustrating than the pricing is the lack of certain iPhone features and services in India. A great example of this is Apple Pay, which is a popular mobile payment service in the US. It is still not fully supported in India. My colleague Sudarshan (who owns an iPhone 15) put this point across well in his tweet saying “Lockdown of NFC is a crime in regions where Apple Pay doesn’t exist. What’s the point of paying for the hardware when you can’t use it?”

With contactless payments, UPI, and digital wallets like Google Pay becoming more widely adopted, it is a shame that Apple Pay integration is still sorely lacking. He also stated that the iPhone makes more sense if you’re planning on entering the Apple ecosystem. Once again, you’ll find yourself spending more to buy stuff like MacBooks or Apple Watches for this complete experience.

Better Alternatives from Android

The Indian smartphone market is absolutely dominated by Android devices. Unlike Apple’s iPhones, these Android smartphones are available in multiple price segments, making them more accessible. Brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and others are great examples of this as they provide both flagship and budget smartphones.

For a similar price point, one can easily find Android phones with a faster charging rate, higher resolution displays, more customization, and even better cameras. iPhone does offer a polished user experience and strong software support, but Android are better value for money for budget-conscious Indian consumers. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus still have a 60Hz refresh rate is inexcusable and Apple’s iPhones are generations behind in terms of charging.

While the details of the use of the freshly secured funds remain confidential, industry analysts speculate that the investment could be directed towards expanded capacities for various Apple devices, potentially including the iPhone. Foxconn, responsible for assembling a significant portion of iPhones globally, is making this move amid economic challenges and heightened tensions with the United States, diversifying its manufacturing footprint.

The trend of manufacturing giants, including Foxconn, redirecting capacities away from China has gained momentum, prompted by economic challenges and strained international relations. Apple has already expanded its iPhone production to India via different contract manufacturers. Now, it appears that the largest facility for iPhone production will be established by the Tata Group. So here are all the details.

Tata’s new iPhone factory will be set up in Tamil Nadu

For those unaware, the Apple iPhone is manufactured in facilities from other known suppliers like Foxconn and Wistron. Interestingly, the latter recently struck a deal with Tata, which helped the Indian giant become the first homegrown iPhone maker. Tata Group will be constructing the massive iPhone assembly plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu (South Indian State). This large facility is in line with the Cupertino based giant’s plans to expand iPhone manufacturing in India.

The new Tata iPhone factory is expected to have 20 assembly lines and will create a large number of jobs over the next two years since it could bring in up to 50,000 workers. The new site is expected to become operational within the next 12 to 18 months. Apple is working on expanding its Indian production for iPhones to diversify its supply chain outside of China. The company and its suppliers aim to make over 50 million iPhones annually in India over the course of the next two to three years. Its plans are also bolstered by incentives from the local government.

The PLIs (production-linked incentives) have encouraged key Apple suppliers like Foxconn and Pegatron to increase their foothold in the Indian market. Thanks to such incentives, iPhone assembly in the region has risen significantly, exceeding 7 billion US Dollars in the previous fiscal year and even accounting for 7 percent of Apple’s global production share. The new facility also showcases the growing strategic partnership between Apple and the Tata Group.

Apple switched to the USB-C port on this year’s entire iPhone 15 series. This was mainly due to complying with the norms set by the European Union. The Indian government is also planning to go the EU route in making USB-C ports mandatory on all smartphones. This could pose a challenge that the Cupertino-based tech giant is not happy about. In a closed-door meeting chaired by India’s IT Minister, Apple has urged officials with solutions and the potential impact on production due to the regulation. 

Apple may get hit in India due to EU’s USB-C law

The Indian government wants a universal USB-C charging port as it will help users and also reduce e-waste. The regulation is said to be introduced in June 2025, This is six months after the law gets implemented in the EU. 

In the meeting, Apple officials said that implementing the mandatory USB-C rule would impact the company’s production targets set under the government’s production-linked incentive aka PLI scheme. The exact impact on the production target was not revealed. The Cupertino-based tech giant is seeking an exemption for older iPhones from the universal USB-C mandate. Apple assured that it can adhere to the June 2025 timeline but if older models are not exempted,  the company wants the implementation deadline to be delayed. It would need an additional 18 months beyond 2024. Additionally, as per Reuters report, Apple told Indian officials that the design of the earlier products cannot be changed. 

Seeking an exemption on older iPhones from the USB-C law is understandable as they are a popular choice among Indian consumers. India is a big market for Apple and the company has also been ramping its manufacturing efforts in the country.

Apple to make iPhone batteries in India

iPhone batteries will be made in India by TDK Corp. The Japanese electronics manufacturer is one of Apple’s global suppliers. The company will set up a 180-acre facility in Manesar, Haryana and it will create thousands of several thousand jobs. The cells manufactured at the facility will be supplied to Apple’s li-ion battery assembler Sunwoda Electronics which already operates in India. 

This is a major development as TDK will become the first component manufacturer for the iPhones in the country. Apple’s local production of iPhones in India does not mean that it manufactures the core components required for the smartphone in the country. Instead, the company sources them from China and assembles in India. TDK is reportedly expected to start the commercial production of battery cells in the next 12-18 months. The Japanese company’s entry into making batteries for iPhone in India is a big step towards a fully made in India iPhone. 

Some time back, Indian conglomerate Tata Group took over Wistron’s operations to make iPhones in the country. The Cupertino-based tech giant is aiming to double up its production capacity to 25 percent in India.

Apple to double iPhone 17 production in India

As per a past report earlier this year, Apple has been planning to increase its iPhone manufacturing capacity in India to 25 percent. The latest development from Ming-Chi Kuo also echoes the same. The Cupertino-based tech giant aims to double up its iPhone production capacity in the country. Kuo believes that currently 12-14 percent of the global iPhone shipments in 2023 are made in India units. This would eventually be increased to 20-25 percent. 

The striking bit about the latest development is that Apple will start the iPhone 17 production in India in the second half of 2024. This will mark the first time, the company will begin the manufacturing of a new iPhone model outside China. Kuo reveals that Apple selected the base iPhone 17 because of the lower difficulty associated with design and development thus reducing the risk and error. The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in Fall 2025.

Additionally, Kuo also adds that Foxconn which is Apple’s largest contract manufacturer will slash its iPhone production capacity in Zhengzhou and Taiyuan facilities by 35 – 45 and 75-85 percent respectively. The report comes at a time when Tata Group has acquired Wistron which was Apple’s previous contract manufacturer in India with the former expected commence the production of iPhones from the country for the domestic as well as global markets within two and a half years.

Research firm Counterpoint revealed that the company sold more than 2.5 million iPhone units during the three-month period. It indicated a 34 percent year-on-year growth compared to the corresponding quarter last year. 

While the global smartphone market experiences headwinds due to various factors, Apple’s significant growth in India is great news for the company. However, the Cupertino-based tech giant still continues to have a single-digit market share in the country. It is said to grow to 6 percent from 4.5 percent last year. Apple’s growth is reportedly attributed to consumers’ shifting preferences towards premium smartphones due to financing schemes, discounts, and various offers. 

Counterpoint revealed to TechCrunch that the iPhone 14 Pro accounted for more than a third of iPhone shipments in 2023. Apple is also said to grow by 38 percent in India although the overall smartphone market will contract by 5 percent in 2023.

Politician Mahua Moitra shared her Apple warning on social media, along with a pointed message directed at the government, accusing it of involvement in the state-sponsored attacks.

Fresh offers on iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone SE, and Others

Apple India isn’t offering discounts exclusively on the iPhone 15 lineup but even some older iPhones and some Apple Watch models. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will see a 4,000 INR discount, while the iPhone 13 price tag is lowered by 3,000 INR. The last iPhone model on discount is the iPhone SE, which is discounted by 2,000 INR. Apple’s Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2, and Watch SE now feature a 2,500 INR, 3,000 INR, and 1,500 INR discount respectively.

Keep in mind that these discounts are available through HDFC bank cards and the devices are set to be sold on 22nd September 2023.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Could Be More Affordable Thanks to India Manufacturing

India is steadily becoming one of the world’s major tech hubs. We recently talked about the “Make in India” project and its impact on smartphone production in the country. Following this plan, many tech companies are manufacturing locally in the region. One such company is Foxconn, which produces iPhones for Apple. According to the latest information, Foxconn has started making the iPhone 15 in India.

Apple didn’t just start making the iPhone 15. The company began production in China in the middle of June. But as you know, the tech giant doesn’t want to rely only on China for production. Even though it might save costs, depending on just one place can cause big problems in the supply chain, like we saw during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Also Apple hopes that making the iPhone 15 in India will help to make it more affordable for consumers in the country. India is one of the world’s biggest smartphone markets. However, because of the country’s economic situation, many people choose cheaper and mid-range phones. If Apple can reduce costs by producing locally and avoid some taxes, they can offer better prices and reach more people, increasing their market share.

The Foxconn factory in Sriperumbudur is one of the biggest electronics manufacturing plants in the world, and it employs over thousands of people. The factory is equipped with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and it is capable of producing a wide range of products, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

The new iPhone 15 series is expected to be announced on September 12th. It will have major upgrades to the camera system and the Pro models will have an improved processor. Apple is hoping that the new iPhone will help to revive flagging sales.

Apple experiences significant quarterly growth in India

Apple reported a 70 percent growth year-on-year in terms of iPhone shipments in India in Q2, 2023. The current generation iPhone 14 series as well as its predecessor, the iPhone 13 lineup contributed to the company’s stellar performance. Notably, the older iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models also drove Apple’s growth. The Cupertino-based tech giant had a larger share of the premium smartphone segment in India. 

In Q2, 2023 i.e. from April to July, the iPhone 13 was the best-performing iPhone in India. It had the highest market share of 52 percent owning to online sales and minor differences between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 non-pro variants. The iPhone 14 series registered 45 percent of iPhone shipments during the same quarter. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 series also contributed two and one percent respectively to Apple’s growth. 

Apart from iPhones, Apple’s iPad lineup also witnessed growth in India. The iPad 9th generation was the most popular with a 42 percent market share followed by the 10th generation with 22 percent share. The 2022 iPad Air and iPad Pro series recorded 18 percent and 16 percent market share, respectively.

Apple’s Long-Awaited Entry into the Indian Digital Payments Market

Establishing a payment system is a complicated process, as each country has its own legal requirements. As a result, companies must go through a lengthy legal process before they can start operating in a new country. Apple is no stranger to this process, as it has had to go through it in every country where it has launched its payment system. The company is now restarting talks with Indian authorities about launching Apple Pay in the country.

We say “restarts” because this isn’t the first rodeo for the company. Apple has been trying to launch Apple Pay in India for a while now. In 2017, the company had discussions with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI a special division of India’s central bank) about bringing Apple Pay to the country. However, those talks fell through due to disagreements about fees and other conditions. Now, Apple is restarting talks with the NPCI about launching Apple Pay in India.

Apple CEO Tim Cook met with bankers in India recently to discuss plans for a localized version of Apple Pay that would be compatible with UPI, a popular payments system in India. UPI is governed by NPCI. Apple Pay would allow iPhone users in India to scan QR codes and make UPI payments directly, without needing a separate payment app. This would be a convenient way for Apple users to make payments in India.

However, Apple’s job will not be easy. Mobile payment methods are currently dominated by other players such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. Yet, as of 2023, it is estimated that about 10-12 million people in the country use iPhones. These individuals would likely choose to use Apple’s own system if given the option. So, the company is already competition-ready, even though nothing has been finalized yet. Still, only time will tell whether Apple Pay will be successful in India.

Last month Apple opened the doors to its two offline stores in India’s Mumbai and Delhi. The Cupertino-based tech giant has three contract manufacturers in India namely Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. Now according to a research firm TrendForce, Tata Group is set to become Apple’s fourth contract manufacturer following its acquisition of Taiwanese firm Wistron factory in South India. 

Tata Group to manufacture iPhone 15 and 15 Plus

Apple currently has three contract manufacturers in India namely Foxconn, Pegatron, and Luxshare. Foxconn is one of the company’s oldest contract manufacturers. Taiwanese firm Wistron was set to wind down its India operations once Tata Group takes over its manufacturing plant in Karnataka. Now, the Indian conglomerate has reportedly acquired Wistron’s production line in the country. This marks Wistron’s exit from iPhone assembly business in India. 

As per the report, Tata Group has received orders for the next-generation iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models that are set to debut later this year. This indicates that India will become the first wave of shipments for the new iPhone series. The research firm states that the Indian conglomerate will get a small chunk of iPhone 15 and 15 Plus production. It will only assemble 5 percent of both models. Foxconn and Luxshare will assemble 70 and 25 percent of the regular variant respectively. Luxshare and Pegatron are said to get  60 and 35 percent of assembly orders of the Plus variant respectively. 

As for the iPhone 15 Pro models, Foxconn will get 70 percent of assembly orders of the Pro and Pro Max. Pegatron will get the rest of the 30 percent share of the former whereas the latter will be taken up by Luxshare. 

Trendforce says that as per Apple’s patterns, new suppliers receive smaller orders for the lower-end models. This could be a pilot move and if everything goes well, Tata Group could get a higher percentage of manufacturing iPhone units next year. 

India is the second-largest smartphone market. Apple has been locally producing iPhones in the country since 2017 and is also ramping up its manufacturing efforts. The company has also been witnessing growth in India. The Cupertino-based tech giant is aiming to reduce its dependency on China (due to various reasons) by shifting its production facilities to other countries.

Over the last couple of years, it has been clear that Apple is looking to diversify its production of its iPhone outside of China. India is one such nation with the 7 billion US Dollars worth of iPhones being made in the country in the last fiscal year. This meant that it has basically tripled its production in the region.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Cupertino based giant has invested its iPhone production capacity in India, with 7 percent of all iPhones being made in the region. This was possible thanks to its expansions from its major supply chain partners like Foxconn and Pegatron, as per sources close to the matter. This also marks a notable rise in iPhone production from just 1 percent back in 2021.

As of right now, the brand is looking to reduce its dependence on China for the production of a number of its products like iPhone, Macs, iPads, and more. This move to diversify its supply chain also arrives as tensions between the US and China continue to escalate. Despite this, Apple’s suppliers in China have ramped up manufacturing by expanding their production lines, as per sources close to the matter.

If this news is true, then nearly 1 out of every 10 iPhones around the globe was made in India. Furthermore, the company’s largest supplier, Foxconn, is even looking to invest another 700 million US Dollars on a plant in a southern state in the Southeast Asian country. This plant will likely be responsible for making its iPhone components or whole iPhones as well.

Apple had just recently announced that it is finally opening its first ever retail store in the Indian market. It is planning on opening two stores later this month alone, and has revealed the official launch date for these stores.

In a new teaser, the Cupertino based giant has revealed that it will open its first retail stores in India on April 18. The company is opening the Apple BKC in Mumbai on the 18th, while the Apple Saket Store will open its doors on April 20 in Delhi, the country’s capital. The iPhone maker has just revealed the barricade for its store in Saket, Delhi, which features a unique design that takes clear inspiration from local heritage architecture.

To celebrate the opening of first Apple Store in India, the company announced a special Today at Apple series called “Mumbai Rising” which will run from opening day and through the summer. During this promotional event, the brand will bring visitors, a number of local artists and other creative professionals together. These sessions will then offer them a hands on activities with Apple branded products and services to celebrate the local community and culture of Mumbai.

Similarly, the company has also announced a new wallpaper along with curated playlist son Apple Music for its upcoming Saket store. The Apple BKC at Jio World Drive Mall opens next Tuesday in Mumbai (18th April 2023, 11 am IST) while the Apple Saket Store will open at Select Citywalk in Delhi next Thursday (20th April 2023, 10 am IST).

Apple is finally planning on opening its first ever retail store in India. This arrives after numerous delays but the company’s ‘Apple BKC’ barricade has just confirmed that it will be opening its first retail store in the region at the Jio World Drive Mall in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

According to the Cupertino based giant, “Inspired by the iconic Kaali Peeli taxi art unique to Mumbai, the Apple BKC creative includes colourful interpretations of the decals combined with many Apple products and services that will be available for our customers to discover”. Furthermore, there is also a creative with a simple greetings saying “Hello Mumbai”. Based on what we know so far, the first Apple Store in the country will be situated in Jio World Drive mall and will cover a total of 22,000 square feet.

The iPhone maker had already began hiring for several positions for this retail store in India back in January 2023. Following this launch, the company is also believed to be planning on opening its second store that is between 10,000 to 12,000 square feet in New Delhi’s Select CityWalk mall. As per previous rumors, the first two Apple retail stores in the region are expected to launch sometime between April and June 2023.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Apple exported iPhones worth $1 billion in a month from India. Now CyberMedia Research has shared data on iPhone shipments clocked by Apple in the fourth quarter of 2022 i.e. the period between October to December. 

As per the report, Apple India shipped two million iPhones in Q4, 2022, a sequential increase of 18 percent. However, year-on-year shipments during the fourth quarter declined 7 percent. The iPhone 14 series was the most sold iPhone model with a huge 59 percent market share during the three months. The iPhone 13 followed behind with 32 percent sales. 

Apple also had its best year in India in 2022. It recorded an 11 percent year-on-year growth in shipments and secured its highest-ever market share of 5.5 percent. This is attributed to local manufacturing and marketing efforts like cashback and instalment plans. Apple still grew in 2022 despite declining Q4 shipments YoY and QoQ compared to 2021. 

According to experts Apple is expected to sell even more devices in 2023 compared to 2022. The higher demand for the iPhone 14 Pro models have been noted but supply chain constraints impacted Apple’s performance. However, the aggressive marketing and promotions as well as the festive season sales drove the sales of older iPhone models including the iPhone 13. 

Additionally, Apple has been aiming to make India as its manufacturing hub for iPhones. Due to geopolitical concerns between China and US as well as the COVID-19-induced supply chain disruptions, the Cupertino-based tech giant is on a path to diversify its production outside China. As per past reports, Apple is expected to manufacture 20 percent of iPhones in India in the next 2-3 years.

Apple has achieved a new record in India, something no other brand has done before. The Cupertino-based tech giant has become the first company in the country to export smartphones worth $1 billion (~Rs 8,100 crore) in a single month. As per the data from Economic Times, Apple has achieved the export milestone in December 2022. 

Apple and Samsung are major smartphone exporters from India. As per government officials, in November last year, the former had surpassed Samsung to become the number one exporter in the country. The Cupertino-based tech giant has three contract manufacturers in India namely Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. The former two are located in Tamil Nadu whereas the latter is based in Karnataka. The company has been locally manufacturing the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus in the country. As per officials, some small manufacturers also export iPhones out of India. 

Apple has been participating in the Indian government’s product-linked incentive (PLI) scheme since it was launched in April 2020. All three manufacturers are required to submit data on production, exports, investments, and jobs to the government as part of their participation in the PLI scheme. Apart from Apple’s export numbers, the data also revealed that December was a record month for the mobile phone industry with over Rs 10,000 crore in exports. Officials added that this would have been higher if Samsung’s facility was operating at full capacity instead of being closed for 10-15 days for maintenance. 

The government estimates that India will export mobile phones worth around $9 billion in the fiscal year 2022 – 2023. The $1 billion exports benchmark set by iPhones in a month sets a leading example of the government’s ambitious PLI schemes.

Earlier this week, Apple launched the second-generation HomePod. The company also introduced new MacBook Pro models and a new Mac Mini. Now, the Cupertino-based tech giant has quietly hiked the prices of the existing HomePod Mini and the 24-inch iMac in global markets including India. The revised prices are reflected on Apple’s official website, however, they are retailing at old prices on the brand’s authorised resellers and online platforms in the country. 

The Apple HomePod Mini debuted way back in 2020 at a price tag of Rs 9,900. It has become expensive by Rs 1,000. The smart speaker now costs Rs 10,900, however, it is still up for grabs at a pre-hike price and we assume it to be for a limited period. The device is equipped with S5 and U1 chips along with four microphones. It also has a secret temperature sensor that’s been lying dormant since launch. Apple did not activate it, however, with the HomePod second generation featuring the sensor, it is expected to arrive on the affordable smart speaker as well with the upcoming HomePod 16.3 software update. The temperature sensor will let users record and monitor the room temperature as well as humidity around them.

As for the 24-inch iMac, it was launched in April 2021. It is offered in multiple storage configurations, GB / 16GB RAM options, and 8-core CPU + 7-core GPU and 8-core CPU + 8-core GPU. All configurations of the iMac have received a price hike of Rs 10,000. The base variant with 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU coupled with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage earlier costed Rs 1,19,900 and now after the price increase, it is available for Rs 1,29,900. The iMac model with 8-core CPU and GPU that started at Rs 1,39,900 now carries a price tag of Rs 1,49,900.

Apple has announced discounts on its products in partnership with HDFC Bank in India. The discounts are only valid on the Cupertino-based tech giant’s online store in the country. Apart from the flat instant bank discounts, Apple is also providing additional trade-in benefits on the purchase of the iPhone 14 series and 3 or 6 months of no-cost EMI on all devices. It’s unclear how long Apple is running the bank offer on its official website. 

The list of devices that are eligible for HDFC Bank discounts include the iPhone 14 series, iPad Air, iPad 10th generation, iPad Pro, MacBook Air M2 chip, MacBook Pro, Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8, and AirPods Pro (2nd Generation). It’s worth noting that customers need to have HDFC Bank credit cards in order to avail the discounts.

The entire iPhone 14 series comprising the regular, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max variants are eligible for a flat Rs 7,000 instant discount. Apple is also offering an additional Rs 5,000 exchange bonus when buyers trade in their old phone for the new iPhone. However, the exchange value is indicative and depends on the condition of the phone. The total discount after the bank offer and exchange bonus amounts to Rs 12,000. 

The MacBook Air with M2 chip and MacBook Pro 13, 14, and 16-inch get a flat discount of Rs 10,000. The iMac 24-inch receives Rs 5,000 instant discount. Coming to the tablets, customers purchasing the iPad Pro 12.9-inch, iPad Air, and iPad (10th gen) can avail discounts of Rs 5,000, Rs 4,000, and Rs 3,000 respectively. 

Apple Watch Ultra and Watch Series 8 are eligible for Rs 5,000 and Rs 4,000 instant discounts. Meanwhile, those interested in the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) will be eligible for Rs 2,000 in instant savings.

In recent years, Apple had started to diversify its supply chain and moved production for its products like the iPhones from China to other regions like India. Now, it appears that the company also plans to move some production of the AirPods and Beats as well to the region.

The news arrives from a Reuters report, which stated that the Cupertino based giant is preparing to make new Beats headphones in India. Furthermore, the iPhone maker is apparently also planning on moving some AirPods production to the country as well, as per sources close to the matter. Reportedly, Luxshare Precision Industry, a Chinese supplier of Apple, also has plans to begin begins production for AirPods in India.

On the other hand, Foxconn will be responsible for manufacturing Beats headphones in the region. As of right now, Luxshare is focusing on raising the production of AirPods in Vietnam, so it might be slower in moving its operations to India. The company has been planning on shifting some of its production from China already, with the latest model being the iPhone 14 series that is set to manufacture in the nation soon.

Apple has been working on reducing its dependence on China, which is its primary manufacturing hub. Since then, its focusing on regions like India, Mexico, and Vietnam, where some of its major suppliers have been setting up their operations. Production in India will also help the company avoid duties, which should lower their price tag as well.

Apple has started manufacturing iPhone 14 in India and the company has also confirmed the same. The recently unveiled latest generation flagship is the first iPhone model to be produced in the country soon after its launch. The smartphone is been made at the Foxconn plant near Chennai. 

Till now, Apple has been manufacturing four iPhone models in India through its contract partners for several years now. However, the production cycles of the phones were delayed by a quarter or two after launching. Locally producing the new iPhone 14 will save Apple import duties and taxes but the brand won’t reduce the price of the smartphone in the country as it has not happened with the older models either. Foxconn is a pioneer when it comes to manufacturing electronics globally. 

The iPhone 14 produced in India will be sold in the country and globally with a ‘Made in India’ tag. However, the device manufactured in India will take a few weeks to reach the hands of customers. 

In a statement, Apple said “We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India, the new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities.”

Previously, a report by JP Morgan stated that Apple is expected to relocate 5 percent of iPhone 14 manufacturing to India by the end of 2022 and 25 percent of production of all iPhones in the country by 2025.

Over the last couple of years, Apple has been slowly but steadily diversifying its supply chain and assembly for its products. Now, a new report has suggested that the company might soon shift a significant portion of its iPhone production to India.

The news arrives from a JP Morgan analyst, Gokul Hariharan, (Via Reuters) who stated that Taiwanese suppliers such as Foxconn and Pegatron will be central figures in the Cupertino based giant’s plans of moving its manufacturing process away from China. For those unaware, we have already covered multiple reports of Apple working on shifting away its production and assembly process for its products like iPhone, iPad, Macs, and others away from China and into new regions like Vietnam and iPhone.

As of right now, it already has begun production from these different nations, but it seems that India’s role in the manufacturing process might be expanded significantly in the next couple of years. The first iPhone was first assembled in India back in 2017, but due to the COVID-19, local lockdowns meant that the region only accounted for around 3 percent of all iPhone production. But now, it seems like this figure will be bumped a lot, with JP Morgan analysts claiming that soon 25 percent of all iPhones will be made in India by 2025.

This basically means that one in four iPhones will be made in India. Furthermore, the brand is also apparently planning on moving about 5 percent of iPhone 14 production to India by the end of this year. On the other hand, China is expected to lose around 25 percent of total production of all Apple products, including Macs, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods as well.

The Apple iPhone 14 series is finally going on sale in India today (16th September 2022). Alongside the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the company has also began the open sale for the Watch Series 8 and the new Watch SE as well.

For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant had announced its new smartwatch along with its latest iPhone models. As of right now, the new iPhone 14 lineup will be available for purchase starting from 5:30 pm IST through Apple India Online Store, Flipkart, and other official authorized retailers as well. All of the new products from the brand were announced earlier this month during its Far Out event and now are finally available for purchase.

Starting with the 2022 iPhones, the iPhone 14 has been launched in India in three variants, namely 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The base model starts from 79,990 INR, while the 256GB and 512GB configurations cost 89,900 INR and 109,900 INR respectively. There are also special launch offers available with HDFC Bank Card holders being offered a 5,000 INR cashback. The company is also offering no cost EMI and exchange offers as well. The new iPhone 14 arrives in all new colors, including Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Red.

Moving forward, the iPhone 14 Pro starts from 1,29,900 INR for the base 128GB model. On the other hand, its 256GB costs 1,39,900 INR while its 512GB version has a price tag of 159,900 INR. Notably, its top end 1TB storage option will set you back a whopping 179,900 INR. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts from 139,900 INR for its 128GB variant, while its 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB options cost 149,900 INR, 169,900, and 189,900 INR respectively.

The iPhone 14 Pro series models have been launched in multiple color options, including Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple. Similar to the base variant, the customers that have an HDFC Bank card can claim up to 4,000 INR cashback on the purchase of either the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max. Unlike the base iPhone 14, which features the same design and chipset as the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 Pro models have the new A16 Bionic chip and a 48 megapixel triple camera setup on the back. It also features a new pill shaped punch hole on the front that enables the new Dynamic Island feature.

Talking about the Apple Watches now, the Watch Series 8 has been released in 4 different options, namely 41mm GPS only, 41mm GPS and Cellular enabled version, 45mm GPS only, and 45mm GPS and Cellular enabled model. Notably, both Cellular models are also offered in two variants, which is the Aluminum or Stainless Steel. The Watch Series 8 starts from 45,900 INR and arrives in Gold Graphite, Silver, Midnight, Starlight, and Red color options. HDFC is again offering 3,000 INR cashback on purchasing the Series 8 for its cardholders.

Lastly, the second generation Watch SE has also been launched in India and it is also offered in two sizes (40mm and 44mm) along with a GPS only and Cellular enabled models. It is available in multiple colors as well, including midnight, starlight, and silver options. HDFC bank card holders can get a cashback of up to 2,000 INR.

In the latest development, Bloomberg reports that Apple could manufacture the upcoming iPhone 14 series in India much sooner this year. According to the people familiar with the matter, the Cupertino-based tech giant will ramp up the production of the iPhone 14 models with Foxconn at its assembly plant near Chennai. However, the company’s manufacturing partner will not be able to start immediate production in the country along with China as it would lead to supply-chain challenges. Thus, the iPhone 14 manufacturing will begin in India two months after the initial production starts in China and is released. This also means that the first batch of iPhone 14 Made in India will likely be ready around the end of October or early November. The company could reportedly aim for the Diwali festival starting October 24th. 

Bloomberg reports that Apple wants to diversify its production from China due to successive lockdown in the country and problems with the US government. Apple and Foxconn are also working on cutting down the manufacturing lead times from nine to six months. 

Apple started producing its iPhones in India in 2017. However, the production cycle of the phones were delayed by a quarter or two after launching. The iPhone 14 could mark the first time the latest flagship could be manufactured sooner in the country.

The launch of the Apple iPhone 14 is just around the corner. But prior to any official announcement, an analyst has revealed that the company will start production of the newest iPhone lineup for the first time ever at launch.

For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant has began production of its latest iPhones in recent years. However, the region began production of these newly launched iPhones typically around a quarter or more behind its primary production hub, which is China. But now, it appears that the brand is planning on having the Indian production to go hand in hand with the Chinese production for the first time.

The news arrives from known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claimed that Apple supplier Foxconn will start the production of the 6.1 inch iPhone 14 “simultaneously with China” in the second half of this year. He further added that India’s iPhone shipments will still have a considerable gap with China in the short term, but it is still a milestone in Apple’s efforts to diversify its supply chain outside of China.

The iPhone maker has been working on expanding its production to regions outside of China, with Vietnam and India being newer and upcoming nations. Notably, the analyst stated that another one of the reasons that Apple is moving its production away from China is due to geopolitical reasons. Additionally, it has identified the Indian market as the next key growth driver and plans to expand its production in the region.

Apple has begun the assembly of one of its latest smartphones in India. The production of the iPhone 13 has started in the Foxconn factory that is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a state in South India.

Notably, the mass production of the latest iPhones comes after the Cupertino based giant had begun trial production for the iPhone 13 back in December 2021. Back then, it was assumed that volume production for the model will start by February 2022. Although, this had been postponed till April. This is great news for Apple customers in India since local production would have the device’s cost drop by a noticeable margin.

When the brand first started making the iPhone 12 locally in India, the model saw a price slash of 14,000 INR (roughly 185 US Dollars). For those unaware, India charges tech companies custom duties for consumer electronic products that are assembled overseas and are imported. Thus, Apple products usually cost more in India when compared to other markets. So, we can also expect the iPhone 13 to see a price cut soon, once the brand begins to sell the locally assembled units in the Indian market.

The iPhone 13 joins other products from the company that is being assembled in the country. As of right now, the brand manufactures the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and now the iPhone 13 in the nation. Interestingly, this also marks a major shift in production away from China, which has typically been its primary hub for production. While Apple had recently unveiled its latest generation of MacBook Pro and AirPods, it had planned on launching the new products in India today (26th October 2021). However, it seems that the company faced certain issues that caused it to delay the arrival of the new gadgets.

The new products include the 14 inch and 16 inch versions of the 2021 MacBook Pro that feature the latest M1 Max and M1 Pro chipsets. Alongside the laptops, the Cupertino based giant had also announced its third generation of AirPods TWS earbuds earlier this month. Now, the two products were set to launch on October 26, but the company has shifted availability to a new date of October 29.

The new launch date was spotted on an updated listing on Apple’s official Indian website. Unfortunately, the iPhone maker has yet to reveal the reason for the delay, so we can assume that it was some unforeseen issue prior to the launch. On the other hand, the new MacBook Pro and AirPods 3 are still on schedule to launch on 26th October 2021 in the US market.

For those unaware, the 2021 MacBook Pro 14 inch variant starts in India for a price of 1,94,900 INR (roughly 2,600 US Dollars) while the 16 inch model costs a 2,39,900 INR (roughly 3,200 US Dollars). In comparison, the 14 inch model in the US costs just 1,999 US Dollars. Similarly, the third generation of AirPods is available in India for 18,500 INR (roughly 250 US Dollars) while its US pricing is 179 US Dollars.

The news arrives after the Cupertino based giant notified developers regarding a change in Indian’s local payments system. Now, the iPhone maker is asking developers to promote the payments being made through the Apple ID balance, with the company now offering a 20 percent bonus to Indian users that are adding funds on their IDs. This was also shared by developer Mustafa Yusuf on Twitter (Via 9To5Mac).

Furthermore, this promotional offer is valid through 31st October 2021 and will be available when adding 100 to 15,000 INR (roughly from 1 to 199 US Dollars) to the Apple ID. In other words, if a user adds 2,000 INR to their Apple ID, they can avail a bonus of 400 INR on their account. Similarly, if the funds being added amounts to 10,000 INR, then the bonus amount will include an extra 2,000 INR.

Notably, the move from the brand arrives as a new directive from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) mandates banks to require user approval through a new authentication system in order to approve recurring transactions using credit and debit cards. The smartphone maker stated that the new directive will impact apps with the auto renewable subscription payment systems, so it has asked developers to promote payments from its the company’s ID balance as it won’t be affected by the new changes from RBI.

Apple has registered strong sales in the first quarter of this year in India. The company recorded its best quarterly sales of laptops and tablets in the region, as per a new report.

According to a Canalys report (Via QuartzIndia), the Cupertino based giant saw a great sales in the first three months of this year. The report revealed that the company’s overall PC sales reached 208 million units, which is a figure nearly double that of the sale period from a year prior. Canalys added that the iPhone maker’s growth in India was “largely aided by the availability of its official online store.”

For those unaware, the company officially launched its official online store in the country in the second half of last year. This launch was labelled as apt and timely by certain experts and the brand’s CEO Tim Cook credited the online store for the company’s robust iPhone sales in India last year. Although, keep in mind that the growth recorded by various OEMs isn’t just due to a strong performance in 2021, but rather a slump that was faced back in 2020.

Despite the supply chain for various vendors being crippled in mid 2020, the overall PC sales in India, including tablets, surged by 72 percent year on year. This figure reached 4 million units between the period of January and March 2021. The market saw a growth due to the growing trend of working from home and online education becoming more common. But Apple did state that its MacBook and iPad production are currently facing delays due to the world facing a major shortage of semiconductors.

Back in December 2020, Apple supplier Wistron was placed on probation by the iPhone maker, after violence had struck its facility in India. Now, Wistron has resumed the production of iPhones in the same factory.

Last year, Wistron’s facility in India was struck by violence, with certain members of staff went on a rampage inside the site. The group destroyed factory equipments and more during the violent incident. While the supplier had initially claimed that an unrelated and unidentified outside group had been responsible for the events, local media found that many of the workers of the site were involved in the violence. These workers even claimed that Wistron had not paid them fully for four months and were even forcing extra shifts on them as well.

Since then, Apple put Wistron on probation while conducting an audit and found that the supplier had failed to implement a proper working hour management process. This led to “payment delays for some workers in October and November,” as per a MacRumors report. For those unaware, the plant was set up in the region to hire over 20,000 workers and was responsible for manufacturing the iPhone SE model.

However, its operations were put on hold by Apple until Wistron addressed the treatment of the workers. Furthermore, the new report also added that the supplier even cooperated with independent auditors along with the iPhone manufacturing team to resume production after readying the necessary systems and equipment. Notably, Apple announced last month that the workers would receive a new training program as well, to ensure they are educated over their rights and how to raise any concerns.

It had covered the story yesterday (Wednesday) that tech giant Apple was planning to start assembling the iPhone 12 series in India. The news was quite hazy at that point but confirmation has now come from Apple, saying that they have indeed started the production of the iPhone 12 in India. The inroads into the huge market provided by the Indian population of over 1 billion, marks a giant leap by the US-based company.

In a statement made public on Thursday (via), Apple said that they were proud of the decision to begin the production of the iPhone 12 in India, which will be mainly for the huge local market available for the product.

In order not to be caught in the crossfire that has now defined the simmering trade conflict between the US and China, Apple had been gradually shifting some aspects of its production from China to other countries. Even with a new administration in place in the US, tensions are still high. Vietnam and India, inside sources have revealed, are among the beneficiaries from a scaled-down production activity of Apple in China.

Taiwanese suppliers Foxconn and Wistron are the major drivers of the iPhone production project in India since 2017 when iPhone production commenced in India, with a number of plants already operational in different parts of the country.

The iPhone 12 production in India will be at Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu plant, although Foxconn has yet to provide information on the details yet, insisting that it does not make comments on client’s based services being rendered by it.

Obviously, there are plans by Apple to also assemble its tablets in India, as it continues to scale up investment in the country under a quite favorable investment and political climate. Thousands of direct and indirect jobs will be created in the process, to be mainly manned by the citizens of the country. Therefore the outlook looks good for the Indian economy and it is expected that the Indian government will continue to provide incentives for growth in the tech economy, as it pursues its policy of making India a hub for the region.

Apple is aggressively pushing to diversify its production lined for the iPhone, iPad, and others from China. The company already manufactures some iPhone models in India but there are reports that Apple is looking at moving some of its production to India.

A report by Reuters says the US company is lobbying the Indian government to reach a fair deal that could see the iPads get manufactured in India for the first time. The report indicated that the Indian government  was planning to roll out an incentive program that aimed at boosting the country’s computer export and that is something Aple is interest in. However, the Cupertino-based company is reportedly looking to negotiate a better deal.

According to Reuters, Apple is expected to dole out an initial budgetary sum of up to Rs. 70 billion ($964 million) over five years. The company is reportedly asking for that to be almost tripled to Rs. 200 billion. This is partly due to concerns that the Indian supply chain lacks the required capacityto meet up Apple’s demand.

As stated earlier, Apple already manufactures some iPhone models in India since 2018, in reaction to a government policy that imposes high tariffs on imported phones and other products. This is part of the “Make in India” initiative which is designed to grow local content. Also, Apple is increasing lookig to move its entire production out of China. A report by Asian Nikkei indicated that the US company was planning to move some iPad production to Vietnam this year. It was noted that this would be the first time such would be happening anywhere else.

Reuters quotes persons familiar with the matter to have disclosed that there is a strong possibility that iPads assembly will shift to India “as early as this year” and one of Apple’s present contractors will handle the assembly. As the moment, Apple has contractual agreements with Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron in India. We doubt if Wistron would be responsible for that considering the dust generated by its work conditions recently which necessitated an investigation by Apple.

The Indian government has just released its budget report for 2021-2022. One of the highlights of the budget presentation is the announcement of a 2.5% increase in customs duty on some mobile phone parts and power banks to stimulate local capacity and enhance value addition in the electronics segment.

From April 1, 2021, the new rule will come into force. Areas affected are parts for manufacture of specified parts of mobile phones, like Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA), Camera module and  Connectors and Inputs, parts and sub-parts for the manufacture of Lithium-ion battery and battery pack are among the parts that will now get a 2.5% customs duty. Previously, these parts were exempted from custom duty payments.

The Indian government is also increasing the import duty of Printed Circuit Board Assembly and Moulded Plastic, for the manufacture of charger or adapter by 5% from 10% to 15% and duty of Inputs and parts [apart from PCBA and moulded plastic] of the mobile charger from 0% to 2.5%. This will be applicable from tomorrow, February 2nd, 2021.

This policy is bound to lead to an increase in the prices of mobile phones, as well as a few other accessories and power banks that use imported parts, especially the Apple iPhone. 

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the country has made progress in supporting local capacity, as domestic electronic manufacturing continues to grow. He stressed that India now exports mobile phones and chargers. 

It remains to be seen, however, what the impact of this new policy will be. In the short term, the impact may be felt in the increased costs of imported phones and some other affected accessories. However, this could also help fast track the growth of local manufacturers to become global players in the coming years.

Apple said that it will be investigating its Taiwanese contractor, Wistron, after a recent violent event that took place in its facility in India. The event occurred in an iPhone manufacturing plant in the Indian city of Bengaluru.

For those unaware, Wistron is one of the primary suppliers of the Cupertino based giant. It has been making the iPhone 7 model for the Indian market alongside the second generation of the iPhone SE as well. According to a Reuters report, a group of unidentified factory workers trashed the facility on the outskirts of Bengaluru over the weekend. The violent episode arrives after the employees demanded unpaid wages and better working hours, as per a local trade union representative.
