However, the base model iPhone 14 is expected to still carry a notch style display along with the Mini variant.</span></p>

<p>The report brings good news to LG who was previously unable to secure any orders for the displays of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-13/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">iPhone 13</a> series from apple. Additionally, this move also benefits Apple as it reduced their dependency on Samsung for the display panels of their flagship smartphones.</p>
<figure id="attachment_412500" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-412500" style="width: 761px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-412500 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iPhone-13-display.png?x10805" alt="iPhone 13 display" width="761" height="512" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iPhone-13-display.png 761w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iPhone-13-display-300x202.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iPhone-13-display-696x468.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iPhone-13-display-624x420.png 624w" sizes="(max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-412500" class="wp-caption-text">iPhone 13 notch</figcaption></figure>
<p>Now, the only question that remains is how the Face-ID feature will work with the punch-hole front camera. As we know, Apple uses a multi-sensor setup to power its Face-ID unlock feature. These sensors, namely, the Flood Illuminator, the Dot projector, and the IR camera are neatly tucked away by Apple in the notch of all their devices from iPhone X onwards. With the notch gone, Apple analysts and industry insiders have speculated that the upcoming devices might use an under-display set up to house these sensors.</p>

<p>Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported (via: <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2021/10/07/iphone-14-hole-punch-design-with-notch-rumor/">MacRumors</a>) that Apple will be bringing the hole-punch design to the higher-end iPhone 14 models, similar to the one that&#8217;s now almost standard on Android devices. Following the report, leakster Jon Prosser dropped <a href="https://youtu.be/42Ot6Y0gBzs">renders</a> of what he believes the iPhone 14 would look like.</p>
<figure id="attachment_417773" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-417773" style="width: 696px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-417773" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-1024x504.jpg?x10805" alt="iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser" width="696" height="343" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-1024x504.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-300x148.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-768x378.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-324x160.jpg 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-696x343.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-1068x526.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-853x420.jpg 853w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-417773" class="wp-caption-text">Image: FRONT PAGE TECH</figcaption></figure>
<p>Further, a now-deleted post from @PandaIsBald on Weibo stated that it will be difficult for Apple to adopt the hole punch for all of the models and abandon the notch completely. Instead, the iPhone 14 will be extending the usage of the notch by yet another year, only with yet another reduction in size.</p>
<p>What remains to be seen is how Apple will be implementing Face ID if it ditches the notch considering the elaborate hardware that is required for the same to work.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-417774" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-1024x576.png?x10805" alt="iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech" width="696" height="392" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>Apple did reduce the width of the notch with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro but increased its height. This was achieved by reducing the TrueDepth camera system&#8217;s component sizes and reengineering the internals. The earpiece was also moved to the top bezel from its prior position within the notch, thus freeing up a whole lot of width.</p>
<p>Last but not the least, the said post claims that Touch ID will not be going under-display next year, meaning Face ID may continue to be the sole way to unlock iPhone 14 devices.</p>

This will finally take iPhones closer to what their peers look like, at least in terms of display design.</p>
<figure id="attachment_413976" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-413976" style="width: 967px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-413976 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/samsung-punch-hole-display.jpg?x10805" alt="samsung-punch-hole-display" width="967" height="712" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/samsung-punch-hole-display.jpg 967w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/samsung-punch-hole-display-300x221.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/samsung-punch-hole-display-768x565.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/samsung-punch-hole-display-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/samsung-punch-hole-display-696x512.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/samsung-punch-hole-display-570x420.jpg 570w" sizes="(max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-413976" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung punch-hole display</figcaption></figure>
<p>Kuo says Hardware selling points for 2022 iPhones include 1) a new <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tags/apple-iphone-se/">iPhone SE</a> with 5G support (1H22), 2) a new and more affordable 6.7″ iPhone (2H22), and 3) two new high-end models equipped with a punch-hole display (replacing the notch area design) and a 48MP wide camera</p>
<p>Apple is expected to adopt two different screen sizes for the next year&#8217;s iPhone 14 lineup, 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. If Apple decides to stick with the same nomenclature, these could come the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tags/apple-iphone-14/">iPhone 14</a> and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tags/apple-iphone-14-max/">iPhone 14 Max</a> respectively, and further the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tags/apple-iphone-14-pro/">iPhone 14 Pro</a> and<a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tags/apple-iphone-14-pro-max/"> iPhone 14 Pro Max</a>. While only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get the new hole-punch display, other models are likely to retain the notch.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-412924" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured-1024x533.jpg?x10805" alt="iphone-13-inline" width="696" height="362" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured-1024x533.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured-300x156.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured-768x400.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured-696x362.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured-1068x556.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured-807x420.jpg 807w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/iphone-13-featured.jpg 1268w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>The next best thing to note from Kuo&#8217;s claim is that the top-end non-pro model (iPhone 14 Max) could be priced under the $900 mark. The current iPhone lineup’s “Max” only includes the 6.7-inch <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tags/apple-iphone-13-pro-max/">iPhone 13 Pro Max</a>, which is priced at $1,099.</p>
<p>However, Kuo no longer believes that an under-display Touch ID could feature in the upcoming iPhones, not until the second half of 2023. This is due to &#8220;lower than expected development progress&#8221;, which leaves Apple far behind its competitors. There will be a 48MP wide camera, but the images shot with the sensor will still be 12MP in resolution.</p>
<p>Apple did not live up to the hype with this year&#8217;s <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tags/apple-iphone-13/">iPhone 13</a> lineup as literally no major revamp was anywhere to be seen, not to mention the tech giant is already lagging behind its peers in many aspects. But it looks like Apple will finally take a leap in the coming iPhone models and present something fresh to the users.</p>
