Apple surprised everyone by launching a sub $500 iPhone when the world is facing a pandemic. The newly released iPhone SE 2020 is the cheapest iPhone ever after the original from four years back in 2016. But to price the device so cheap, the Cupertino-based tech giant used the same chassis and components of iPhone 8 from 2017. A teardown video on YouTube confirms it and the person even manages to boot the new device with the motherboard of the older model.

Apple is known for many things but not for cheap affordable products. But that has begun to change with the iPad 7th generation and the aggressively priced iPhone 11 from last year. Now, the company even undercut Android OEMs by launching the $399 iPhone SE 2020 featuring its flagship A13 Bionic chipset.

The American tech company is successful in doing this because only the chip, rear camera, and battery connector are different. Whereas, the other components are identical to the ones used in the iPhone 8. The teardown video embedded above proves it by swapping the iPhone SE 2020 motherboard with the one of iPhone 8.

By doing so, the handset boots up normally and almost everything works including display, speaker, haptic engine, and front camera. Only the main back camera does not work as it could be a different module than the one used in iPhone 8, probably from iPhone XR.

That said, not every company can pull a stunt like Apple. But if they do, then it can surely help a lot of people and even the company itself during these hard times.

The Apple iPhone 8 is still a long time away from going official but the device has continued to resonate on the tech circle every now and then. The flagship will be Apple’s 10th anniversary offering and is expected to pack several innovations, both on the specs angle and on the design aspect.

Based on the rumors we get, mobile phone concept designers usually put up something which would be tailored along the line of the rumors gotten so far. In the smartphone industry, there are elements of facts in almost all rumors so it usually isn’t surprising if the concept look similar to the final design of the product. Thus, based on the rumor gotten so far about the iPhone 8, BGR joint designer Alhasan Husni has designed a concept of the iPhone 8 which could help us understand better the features the Apple flagship is expected to come with.

From the picture, the design is consistent with Apple’s design language except that this one features a curved display which is actually likely to be a 3D curved glass on top of the flat LCD display. The design conceptualizes the entire screen display the iPhone 8 is said to come with, devoid of a physical home button. The controls are entirely onscreen, well, except for the volume and power buttons.

News emanating from Taiwan, Foxconn’s base, indicate that the iPhone 8 may finally be called iPhone Edition and the changes in the design might not be too much as speculated. The device may also likely be launched later than September as it may not enter production until September. September or not, it is still a long way away so we’ll just chill.

While the list of features Apple is rumored to be adding on the iPhone 8 keeps growing, there is another list of features that would likely be missing on the next generation Apple smartphone whenever it debuts later this year. The latest rumor has it that the iPhone 8 would not feature a home button up front.

KGI Security analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, released a research report which contained details of plans by Apple to remove the physical home button on the iPhone 8. The analyst further hinted that there would be a thumb-print sensor embedded in the screen instead.

Before this recent disclosure, it had earlier been rumored that the next gen iPhone would come with a bezel-less, edge-to-edge screen design which would make the presence of a physical home button impossible. This has been known before now but the analyst went further to give details of how the new home button will look like.

Also, recall that Apple shifted to an underglass touch ID on the iPhone 7 but according to Kuo, Apple’s current “under glass” capacitive fingerprint recognition tech won’t cut it if the phone has the full-screen, button-free design. Instead, the ID reader will need to shift to an “under panel” setup, which would require optical ID tech. In this case, the optical sensors will need to be compatible with flexible OLED panels.

In addition, there might also be facial tracking sensor to verify users’ faces as a way of identification. This rumored feature is said to likely replace the fingerprint ID  technology that was supposed to sit on the home button. But the analyst did not leave out the possibility that both technologies could be used on the device.

Whatever it is going to be, the iPhone 8 is still a long way from going official, so we’ll definitely get more details on this.

Apple will ditch the traditional CNC machining process for a more refined stainless steel forging process for its next generation iPhone 8 flagship that would be launched later this year. There have been rumors that the iPhone 8 will not come with an all-metal unibody like its predecessors but would adopt an all-glass body just like Samsung’s latest flagships. That doesn’t remove the fact that the frame would be made of metal, but the type of metal wasn’t revealed.

Now, latest rumors are saying that the Apple flagship will have as its frame, a stainless steel body. The rumor is said to have emanated from “sources within the upstream supply chain. If it turns out to be true, it will mark a big departure from what we have become accustomed to on successive Apple iPhones. This isn’t the first Apple iPhone to use a Stainless steel body, though, as the iPhone 4 used stainless steel on its chassis. The stainless steel chassis is said to be supplied by Foxconn and Jabil, two companies who did supply the one used by the iPhone 4.

The new stainless steel material doesn’t only bring in a new t0 the iPhone 8 design, it will somehow lower the cost of production as  it is said to be 30%-50% cheaper than the aluminum unibody- CNC machining process. Whether this reduction in production cost will lead to reduction in the iPhone 8’s price is unknown. It may not affect the price anyway, because the iPhone 8 is rumored to have a curved AMOLED display on one of its models which is way more expensive than LCDs.

Yet again, rumor about Apple‘s next generation iPhone 8 is hitting us despite the fact that the device isn’t expected until late next year. Even though we cannot verify the authenticity of the leaks and rumors we have heard so far, we can’t deny the possibility of some of them being true.

A Weibo user has revealed that Apple will release a total of three iPhones next year and they go by the model numbers D20, D21, and D22. Recall that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus adopted the model numbers D10 and D20 respectively. It is likely that the D20 and D21 are the two upgrades of the iPhone 7 which are said to go by the names, iPhone 7S and 7S Plus.

The main highlight is said to be the D22 which is the iPhone 8 and the device is tipped as going by the code-name Ferrari. The device is rumored to feature a new design as well as a curved AMOLED display with a large screen ratio but retaining the same 5.2-inch size.

Internals

In addition, the source also hints that the iPhone 8 motherboard will be divided into the main board, the middle with a soft cable to connect the AP and AF part will have an independent design similar to that of the iPad. Apple is adopting this two-tier motherboard design in order to save space as it will be thinner than the original deign. This pattern also reduce s the difficulty to maintain. The CPU location is also moved to the hard disk opposite. Further, due to the new motherboard deign, the SIM card location is also changed in order to save space.

The rumors surrounding Apple‘s 2017 flagship, the iPhone 8 continues to grow wider by the day. Just recently, we got wind that the iPhone 8 will use OLED panels from Samsung, a new red color variant in the mix and that there is likely a China-exclusive version that has dual SIM support. The latest rumor about the Apple iPhone 8 emanating from Korea suggests that the next gen Apple flagship may likely use curved displays on all models.

According to The Korea Herald,  Apple’s orders fro OLED panels from Samsung have been exclusively for plastic units and not glass units. What this means, according to the source of the information, is that phone manufacturers use glass for flat panels, while plastic allows for curved screens just as found on the Galaxy S7 Edge.

In adddition, the source also hinted that other iPhone models billed for release next year will use flat LCD panels from LG Display and JDI. This re-echoes earlier rumors that only the iPhone 8 would use OLED display while others expected to be launched next year would use LCD displays. The report went further to reveal that Samsung’s Curved OLED capacity is estimated between 70 to 100 million units in total annually and this figure is less than Apple’s iPhone sales annually, thus lending credence to talks of OLEDs for just one model.

Earlier reports had hinted of Apple working on three iPhone models for next year namely the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, each having a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch LCD display respectively. Then, there are rumors of a curved OLED premium model measuring 5.2 inches which is the iPhone 8. There  are also talks of the likelihood of edge-to-edge displays being featured on some models which would in turn prompt the inclusion of components like Touch ID sensor.

A tech analyst with KGI Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo has hinted that the upcoming Apple 2017 iPhone 8 flagship will likely feature dual cameras which on their own would have dual optical image stabilization(OIS).

Dual cameras are not customary to Apple device, found only on the iPhone 7 Plus and not on the iPhone 7. But the well-known analyst posits that Apple will re-engineer the 2017 flagship’s lenses to support optical image stabilization and auto focus as well.This he said will be to enhance the phone’s selling point because of the improvement it will bring to the photo quality and optical zoom range.

The iPhone 8 is rumored as having a version with 5.1- 5.2 inches OLED display in addition to the traditional 5.5-inch LCD display sporting one. Mr Kuo hinted that both versions will this time around feature dual cameras with dual IOS. However, there is also a 4.7-inch model which the analyst says will retain a single-lens camera but will also have optical image stabilization feature. The 6P and telephoto lens on all three new models are expected to be supplied by longstanding Apple supplier Largan Precision, according to the analyst.

The recent filing as unearthed by investment firm JP Morgan shows that Apple had placed a purchase order for OLEDs with more than a year duration for the first time valued at a staggering $4 billion. According to JP Morgan, the order coincides with an “off-balance sheet obligation” for the same amount from the third quarter, which it believed to be a long-term OLED obligation to Samsung for the future iPhone.

It is widely rumored that Apple’s next iPhone 8 billed for next Fall could use OLED displays on one of its versions. According to the reviewer, Apple is very much likely to continue manufacturing iPhiones without the 3.5mm headphone jacks. The writer also disclosed in the article that next year’s iPhones will have a full-screen face with the virtual button built directly into the display. The source of this information was from two insiders at Apple, who don’t to be quoted because the information about the product are supposed to still be private.

Even before the release of the iPhone 7, rumors about the iPhone 8 having an edge-to-edge display had been in the open but coming from inside sources, this may likely be a confirmation that the iPhone 8 might take a leap from its predecessors in design and features. The iPhone 8 is also earlier rumored to see a transition by Apple from LCD to  OLED displays said to be supplied by Samsung. The front camera and fingerprint sensor / home button will be embedded on the display, and a more faster A11 chip which would bolt faster than the blazing A10 chipset is also touted.
