Apple Mac Pro Teardown Reveals a Massive Heat Sink & Non-Expandable Memory

In an exciting update for Apple enthusiasts, iFixit’s maintenance team has released a revealing teardown video of the highly anticipated 2023 Mac Pro. The teardown sheds light on the new changes made by Apple to its flagship desktop computer. While the overall aluminium chassis and internal structure remain largely unchanged, the spotlight is on the new M2 Ultra processor, which has been equipped with a huge heat sink.

According to iFixit, removing the Mac Pro’s case is a relatively simple task, but upgrading the internals proves to be more challenging. The disassembly process uncovered an interesting discovery regarding memory configuration. While the user cannot directly upgrade the memory, a replaceable memory module is discreetly tucked away, accompanied by an empty slot. Unfortunately, Apple has confirmed that the empty slot does not support user expansion, featuring memory configuration available only on the official Apple website.

Surprisingly, the teardown also reveals that Apple has repurposed the powerful cooling solution employed in the Intel-powered version for the M2 Ultra chip. This finding suggests that Apple has chosen to leverage existing cooling components, emphasizing the company’s focus on optimization and efficiency.

Perhaps the most intriguing revelation is the continued use of the same large motherboard as the previous Intel Mac Pro to power the M2 Ultra chip. iFixit’s team expresses their belief that the smaller M2 Ultra chip does not require such a substantial motherboard to function optimally. During the highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple introduced the latest iteration of its Mac Pro alongside Mac Studio, featuring the cutting-edge M2 Ultra Chip. The new Mac Pro boasts an impressive 24-core CPU, an optional 76-core GPU, and a substantial boost in memory and SSD storage capacity. Notably, users can configure the Mac Pro with an astonishing 192GB of memory, accompanied by a lightning-fast unified memory bandwidth of 800GB/s.

One of the standout features of the Mac Pro is its remarkable video processing capabilities. Apple has transitioned to the Apple Silicon chips, and almost all the devices from the company come powered by its own processors, except for the Mac Pro, which was last launched in the year 2019.

The new Apple Mac Pro is expected to go official sometime next year, and it could end up being the most powerful computer ever launched by the company so far, thanks to the new M2-series processors from the brand.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming Apple Mac Pro will come powered by the new and powerful in-house chips named M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme with 24 CPU and 48 CPU cores, respectively. It will be coupled with a 76-core GPU or 152 cores GPU, along with up to 256GB of RAM.

It is also being reported that Apple is currently testing a Mac Pro configuration that features a 24-core CPU, 76 GPU cores, and 192GB of RAM. It runs the macOS Ventura 13.3 operating system, which is set to roll out today to eligible devices.

The new Apple Mac Pro is expected to launch next year, but no timeframe is available as of now. Ahead of the Mac Pro launch, the company will be launching new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, as well as a new Mac Mini powered by the M2 chip. The reports about a new 15-inch MacBook Air have been making rounds for some time now, and the Cupertino-based giant is also expected to increase the size of the 13.3-inch MacBook Air, but it will remain under 14-inch.

If this latest report is to be believed, then Apple will be skipping the M2-powered iMac and will directly launch new iMac devices next year, which will come powered by the yet unannounced Apple Silicon’s M3 chipset.

There’s also a possibility of a larger iPad Pro making its debut in the year 2023, which will likely have a 14.1-inch display. The new HomePod is expected to come powered by the S8 processor, which also powers the new Apple Watch Series 8.

Apple tipped to launch 4nm M2 chips next year and 3nm M3 chips in 2023

Apple started transitioning from Intel chips to its own in-house Apple Silicon chips last year with the MacBook series. So far, the company has launched three chips for Mac which are based on the ARM architecture.

Now, a new report claims that the Cupertino-based technology giant is working on a successor of all the existing three chips which will be named Apple M2, M2 Pro, and the M2 Max, and has also shared some key details.

Further, citing information from the supply chain industry sources, the report adds that the company will be updating the Apple Silicon lineup every 18 months in the future.

It is claimed that Apple will be launching the first M2 processor codenamed Staten in the second half of 2022 and in the first half of 2023, there will be a new M2X processor with the codename Rhodes. There will be M2 Pro and M2 Max chips with different graphic cores.

All the chips in Apple Silicon’s M2 lineup will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) using the 4nm process. It is also speculated that the successor of the M2 series, which is likely to be the M3 lineup, will be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process.

The upcoming M2 series chips from the tech giant Apple will be used across six products from the brand. It is said that the MacBook will be equipped with an M2 processor while the MacBook Pro lineup will have M2 Pro and M2 Max options.

Similarly, the iMac will be powered by the M2 chipset while the iMac Pro will come packed with the M2 Pro and M2 Max. There will also be Mac Mini with an M2 processor and a Mac Pro equipped with the M2 Pro and M2 Max.

Apple to launch new Intel based Mac, despite its shift to custom silicon

Despite MacBooks shifting away from Intel processors in favor of its custom silicon, Apple is not entirely transitioning its Mac lineup to its self developed chipsets. It appears that the company aims on launching a new Mac PC that features Team Blue’s processor.

Mac Pro Leak

According to a MacRumors report, the Cupertino based giant has yet to release a new Intel based Mac. The new PC will be a Mac Pro, which is its top of the line and most powerful computer. In other words, the brand might still not be ready to transition its high end model Mac Pro to its custom Apple Silicon. As per the report, the iPhone maker is working on two new Mac Pro models, with one arriving with a major redesign while the second model will feature the current design but with refreshed specifications.

Notably, while Apple M1 series chips have proven capable in the MacBooks, it seems that the company is not completely confident enough to shift its desktop grade professional workstation to its custom silicon. For those unaware, Mac Pro’s are usually targeted towards professionals like animators, photographers, Hollywood insiders, and others. So, we can expect the upcoming Mac Pro to feature Intel’s Xeon series chipset that arrives with “advanced performance, security, efficiency, and built-in AI acceleration to handle IoT workloads and more powerful AI,” as claimed by Intel.

This also implies that Apple has yet to completely cut ties with Intel, despite its MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac series shifting to its custom chips. One reason for the Mac Pro lineup not being shifted to the new chips is likely due to their architecture, since the Apple Silicon is based on an entirely different architecture than the Intel processors.

Apple iMac 2021 models to reportedly come in five color options

There have been several reports about the upcoming Apple devices and people are anticipating the next-generation Mac devices as the company has started shifting away from Intel to its own ARM-based Apple Silicon.

In the latest development, a report from Jon Prosser claims that the upcoming 2021 iMac models will be offered in five color options — Silver, Space Gray, Green, Sky Blue, and Rose Gold. These are the same colors that Apple offers for the fourth-generation iPad Air.

Not just that, he has also shared a render of the new color options, showcasing how the redesigned iMac may look like from the back. It must be noted that the renders are purely speculative to showcase the color options as the new design has not yet leaked.

Jon Prosser believes that with multiple color options for the upcoming iMac, Apple is planning to capitalize on nostalgia for the original ‌iMac‌, which came in a selection of iconic colors such as Lime, Strawberry, Blueberry, Grape, and Tangerine.

The redesigned iMacs are expected to have slimmer bezels and will be powered by the latest Apple Silicon chips, possibly an upgraded M1 chipset or a completely new one. While the device should go official this year, an exact timeline for the same is not yet known.

There is also new information coming for the new Mac Pro device. Jon Prosser, describing the design of the device, says that it looks like “three to four Mac Minis stacked on top of each other.” He has also provided a render of the new look.

The device is expected to come with a compute unit at the bottom and a big heat sink on the top. It was initially expected to launch by the end of 2022 but could get launched soon, probably later this year.

It is also said that the 24-inch iMac will be made official by the Cupertino-based giant by the end of this year or in Q1 2021. There are also reports claiming that there could be a smaller Mac Pro which could look similar to the current model but come with half its size.

The newly launched M1-powered Mac devices are now available for order and will start shipping from 17th November. As for the pricing, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro starts at $999 and $1,299 respectively while the Mac Mini received a price cut and now it starts at $699 for the base model.

Apple announced its latest Mac Pro at the WWDC annual conference back in June 2019. The PC is finally available in India, starting at a whopping Rs. 4,99,900 (~$6,965). The latest Mac Pro replaces the previous model that Apple launched almost seven years back. The upgraded PC is all aluminum and sports a tower design with a handle on top for greater portability. The internal components are accessible from all four sides by removing the side panels using a knob. Apple is offering a number of customization options, including multi-core processors ranging from 8-cores to 28-cores. It also features an upgraded heat sink for better heat dissipation, and in turn, higher performance.

Apple Mac Pro specifications and features

Starting with the processor, the Apple Mac Pro uses an Intel Xeon W chipset starting from 8-cores to 28-cores depending on usage. Memory configuration starts from 32GB all the way up to 1.5TB. While the 8-core processor supports up to 2666MHz memory sticks, the 12 to 28-core processors support up to 2933MHz. Users can configure up to two MPX module using four GPUs. You can choose between an AMD Radeon Pro 580X, the AMD Radeon Pro W5700X, the AMD Radeon Pro Vega II, and the AMD Radeon Pro Vega Duo. The PC draws power from a 1.4Kw unit.

The Apple Mac Pro has eight expandable PCI Express slots, which can be configured in a number of ways. Users can opt for two MPX modules or four PCI Express slots, three full-length PCI Express Gen 3 slots, or one half-length X4 PCI Express Gen 3 slot with an Apple I/O Card. In terms of storage, Apple is offering options ranging between 256GB and 8TB of SSD storage with a sequential read and write speed of 3.4 Gbps.
