Apple has apparently stopped making its M2 chips that power its current generation of PC lineup. The reason for halting production for these chips was supposedly due to the decline in sales of its Macs.

According to a new report, the Cupertino based giant is scaling back production of its custom M2 chipsets while also stopping their production entirely for two whole months. The move is being made due to the low demand for Mac models. As of right now, the iPhone maker has yet to officially confirm that it is pausing chip production, although reports have claimed that this has already taken place during the months of January and February.

Apple is believed to have restarted the production of the M2 in March, albeit at half the original capacity than last year. As per reports from the company’s supply chain, the company’s third party suppliers have been impacted by this move. Apple and its primary chip supplier TSMC haven’t responded to these rumors. Although, the Elec managed to track down other suppliers that were able to provide the details regarding the halted production.

During the first quarter earnings report, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the year on year decline in Q1 was within expectation due to the various limitations in the market. He added that “We also faced a challenging macroeconomic environment and foreign exchange headwinds. We remain confident in and focused on the long term opportunity for Mac.”

The company is expected to launch a few more devices later this year.

Now, Mark Gurman has revealed in Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter that Apple has already started working on the next-generation M3 chip.

Along with the release timeline for the Apple Silicon M3 processor, he has also said that the new chip will power four Mac devices next year — 13-inch MacBook Air (J513), a 15-inch MacBook Air (J515), and a new iMac (J433). There’s also a 12-inch MacBook but the device is still in early development and not much is known about it.

Before launching the M3 chipset next year, Apple is expected to launch a few more M2-series chips this year, which could include M2 Pro, M2 Max, M2 Ultra, and M2 Extreme.

The company is expected to launch its first AR/MR headset powered by the Apple M2 processor, along with new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. After that, the company could announce a redesigned Mac Pro powered by the M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme chips.

Currently, there’s no information available about the new Apple Silicon M3 processor but it is likely to be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The M1 and M2 chips are made using a 5nm process but if the M3 chip is manufactured using the 3nm process, then it could offer significant performance and efficiency boost.

The company has already launched a few hardware products this year, including the all-new Mac Studio and Studio Display. Now, if the reports are to be believed, then the Cupertino-based tech giant is gearing up to launch a few more products at WWDC.

This is in line with his previous reports where he indicated a new product launch sometime in summer this year.

One of the Mac devices launching during WWDC is expected to be the much-talked-about Apple MacBook Air which will come with an updated design and powerful specifications. It is likely to be powered by the new M2 processor as the company has confirmed during the M1 Ultra launch that the M1 family is now complete.

The other device that the company is planning to introduce in June this year could be a redesigned iMac. The 27-inch iMac is expected to come with a design similar to the M1-powered 24-inch iMac, with white bezels and multiple color options to choose from.

Apart from these two products, the company is also expected to launch some more products towards the end of the year, including the new Mac Mini and a new MacBook Pro that will replace the current 13-inch MacBook Pro.

At the event, the company is expected to launch a new iPhone SE and iPad Air.

Now, a new report has surfaced online which reveals other products that the Cupertino-based giant has up its sleeves to be launched at the upcoming event.

In the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said that a new Mac Mini could be launched during Tuesday’s launch event. It also adds that the Cupertino-based giant could also preview a new external monitor.

The report adds that Apple completed development on the next-generation external display “months ago” and had planned to launch it shortly after it debuted the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

For those who are unaware, the technology giant has been working on two external displays, with one of them being a direct successor to the high-end Pro Display XDR and another being a more affordable consumer-level display.

Based on the information available for so, it appears that we will get to see the next-generation iPhone SE and iPad Air with 5G connectivity support at the upcoming launch event, along with a new monitor from the brand, as well as new Mac models powered by the M2 chipset.

A couple of days ago, it was reported that Apple is working on a new Studio Display with 7K screen resolution and A13 Bionic chipset. However, the launch of this high-end product is expected to take place in 2023.

Currently there’s not much known about the M2 chipset and nothing has been revealed by Apple but the report indicates that the M2 will be slightly faster than the M2 chipset and will have the same eight-core architecture but the graphics cores may get increased from seven or either to nine or 10.

It is also said that the Cupertino-based tech giant may launch the Pro and Max version of the M2 chip next year, similar to what the company did with the M1 chipset. Also, it is also expected to launch the M3 chip next year.

Apple is moving away from Intel-powered Mac devices to its own Apple Silicon and to complete the process, the company is expected to launch a new 27-inch iMac Pro which will be powered by the M1 Pro or M1 Max processor. There are also reports about the M1-powered Mac Mini to get a Pro model powered by M1 Pro or M1 Max, in addition to a new model powered by the M2 chipset.

According to a 9To5Mac report, the latest beta version of its macOS 12 arrives with frameworks and daemons that are needed to support ultra wideband technology. Furthermore, these same tools are already in used to provide UWB support on iOS devices with the U1 chip. Talking about the technology itself, ultra wideband technology is a short range wireless communication protocol that is utilized for space awareness. Through this, multiple devices that support UWB are able to locate one another.

The Cupertino based giant first introduced this technology back in 2019 with the iPhone 11. Soon after, newly launched Apple Watch, HomePod mini, and AirTags also supported this technology. And now, Apple might be bringing this feature to its Macs as well. As of right now, the iPad still does not feature UWB technology, so Macs receiving this feature before an iPad might seem unlikely. But the framework in macOS 12.3 suggests that the brand are at least experimenting on this technology with its PC lineup.

At the moment, the company is expected to be preparing for a special event in spring. During this event, Apple is likely unveiling new products and technologies, so we might even hear more about its plans with UWB tech in this conference. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

Gurman shared this news on the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. In this, he stated that the Cupertino based giant’s goal is to have all of its products eventually support Face ID. In other words, even low end iPhone models like the iPhone SE and iPad Air that currently feature Touch ID will soon arrive with facial recognition technology in the near future. Gurman added that Touch ID is still a key factor in its low end products since it is a cheaper alternative than Face ID.

However, this might be changing in a few years. He added that “I expect all iPhones and iPads to transition to Face ID,” also stating that “Eventually, a camera embedded in the screen would help differentiate Apple’s pricier devices by eliminating the notch at the top. The facial recognition sensor gives Apple two central features: security and augmented reality.” In other words, the company might also be removing the notch on the iPhones during this shift.

The notchless iPhone could debut as early as 2023. Notably, Gurman had also previously reported that Apple’s recently launched redesigned iMacs were initially slated to feature Dace ID. But unfortunately, its implementation was delayed. Apparently, the primary reason for the delay was due to the Mac laptops screens, which are significantly thinner than the ones found in iPhones and iPads. This would make it harder for the brand to fit in key components like depth sensors for Face ID.

This is a clear indication that the iMac Pro was not able to pull the punches required of it and has not had any significant upgrades since its debut, which obviously had affected its overall performance rating.

In addition, Apple had released the iMac in August 2020, which clearly satisfied the projected audience of the iMac Pro, and comes with greater power and speed. In a report monitored on business and tech news platform Bloomberg in January 2021, Apple was said to be at an advanced stage of retooling its lineup of desktop computers which were underpinned by the iMacs. The ongoing restructuring of the lineup may have thus taken the iMac Pro as the first casualty.

The iMac Pro costs about $5,000 for the base model can still be gotten across the various sales options available for Apple users, of course only while the present stock remains. Apple did not provide information on how long it will take before the stock of iMac Pros are exhausted across all its channels.

Apple also said on Saturday that Apple users who are interested in scaling their expectations and desire expandability and greater power for their desktop computers could opt for its present flagship product in the PC segment – the Apple Mac Pro. The Mac Pro comes packed with greater functionality and power, enabling it to eclipse both the iMac Pro and iMac in performance.
