Apple is apparently working on two new iPad Pro models that will feature OLED displays. The two new variants of the iPad Pro will launch with two different sizes. So here are all the details about the upcoming tablets.

As per a new report, the Cupertino based giant is planning on launching an 11.1 inch and 13 inch OLED iPad Pro model. Furthermore, the brand will supposedly launch these two OLED iPad Pros during the first quarter of 2024. So, we still have more than a year till we see these two tablets be released in the market. The news was shared by known display analyst Ross Young. While reports for OLED iPads are not new, this is the first time we’ve heard of the 11.1 inch and 13 inch size variants for OLED iPad Pros.

Additionally, these news models will also feature smaller bezels that surround the display. In other words, the overall dimensions of the new iPad Pros will not change owing to the smaller bezels. Back in October, Apple had launched refreshed variants of the 11 inch and 12.9 inch iPad Pros thanks to the addition of the newer M2 chipset. So the next major upgrade is likely with the iPad Pros receiving OLED panels.

Although, it is unclear if the iPhone maker is planning on releasing new and smaller refreshed models next year. Young had previously claimed that Apple is also planning on releasing a 14.1 inch iPad Pro model in 2023, but has now stated that the company has dropped this plan. Apple has long been rumored to shift its iPad lineup of tablets to OLED panels. And now, a new report has revealed that the company is working on iPad Pro prototypes that feature OLED over LCD panels.

Previous reports had hinted at the Cupertino based giant sourcing OLED panels for its iPad from LG and Samsung. The orders would be placed for 11 inch and 12.9 inch iPad Pro models that were expected to launch sometime in 2024. According to an ETNews report, the iPhone maker plans on producing final builds of iPad Pro prototypes with OLED panels sourced from “major domestic display partners.” In other word, the suppliers are likely to be LG and Samsung, since they are both South Korea based brands.

Furthermore, the report added that the use of OLED panels for iPad is expected to have Samsung and LG make some investments in new small and medium sized OLED panel production facilities. These next gen tablets are expected to offer a more lightweight design and improved picture quality. Notably, Apple will use the dry etching process on iPad production for the first time thanks to the use of OLED panels.

To put things simply, this technology is basically used to remove unwanted parts from a device using chemical technology. So when used on the display, it makes the panel thinner and lighter. The company hasn’t used this process in recent iPhones as they feature OLED panels, which are lighting and thinner than LCD panels. Additionally, the use of this technology also adds to the price of production, which in turn raises price tag of the product.

A new report has revealed some interesting information about next year’s Apple iPad lineup. Apparently, these iPads will feature OLED display panels that will be supplied by known display maker LG Display.

According to an ETNews report, the South Korean supplier will be the one to supply the Cupertino based giant with OLED panels for its iPad. The report added that LG is preparing to begin producing these OLED displays by expanding its plant in Paju, South Korea. The increase in production capacity will be for mid to small sized OLED displays that will be for the next generation of iPhone and iPad models.

Notably, the report states (Via MacRumors) that the introduction of OLED panels is quite an opportunity for LG Display due to its aspect ratio and size of the device’s display. As of right now, rival suppliers of the brand are currently not able to adapt to these sizes as easily. On the other hand, another report has suggested that BOE is also set to be one of the suppliers of OLED panels for upcoming iPad models as well.

So, an iPad with OLED display is expected to arrive for the first time next year as LG is set to start mass production of these panels at its Paju production site. Yesterday we reported that future iPads might sport up to 15-inch OLED displays. However, new reports have surfaced stating that it might not be possible till 2024.

According to a report by TheElec (via 9TO5Mac), Apple has abandoned plans for an Oled iPad this year. Sources have stated that the reason behind this decision was Samsung’s inability to provide the OLED displays according to Apple‘s quality requirements at a workable price.

The Cupertino-based giant wants the OLED panels to have two stack tandem structures, with two emission layers, instead of the conventional single-stack structure. These panels are brighter than the traditional OLED panels and are much more complex and costly to manufacture.

The report has stated that this requirement has made the project financially unviable for Samsung at Apple’s price. However, a next-generation manufacturing process would solve the problem by reducing the cost of production. But this would require a significant investment from Samsung to buy new equipment and make adjustments to their facilities.

The new equipment will likely be delivered in 2023, making the customers wait till 2024 for an iPad with the two-stack tandem structure OLED panels. The two tech giants are still discussing the matter. Sources suggest that if Samsung can secure a large enough order from Apple this time around, they can finalize the spending plan for this project and start ordering needed equipment during the third quarter of 2022.
