Barclays Plc analysts have downgraded Apple Inc., sending shockwaves through the tech giant’s stock, which experienced its most substantial one-day percentage drop since September, falling by 3.6% on Tuesday. The downgrade was prompted by Barclays’ expectations of soft demand for Apple’s latest iPhone models, particularly the lackluster performance of the iPhone 15 and concerns regarding the upcoming iPhone 16.

The market cap impact was palpable, with Apple shedding over $107 billion in market value as its shares reached a seven-week low, trading at $187.24, down 2.75% from the opening price of $187.15. The total market cap now stands at $2.91 trillion. This decline is estimated to erase approximately $90 billion from Apple’s market cap, highlighting the profound implications of Barclays’ downgrade.

Barclays analysts, led by Tim Long, downgraded Apple to “underweight” and reduced the price target to $160, emphasizing concerns about a potential reversion after a year with missed quarters and the stock’s significant outperformance. Long expressed skepticism about the iPhone’s future, citing a lack of compelling features or upgrades for the upcoming iPhone 16.

The challenges for Apple extend beyond the downgrade, with doubts emerging about its ability to sustain gains amidst increased competition, particularly from Huawei Technologies Co., and a Chinese government crackdown on foreign-made devices. Apple’s services business, which constitutes nearly a quarter of its total revenue, is also under scrutiny, with Barclays warning of potential risks.

In a surprising turn of events, Apple Inc. found itself facing a 3% dip in its shares during after-hours trading as the tech giant’s sales forecast for the holiday quarter failed to meet Wall Street expectations. The disappointing forecast was attributed to weak demand for iPads and wearables, prompting concerns about the company’s overall market position. 

CEO Tim Cook, however, attempted to allay fears, emphasizing the success of the new iPhone 15 models in China, where the company faced tough competition from local players like Huawei. Amidst these challenges, Apple reported a 2.5% decline in revenue from China in the fiscal fourth quarter, which transformed into growth after accounting for foreign exchange rates. 

Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri’s announcement that sales for the current quarter would resemble the previous year’s figures fell short of Wall Street’s optimistic projection of a 4.97% rise to $122.98 billion.

Despite the hurdles, Apple managed to beat Wall Street expectations in the fiscal fourth quarter, buoyed by increased iPhone sales and a $1 billion boost in services revenue. Sales figures totaled approximately $89.50 billion, slightly surpassing the estimated $89.28 billion. However, supply constraints for the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models proved to be a challenge for the company.

In China, sales dipped from $15.47 billion to $15.08 billion compared to the previous year’s fourth quarter. Still, Cook highlighted positive trends, stating that mainland China set a quarterly record for iPhone sales, with four out of the top five best-selling smartphones in urban China being Apple devices.

Analysts from Rosenblatt Securities and DA Davidson compared Apple’s situation to a “massive battleship,” symbolizing the slow progress and challenges faced by the company. These challenges were further compounded by the upcoming launch of Apple’s new product, Vision Pro, which is anticipated to have a sluggish start.

Despite these setbacks, Apple remains optimistic, predicting year-over-year growth in iPhone sales for the December quarter. The company continues to navigate declining revenues, striving to reinvent its product line for future growth. 

Apple’s resilience is underscored by its substantial market capitalization, standing at $2.74 trillion, and its relatively high Price-to-Earnings Ratio of 28.97, indicating investors’ confidence in the company’s potential. Moreover, Apple’s management has displayed faith by aggressively repurchasing shares and maintaining dividend payments for 12 consecutive years, highlighting its financial stability and efficiency in generating earnings from its assets during challenging economic times.

Amid of poor sales forecast for iPhones, many suppliers or components makers like Qovro, Lumentum have cut their revenue forecasts. It led to some inadvertent speculation of Apple cooling down the manufacturing of the iPhones. Well, the speculation has led to damage of $107 billion loss in Apple’s market value. Though, the things have rebounded, but initially, it made Apple stocks tumble to six month’s sharpest fall.

The shares went down by 2.5 per cent in the noon at New York stock exchange. The continuous slump for 4 days gets into the 5th consecutive day which led to the sharpest fall within the last six months. Apple’s stocks fell by 11 per cent and it has led to a loss of $107 billion market value. This year, the Cupertino giant has registered only 11% growth rather than the 40% in the last year.

Both decline in sales and supplier’s forecasts has led to such a situation for Apple on the stock market. Now, things have rebounded after analysts suggest to “buy the dip”.Although the increase was not as significant as it plunged, but still it has recovered a bit.

The latest developments have also led rating agency, Guggenheim to downgrade Apple’s rating to the equivalent of hold. They also added that the high selling iPhones are “no longer enough” to engine its growth.

On the other hand, Huberty is saying that supplier warnings shouldn’t have hurt Apple as much. Huberty added that”Weaker supplier guidance reflect Apple’s already more cautious Nov. 1 guidance and, importantly, doesn’t impact our service growth forecast, which is tied to the installed base rather than new shipments,” Huberty wrote in a note to clients. “We’re buyers on unit-driven pullback given services and share repurchases drive future earnings.”

Huberty advises “a look back at the past seven negative revision at iPhone suppliers suggests these data points don’t predict future share price performance, particularly beyond a one-month period.”

Currently, Apple is looking to increase the services like in the App Store with a different offering. They are also meddling ways to make Apple Care and iCloud more feature enriched for better sale margins.
