Synchron has developed a non-invasive brain-computer interface to control devices like Apple Vision Pro, and it has been running successfully for a year without causing serious adverse effects to patients.

Physically challenged people can now operate device like the Apple Vision Pro

For those unfamiliar, a brain-computer interface (BCI) is a device that allows a person to control an external device using their brain signals. It can be used to help people with disabilities, such as paralysis, and can also be used for scientific research.

Synchron’s minimally invasive brain implants, which began clinical trials in 2022, were initially designed to control iPhones and iPads, but have now evolved to control more complex devices such as the Apple Vision Pro.

According to Synchron, six patients who received brain-computer interface implants did not experience serious adverse events related to the device within the first year. In short, the implanted device did not cause any problems and performed stably in capturing brain movement intention signals.

Notably, the COMMAND study is the first FDA-approved trial of a permanently implanted brain-computer interface. Unlike other brain implants that require dangerous, invasive surgery, Synchron’s implant is placed via a minimally invasive endovascular procedure through the jugular vein.

“The results of the COMMAND study mark an important medical milestone, confirming the safety of the Stentrode BCI, with no neurological safety events reported during the 12-month study period,” said Dr. Levy, co-principal investigator of the COMMAND trial and president of UB Neurosurgery (UBNS), in the statement. “This minimally invasive approach has the potential to unlock BCI technology at scale for the millions of patients with paralysis and other mobility impairments.”

The use case

The goal of this implant is to help people who have been paralyzed by causes such as stroke and have severe brain damage to regain a degree of functional independence. The patients participating in the initial trial all reportedly had severe, chronic bilateral upper limb paralysis that was unresponsive to traditional treatments.

In summary, a brain-computer interface can interpret brain signals and translate them into actions needed to operate devices like the Apple‘s devices, allowing users to perform certain tasks even if they are physically unable to do so.

The United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) has today approved a new patent application from Apple which is related to custom hand gestures for head-mounted devices. The head-mounted devices could be both headsets like the Apple Vision Pro and smart glasses.

It should be beneficial for users physically unable to perform a pre-defined gesture

The Vision Pro detects pre-defined hand gestures performed by a user and performs a corresponding function in response. However, in some cases, a user may be physically unable to perform the pre-defined hand gesture or to perform the function with a different gesture.

According to the patent application, users can customize gestures to achieve different interactive responses in the future. The application describes that the concept aims to allow electronic devices to detect user-predefined gestures and respond to perform corresponding functions. The application includes 48 design sketches, detailing how to detect these user-preset custom gestures and assign them to tasks or functions.

The company introduced a new tool called Gesture Association Tool in the patent, which first asks the user what functions they want to create gestures for. For an available gesture that is not activated, the device will assign a name to it. You can see a demonstration of it in the image below.

The process will be performed by a device including an image sensor, one or more processors, and non-transitory memory. The image sensors will capture the hand movement and share it with the processor. Then the device will extract a first set of features from the collected data and will gesture matching criteria based on the information collected through the sensors. While the main focus is on head-mounted devices like the Vision Pro, according to the patent application, the concept could be used in many other aspects such as headphones, windows having integrated display capability, displays formed as lenses designed to be placed on a person’s eyes, and much more.

Now the news is that Meta has applied for a patent that is somewhat similar to Apple’s EyeSight feature. You can see the patent illustration below. Reportedly, Meta aims to replicate the EyeSight feature which is far from being perfect on its own.

Meta‘s patent abstract notes that it is a method for updating a subject avatar with a facial expression collected in real-time. The method includes receiving, from a sensor on the facial interface of a headset, a signal indicative of a movement in a facial muscle from a user of the headset. The process involves determining the facial expression of the user with the signal from the sensor in the facial interface of the headset, based on a machine learning algorithm trained to associate the facial expression with the movement of the facial muscle.

Then it adjusts a subject avatar for the user of the headset based on the facial expression and provides the subject avatar to an immersive reality application hosted by a remote server.

The headset will reportedly include various sensors such as ECG, EEG, and PPG sensors to assess the cardiovascular conditions of a user.

One of the limitations of VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3 or the Apple Vision Pro is that the wearer becomes disconnected (sort of) from the real world. According to Apple, they developed EyeSight to maintain the connection of the wearers with the real world.

While it’s common for companies to take inspiration from the developments and achievements of their competitors, the jaw-dropping aspect of the whole development is that it emerged only a couple of months after Zuckerburg himself claimed that its Quest headset stands tall against the Vision Pro in a variety of aspects.

Now the guest user profile can be saved for up to 30 days, which can be very useful for specific users. The Apple Vision Pro headset is set for release in eight countries after its official release four months back. The countries slated for early pre-order sales of the model are Japan, Singapore, and China where a sub-$300 Apple Vision Pro alternative has been gaining popularity. The announcement was made during the annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11, 2024. The Apple Vision Pro was officially launched four months ago and Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the availability of the model in a sprinkling of some major markets.

The Apple Vision Pro is the Cupertino-based company’s first head-mounted display device with a long-term goal of replacing the hugely successful iPhone in the future. It is described as a new augmented reality platform and a spatial computing device. It can merge digital content with the real world to create augmented reality experiences for users.

Apple Vision Pro comes with a minimum storage capacity of 256GB and up to 1TB. Optical inserts on the model are sold separately, as is the case with what is obtained in the US market. A second headset could be in the works with the availability of the Apple Vision Pro in the international market. There are rumors that the next Apple Vision headset will be released in late 2025 or early 2026. Apple Vision Pro pre-orders for Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK will open on June 28 but sales will commence on July 12.

At launch, the Apple Vision Pro retailed at $3,499 but minimal discounts have been factored in since then. The international pricing of the Apple Vision Pro significantly aligns with the US price with little variation due to currency fluctuations and location-specific tax policies.

The 256GB version of the Apple Vision Pro in China is priced at 29,999 yuan ($4,135) while the 512GB model is priced at 31,499 yuan ($4,342). The analyst believes that Apple will release a more affordable version of the headset but with lower specs as well as a new model with upgraded specs. The much-anticipated Apple Vision Pro has officially launched in the United States, garnering attention from eager users. Initial tests showcased its laminated front glass, which is essentially a plastic layer on top of the glass. While the plastic layer may protect the glass form shattering, its very susceptible to scratches.

Youtube creator Jack Nelson from JerryRigEverything shared a teardown video today, focusing on the front glass covering the camera, sensor, and display of the Vision Pro. While laminated glass typically incorporates a plastic layer to enhance impact resistance, the Vision Pro’s design leaves this layer on the outside, making it highly prone to scratches.

Tests employing Mohs hardness testing revealed that tools with a hardness level as low as 2 can leave light scratches on the Vision Pro’s front glass, with level 3 hardness tools causing deeper scratches. This contrasts sharply with most smartphone displays, which typically only show scratches at hardness levels of 6-7.

As a consequence, everyday items such as keys, coins, and even dust pose a significant risk of leaving permanent marks on the Vision Pro’s front glass. To mitigate this issue, Apple includes a special protective case and polishing cloth in the product’s packaging. However, replacement of the front glass comes at a hefty cost of US$799 (~5,700 Yuan), underscoring the severity of potential damage.

Despite this vulnerability, the outer plastic layer does offer an upside: enhanced drop resistance. Drop test conducted by AppleTrack demonstrate that the front glass of the Vision Pro can endure multiple drops before succumbing to breakage, providing reassurance to users concerned about accidental impacts.

While the Apple Vision Pro excels in one aspect, its vulnerability to scratches highlights the importance of proper handling and maintenance of the device. Apple CEO Tim Cook says this ‘special computing‘ device will soon launch in the Chinese market.

Joseph Ravichandran, a PhD student from MIT with expertise in microarchitecture security, claims to have identified a critical kernel vulnerability in the device’s operating system, visionOS. This vulnerability could potentially enable jailbreaking and the development of harmful software designed to exploit this new hardware.

Kernel Vulnerability Found in Apple Vision Pro

Joseph Ravichandran shared his findings on Twitter, posting a series of tweets that included photos showing the Apple Vision Pro’s reaction to a kernel exploit. After the exploit, the device goes into a “perspective mode” and instructs the user to remove the headset in preparation for a restart, which is scheduled to occur within 30 seconds.

Following this restart, Ravichandran highlighted an emergency log indicating a kernel crash. Further, he showcased a custom application named Vision Pro Crasher, featuring a skull adorned with a headset icon and a button labeled Crash My Vision Pro.

This news isn’t entirely surprising. New hardware releases often attract security researchers eager to test its defenses. Similar to attempts to jailbreak iPhones, Ravichandran’s exploit highlights potential security concerns for the Vision Pro ecosystem.

Mere two days after Apple‘s mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, hit the market, repair experts iFixit has already performed a teardown, offering a glimpse into its intricate workings.

The video reveals an array of components, including numerous cameras and sensors, cooling fans, and lens motors. And as expected, the teardown confirms earlier concerns about the difficulty of opening and repairing the headset.

Apple Vision Pro teardown shows its intricate details

The Vision Pro is unsurprisingly Apple’s most complex piece of hardware yet. iFixit says the device is so complicated that it requires more than one video to tackle it. So we can expect more teardown content for the Vision Pro in the coming days. 

Anyway, the first part of the video focused primarily on the disassembly of the headset. The most challenging part of the teardown was removing the front curved sheet of glass. It was, however, carefully removed using heat and without damaging the display. 

Beneath the glass, there were two more layers – a black layer and an unlaminated layer over the top of the exterior screen. The black layer was likely a spacer, and the unlaminated layer was a lenticular lens array. This lens array is said to create a 3D effect when you watch content in the Vision Pro. 

In the next step, we saw the removal of the display and lens assembly. This involved removing torque screws, as well as several layers of tape, screws, brackets, and cables. 

Once the display and lens assembly were removed, the iFixit team was able to see the cameras and the stepper motor that parks the lenses.

Taking apart the Apple Vision Pro certainly seems like a challenging task that demands a considerable amount of patience. Nevertheless, the iFixit team managed to successfully dismantle the Vision Pro, unveiling its internal mechanisms.

Although they refrained from giving a formal “repairability” score, the team did recognize that while repairs might pose a challenge, certain connections turned out to be surprisingly user-friendly.

Apple‘s new Vision Pro headset might be fragile-looking, but new drop tests show it’s tougher than some expected. The tests, conducted by Sam Kohl of Apple Track, reveal the headset can withstand bumps and even falls from significant heights, though with some caveats. 

You can watch the full drop test video below, but we will try to quickly summarize the results here.

Apple Vision Pro Drop Tests

So in regular usage, typical wear and tear such as accidental bumps against walls or doors caused minor scratches to the Vision Pro’s glass, but no significant damage. 

Even intentional bumps against walls didn’t shatter the glass. However, the light seal, which helps block out ambient light, popped off easily throughout the testing.

The headset also survived multiple drops onto the carpet from a low height, although the speakers did take a hit. Specifically, the right speaker stopped working after the third drop because of an internal break in the band connection. Despite this, the headset remained in good overall condition and was fully usable.

But a significant fall from 10-12 feet finally resulted in shattered front glass. Even then, the glass didn’t break into pieces, and the headset continued to function normally. 

Interestingly, the front glass can be peeled off to expose the display layer, which, although still functional, is likely very delicate and prone to damage.

All in all, the Vision Pro demonstrated better-than-expected resilience in everyday usage scenarios. The only weak point seems to be the speakers and light seal becoming loose. While this may warrant some caution, if you’re not a clumsy guy dropping off your gadget here and there, the headset should offer good durability.

Apple Vision Pro is now officially available for purchase with a collection of nearly 600 apps designed specifically for the headset. Although this number may seem substantial, it falls short compared to the extensive app stores of the iPhone and iPad. 

In an effort to support developers, Apple has introduced a “Developer Strap” for the Vision Pro, priced at $300. It essentially functions as a USB-C dongle allowing developers to make a direct connection between the headset and a Mac.

The strap is exclusively available through the Apple Developer website and is targeted at developers who can use this USB-C dongle to “accelerate the development of graphics-intensive apps and games.”

This likely means compiling and debugging apps directly on the device, bypassing the need for a wireless connection. However, Apple hasn’t confirmed if file transfer is also possible (via 9to5Mac).

While development options are available for other Apple devices like Apple TV and Watch, transferring VisionOS apps with 3D features can be cumbersome over Wi-Fi. Hence, the Developer Strap can be particularly valuable for developers working on Vision Pro projects involving these advanced features.

However, it’s important to note that Apple is strictly positioning this accessory for developers and not for consumers. Thus, it’s not available through the regular Apple Store. Instead, it can only be ordered via the Apple Developer site and currently by only US-based developer account holders.

Interestingly, the Developer Strap includes a built-in speaker, as developers need to replace the right audio strap that comes with Vision Pro. 

Separately, Apple Stores in the US are now providing 25-minute Vision Pro demos, showing the device’s capabilities, available content and apps, and more. The headset might launch in additional countries later this year.

The Apple Vision Pro headset relies heavily on gestures for user interaction, facilitated by the visionOS software. CNET’s tests reveal that the headset struggles to distinguish between the wearer’s hand and the hands of others entering the interaction space. This could pose challenges, especially in scenarios where users have children or other individuals around them.

The interference from additional hands affects the seamless execution of gestures, potentially disrupting the intended experience. This will be very inconvenient in certain scenarios like accidental deletion of a file caused by a random hand movement within the range of the gesture system.

We now have more detailed information on the battery specifications for the Vision Pro headset, clearing up the initial ambiguity of the pre-order period that only provided general usage and video playback estimates.

Turns out, the battery pack included with the headset has a capacity of 3,166 mAh. While this might seem modest considering the weight (353 grams), the thing is it operates at a high voltage of 13V 6A, surpassing the typical 3.8V voltage of phone batteries. 

This higher voltage translates to an equivalent capacity of 9,440 mAh when compared to typical phone battery voltage, essentially making it comparable to a 10,000 mAh power bank (via GSMArena).

Moreover, as you might know, the Vision Pro’s battery is external and connects to the headset via a proprietary twist-to-lock connector. However, contrary to initial impressions we’ve seen so far, the connecting cable is indeed removable. 

Journalist Ray Wong made an interesting discovery – the cable can be detached from the battery pack using a SIM ejector tool. This means you can replace the cable individually without having to purchase an entirely new battery pack if it gets damaged.

Ray Wong’s findings also reveal an interesting detail. Apple is still using a Lightning port for the Vision Pro proprietary headset and battery pack connecting cable. 

It’s a larger, 12-pin version than what we are typically used to see on iPhones. But the fact that Apple has not moved away from its proprietary connector is somewhat surprising, especially considering the current pressure it’s facing from the EU.

Another thing to note is Apple Vision Pro battery is not hot-swappable. This means that disconnecting the cable while using the headset will effectively shut it down. You will need a fresh reboot when you connect a new battery pack.

In a frenzy of anticipation, Apple‘s Vision Pro has reportedly garnered substantial preorders, with an inside source estimating sales “upwards of 200,000” units. Known for accurate insights into Apple’s upcoming products, MacRumors adds credibility to this claim. This news follows Ming-Chi Kuo’s projection of 160,000 to 180,000 preorders based on his extensive study of Apple’s supply chain.

Due to the limited production, Vision Pro deliveries are being delayed until March

Despite the robust demand, Apple faces a challenge in meeting it promptly. Within an hour of preorders opening on January 19, delivery estimates were already pushed to March for certain storage tiers in specific U.S. states. As of now, March appears to be the estimate across all storage options and states, signaling a potential supply-demand mismatch.

The situation is compounded by the limited production capacity of key components. Apple sources its Vision Pro’s near-4K OLED microdisplays from Sony, a supplier capable of producing a maximum of one million units annually, as reported by The Information, The Elec, and The Financial Times. Considering each headset requires two of these microdisplays, Vision Pro production might be capped at less than half a million units for the year.

In response to this limitation, Apple is reportedly exploring alternative suppliers for OLED microdisplays for future iterations of the Vision headset, as disclosed by The Financial Times. This strategic move could enhance production capacity and potentially reduce costs. However, for the initial release of Apple Vision Pro, supply constraints are expected to persist.

The high demand and constrained supply suggest that the Vision Pro could face extended backlogs, possibly lasting for months. Apple enthusiasts eager to get their hands on the latest VR/AR technology may need to exercise patience, especially considering the challenges in securing key components.

As the February 2 launch date approaches, Vision Pro’s success in the market will likely be measured not just by its preorders but also by Apple’s ability to manage and improve its supply chain to meet sustained demand. The coming months will reveal whether Apple can overcome these challenges and deliver the Vision Pro to consumers in a timely fashion.

Zoom‘s new app is integrated with the innovative visionOS, and aims to redefine the virtual meeting experience. Among the standout features, Personas and Spatial Zoom take center stage. Personas introduce an authentic spatial representation of users during calls, allowing others to see facial and hand movements even without a dedicated camera pointed at them.

The Spatial Zoom feature empowers Apple Vision Pro users to customize their call experience by scaling it to the most suitable size. Whether enlarging the call to simulate an in-person meeting or minimizing it to fit the workspace setup, this functionality enhances the flexibility and personalization of virtual interactions.

Smita Hashim, Zoom’s Chief Product Officer, expressed the significance of this integration, stating, “The integration of Zoom on Apple Vision Pro and visionOS extends our platform promise of allowing participants the ultimate meeting experience from anywhere and delivers on our commitment of seamless collaboration and communication.”

Looking ahead, Zoom plans to introduce additional features for its Apple Vision Pro app in the spring. These include 3D object sharing, enabling users to share and experience 3D files within the headset. The integration with Zoom Team Chat and real-world pinning, allowing users to pin up to five participants anywhere in their physical space, further solidifies the app’s potential to transform and optimize professional workflows.

This announcement is noteworthy as it positions the Vision Pro as a device capable of enhancing the workday experience. With Zoom calls often considered a routine and somewhat tedious aspect of professional life, the promise of a more enjoyable, “immersive experience” could significantly impact how professionals perceive the $3,499 special computing device from Apple. The Zoom app for Apple Vision Pro is expected to be available for download from the App Store on February 2, coinciding with the headset’s official launch.
