The life-saving stories about the Apple Watch are many and quite varied. The smart wearable has etched a name for itself with its raft of features that are continually being upgraded. The Apple Watch features fall detection, ECG monitoring, heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen tracking, and more. A Reddit user, digitalmoto has reported how his Apple Watch Series 7’s heart rate monitor helped to keep him alive.

The man said that his Apple Watch picked up some highly unusual activity while he was having a nap. The smartwatch started sending up to a dozen notifications about a racing pulse, but these went unnoticed. Both the Apple Watch and the connected iPhone were set to Do Not Disturb.

However, the man suddenly woke up to see the alerts and quickly sought a medical opinion from a doctor via video call. Upon an evaluation of the readings, together with the man’s blood oxygen status gotten from the smartwatch, emergency services were called. The ensuing visit to a medical facility revealed severe internal bleeding, according to the report.

Although current smart wearables cannot directly detect internal bleeding, ancillary activities could indicate an abnormal situation. This was exemplified with the case in consideration, as a sudden rise in pulse reading triggered the notifications. The Apple Watch has lent itself as a life-saving gadget in several instances. The array of accurate and insightful sensors in an Apple Watch gives a general overview of a user’s health and fitness status.

If we are to compile a list of persons who give credit to the Apple Watch series for saving their lives at one point or the other, we’ll discover that it is a number already. The list keeps growing by the day as yet another story has emerged.

According to the story which was first reported by local news outlet WMUR, the man named William Rogers, a tech school teacher had gone ice skating on Sunday on Salmon Falls River in Somersworth. This is something he has been doing all his life but on that day, tragedy struck as the ice broke under his weight and he fell into the ice-cold river.

When he realized he was going into the river, Rogers disclosed that he scrambled around for some time in an attempt to come out of the ice but the ice kept breaking and couldn’t support his weight. At that point, all he could think of was his family getting a call about his demise.

Of course, a couple of minutes more inside the ice would have killed him. But at that point, he realized he had to stay calm and think of possible ways out of the situation. That was when it occurred to him to use his Apple Watch to call for help even as he was already struggling to breathe inside the cold water. He dialed 911 using the SOS feature on the watch.

“It worked. Saved my life, I think,” an ecstatic Rogers said. Rogers told the emergency responders that he probably had 10 minutes before he stopped responding. fortunately for him, the fire brigade arrived in five and he was pulled out of the water to safety.

Apple Watch series is presently the top-selling smartwatch around with over 100 million user base to date and the reasons for this aren’t far-fetched. The models come with several vital life-saving features such as a heart rate monitor, ECG, fall detection, and a feature that lets users dial emergency services when needed.

We have repeatedly heard stories of these features turning out to be life-savers. In January this year, the story emerged of a British cyclist who was rescued after calling for help with Apple Watch in a flooding river in the UK.

According to the report, the unknown cyclist was carried by the water current one mile downstream on the swift Wye River. He managed to grab a branch by the water and called for help using his Apple Watch.

Apple Watch was first unveiled by Tim Cook in September 2014 but it wasn’t until April 2015 before the first version of Apple’s wearable started shipping. Since the birth of the wearable, the Apple Watch has evolved tremendously with the addition of several features that have turned out to be lifesavers. The sales have also been remarkable.

According to a chart posted by Above Avalon, Apple has shipped in excess of 100 million Apple Watch devices worldwide since 2015, making it the number one best-selling piece of wearable tech on the planet. This is no mean feat considering that the watch is one of the most expensive products in its category right from when it was launched.

The data also shows that the smartwatch’s adoption level stands at only 10% of the active iPhone users. Presently, the number of iPhone users globally is around 1 billion.

The figures were propelled by the shipment for 2020 which is estimated to be 30 million units. This is shown to be higher than what the company shipped in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Also, the US market is the most dominant in terms of the adoption of the smart wearable lifestyle. The data shows that about 35% of the iPhone users pairing their iPhones with an Apple Watch.

Further, the Apple Watch ranks number four on the list of best-selling products by Apple, behind the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Estimations by analysts show that Apple Watch will likely displace the Mac from the fourth position in 2022.

Apple Watch has been credited a few times for saving the life of its users after the device reportedly detected a potentially fatal incident. The smartwatch is again in the news for helping its user detect a medical condition.

25-year-old Zachary Zies has his Apple Watch to thank for saving his life on Thanksgiving weekend. The recent Ohio State University graduate Zies is said to have been suffering from a genetic disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia. The condition attacks some vital parts of the body including the spine, the brain, and the heart. These organs are no doubt essential to the normal functioning of the body and would result in problems with walking and talking.

The Apple Watch’s heart rate monitor on his Apple Watch detected a high resting heart rate for Zies said to be in the tune of 210 beats per minute. This is super high considering that the resting heart rate for a well-trained athlete is in the region of 40 per minute.

After the smartwatch alerted him of his unusual heart rate, Zies went to his Doctor and underwent a procedure known as an arterial ablation. The procedure destroys or scars tissue that is causing faulty heart rhythms which in Zies’ case was being caused by arterial flutter.

The young man hinted that he has recovered to a large extent and attributes this to the top-selling timepiece in the world. “The Apple Watch was pretty much telling me something is up, and you need to go in and get help to see what’s actually wrong,” he said.

The Watch saved the life of a 67-year-old man in Norway last year who fainted while home alone and suffered a hard fall in his bathroom. But as he was wearing his Apple Watch Series 4, first responders were automatically alerted. They are a few more examples of this wearable saving lives, from a man in the UK by promptly detecting low heart rate to saving two stranded Kayakers at sea with the Emergency SOS feature. (via)
